My PS3 Slim is leaking oil

My PS3 just isn't capable of running games as they should. Examples: FIFA the ball is invisible or the match just never loads up, or inte the Last of Us where not even the start menu loads up. I noticed that when I took out my Bluray disks that they were covered in an oily liquid with no particular smell. I also saw some of it leaking out of the disk slot on the PS3 itself. I read online that someone had a similar problem but they never came to a solution. Eventually their PS3 broke down completely and I wouldn't want that happening to my PS3. I want to know if anyone has experienced the same issue and if so what the solution is? My warranty has ended so I don't think Sony would be kind enough to repair it or send me a new one. Any tips or responses would be immensly appreciated.

This is lubricant used on the BD drive. It doesn't normally get transferred to the disk, unless it's in the disk-insertion mechanism, or on the clamping plates.
In your case I'm thinking the insertion rollers.
Depending on your mechanical prowess, you could take the PS3 apart yourself and clean, or - more recommend - have a word with a repair shop, and have them give you a quote for looking at it.

  • Connecting PS3 slim and Timecapsule

We are having a heck of a time getting our new PS3 Slim to work with our TimeCapsule (wireless internet connection). The PS3 sees the Time Capsule, but the PS3 queries against the Time Capsule and then times out before it ever gets an IP address from the Time Capsule. We have WPA2 encryption.
We have other computers using our network, so we know connectivity is not the problem. We can't seem to get the PS3 to talk to Aiport.
Anyone had this problem and have a solution?
I am also getting a DNS error 80710102 on the Playstation
    Any ideas to fix this?

First try removing all security and encryption for the sake of troubleshooting and see if you can get them to handshake. If so, try WEP or WPA.
If you must have WPA2, another solution is to get an Airport Express and plug it into a powerpoint near the PS3. Using the Airport Express utility, configure the Express to 'Join a wireless network' and tick the option to 'allow ethernet clients'. Then connect the Express to the PS3 using a network cable.

  • Connecting Time Capsule to PS3 Slim

We are having a heck of a time getting our new PS3 Slim to work with our TimeCapsule (wireless internet connection). The PS3 sees the Time Capsule, but the PS3 queries against the Time Capsule and then times out before it ever gets an IP address from the Time Capsule. We have WPA2 incryption. So we looked on Google, and someone said we needed to convert the password to a hexidecimal string (which we did using Airport Utility). When we got this string, it was all cap letters and numbers. When we entered it, the PS3 told us the format was wrong, which we assume is because it needs a lowercase letter, which the Aiport Utility did not give us.
We have other computers using our network, so we know connectivity is not the problem. We can't seem to get the PS3 to talk to Aiport.
Anyone had this problem and have a solution? Do we need to change to WEP? Do we need to change the Time Capsule password to a numeric string? We are at a loss.
    Thanks.

We have our PS3 connected wirelessly to our Time Capsule > ADSL Modem > Internet, first I used the Easy option to configure the PS3 then once I had a connection went back and Customised the settings.
One thing to make sure of is the *WAP2-PSK (AES)* Key make sure you enter it correctly as mistaking a capitol I - i for a lowercase l -L will mess everything up.
    *PS3 Network Settings*
    *Internet Connection:* Enabled
    *Connection Method:* Wireless
    *Signal Strength:* 90%
    SSID: *****
    BSSID: *****
    Channel: 1
    Security: WPA2-PSK (AES)
    *WPA Key:* *****
    *Address Settings:* Automatic
*IP Address:* ***** (I set my Time Capsule to reserve this IP Address for my PS3)
    Subnet: 255:255:255:0
*Default Router:* (This shows my Time Capsule IP Address)
    *Primary DNS:* 212.159.6.10
    *Secondary DNS:* 212.159.6.9
    MAC: *****
    MTU: Automatic
    *Proxy Server:* Do Not Use
UPnP: Not Available (I set to enable when going through the setup process)
    NAT: Type 2
Another thing to note after you have successfully got your connection running is the DNS addresses. I did have ours set to Automatic which was then using the Time Capsule, however going onto VidZone I could not get videos to play, Playstation Home was fine. So I went back into the settings and changed the +Primary and Secondary DNS+ addresses to the ones my ISP states on their website. After this all the videos in VidZone run like a dream.
    Hope this helps some people.

