My proposal to Apple to make antenna issue right

This is not a gripe post and is only a suggestion of what I think Apple could do to make this issue right. I hope this post isn't removed.
I finally bought a bumper to fix my antenna issue as Apple has instructed. I really do like the bumper. It's nice. Here is what I would do if I were Apple. Since a bumper is needed to correct the issue I would include a black bumper in the box. Only black would come with the phone. This way everyone has a way to keep the issue from happening right out of the box. If anyone wanted a different color or another black one, they would have to buy it. This way Apple can still make money from their bumpers. Throwing in the black bumper would definitely take the heat off of the issue. I think people would be more inclined to buy a different color since they aren't feeling like they have to in order to fix the issue. Another upside is that once people see how nice the included bumper is, they will most likely want to buy one if there is another color that they really like.
This sounds like a good compromise to me. It would probably be cheaper for Apple in the long run also. Better to cut into bumper profits than to spend money and resources trying to fix the current phone (if they are even considering this). They can just work to make sure this doesn't happen with the next iPhone.

I don't think this goes nearly far enough though. The bumper provided no redress as far as my situation was concerned. Instead, I was left with a phone that continued to drop calls at home where this had never happened before with any of my older handsets, despite their using the same network.
That suks, you may have a different issue then. My issue was specifically touching the black line which caused the antennas to connect. I was able to repeat the test over and over with the exact same results every time. With the bumper on, my hand is no longer making that connection. My signal no longer drops due to this specific issue.
On a positive note, I would imagine that any other issues can be fixed with software. The only hardware issue I see is the external antenna. They did say that the method for choosing a tower has been changed. This could be affecting some users in a negative way. I'm betting most other issues will be cleared up with 4.1 or 4.0.1.

  • 2007 MBP will not boot, chimes no apple logo, makes noise under right side

My laptop froze today so I restarted it and now it will not boot up. From reading, it may be the logic board or ram. Has anyone had this happen? Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

well of course I'm going to do that, but since they couldn't figure it out the first time I figured it may be helpful if I could ask here first and if somebody else has had this same problem and knows what's going on it would be easier for them to find the real problem, because I don't think the logic board is the problem, or at least it isn't the only problem.

  • Apple Deleted My Post About Antenna Issue

So Apple does not like me posting about the antenna issues in their support form. Sorry Apple you have lost me as a customer and all the business I bring to you, which is significant. Moving to Linux and Google Android.
Just so you know Apple you cannot teach arrogance, you either have it or you do not. And you my former friend have a big case of arrogance! Hope you read this.

Apple DOES read these boards, carefully as a matter of fact- contrary to some posters. I'm with you. Apple has lost me. I'm returning my phone at the end of the 30-day period hoping for a recall in the interim.

  • My take on the iPhone antenna issue

I'll start off by saying I own a 3GS, don't own a 4, have seen one a friend has and know a few friends that have them.
I've had other products (like a knife) that have an optional guard. You can leave it off and "be careful" or you can put it on and have the item be somewhat less attractive. This is my personal take on Apple's reasoning.
You definitely would not want to increase the size of the iPhone by building in a case, because a third part might make a case that, say, was also a checkbook case. So it makes sense for the iPhone to be bare bones, and you have the option of adding a case if you want one.
The mistake, as I see it, was in Apple not including a bumper with the iPhone, +and having the bumper already be on the iPhone when you took it out of the box.+
Had they done this, IMO there would have been no complaints at all.

I agree the bumpers should have been free and included.
The antenna issue though is very subjective. Steve is right. I have seen every phone i have owned drop bar level depending on how i hold it. This one is more pronounced because we can touch the antenna, usually a radio no no. The idea of the external antenna integrated with the case is quite cool. I use my iP4 in a very fringe area and haven't had it drop a call due to lost signal. In fact it is better than my 3G i replaced. It is better with the bumper. So what happened? Apple took a risk and designed something new. Then Steve hyped it up into the stratosphere. Raised expectation of perfection. It isn't perfect and all the nay sayers had something quite real to pick on. Now here we are.
This phone is an amazing device. Very fast an powerful and the camera is really good. It has a few color issues but nothing that can't be fixed in any photo editor. The result is great photos capture with a cell phone. The video is great as is the recorded sound. Quite usable.
So it has a few quirks, well worth all the positives in my opinion.

