My recently saved .PSD file is nowhere to be found.

Hello!
I recently saved a few Photoshop files, and had been accessing them using the "Open Recent" menu. Well, a few minutes after I saved, the system crashed, and when I restarted and opened Photoshop, the "Open Recent" list was empty. Then I searched for the files and can't find them anywhere. I've looked by searching the file name in Finder and in Spotlight, and have even done a search for all .psd files, but the recent ones are missing.
If I create a dummy .psd file and save it, it goes to a folder with a string of letters and numbers, but I can't find the path that leads me to where that folder might be. Is there a weird hidden folder that Finder can't detect? I feel like the files must be there somewhere, because they were saved several times before the crash, but where?
Thanks!

I didn't, but I did specify the location each time that I exported. First, it was to a designated folder not too dissimilar to what you suggested. The other times, I specified the Desktop. No where to be found. More importantly, my hard drive's available MB's shows the same amount that it showed prior to starting the export.
To review my problem:
1) It's at 9 gigabytes available when I begin
2) It says it needs 6 to do my video.
3) I begin it, and it goes through the export
4) It finishes.
5) The available hard drive space is 3 GB.
6) The movie isn't where I specified.
7) I did a finder search for the file without luck.
8) I restart the CPU, and it shows 9 GB available again.

  • While editing saved PSD files, png elements have a white background when resized

    Hi,
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.  When I open a psd file that I previously worked on and saved, when I try to resize or in some way change the different elements(layers) of the layout, they get a white background inside the bounding box for that layer.  The different elements(layers) where pulled in from png files that had transparent backgrounds.  When I initially resize or change those layers the white background doesn't appear.  It only happens when I reopen the saved psd file to make some changes to it.  What do I need to do to stop that from happening?
Thanks in advance for you help!

You can't drag from the project bin in PSE 6 and 7. Items you move this way become a kind of semi-smart object on a special passthrough layer. Use copy/paste or drag from the layers palette of the png file into the main image window of the psd file.

when round tripping with photoshop cc, i get a saved psd file with my original raw,the problem is these are high file sizes and taking a lot of space, can i stop this?

That's not the workflow that I use. I have my Lightroom preferences set to create TIF images when going to Photoshop. I keep the original raw file and the TIF image (usually reduced to an 8-bit image) and only export JPEG's when they are needed to send to a lab or to send to someone over the Internet. JPEG files are highly compressed. I only create them when they are needed, and they are discarded as soon as they have been used for their intended purpose. I keep the raw file and the Photoshop-created TIF in my library. This requires extra disk space. But I always have the highest quality files available.

  • Recently saved MHTML files won't open, while earlier saved ones will open.

Recently saved MHTML files won't open in Firefox 14, but earlier saved ones will open. The only change I made recently to Firefox was to disable Java because hackers had found a way to use it to access PCs.

I assume you are using an add-on to create and decode the MHTML files? You might check with the author of the add-on as to whether it requires Java or a newer version of Firefox in order to work properly.

  • Saving psd file as jpg

    Hello all -
I have recently upgraded from PSE–3 to PSE–9.0 on my Intel MAC running OSX 10.5.8.
With PSE–3, when I wanted to save a psd file as a jpg, I would click File/SaveAs, and in the subsequent window select JPG.  When I did that, the file name at the top of the window changed from xxx.psd to xxx.jpg and the resulting saved file was, in fact, a jpg.
When I attempt the same thing with PSE–9, the file name changes from "xxx.psd" to "xxx copy.psd".  The resulting file is saved as a jpg, but with a ".psd" extension.
I went to PSE–9's 'Saving Files ...' Preferences window. I changed the 'Append File Extension:' option from 'Never' to 'Always' and clicked 'OK'.  When I reopened that window, 'Append File Extension' was still set to 'Never'.  I have been unable to save the 'Always' option.  Thus the renamed files have always been "xxx copy.psd".
Have I been missing somthing?  Is there something else I should do?  Or is it a bug in PSE–9?
    TIA for any thoughts -
    - Ddgt

Yes, it's a bug in the mac version of PSE 9. Just opening the Saving Files preference causes pse to stop appending the file extension. You can either enter it manually, or quit the editor, relaunch it while holding down command+shift+option and keep the keys down till you see a window asking if you want to delete the settings file. You do. Then never go to that particular preference again.

