My RAM is not fully in RAM Preview

Hi!
I have a problem with RAM Preview and rendering in AE cs5...when i finish a composition i click on RAM Preview and in task manager my CPU is going on 100% and my RAM is load just 1,8 Gb from the total of 4Gb...I looked over the Motherboard specs to see the RAM compatibility and is nothing wrong....my pc sistem is Athlon II x2 250, MotherBoard: Gigabyte MA770T-UD3, RAM: 4Gb Elixir DUal C, HDD: Seagate 500Gb 7200 RPM, Graphic Card: MSI Nvidia GT 240 on a Windows 7 Ultimate 64x. Is there a solution to unlock my RAM from AECS5 or WIndows?

Windows 7 Ultimate 64x
Ah, and where do you think that one runs along with tons of drivers, services and other tools? You never have full 4GB to begin with. Similarly, when AE loads, all its program components cann occupy another not so minor part of your RAM. None of that RAM is accessible to be used to cram footage in it once it is occupied, so what you see is perfectly normal. You need considerably more RAM to exploitz the benefits of 64bit applications. that's the only real and hard truth here. 4GB is really just the bare minimum.

  • RAM preview audio will not play through bluetooth headphones

I am using bluetooth headphones (Jaybird Freedom Sprint) to try and edit audio/video in after effects. However, when I go to Preferences>Audio Output Mapping and choose "Freedom Sprint" and click OK, close the preference window, and it will automatically go back to the default "Built in Output" when I open it back up. It will only play the sound through the Mac Pro tower I am using. Is there a way to get the headphone option output to stay permanently?? Is there a reason why it is not staying selected?  Another thing I forgot to mention is that all other sounds work (like iTunes, volume up/down) through the headphones except for the audio RAM preview in After Effects. How can I disable the audio from playing through the tower? Very frustrating!
BTW - the only time headphones actually work is when they are plugged into the tower. These ones obviously can't be plugged in.
    Thanks! (Screenshots provided for help)

Thanks! I definitely did try that first... (trying to find a solution with the headphones). You can't find any info about them online/their website. Regardless though, After Effects will not allow me to play the audio output through any other device except for the Mac Pro tower - even playing it through the LCD Cinema Display won't work.
    Thanks for your reply

  • After Effects will RAM Preview not in real time

Hi, we have 3 adobe After Effects CC up to date here, we are working on a 60fps project in HD 1080. Nothing crazy.
We have 20 Gigas of ram. Mac OS 10.8.5 octo core 2011. ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 Mo. SSD disque crucial m500 256 gigas.
We have a lot of problem with Ram Preview. (on every project)
Everything works fine until, we don't know why, the ram preview is getting not realtime, like 30fps or under.
Sometimes purge memory do the trick but not always.
We need to reboot and it works again, but few minutes.
We made a test on CS5 and it works well realtime, but same problem on CS6.
I tried to delete all the preferences to check but no difference.
We are working with nfs network account but i always redirect disk cache to local disk (set to 20 gigas) and also media conformed cache (database and cache)
We are getting mad, it's really hard to work that way, rebooting each time.
Maybe an issue with Global performance cache introduced in CS6 ?
It's not a footage/project issue because the entire project (a blend of tiff, png, prores422) can be played 120 frames/sec without any problem on after CS5, after CS6 (when it works), CC (when it works).
The problem is when working on project, changing layers, adding effects, After CC starts not be slow and not realtime using Ram Preview.
Also, when we are previewing, a lot of ram is not used, it only uses like 20% of the ram.
We hope for a nice patch very soon ....

60 fps is a very high frame rate not usually supported. If your footage is shot at 60i then it is probably 29.97 fps when converted to progressive video. If the footage is actually 60 fps then you will be better off, and by better off I mean more folks and streaming services will be able to view your video at the proper speed.
So my recommendation is to first determine your audience and then set up your comp appropriately. In all my years in the business I have only delivered one high frame rate project and that was 48 fps.
The other thing I would recommend is to optimize your system for AE. That does not necessarily mean throw all your available ram and processors at the app. There are some good recommendations here: Optimizing After Effects Performance