  • The ANTENNA issue

Just finished "listening" to the Steve Job presentation. The fact that only 0.55% of the people called Apple support does not really reflect the fact that the phone DOES HAVE A REAL ISSUE (quite worse than the 3GS and other phones that I see at the same time at the Iphone 4.
Many, like myself, don't bother writing or calling Apple support because we always get a "song and dance" on almost any complaint issue. Given the fact that this antenna issue is so invasive for, I would guess, 90%+ of the iphoine 4 users out there, another phone call is just another phoine call.
I would suggest that Apple DOES know (and maybe always knew) there is a real issue with the antenna. Now it's up to them to fix it and make it good for Apple supporters or many will find out that the Google Droid phones are quite good!

Thank you for your opinion. Now post it where it will do some good: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

  • Applecare states that iOS4 update will NOT fix antenna issue

    http://gizmodo.com/5580587/applecare-the-iphone-4-update-wont-solve-the-antenna- problem
I lose signal, when placing the phone in my pocket. I have a silicone case on it now. I'm waiting for my bumper, if that doesn't keep it from dropping signal while in my poocket, it's going back.

I lose signal, when placing the phone in my pocket. I have a silicone case on it
now. I'm waiting for my bumper, if that doesn't keep it from dropping signal
while in my poocket, it's going back.
I predict the bumper will have no effect on the phone in your pocket, especially since you already have a case on it. The only thing the bumper will fix is when you have the palm of your hand directly on the left side of the phone bridging the gap between the antennas. It improves things in that scenario quite effectively. Height above ground, in the clear, with no large absorbent masses in the way, makes the most improvement. If the signal is weak, the best thing you can do is get the phone higher, in the clear, and move near a window if inside. Standard cell phone protocol.
But I have to say (with all the OPs), the iPhone 4 is phenomenal in its ability to stay on the air in weak signal conditions. Vastly better than earlier models. The specific antenna issue is a bit embarrassing for Apple, but certainly not a deal killer. No phone from any manufacturer is going to perform optimally in a pocket.
I am surprised no one is complaining about how slippery the phone is. It became obvious to me, in the first few minutes of use, something had to be added to "get a grip" on the phone, or it was not going to survive long around me. It slid off everything that was not perfectly flat. My knee, my lap in the car, you name it. It is the most difficult phone to hang on to that I have ever had.
The bumper also cures that problem. Not 100% in all conditions (you still can drop it) but it improves the odds enormously. Is it also Apple's fault the phone is slippery? Of course. But the fix is the same.

  • My feedback on the antenna issue

I suggest Apple do one of these things:
    1) Sell the phones with a bumper already installed on the phone. They'll have to change the packaging for this to fit the bumper, but it will make the bumper a part of the whole phone package and design. If you remove the bumper and experience the antenna issue, Apple can then say "well then don't remove it, akin to the "it hurts when I do this" doctor analogy.
For users who've already bought the phone, either an Apple store credit equal to the price of a bumper, receive 1 free bumper by going to the Apple store or mail 1 free bumper to each person who purchased an iPhone 4.
Commercials should be changed to show the user using the bumper whenever they make calls. If using the phone on wifi without a bumper, include a disclaimer at the bottom of the ad that states that the cellular connection requires usage of a bumper.
    2) Apply a coating to the steel rim which minimizes the amount of attenuation to an amount on par with attenuation other smartphones experience when held the same way. People buying new iPhone 4s will no longer see the issue. People who've already bought an iPhone 4 can return their phone and receive a brand new phone that has the coating applied, along with assistance to copy the contents of their old phone to the new one. Old phones can then have the coating applied and sold as refurbished phones, or used for parts.
Note that none of this requires people who are happy with their phones to return them or even go pick up their bumper.
This is simply my own feedback regarding the issue of the abnormal amount of signal attenuation. If you have feedback on the issue, whether it be positive or negative, feel free to post as well, but direct the feedback at apple, not me.