  • Design flaw in PS3 Slim

My new PS3 slim 160gb won't read properly formatted (FAT32) USB mass storage devices that my old 80gb PS3 will read just fine, with one odd exception. My old PS3 has since died.
I had made a backup of my old PS3 using the backup utility with a new, 1TB Western Digital MyEssentials external hard drive. The old PS3 had no problem recognizing this drive. When I tried to do the restore on the new PS3, it wouldn't recognize the drive.
After trying three other FAT 32 USB devices on the Slim with no luck, I Googled the problem and found a blog in which others had the exact same issue. I did find a workaround solution offered by one poster for the WD external drive. Oddly enough, if you pull the USB cable from the drive itself, plug the cable into the Slim, then, very slowly, insert the cable back into the drive, but not all the way. When you feel the drive start spinning, slowly plug it in the rest of the way and you'll see the white LED on the drive light up, and bingo, the Slim has recognized the drive. Only problem is, you'll need to do this every time you start up the Slim, which is a real pain if you're trying to use the drive for permanent additional storage.
One poster said he was able to get a Seagate external drive to connect with no problems but I haven't verified this. Sony customer service denies that a design flaw exists because they don't guarantee that all FAT32 USB devices will connect, however, as I said before, I had no problem getting any of these devices connected to my old PS3. Therefore, no doubt about it, this is a design flaw. I'm going to talk tonight with an attorney friend of mine who's firm specializes in consumer product law to see if we have a legal remedy.
    I'll keep you all posted.

  • PS3 slim or PS3 super slim?

Hi everyone, I'm debating on which ps3 i should buy...the slim or super slim? what do you guys think?

Slim would be the better choice.
The super slim you have to make sure the disc is snapped on otherwise it will scratch or even break inside.
Second reason is the lens is exposed to dust more easily increasing the chance of it breaking down.
Upside of a super slim its quieter and the bundle deals are enticing but other than that worth choosing it over a regular slim

  • Leaking oil from adapter

My iphone 5 usb power adapter is leaking a yellowish kind of oily liquid and has stopped working. The usb cable is fine and is working with my laptop. Anyone else have this very strange problem. Does the adapter contain any oily liquid?

Try Contacting apple if any damage to your device has been done because you might be able to get your money back and also make sure you dont touch the oil or let the oil leak on anything. The oil could be harmful so becareful. But if all fails just buy a new one.

  • PS3 slim on a 2001 Cinema Display?

    Hi,
I was wondering..... can you connect a new PS3 to an 2001 cinema display via HDMI to VGI cable?
I don't want to go out and buy a random cable if the monitor can't handle it. If not, is there something else I can use?
    Thanks,
    Alex

Most likely it won't work. Not sure I understand your second question, "is there something else I can use?" You mean like a TV?

  • New PS3 Slim Question

I just purchased a New 160GB PS3 from Best buy today. I looked at the all the boxes and they was a simple piece of tape on them instead of the circular seal on most ps3's and the controller on the inside was not wrapped in anything. It doesn't seem to have any damage on the system or controller but do you think its possible they put refurbished systems in there and tried to sell them for new? Since the there was no usual tape seal and the controller was not wrapped I am thinking about taking it back and buying it elsewhere.
    Any ideas?

Well, simplest way is to hook it up and see if it asks you to do setup.

I'm NOT an employee of Best Buy, or Geek Squad, though I did work as an Agent for a year 5 years ago. None of my posts are to be taken as the official stance that Best Buy will take on your situation. My advice is just that, advice.

I bought a Ps3 super slim for Christmas but it keeps freezing. Can I exchange of for the ps3 slim instead. It has not been 30 days yet please help

    Hi MrxGameFreak,
There's no reason your brand new PS3 should be locking up on you. Please don't hesitate to bring it back. As long as you're still within the 30 day return period, you're welcome to swap it out with anything you'd like.