  • RAM previewing and rendering not working correctly

    Hi,
Today I was just about finished editing a video on CS6 and then when I'm about to add the last effect and render it it stuffs up on me:(. What happens is that while RAM previewing at some point during the loading of the preview it will stop loading, It will then proceed to play the ram preview on loop and when I press a button to stop it a small box pops up in the centre of my screen and the ram preview bar to show what has loaded (the one which shows green for parts that are loaded and blue for cached) turns black and sometimes other parts of after effects turn black. This has happened before and I fixed it by uninstalling and reinstalling After Effects about 6 times. I would do that this time though I would like to know the cause of it and any possible fixes as it is quite irritating. Another thing that may be happening is the RAM usage is slowly filling as I render. This has happened before on my laptop and I did not manage to fix it though it was not related to the first issue that time. The last time when it happened on my laptop the RAM usage eventually filled up to 100% and it would no longer render. I am not sure if it is happening this time as it is still currently rendering though I will update the thread if it does. Finally my render is going very slowly, I am not sure if this issue is realted to any of the above or if it is just the effects I am using though. My memory and multiprocessing settings are using 6 cores of 7 with 2 GB of ram allocated to each with multiprocessing on. My ram allocated for other programs is 6GB. To fix these Issues so far I have tried clearing the cache, purging the memory and image cache, restarting  my computer and reinstalling after effects. My specs are:
    i7 4770k non overclocked
    GTX 780
    G.Skill Ripjaws Z 2133mhz 32GB
    Samsung 840 pro
    Seagate Barracuda
    MSI Z87-G45
    H100i cooler
    Any reply is appreciated
    Thanks in advance

How much experience do you have with AE? Ram preview can be lengthened by adjusting the resolution of the composition window, different parts of the project can be previewed using the work area, and preview length and render time are both a function of composition frame size. Complex, memory intensive effects like particle systems will reduce the render time and the length of a ram preview. Without knowing the details of your composition it's hard to say if you are running into a bug, running out of resources, or experiencing normal behavior.

  • Ram Preview not working correctly

On one machine here, when the artist goes to do a ram preview, they only get grey frames in the comp window. Either that or they get a freeze of the first frame in the render region, but no motion.
I have tried deleting prefs, zapping Pram, deleting the cache, purging memory. turning open GL on and off, all to no avail.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance

I'm not sure if RAM issues really show up during normal work. In most cases the operating system will constantly rearrange the memory allocation, so it may never touch upon that one damaged memory block. You wouldn't even know it, if it caused a crash once a week, because it could be anything. I'll admit that it's a far shot, but nonetheless one should not rule out what seems to be impossible at first sight. the only other thing I can think of would be a tool that suppresses screen refresh, which could be some widget ort system extension...

  • Ram preview not playing from first frame

Anyone else having problems with Ram preview playing back from a different spot in the timeline OTHER than the first frame? I have seen this happening consistently since the latest update (2014.2). I checked my preferences, and made sure nothing is accidentally selected to play from the last keyframe or something odd. But no. I am on a Mac Pro, running Yosemite, I googled this, and haven't seen anything. I haven't trashed my preferences yet, because I'm not sure it's a preference issue, and god...if I have to rebuild my render setting one more time...
So to give you more detail.
    - I hit "0" on my number pad to launch a ram preview
    - It LOOKS like it's rendering each frame in order
    - When I hit "0" again to playback, it starts from a random location usually about 2 - 5 seconds from the beginning of the timeline.
    - It will loop back and then play from the start of the timeline.
It's not using the current time indicator line or anything that would make sense. It's random, but near the start. I suspect it's pulling keyframe information from a nested pre-comp and using that, but there is not a keyframe in the comp I'm previewing.
I also do not have the "From Current Time" checked box in the Ram Preview options, and there are 0 skip frames in that setting as well.
If anyone has any ideas what this may be...I'd appreciate it.

  • After Effects CC on a Macbook. In RAM Preview the green progress line is not displaying. Preview works but no line to indicate progress. Is there a way to tunr the line back on?

We have two Macbook Pros running CC After Effects. Bothdo not show the green line while running RAM Preview. The Preview works but there's no way to watch its progress. Any thoughts?

It is an option in the timeline window. Upper Right Corner...
Sometimes it causes problems. Maybe that is why it is turned off.

  • After Effects RAM Preview not showing first 50 frames or so - Mac OS

So I'm on a 2012 iMac, and when i RAM preview,  it plays audio but video does not show until about 50 or 60 frames in, its like a glitch or lag thats started recently, so it makes ram previewing from a certain time a real pain as i then miss the exact part i want and it c matches up with video a second or two later, i can't find any solutions, please help!!

As Andrew says, Adobe and Apple are working on figuring this bug out. See the known issues section of this page: After Effects good to go with Mac OSX v10.10 (Yosemite)
If you let the RAM preview loop at the end of its playback and play through again, it should be smooth and issue-free.

