I logged into my root user account to change my short name (away from bobfranklin) but when I disabled my root user and logged back into my normal account, all the stuff from the root user account popped up instead of my work. HOW CA

Startup disaster, Root/user password change, Please help!!

Hi, my ibook g4 was purchased on ebay through a seller with 100% feedback (a school district). It came with Tiger already installed, and I bought the Leopard Retail upgrade disc, installed all that, and did software updates to get it up and running at 10.5.8. It ran perfectly for the first two days.
Then on startup, the blue screen issue which lasted forever. I put in the Update install disc to run disc utility: A-ok. Tried again, and again. Nothing.
Finally, I went to the installer menu, and reset the user/root/admin passwords.
Now, even when I put the install disc in, it doesn't even go to the gray apple. Instead, it just gives that "?" /faces pictures intermittently.
I was wondering if anyone has had any such problem, and found a solution.
I should add that I already attempted "Safe" mode and even "Transfer" mode, with firewire/friend's macbook. All to no avail.
Is there any way to FIND that hard drive in there again?

Indicates that your iBook can't find a System Folder to boot from.

Did you actually boot from the install disc or just insert into the optical drive? In order to run Disk Utility from the install disc...
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*

Only root user can login, Please help

Hi all, Iam new to solaris.
I installed solaris 10 and configured SSH service.
only root can login to console throught GUI let it be JDE or CDE while other users can't.
Other users can only login through SSH or through command line prompt( before the GUI starts).

Well, the GUI read/writes a lot of configuration files and otherfiles in your HOME directory, if it failes doing so the different services which makes the GUI fails to function and it will exit.
The users can probably login through the GUI even if they don't have a proper $HOME if they choose the Option->Session->Failsafe session.

How do i reset admin password. no disc but system automativally logs me in as administrator and can access root user mode

I recenly got this macbook, MA&00LL/A, max OS X, V:10.4.11, 2GHz IntelCore 2 duo, 2GHz, When I power up it automatically logs me on as administrator but prompts for password when I try to access/change certain features. I got the macbook from my cousin who has forgot password and has lost disc. I can access root user mode but as iam unfamiliar with apple I am hesitant to delete anything without making things worse. Is their anyway I can reset this admin password without the disc or simply delete this user and reconfigure system as myself as administrator. step by step instructions would be appreciated at this stage till i familiarize myself more. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If it came down to buying a disc, how much roughly do these cost??? thanks again

If you don't have your install disks you can get the 10.4 gray disks by calling Apple Store Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775 They can send them to you for about $16 per disk plus S & H. Just give them your serial number and they'll know which ones you need.
To find your serial number go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info, the System Profiler will then come up. The Serial Number (System) is down near the bottom of the Hardware Overview list.
If you don't have your install disc handy,then follow these steps
1. Start up in single-user mode (hold Command-S as thecomputer starts up).
2. Type: mount -uw /
3. Press Return.
4. Type this: passwd (user's short name) Replace "(user's shortname)" with the short name of the user account whose password you wish to reset. If you are not sure what the account name is, you can get a list of usernames by typing: ls /Users
5. Press Return.
6. Enter a new user password.
7. Press Return.
8. Type: reboot
9. Press Return.

WHY does "Apple Help" crash - unless I log in as Root User ?

After an archive and reinstall of Leopard following some serious permissions problems with configuration of the original install things are working pretty well again - - EXCEPT, that every time I as the user-administrator try to open "Apple Help" from the finder desktop, the blank app window opens and then crashes like clockwork before any text appears in the window.
If I log out and log in as root user, the Help app runs fine. This would seem to be a permissions issue, but I have just run permissions repair from the install CD on the boot volume and everything seems OK with both it and the file system.
Is there a way to get Help running again from my ordinary user account without another long and drawn out reinstall of the whole OS ?

I realize this question has been answered but I would like to add a little about permissions.
When a person does an Upgrade or Archive and Install saving user settings, the GID (group ID) is set at 501....
This is NOT really correct or the way it should be.
When a person does an Archive and Install without saving user settings or an Erase and Install, or they purchase a new computer with Leopard already on it, then the GID for the user is set at 20......
I have redone most of my installs so I now have the UID at 501 and the GID at 20 just the way it should be when you buy a new Mac.
Apple has come up with somewhat of a terminal fix but they still need to address more of these user permission problems.. Hopefully in the next update....

Admin users appearing as group20(staff) Can't enable root user

I'm trying to create a new default user template for a load of machines at work. According to everything I've found online in order to do this I need to log in as the root superuser but when I attempt to do so the terminal gives me a 'sorry' response to my admin account password. Terminal command
id
shows my account as
GID=20(staff)
even though Terminal command
dscl . read /groups/admin GroupMembership
lists users root and ict (my admin account)
I've tried creating a new local admin account and that also appears as group20.
Can someone perhaps steer me in the right direction?