  • Saving PSD files after exporting from Lightroom saves incorrectly

I've only recently moved to Lightroom from using Photoshop/Bridge together, so I'm not 100% sure how saving files exported from Lightroom should go. But here's what I experience:
Base edit of file within Lightroom
In library view, right click on image -> Edit in -> Open as Smart Object in Photoshop
Perform all my necessary edits and such
File -> Save As, and save it to another location as a PSD file (totally different HDD)
    Perform more edits....
Shortcut CTRL+S to save, and it saves it as the TIFF file under the location it was originally in within Lightroom
Eh...? Am I missing something. It should just save as the original PSD I created when I went "Save As". I have seen on a few occasions, immediately after "Save As", the file name resorts back to TIFF and not as PSD.
My settings for External Editing in Lightroom are as follows:
    File Format: TIFF
    Color Space: ProPhoto RGB
    Bit Depth: 16 bits/component
    Resolution: 300
    Compression: None
Does anyone have any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Also, to note, that sometimes I double click on the Smart Object within Photoshop to load Camera Raw and perform some edits, but not often.

Re Camera Raw being used to pass an image to Photoshop
    a) I am assuming this is independent of the Compatibility level in Preferences\File Handling DNG creation.
    b) Does the same apply to other photo editing software made by Adobe like Elements?.
Reply: Yes, the principle is the same. Photoshop Elements cannot read raw data either. That's why it has to be converted before it's opened.
    c) Assume that I have LR 5.7.1 and CS5. Is Camera Raw is still used to pass an image to Photoshop? If so, why is there a need to get LR to behave differently?
Reply: Camera Raw is used IF you choose the option to open anyway. Then Camera Raw will be used to convert the image that's opened in Photoshop. But since it is older than Lightroom some of the new adjustments might not be transferred to Photoshop. That's why there is a need to let the user make the choice.
    d) Sometimes it does seem as if Adobe might be using Camera Raw updates and process version updates to get consumers to change their habits, this includes having to buy subscriptions or having to change workflow to some ideal that somebody at Adobe or working with Adobe might have in mind.
Reply: The fact is that in the past, when a new version of Photoshop is released then all support and updates cease for the previous version. Since the introduction of the creative cloud, at least users of Photoshop CS6  get support for new cameras. They just don't get the new features. Yes, there's motivation to upgrade. Adobe is a business. What do you really expect?
    Re stacks
I find impossible to see collapsed stacks on the film strip. Stacks are only visible on the Library module and using a grid view; I don't say clearly visible because they are only recognisable by the label at the top left corner with the image count; I don't even think it is possible to change the colour of that label or the grey colour surrounding an image. Also I cannot name stacks. If I could name stacks, see them as virtual folders underneath a library folder and make them glaringly visible I would use them extensively.
Reply: The only reason I can think of that you are unable to see collapsed stacks on the filmstrip is if you have the filmstrip reduced in size to the point that Lightroom can't display all the icons. I'm able to see the collapsed stacks in the library grid view and on my filmstrip
Re storing your Raw files and processed files in separate locations
Assuming Raw files are negatives and Photoshop files are transparencies or prints, would you want negatives being handled/read on a regular basis? If anything happens to your negatives, you would never be able to produce another print or another transparency again.
Reply: The raw files or the negatives, as you put it, are never modified by Lightroom. They always remain in their pristine state they were in when they were imported. If I have a backup of that raw file then I can do whatever I want to the one in my working folder. Resetting that raw file so that it looks unaltered is just a click away.
I have worked extensively with databases and database systems, it is a standard feature of database systems to be able to choose where to store different database objects. I don't see why LR cannot do the same, it is a database after all. I do agree with both the OP and photo.
Reply: Well, I won't argue that point. If that's what you really want than lobby for it. It just won't get my vote because I don't see any real advantage.
If you read back through this quoted message you'll find that my replies are included. I don't know how to separate them out so they are highlighted properly. Read through it and think about it. But personally, I don't want to waste anymore time on this discussion because it isn't accomplishing anything in my opinion.

