My Recently Added playlist won't update when I buy a song on my iPhone

For some reason, my "Recently Added" smart playlist doesn't update when I buy a song on my iPhone 4. I have to Sync with iTunes for it to update. How can I get it back?

1. Select your Smart Playlist
2. Right Click and select "Edit Smart playlist"
3. Add a new condition "Playlist IS Music" and make sure "Live Updating" is also checked. Press Ok
4. Sync and it should work...

Ever since I started using iCloud/ iTunes Match, none of the songs on my recently added playlists show up on my iphone. As in the playlist title itself carries over, but when i open it on my iphone it's completely empty.
Please help! much appreciated.

I had a very similar issue (same playlist). After several frustrating hours of various combinations I was able to sync by changing the options to "manuall sync.." and then "dragging and dropping" the needed playlist from the iTunes Playlist list to the iPhone button (on my itunes setup/view that was from the far left column list of all of my playlist in iTunes to the far upper right "iPhone" button). To sum up "checking" the playlist and syncing didnt work, "drag and droping" the playlist did... at least for now... then I unselected the "manually manage" in the options and re-synced and all playlist were synced correctly. 'Recently Played' playlist won't update after 2.0 upgrade

I purchased the 2.0.1 update in July. Prior to the update, I would go through play various songs, then later go to the 'Recently Played' playlist and listen to them again, shuffle, etc. Since the update, this playlist will not update at all. I must have played at least 25 different songs yesterday trying to get the playlist to update, I show one song in my 'Recently Played' playlist. Still having problem after 2.1 update a week or so ago. Anyone else having this issue?

I've tried these workarounds but they don't seem to work (on any current iPod.)

There are two issues, it seems.
1) synching the results of a smart playlist from iTunes to the iPod
2) updating of smart playlists, on-the-fly, on the iPod itself
#1 is working for me. It's #2 I'm having no success with, and I'm wondering if Apple just abandoned the feature when it broke.
To reiterate. Leave the computer out of the equation for a moment. All I want is a "Recently Played" smart playlist that updates on-the-fly on the iPhone, no synching required. Is this not possible?
If not, that's a step backwards. It used to work on older iPods.

I have the same issue with my iPhone 5 (iOS 7.0.4) on a Windows7 PC updated with the very latest iTunes. My other iPode (nano - old and new) sync just fine. Only my phone is affected.
I have one album I purchased from iTunes that won't sync via a plain playlist that I made just for that album. (The song files transferred to my phone as part of the "purchased" category. But I can't sync a playlist made on my computer containing those same songs.)
Another plain playlist I made for some spoken short story files in my library won't sync either.
There are no error message that appear while syncing; nothing stating that songs didn't transfer.
Also, if I try to make a new playlist on my phone and adding the "purchased" files to it, the album cover is wrong. The files will be available in the playlist that way, but with the incorrect artwork. (No idea what happens yet if I re-sync with this phone-make playlist.)

Have you checked whether the songs are in your iTunes library? If they are, then just drag them to your purchased playlist. If they aren't, try checking for available downloads.
If none of the previous work, then get in contact directly with iTunes store support to tell them about your problem.

I'm also having the same problem. After I import new tracks into iTunes. They are not showing up in my Recently Added playlist. I checked the smart playlist settings and it is set to Live Updating. I have to quit iTunes and relaunch before the new tracks will show up. Clearly a bug. I've submitted a bug report on their feedback site.
It's not a problem with the settings of the smart playlist. I have never changed the settings of the playlist, and it only stopped updating with iTunes 10. And quitting and restarting makes the new tracks show up.