  • Apple TV vs. PS3 for photos & home movies

I'm sure some of you have both of these units and have a comparison as to which unit displays photos & home movies better (sharpness, color, etc.) I recently bought the Apple TV and I'm not that impressed with the photo quality and 960x540 home movie recoding quality. The PS3 outputs at 1080p, and should be superior to the Apple TV in quality. I know you can use the Medialink software on the PS3 to interface with my Mac's iphoto & itunes.
Looking for some real world comparisons from owner's of both systems.
    Thanks guys

I own both, use a Mac for my computer, and have owned my PS3 longer than the Apple TV.
Honestly, the PS3 sees more use than my ATV. However, for simple viewing of iTunes media on my HDTV, the ATV works well whereas I know I'd have issues with the PS3.
I use a transcoding media app on OSX that allows me to browse through my videos on my PS3 as if my iMac were a media server. The system works quite well, honestly. I'd say that it is EASIER in a way to view non-Apple-formated videos this way, but if it is a standard that iTunes or ATV can play in HD, then the ATV works better and outputs it at the HD res without transcoding loss like I'd see through the PS3-media server linkage.
For example: I have all of Farscape and Babylon 5 bought through the ITMS and thus watch it on my HDTV via the ATV. Also, my other videos that iTunes plays play though the ATV perfectly well without some of the network hitching I get when trying to view them transcoded via the PS3 media server (I'm convinced this is a case of my iMac needing more RAM to let my 2 cores do their work..... if only I had the new 27" iMac.... drool . . . . 4 cores available do to the encoding.....) for the HD versions (for example, the HD version of the popular "where the **** is matt" youtube video).
As an iTunes interface to an HDTV, the ATV does its job and does it well (with some caveats). Outside of that, the PS3 excels. Also, HD movies through the ITMS are nothing compared to their blueray counterparts. Then again, the PSN video store pales in comparison to the ITMS. Star Trek is available in HD through the PSN video store, but the audio is only in 2ch stereo. Sad. I have the movie on blu-ray (which has the audio in 5.1 Dolby TrueHD), so I'm not sure what the HD version is on the ITMS.
I see the 2 systems (ATV and PS3) as complementing each other. My PS3 is my blu-ray player, non-iTunes video player, and game system. My ATV is my iTunes interface for my Home Theater system. However, as I live in an apartment, I more generally just use my apple remote and control the audio on my iMac directly. Still, the ATV is quite useful for nights when I just want to rent a video (the PSN video store is lacking, and the new netflix service for the PS3 requires a Netflix authorization disc to use in the PS3.... most likely due to contractual agreement..... (thankyou M$ for binding Sony's hands like that, you know you're the ones who did that with your money paid to Netflix). The ITMS through the ATV is therefore easier for me to use and more expansive on video selection (though I still have yet to see Gods and Generals appear on the ITMS video store.... grrr), so for HD rental, the ATV is the choice I make.
As far as photos.... since my Photos are in the standard place on my mac, the ATV is more readily there to display them all than is my PS3, which would require me to have up and running the media server app on my Mac (which I don't always have running).
So, like I said, the 2 systems complement each other. Still, for the specific use you're talking about, I think the ATV does just fine. However, if you're looking for a comprehensive system, I might suggest the PS3 first, as you get the PSN, blu-ray player, and game system all in one. If you can, though, BOTH is even better (and affordable since the PS3 Slim now came out.... though I have been hearing gripes about some problems with people's PS3 Slims.... but that's in Sony's Disc. forums, and it is like the ones here: kind of an emergency room).

  • PS3 Only getting 10mbps through ethernet.