  • Saving PSD Files in Photoshop CS5.5

    Hi,
I am new to photoshop and I am having a problem saving my layers in PSD Photoshop cs5.5.  I created 4 layers and they all look great. the screen shot of my properties panel looks like this:
The problem is that after saving it as a PSD file and during the save process the layers box is checked, it wont open with all layers.  So if I close the original that has all 4 layers and then reoping it after its saved, its not the same.  The picture looks proper and all layers are in the picture, but on the side properties panel it looks like this
Please help, because now I am not able to edit this picture later if I like because I cant select the individual layers.
    Thanks,
    Rylan

Did you drag it into Photoshop on top of an already open canvas to open it?  Try dragging it to the BORDER of Photoshop instead.

  • Saved PSD files show up as small thumbnails oinly in Bridge

Ive been working on some photos in ACR/CS2 and a strange thing happened. After working on raw files I save them in a separate working folder as psd files. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, my PSD files are showing up in Bridge as tiny thumbnails. This just started happening in the middle of working on a folder of raw files. The first few were fine and then the saved files began showing up as thumbnails.
Moving the slider to make them bigger doesnt do anything. I can make all the files smaller by moving the slider to the left, but moving to the right only makes the files thumbnail size. Very weird. This problem seems limited to Bridge. In PS they look fine. Ive even checked their file size and that looks fine. Ive closed and reopened Bridge, but that had no affect.
I cleared ACR preferences and purged the folder; that brought back some files but then others became small. Also when working on new files, the first few were again OK and then again files became thumbnail size in Bridge. I can open the files, save them to another folder and then copy them to the original folder, over writing the old, thumbnail size folder. I suspect all this has to do with cache and some setting, but I can't figure out the random nature of all this.

Actually I found the problem... under Bridge preferences, check to see if the "do not process files larger than ____MB" is less than the PSD file size.... i.e. my psd file was 229.24mb and my limit was set at 200mb... then once you change this go to cache settings and purge, it will reset the thumbnails and clear the small view issue.

  • Imported Photoshop Layers change in Motion after re-saving PSD file

Curious if anyone has seen this issue:
I have a multi-layered Photoshop CS drawing that I import (All Layers) into Motion to animate. No problem.
If I make a change to the original Photoshop PSD file, the Motion layers are updated incorrectly. The layers are swapped and their locations move. The only fix I have is to completely re-import the file and start from scratch.
I've also seen the Motion layers change slightly if I just save the PSD file again without changes. They are minor, but still apparent.
    Anyone, anyone?
    Dual 2GHz G5 : 3GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   FCP5

Lesson learned. Do you know, is the a problem only if PS and Motion are open at the same time?
I like the fact that Motion attempts to update, but the fact it does it wrong is a bummer. I suppose if this only happens when the two programs are open one could simply close motion, change one or two layers in photoshop, and import only those layer into Motion upon re-opening. Not a big deal.
I may try and see what happens... with a small project without a deadline...

  • What is causing a disk error when saving psd files or writing to cache?