Howdy Mark,
The Recently Added playlist is a Smart Album that has specific settings to automatically add new content to that playlist. It can be recreated manually if accidentally deleted, you can use this article named Archived - iTunes: How to create a Smart Playlist found here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1801.
Choose File > New Smart Playlist.
To have iTunes add songs that match specific criteria, make sure to select "Match the following rule," then make your selections from the pop-up menus.
For example, you might want iTunes to only add songs that are by a particular artist, or songs with at least a four-star rating.
To add additional matching criteria, click the Add + button.
Here are the parameters to use when you create the new Smart Album:
1. Check the box that says Match the Following rule:
2. Change the first set of criteria to Date Added, In the Last, 2, weeks.
3. Add another line for criteria by clicking the + button
4. The second set of criteria should be as follows. Media Kind, is not, podcast.
5. Uncheck Limit To, and Match only checked items, and check Live Updating.
That when that is done you will have a new smart playlist that you can rename to Recently Added by double clicking the smart album name.

Hi,
It's just a Smart Playlist, so make a new Smart Playlist called "Recently Added". Set the rule to "Date Added is in the last two weeks" and make sure both "Match the following rule" and "Live updating" are checked. That's the same as the default "Recently Added" playlist...

Recently Added Playlist Problems

through my own stupidity, i deleted the "Recently Added" playlist from itunes. i found this quite useful, particularly with the size of my itunes library and files not always being tagged properly.
any ideas on how to get that back? doesn't come back when i update itunes.....perhaps a complete uninstall/reinstall?

Reinstall not necessary. This is simply a smart playlist which you can re-build using the following criteria: "date added is in the last" & you pick the time frame, for example 2 weeks.

I wanted to clear my Recently Added playlist and I accidently deleted it.

I was wondering if there was any way I could get the Recently Added playlist added back onto my playlists as a pre-set playlist so that when I add new songs, they go straight to the Recently Added playlist.

I accidentally deleted the recently added playlist from my computer version of itunes. when i sync with my ipod, will the list be replaced automatically? second question, can i see my account at itunes store to see what songs i most recently downloaded? thanks so much for your help.

"recently added" playlist does not sync correctly

i have an iPhone 5, ios6 and iTunes 10.7 (all German).
In iTunes i have the smart playlist "recently added". It is sorted by the "last added" field.
The playlist is setup as:
added within last 2 month, mediatype is music, only marked objects, automatic updates.
The playlist shows the correct titles in iTunes.
When the playlist is synced, the "recently added" list, has a random order.
I also found out - by chance - that i added an other playlist with lots of titles recently. They are organized in an own playlist and do not show up in the recently added list in iTunes.
But after the sync the recently added playlist shows the newly copied titles.
It seems like if the iphone does calculate it's own list and the "recently added" playlist is missinterpreted on the iphone as "titles which where recently copied to the iphone". The "date field" is not used for the playlist, only the date the files was copied.
(Hope i described the problem as good as i can and you understand what i mean)
Any suggestions?

Itunes will not open new mp3 files in Recently Added playlist

I just downloaded the newest update from itunes.
Before this, whenever i downloaded an mp3 file (not from itunes) it would open in itunes in my Recently Added playlist.
Now, when i click open in Itunes, the itunes window opens up but the file isnt in the playlist or in my library at all. I have to find the file and add it to my library. Is there a way i can fix this?

Safari prefs > General.
Tick Open safe files after downloading.

I have 2 questions concerning the 5th generation iPod
1. Why don't I have a recently added playlist as a default playlist in my iPod? The older and newer iPods have it???
2. Is there any way to copy all of the music from my iPod into my iTunes and for thesongs to remain there after I disconnect my iPod?

1.) The iPod will mirror any playlists that you have in iTunes, so if you don't have a "Recently Added" playlist on your iPod, then you probably don't have one on iTunes. Go into iTunes and go to File -> New Smart Playlist (on PC)
From there you have a few choices.
-You can make a condition "Date Added is in the last x <unit>" to have a playlist which shows anything added in that specific time frame
OR
-Check limit to x items selected by most recently added. This will show for example, your 20 or 30 or whatever you put newest items on the list.
In either case, make sure you also check Live Updating.
2.) By using only Apple's official method with iTunes, the only items you can transfer from your iPod BACK to your iTunes, are purchased items. When plugging your iPod into a computer which DOESNT have those purchased items, it will ask if you want to send a copy to the computer.
You really can't officially move ALL songs from your iPod to iTunes, unless you use some 3rd-Party Software.