  • RAM Preview - Not in realtime

    Hello
On my computer, whenever I try to playback somehting to see a preview, it plays at 17 frames per second, with red text saying, Not in realtime. Is there anyway that this can be remedied?

Make sure you are depressing the Zero key for ram preview. I bumped into this the other day because I had selected AJA Kona as my display option in Preferences. When I switched it back to Computer it played back in real time. The other reason might be a very complicated sequence on a computer with slow processers or not enough ram. You always need to share the details of your system when asking questions like this so folks know what you are using.

  • AE CC ram previews very slow - no GPU support? Newbie trying to become not newbie, falling at first hurdle...

Hello. I'm currently trialling After Effects CC though Adobe Cloud. But I've hit a snag immediately.
I have an HD video edit in Premiere Pro which I want to dynamically import into AE to work on some bits.... I have imported the project file into AE, it seems to open just fine but the playback is intensely slow!
I have an uncertified GPU - a Nvidia Geforce gtx 460 - too old? I was expecting it to help out a bit, I'm not doing anything too badass, just colour correcting a bit of HD footage.
My processor is an i5 3.4ghz 4 core.
Perhaps I'm missing something fundamental here!? Please tell me what I'm completely failing to grasp
    Thank you for your time,
    Tony

Yup -- you're misssing a very basic item: AE doesn't work like Premiere Pro.  It's not anything like PP, and it doesn't behave like it.
One way is the method you need to  play video.  Space bars just don't work.  You need to do a RAM Preview -- hit the zero key on the numeric keypad, let AE render the frames it can, and then it plays them back as fast as it can.

  • After Effects will not RAM Preview in real time

Recently I have started working on a new project and can't work on it because my RAM Previews are not in real time anymore. I have only had this problem since I started this project a few days ago. Every other project I have done I've never had this problem before.
I have 10 GB of ram allocated to After Effects, my clips are in 59.94 fps which I have set the composition to as well. When I ram preview it tells me 50.019/59.94 I know what this mean, I understand it's telling me to change my composition's frame rate to 50 frames, however if I do this then music plays too slow. Right now my problem is that the clips aren't playing fast enough for me to see if my editing and time syncing is acurate. When I render the video everything is synced up fine but this is making my editing very inconvenient and I would like a fix please. I tried: Clearing my disk and media cache, unchecking "render multiple frames at once", taking off all effects on the clips, using different clips, AND even reinstalling After Effects CS6 but nothing has worked. I really badly need a fix to this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks!!

    > The clips are in 59.94 frames, so the composition is in 59.94 frames. If when I upload to the internet it goes down in frame rate so be it.
You are misunderstanding the typical video workflow.
Composition setting are supposed to match the characteristics of the intended output, not necessarily the characteristics of the imported footage. This is how you ensure that what you preview exactly matches what you output and what your viewers will see. Consider, also, that most compositions use assets with many different frame rates, sizes, etc.
    > I do have a large monitor but I've been using this monitor since December and haven't had a problem with it until now.
Great. But you're having a problem now. And it's because of a bottleneck somewhere between your RAM and drawing the pixels to the screen. One more reason that this might be happening is that you're running a GPU-heavy application; note that web browsers can also be GPU hogs these days.

  • How do i make the ram preview render the whole thing not just part of it

i have a super-fast modern desktop computer so ram isn't an issue. i want the green bar to cover the whole thing, not leave gray and blue spaces.
unrelated but while i'm here: is there a way to increase just the gamma of just the in-program composition window since i like to keep my monitor dark for my eyes but always have to increase brightness when watching movies as a result.
also is there a way to increase the text size of the ui besides increasing the text size for the whole windows 8.1?

How much RAM does your super-fast modern desktop have? AND what is the size of your composition?
If you're getting spaces between the green bar, your RAM Preview options may include skip frames.
If you don't have enough RAM to cache a large (or long) video, you can lower the resolution that you're attempting to RAM Preview (in your comp window if you're using Auto, or in the RAM Preview options).  Unfortunately, it means that you'll be trading quality of the video playback for duration of frames played.
You can adjust the exposure of the video in the comp or footage windows by using the Exposure Button
Turn up the value to over/under expose the video, but it won't change the RENDER, just the way you look at it in the window.
You can toggle the icon on/off if you have a certain value you like to keep it set to.

