My Quicktime don't play .mov files

I just got a laptop MacOX 10.2.8
Quicktime 6.5.3 was include with MacOX Install CD
The problem is that when I try to play a .mov file, a Quicktime error message appear :
"You may experience problems playing a video track [videoName] because the required compressor could not be found. Would you like to close the movie or continue ? "
then only the sound track is playing but not the video !
What should I do ?!?
Thank you
Yan

Here is the URL of one of the .mov that work on a friend's computer, but not on my quicktime :
http://www.lifeproductions.ca/83-FreeVideo_Play.html?TitleCat=Final%20Hour&TitleVid=Evolution%20vs%20Irreducible%20Co mplexity&path=Videos/mac/FinalHour/FH02/FH02_CreationLow.mov&w=160&h=136&format=mac
Do you think I would have to upgrade my OS 10.2 to 10.3 so that I can use QT 7 unstead of QT 6 or is there any other solution ?
Thank you
Yan

Hi...I have the OS X v10.6.8 but my QuickTime is not playing .mov files. How can I fix this?
Depends of the specific kind of file you are trying to play. MOV refers to the file container. Any data compatible with the system used to create the file can be placed in an MOV file. If you don't have the same codecs available on your computer to play back the file or if your version of the QT player does not expect expect the encoded data to be in an MOV file container, then it cannot/will not play the file. Use the Finder Info window, media player Inspector/Information window, or a dedicated utility to determine what compression formats were used to create the MOV file and then install the required codec(s) if available.

  • Quicktime can´t play .mov files

Iphoto doesn´t recognize movies from iphone (.mov files)
When I attach my iphone to import movies I made with my iphone 4 into iphoto, Iphoto tell´s me it can´t read the format (.mov files).
Quicktime cannot play .mov files either. I reinstalles ILife´11, that didn´t help. Importing the files into imovie doesn´t work either, because imovie always crashes. I can´t drag and drop the movies from my iphone via iphoto to my desktop - does anyone know how to do that?
Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Been to the Genius Bar, but they couldn´t help.

In case anyone has the same problem, this was my solution:
    1. install Quicktime 7 from your old snow leopard CD, don´t download from the internet
    2. then follow the instructions that Neutronjon gave in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3211124?start=0&tstart=0, if you have the same error message
I have had this problem for a year now, tried all sorts of things, and this finally worked!

  • Quicktime will not play .mov files since Lion installation

When using Quicktime 10.6, I am receiving the error message "...file could not be opened. A required codec isn't available." when attempting to open .mov files.  Prior to installing OS X Lion, there were no issues with playing .mov files.

I'm having the same problem. Using a clean install of Mac OS X (10.7) Lion and QuickTime 10.1.
    If I go to finder:
I can click on Icon's Play arrow and the Movie will play in the icon.
I can click on the file icon and press the spacebar and the file will play in QuickLook.
If I doubleclick on the icon to open the file in QuickTime, I get the "...file could not be opened. A required codec isn't available." message.
If I right click on the icon and click open with... QuickTime, I get the "...file could not be opened. A required codec isn't available." message.

  • Quicktime won't play .mov files recorded on Olympus recorder

I've got an Olympus pocket video recorder. but Quicktime will not play the files recorded on it. I get the error message "The document could not be opened. This media may be damaged."
However, the files  play in iTunes if I import them and the preview plays if I select the icon and hit the space bar. But I need to use the Trim facility in Quicktime to do quick trimming on them.
This is the MediaInfo information for one - can anyone shed any light, please?

  • HT3775 QuickTime Player cannot play "mov" file

    Hi,
I have a problem to play "mov" file.
    regards,

As Linc said, download VLC media player. Quicktime has limited codecs and would require a plugin to play .mov files, but I personally prefer VLC over any plugin available.

  • Quicktime won't play .mov files?

I have the latest Quicktime - Quicktime Player 7. I'm trying to open an HD 720p30 .mov file in Quicktime, but the screen comes up white, seconds later turns black and stays that way. I can hear the audio, just can't see anything.
I'm using a PC, but the files came from a MAC. When I exported the files from the MAC I selected the export for MAC & PC Compatibility. What to do?
Could it be the video card? Do I need a diff. video codec besides H.264?
    Please help...

My guess is that you made the file using Final Cut (or have it installed on the Mac). You've got a pretty "raw" file with nearly no compression.
HDV is an editing codec and it isn't available in QuickTime for Windows (or Mac's without FCP).
Use H.264 (and some audio compression, too) to view it on a PC with QuickTime Player.

  • Quicktime won't play movie files

I upgraded my iMac from 10.5._ to 10.6.4 and now my video files won't play on Quicktime 10 by double-clicking. I have to drag them to the Quicktime icon on the dock. How do I set the iMac to play use Quicktime as a player when I double-click?

brianak welcome to the discussion forums- How about if you highlight your file, then command-i, and in this info panel select *open with* QuickTimePlayer and *change all.*
    Hope this helps.

  • Quicktime not playing .mov files

i have a problem with quicktime. it doesn't play .mov files. if i try to play .mov files that are embedded in a .pdf file, a window opens but stays blank, although the progress bar moves. if i try to open the files in quicktime, there's no window, just the progress bar that moves. i run the latest version. i've already tried reinstalling - didn't help, uninstalling completely and installing - didn't help.
    help?
    many thanks!