  • Apple, please address this issue!!! Searching and special characters

I've found at least one other topic here regarding this issue, but Apple has yet to address it, or even confirm that it's in fact an issue.
A big portion of my library consists of international artists, many who have special/nonstandard characters in their names (e.g. "Tiësto"). In previous versions of iTunes, I could search for "Tiesto" (note the absence of the umlaut over the 'e') and all of those tracks would appear. However, after upgrading to iTunes 9, I'm forced to search for "Tiësto" in order to view those tracks.
Thinking about this issue, it would seem that this is normal behavior, as an artist named "Pàz" isn't necessarily the same as "Paz". But the reality is that NO ONE wants to take the time to search for the alt-code of a special character, and then type it in. Additionally, most people (including me) have a number of reasons for not renaming the artist to conform to standard characters.
Clearly, something has changed between iTunes 8 and 9. And it's incredibly frustrating. A big chunk of my library is virtually inaccessible to me now, unless I search for terms that don't contain special characters.
Apple, **PLEASE** address this issue. I'm not the only one with the problem and it's become a huge pain in my side to have to work around this.

I don't see how it's sloppy or why there should be any reason that it shouldn't have given you both.
Even putting aside that gracenote and others don't have consistent spelling in their databases, that when you download from the iTunes store, who knows what you're going to get, so that one's library could be all over the place and one might not even notice it, accents and other markings don't change the fact that a u is the same letter as ú.
Yes, it's pronounced different. Yes, the difference is very important. But it's the same base letter. And even if it's considered a different letter in another language, in English we have 26 letters and all the accents and tildes and umlauts don't make them a new letter, which is what we're talking about here.
It's a huge pain that looking for an album that has "Zürich" in the field and I type in "Zurich" I can't find it. I have to think about if I really do have that album, maybe I deleted it by accident, etc. And then I think to type "rich" and then it pops up.
That's way too many steps. I don't know keyboard shortcuts and I don't want to learn them. In English, it should be letters, not characters, that count.

When will Apple ever make it convenient for the customer, I just bought an iPad Air and I'm very upset that I can only use iMessage, iPads are the biggest mistake to buy if you like texting family and friends. I'll never buy another one if I can't text using SMS or MMS.  Is there any hope for a patch or new operating system to fix this issue, or an app to use with iPad Air

  • Looking for Q&A session from July 16th press conference on antenna issue.

Does anyone know where I can find the rest of video, the Q&A session, from the July 16th press conference on the iPhone 4's antenna issue? The post on apple.com cuts it off. Kind of irritating because I'm experiencing the same issue, and I'd like to see what questions were asked. All I can find are a few very small clips here and there on other websites and excerpts of the session with a lot of spin mixed in. I just want to watch it for myself. Anyone know where I can find it in its entirety?

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38263228/
In the video at the bottom, it clearly shows video from the Q&A session. So yes, the Q&A session was recorded.
So, does anyone with more accurate information know where this can be found unedited without all the spin.

  • Apple Mobile Devices & 526WLC Issues

We've recently deployed an express wireless configuration involving a 526WLC and 5 AP521s at a customer's site. The wireless system work fantastically well with one exception -- it does not play well with Apple mobile devices. This includes iPhones and iPod Touches.
What happens is when the mobile device in question attempts to connect, the connection simply fails. It will stall for a minute and error out saying it was unable to connect. I've tried several different types of security from WEP to WPA to WPA2 to no security at all! -- no avail.
The only pattern that I've seen is that older version'd devices (1st iPhones, 1st Gen iPod touches, etc) are able to connect just fine. My iPhone 3G S as well as newer iPod touches seem to fail.
Has anyone experienced a similar issue or have any insight as to what may be going on? Any help is much appreciated
    Regards,
    Thanh

The problem with iPhones/iPods is that you cannot change most wireless settings manually, in case its automatic connection mechanism fails. We solved this in the standard Apple way: make a so-called .mobileconfig file containing the correct wireless parameters, send it to the iPhone and install this file on the iPhone. Making a .mobileconfig file for the first time requires a Mac or a PC with a certain Apple utility (see somewhere on apple.com). Once you have a working .mobileconfig, you can adapt it manually (if necessary) with a text editor (because it is plain XML code) and distribute it to iPhones. Hope this helps.