The problem only happens when running Photoshop CC (2104) and Bridge (actually these are the only two programs I really use my external drive for) during a save or write operation to an external hard drive.  I can work for hours, with multiple files open, saving, creating, etc. without a problem and then suddenly I'll get a message from Photoshop saying, "Could not save .... because of a disk error." or from Bridge saying, ".. unable to write to cache..".
When I quit and try to troubleshoot the problem, I find that, for some reason, Mavericks has put system files on my external (non boot) drive or, for whatever reason, thinks there is a system file on it.  Consequently, the drive cannot  be ejected (Error message: "... one or more programs may be using it...") and I cannot repair it using Disk Utility (Error message: " ... live file system repair is not supported").  I also cannot write to it (Error message: "... unexpected disk error has occurred (error code: -50)").  The problem persists even after quitting all other programs, which wouldn't surprise me if Mavericks thinks there is a system file on it.
I have force ejected the drive a couple of times but became concerned that I might be compounding the problem. Now I just restart my computer and run Disk Utility Repair Disk.  (Don't know which is worse.)  Disk Utility either doesn't find a problem or, if it finds one, it repairs it.  After that, Photoshop and Bridge work fine for a while.
    System information:
MacBook Pro 13" 2.4GHz with 16GB RAM, 500 GB HD (recently upgraded)
    Apple Cinema Display
    Mavericks (up to date)
    G-Technology G-Drive (Gen 5) 2TB HD connected via Firewire 800 (latest firmware)
Unconfirmed observation: I believe the first few times this problem occurred, Firefox was up an running.  I made a point of quitting all programs except System Monitor when running Photoshop and Bridge and I can't remember having the problem again.  The the last time the issue occurred, today, however, Safari was up and running.
Is this an OS problem, a hardware (disk drive, cable, etc.) problem, a software problem (PS, Bridge) or some combination? I have put this much detail in the post hoping someone can share some insight into the cause.  I will be sending this report to Apple and G-Technology and I will report any resolution, if and, hopefully when, I find one.

The only thing that will cause a disk error is an actual error from the disk.
Photoshop is just telling you what that OS told it about the error.
It sounds like you need to boot off another disk and try to repair your disk.
Also, make sure you have a backup. And check the SMART status to see if it is failing and needs to be replaced.

  • Problem saving PSD file in Illustrator

I have several files that I created in PSCS3. They are all simple, with two or three flat colors, one color per layer, no effects, shadows, etc. My client is having these printed in China using a type of silk screening process on mug-like items. The printer in China has asked me to resend the files in Illustrator. I am not familiar with Illustrator, but do own a copy of CS3, so I opened my PS file, dragged it to the AI icon and saved it as a layered AI file. The problem is that when I print it out on my Epson printer the AI file looks a little more fuzzy around the edges than the PS file. I checked Document Raster Effects setting in AI (a warning said it was at 72 dpi) and changed it to 300 dpi. That helped a little. But, there still is a small difference so I am wondering if there is anything else I can do to make the objects appear as smooth in AI as they are in PS. I am a little out of my depth here so I hope someone can help. Thanks so much!

I received this response from the Illustrator forum:
"Unless you properly vectorize everything, there is no point in just embedding the PSDs in AI. Since you speak of "simple, with two or three flat colors", I'm afraid you started off on the completely wrong foot by doing it in PS in the first place. This screams "it needs to be vector" all over the place, the reason being that for silk screen you create a sieve mask for each color and for maximum sharpness of these masks, vectors work better. It's not an ultimate requirement, though, but based on that info, as a minor you must familiarize yourself with how to create spot color separations using multichannel/duoton/tritone documents in Photoshop. It may still cause fuzzy edges, but at least you should get clean colors. Otherwise you need to learn AI and re-draw all elements there, assigning proper color swatches which then could be used to create proper separations..."
I would appreciate being directed to a good tutorial on how to create the spot color separations in Photoshop spoken of here-is there one anyone recommends? Thanks!

  • Saved psd file as jpg by accident and closed photoshop.

hi, I have saved my logo as a jpg file instead of psd and closed photoshop, now I do not have any layers to edit my project. Please help me if this is possible to fix.

No, you only have what is in the JPEG. This is why you are forced to save a COPY when saving JPEG, so you still get a warning to save when you quit.