  • HD RAM preview not playing in realtime through Blackmagic

I've recently upgraded one of my company's Blackmagic Multibridge Pro NLEs to CS5:
    PROBLEM:
AE CS5 does not play realtime RAM preview of HD1080 video when displayed through the Blackmagic video output (even as low as 1/8 resolution).
    INFO:
1.) Lowering resolution (even down to 1/8) does not help.
2.) Matching scale % to resolution % does not help.
3.) Doing #s 1-3 in combination gets very close to realtime, but CS4 did not require all of this.
4.) If I switch AE output to "computer monitor only" I get realtime.
5.) SD comps played through Blackmagic output achieve realtime.
In CS4, HD Blackmagic output WAS realtime.  I have made all  memory/multiprocessing settings match the CS4 configuration, but this  has not helped.
Also, both AE and the Blackmagic driver are the most current version.  I have no desire to revert to CS4... Anyone have any ideas?

    To answer my own question:
I lowered the project's color settings to 8 bits per channel--and now all HD RAM previewing (even at full resolution) seems to be playing back realtime!
Hope this thread can be helpful to anyone else experiencing the same issue.

  • Reason for "RAM Preview Not In Realtime" error

I think I found a reason for why the "RAM Preview not in realtime" error pops up on the OSX version of AE. If you have your desktop background set to change every X seconds, the preview seems to suffer from that process going on in the background. Having OpenGL enabled/disabled doesn't seem to make a difference. Disabling the background image from cycling seems to remove any existing playback inconsistencies. This might have existed in earlier versions of AE than I'm using right now (as well as earlier versions of OSX), but I can't confirm that. The system I'm on is a 14GB 2.8 octocore, GeForce 8800GT, raptors & barracudas,OS 10.5.6, AE CS4 (updated).
If others can confirm this behavior, we can submit it to aebugs.

    Whoops.

  • Audio layer causes "NOT realtime" on RAM Preview

Hi I am using a new machine I built mostly for AE and music video production.
    Mac Pro 2008 - 2.8ghz 8-core
    8GB RAM
    AE CS3 + Nucleo Pro 2.0
    Areca 1261ML
I have spent some time tuning the Nucleo & AE parameters to work most effeciently and I'm happy with the performance execpt for this issue.
What I am noticing is I get 29.97 fps playback with the RAM preview and NO audio, but as soon as I check the audio layer my fps drops to 22 fps and the audio only plays for only half of the preview. Most importantly the audio gets out of sync... It is frustratingly difficult to align video and audio like I've grown use to in AE7 & 6.5
Perhaps I'm missing a preference somewhere?
My comp is 29.97 fps 640x480. My project settings are set to 44.100 khz.
    My footage is partially
    60fps 640x480, 48K audio (audio unchecked)
    30fps HD 720p , 48K audio (audio unchecked)
& mostly stop-motion jpg sequences taken from a 2MP camera.
    1 song - 44.1khz wav
All my previous projects behave similarly.
All of this plays fine with no audio. However, even 29.97 SD alone still causes "NOT realtime" playback as soon as I check the audio on. This happens no matter if it is full-res or 1/4.
    I have tried:
making sure all audio is set to 44.100Khz and also tried 48,000khz (with 48k audio)
changing the buffer size on the audio preference
    swapping out the 44.100 wav with 44.100 mp3 or a 48,000 wav
Also tried switching to an external USB audio device in the audio hardware preferences - no change
still plays back in the 22fps range...
I don't remember having this issue on my XP64 quad core machine w/AE 7.0 OR with my old dual cpu XP box running AE 6.5.
As this Mac Pro is supposed to be for music video production. This is really an important issue to me and is making my work very difficult and tedious -- or I have to just render it out like in the ole slow computer days...
*EDIT* It does play 15 fps realtime -- if I tell it to skip 1 frame (just double checked - thought it played sluggishly too) But this is kinda upsetting... It should resolve my timing issues for now.

no effects on the audio -- it's just straight wav 44.100Khz.
Preferences > Audio Hardware > Built in line output
Preferences > Audio Output Mapping > Built in line output
System Preferences > Sound > Output > Built in line output
All of these settings in any configuration produce the exact same result. Presently set to "built in line output", I have also tried using the USB output and the ones labled "built in line input/built in line output" -- no success, even if all the settings are set to the same line or pointed to different audio hardware. Buffer size also has no effect.
    I'm really stumped.
Also, my audio library is on a HDD by itself. I tried hard to set up the machine to not have issues like this...
I'd like to get a MOTU Ultralight for audio recording one day, but I don't think this is a $500 issue now. Plus, I doubt it will make a difference.
I mean 15fps works, but I miss stuff when I'm viewing stop-motion footage. I feel like I wasted a lot of money on hardware and CS3.