  • Will Iphone 4 8gb have antenna issue sorted?

    Hi ,
I am hoping some one in this forum might get a inside information on the new Apple iphone 4 8gb which will be released on 14 oct with new ios  5  but no SIRI.
Now I had a bad experience with the Iphone 4 white which I bought in June 2011 and returned back after suffering a lot of call drop issue because of antenna on the phone.
I dont want to be in the same situation again where I buy the iphone 4 8gb and realize that the antenna issue still exists.
SO MY QUESTION TO APPLE IS:
IS THE ANTENNA GATE ISSUE SORTED OUT ON THE IPHONE 4 8GB ?
    Thank you

Yes, I am talking about the GSM model. Cause a friend of mine had bought this model iphone 8gb a year back when Iphone was launched. But it was soon stopped. So he has got the iphone 8gb model and even he had issues with the antenna on it.
Now I am just wondering if Apple has just launched the model back again without any changes to the antenna.
I want to just use the 8gb one if it doesnt have any issues, till the time iphone 5 gets launched.
I am waiting for the prices to be released tomorrow in UK. just to see what the contracts turn out to be.
Why to buy the new Iphone 4s if that looks exactly same as the Iphone 4. Features matter, but iphone 5 is
    what I wanted to buy.

  • IPhone 4- antenna issues past 9/30?

    Good morning-
I would like to purchase the new iPhone 4 but am concerned about antenna issues since Apple has stopped giving out the free cases. Has Apple fixed the issues with the antenna, or will I have to purchase a case on my own, and hope there aren't any more problems? I currently have a 3G and haven't had too much of a problem with the antenna or reception.

    http://www.apple.com/iphone/case-program/
We now know that the iPhone 4 antenna attenuation issue is even smaller than we originally thought. A small percentage of iPhone 4 users need a case, and we want to continue providing them a Bumper case for free. For everyone else, we are discontinuing the free case program on all iPhone 4s sold after September 30, 2010. We are also returning to our normal returns policy for all iPhone 4s sold after September 30. *Users experiencing antenna issues should call AppleCare to request a free Bumper case.*

  • Antenna Issue

Every single time I switch to my left I drop calls with out fail. Really every time and no matter how i hold it. Has anyone tried the new case that Jobs offered us? Does it help? If this ends up being a deal with it issue as apple is trying to say right now then this is just an absolute atrocity. They have done so well with their support up until now, the should have tested more, now they sold to many of them that they cant issue a recall.

This is all BS. Imagine, all that technology room, and a glitch like this one. Absurd. Apple should just give it in and kill Iphone 4 and replace for a Iphone 4x that would not carry the problem or the stigma.
I, myself, will postpone replacement of my current iPhone until this problem is solved by Apple.
As to the poor blind followers of Apple, it should have a lot of consideration for them and replace their phones. It is a cash loss, YES, but I'll bet you it will be even worse because it will configure a REPUTATION LOSS which for Apple is much more expensive.
In time: the comparison with the Blackberry antenna locations is joke. Why did Apple not do the same and placed the band at the bottom (hellooo)

  • Iphone4 white antenna issues

I bought iphone4 white, antenna issues are still there and i was advised to buy case. Is it very common problem

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4389
Already been there/done that before coming here.
The issue, if the iphone4 is held in the palm, the reception drops to nothing.
Out of palm, back to 4 lines 3G. In palm, nothing. Out of palm, 3G.
And so on and so on...
Assuming the antenna is the metal strip along the edge,
holding the phone is affecting the antenna/reception.
As far as apple express lane support...
Had them call me (land line), apple express rep took phone info, took my tele # in case we were disconnected, put me on hold to look up some guidance, 5 minutes later while on hold connection lost
    followed by a busy signal.
Hung-up, waited for a callback (i.e. in case we were disconnected), nothing...
No callback. No return call. And they had my #.
So I'll wait and try monday when possibly better informed techs are on call (hopefully).
Or wait for more customers of this new "white" iphone4 to discover the issue,
and take the rant national, as was the case with the black iphone4.
Or maybe I'll just take advantage of AT&T's 30-day return policy and switch to the samsung android.
    We will see...