    Quicktime>Quicktime Player Preferences>Advanced
Click on the MIME Settings button.
In the next window that opens up make sure that Streaming-Streaming movies is enabled (checked).
While you’re at it make sure all the boxes are enabled by clicking on the corresponding triangles so that they are pointed down.
This will show the “hidden” boxes especially the *QuickTime Movie* box. This box will enable you to play .mov files.
    Click the OK button.

Both the AVI and the MOV file extensions refer to the file container and not the compressed data the file contains. Both are generic file containers in that each may contain any valid combination of audio and/or video data that is compatible with the codec component configuration of the system on which the file was created. On the other hand, whether a file is playback compatible, conversion compatible, and/or edit compatible depends on the data actually contained in the file container. So, you are basically dealing with two separate issues here—the container and what is inside it.
Basically, if you want to make your files ediit compatible with iMovie, you must change your file container to one that is acceptable to iMovie and convert the data to edit compatible audio and/or video compression formats as may be necessary. The best approach is to determine what codecs were actually used to create the original AVI files and add them to your system if possible. In most cases a codec package like Perian can be added to your system's codec component configuration to may the AVI file playable. Once they are playable, in the QT 7 app then they can be chnged or converted to file types and compression formats that can be edited in iMovie. (While Perian handles most codecs commonly used to create AVI files, it does not handle all possibilities and, while the Perian codec package still works under cureent Mac OS versions, its development group has decided to drop further development/support of the package.)
Background: AVI is a file container originally developed by Microsoft back in 1992 but for which official support was discontinued about 11 years. Despite its limitations, Windows users still tend to use this file based on its open source ease of use and generic nature, thus, making its use so popular that most users are unwilling to switch to more modern but less generic file types. Since some AVI legacy compression formats have never been transcoded for the Mac or use beyond OS 9 or OS X PPC platforms, it is often important to know what specific compression formats are contained in the AVI file to know which codecs to add to your system and which not to add in order to avoid possible codec conflicts.
You can use many different converters to convert AVI files to iMovie edit compatible files. Most third-party apps contain their own buit-in codecs which do not relay on the Mac codec component configuration. Free ones, like HandBrake, usually have limited conversion capabilities while those that have more varied outputs are usually commercial in nature and will cost you additional cash. QT 7 Pro or the free MPEG Streamclip app allow you to access you own system's component configuration and use any available codec component like DV, AIC, MPEG-4, H.264, Photo JPEG, etc.—all of which are iMovie compatible for editing purposes—but only after making the AVI file QT 7 player compatible.
In order to determine what compression formats wewre used in your AVI files you can
    1) Try checking the Finder "Info" window,
    2) Use the "Inspector", "Media Info", or "Properties" window of any player app that will open the file, or
    3) Use a general media utility app like "MediaInfo" to read the file characteristics.

  • Problems playing .mov files in QuickTime 7.2.0

    Hey everyone!
I have a problem with my QuickTimePlayer.exe application. It will play all other movies just fine, except for .mov files. It will open them and play .mov files, the sound will be fine, but the video is extremely choppy.
I FINALLY got to play .mov files by uninstalling QuickTime 7.2.0 and installing the Vista Codec Package 4.4.8, which contains QuickTime Alternative. The only problem is that it doesn't come with QuickTimePlayer.exe, which is what I want my .mov files to open with.
After hours of installing, uninstalling, and re-installing codecs, I discovered that it wasn't a codec problem at all. It was the QuickTimePlayer.exe application that was the issue.
But what's weird is that the exact same version of QuickTime on another computer will run .mov files *WITH QUICKTIMEPLAYER.EXE!!* So there's something going on with some settings in my computer.
I can't seem to figure this out. Does anyone else know what the problem could be? Thanks in advance!
    Brent

I've discovered the problem!! It was the latest release of the NVIDIA nForce drivers that were the issue.
For as to WHY this specifically affected the playback of .mov files, I can imagine how. It's weird how the one thing you least expect to be the problem actually IS the problem.
Anybody have any idea how it affects it?

  • Are there any digital/video frames that will play .mov files?

are there any digital/video frames that will play .mov files?

    Hi
Not understanding Your Question - I can only guess
.mov - are no specific Video Format (Codec) it is a container (read folder) and can hold Codecs many program can use and NOT.
QuickTime Player use to open many of them - try this and if it opens then Open Inspector [ cmd + I ] and read
    • Video Format (Codec): nnnnnnnnnn
    • Frame Rate: yyyyyyy
    What does they say
When QT-Players don't open - I use VLC-Player (Google it and download for free). It use to take most of the Codecs.
Yours - May be far out in the Blue - Bengt W

  • My quicktime can't play avi file

HI everyone does someone know why my latest quicktime can't play avi file?

Let me tell you what are you doing wrong...
you just followed the wrong road try this one instead and you will love it.
*1st of all*: Dont pay attention to QuickTime, no matter what movie you want to view
just download and install VLC Media Player and your worries about formats, video codecs, audio codecs, multi zone dvd reproduction will be over in a sec!
just "open as" > VLC Media Player and you will see everything and if you have a subtitle file, just drag it into the movie

When I 1st used QT after upgrading to ML, I received a message saying that a codec was missing, and that accordingly QT  could not play the files.  Just now, after tinkering with VSL in vain, I re-launched QT, and opened what had been a '.mov'-file, only to find that it is now an '.mpg'-file.  How that transformation occurred, I do not know, but the result is that QTwill play the file perfectly well.
I am back with QT, and many thanks to you all that have tried to help.