Hey everyone. I have came across a strange issue recently with my PS3 slim 160GB 3003A (Recent model). It is the only device on my network that is getting 10mbps, as my other devices including my PC and xbox 360 are getting full 100mbps speed (all ethernet).
I have a BT Homehub 3 Type A, on a fastpath profile and don`t suffer from latency issues or ping changes while online gaming. I get a solid 17ms ping to many servers.
Online gaming is fine though but I do download a lot of stuff from PSN and it takes an age to download because of this, I have tried three new cat 6 ethernet cables and changed the ethernet cables to different ports on the back of the router and makes no difference at all. Help would be appreciated it is a strange issue.
I switched to wireless and recieve faster speeds lol but would prefer not to use wireless for my gaming. So ummm...what gives?
I also have recieved the following message yesterday on my PS3 saying "An ethernet cable is disconnected" this is probably a different issue to the speed recieved through ethernet, I hope both are fixable.
P.S I haven`t tried a different router to test it on and I don`t have access to a spare one at this moment in time sorry.

  • 3.6.7 Lag, Delay, Memory Leak Checked But Not Fixed?

Well, open a tab, try to open another tab, about 20 seconds of appearing frozen passed.
Okay let's try clicking the first tab again, oh well, another 20 seconds frozen with cursor not even usable.
Okay let's try clicking the url bar, oops, another 20 seconds of delay, and the program is up to 180 megs of memory, that spikes down to 150, then builds again, apparently a new routine is added to "clear" the memory every so often, however, THE MEMORY LEAK ITSELF REMAINS UNTOUCHED.
Maybe Firefox has become so disgustingly bloated with worthless and useless "innovations" that stroke the egos of its developers that, finally, the program is worthless for daily use.
Second Life is a program that's been around for a very long time, and just open firefox, then Second Life. First, you log in to second life wearing the image of the webpage you have open in Firefox. Then you notice that Second Life is lagging endlessly, sometimes with 5 second delays trying to select anything. Close Firefox, and Second Life performs properly. Amazing isn't it?
Memory issue is THE MOST IMPORTANT FIRFOX ISSUE but apparently no one cares, too busy appreciating themselves for some part of the program that was their idea I guess.
Who cares if 3.5 Firefox is the first to have video without a plug in, if, the program is memory leaking like the BP well was leaking oil??
But, as one can see with a memory monitoring program, Firefox now, finally after almost 20 revisions, has a "fix," to lower the amount of memory along some time-line that seems to keep it from accumulating to 500 megs in a matter of minutes, but, WITHOUT ACTUALLY FIXING THE CAUSE OF THE MEMORY LEAK.
I wonder if these volunteers for Firefox are unemployed, and that's why they have time to work on Firefox, their lack of competence the reason they are unemployed, long before this recession.
FIX THE MEMORY LEAK THAT STARTED WITH 3.5 ALREADY! PUT EVERYONE ON THAT INSTEAD OF ANYTHING ELSE!
P.S. My extensions have nothing to do with Firefox's lack luster performance. The issues have existed with or without them installed. Reality: Firefox programmers are busy with head inserted in hindquarters, feeling good about themselves for volunteering, irrespective of coding pure junk. Quality and doing what is right have apparently been thrown out the door, and the message, "a free internet means you get worthless products" the message of Mozilla.org.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == version 3.5

same basic idea- ctrl-shift-del (clear everything) and it went from taking >700megs on startup (PC XP,all addins disabled) to ~60megs.
Better wtf is what was stored in that 650+ megs?

  • PS3 and Advanced Format Issues (scorpio blue 500gb)

I just bought a scorpio blue 500gb that has advanced format i.e. 4k sectors and it is not working correctly with my PS3 slim with 4.75 firmware. I believe it's due to the advanced format tech used on the drive. Symptoms are constant corruption, PS3 rebuilds the database often after a cold start.very slow boot up sometimes, not everytime, but sometimes the drive indicator is solid for a long time and the screenstays black, sometimes it won't boot at all. I put a older scorpio blue 320 from 2008 and all the symptoms went away.  The 500gb seems to work just fine in a USB enclosure when I format it on windows. Is there something special that needs to be done to these advanced format drives for the PS3?

    Hi,
As a recommendation, check on the PS3 forums to see if they have any specific information about this. I haven't seen any post about this on the community.