It's normal for an admin user to be given the primary group ID = staff (GID 20), and also to be a member of a number of additional groups, including the admin group (80).
Running the id command when logged into a newly-created admin account t1, I got:

Single user mode, Lost Admin Account, and Disk Permissions

Okay, so I have quite a few issues here. I will start from the beginning.
About a week ago, I tried to install some updates and I could not get the Admin account to work. I went to the users profile and noticed my Admin account was not there. Did a quick search and found Apple's outline of how to fix this via the Operational DVD and the root user. Tried this and it would never work, because as soon as I restarted the computer or changed screens it switched back to a standard account.
Next up, I went into the terminal to check the Admin User group. As it turns out it is not there. So I find a discussion on there that outlines how to rebuild this in single user mode and the Unix prompt. So, I print it off and try to restart in single user mode. After trying two different keyboards and a sum total of 8 to 10 times, I can't restart in single user mode to get to the Unix prompt.
One last thing, last night I went into the Disk Utility on the start-up DVD. I wanted to check the Repair Permission log and I got the following:
ACL found but not expected on "private/var/root/Library/Preferences"
ACL found but not expected on "private/var/root/Library/"
ACL found but not expected on "Network"

first, the ACL messages can be ignored. if you can't get to single user mode you can't fix your admin group. the only reasons that I know why you wouldn't be able to do that is
1. a defective keyboard
2. you have a firmware password set. have you? you'd have to turn it off before you can get to single user mode.
lastly when you restart in single user mode make sure you press command+s right after you hear the chime. do not press it too early or too late. lastly, I'm not sure which instructions you've found to fix the admin group but I have them in this thread

There is a non-root user account

I got the warning "there is a non-root user account with the UID 0 in your system" on installing some software and on running in the terminal... dscl . -list /Users UniqueID , there are indeed 2 users with UID 0, root and me who is admin too. Also cannot log in to keychain - related?

Can't log in as root user

Somehow my computer lost the ability to login as a root user. I noticed the problem when I tried to install a software update. When it prompted me for administrator username and password it usually has my username stored, it didn't. I typed my username and password but it didn't take. I opened Netinfo Manager to enable root user, but after I authenticate, the enable root user is dimmed.
I tried logging out of user but there is not "other" option to login as root user. I can't create a new user in accounts because it's locked and to unlock it I need the correct administrator username.
I've also tried boot from CD to reset password. When I select my boot drive it gives me no options.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is only one root user, so saying "a root user" doesn't make sense. What you mean is an admin user, and it looks like your account has somehow manage to lose its admin privileges.
Follow the instructions in I lost my admin user and you should get them back.
Note that in this User Tip, 'youruser' is a placeholder. You are supposed to substitute the short name of your account wherever it appears.

Can't enable root user?

I am following the instructions on the Apple website to enable the root user, and it says that after you enter your admin password on the Directory Utility window, to simply pick 'Enable Root User' from the 'Edit' menu. I don't see any menu that says 'edit', or anything that says, 'enable root user.' Help?

I think you mean single user mode, which is done by booting while holding down "comman + S" keys.
Single user mode, while it enables you with root privileges is not the same as working as root from a normal bootup sequence. SU mode only loads a very minimal system, with most of the kernel extensions and system daemons dis-abled. It also mounts your disk in read-only mode. In order to do anything other than rudimentary trouble shooting in SU mode (like running fsck), you are going to have to know a fair bit of UNIX command line knowledge to start up or enable things you may want or need (like write capability to disc contents, or networking).
The keyboard is limited to ANSI terminal settings, so no foreign language support.
So, if you are doing something that actually requires a root terminal session (installing something from source code, for example), just login normally, start Terminal, and enter "sudo su -". Enter your admin password and you will be in a root terminal session, but with a full, normally booted system and all its features.

yes, it was nailed for gutbunny, but this did not nail it for me. situation: new 32 GB USB flash drive that was allowed to go to sleep with mac book pro 15" 2.33 using mac os 10.4.11. it woke up with no permissions to write to owner or admin user or root. did the following:

Hello all,
I am having a problem to login as root user this is what i got:

Or I try

So my question is how can I recover the root user password?

Another method would be to use the original o/s installation CD/DVD and boot from it. It should have an "emergency boot/recovery" option.This boots the o/s from the CD/DVD and detects and mounts the local hard drives. If the installation media does not support such a boot option, download an Ubuntu installation (aka Live) CD and use this to boot the server - and then manually mount the root partition.
Edit the +/etc/shadow+ file on the local drive and remove the root password string from the file. Save and exit. Reboot from the harddrive - logon without having to supply a root password.
If you cannot follows these simple instructions, then you should not be dealing with o/s admin without undergoing some formal training first.

Can I enable the root user account from the log in screen when I am locked out of the machine?

I am working on my friends mac to get it ready to sell. I went into the advanced options of the user and changed the name of the account. That's all I changed. I did read the warning that said if anything was changed it could cause damage, that's why I only changed the name of the user account. I didn't want to mess with anything else. Well, needless to say, I am locked out of the machine. Apparently the root user, system administrator, account was not enabled and I am stuck at the screen that I can get to with my installation disc. So how can I enable the root user account and get back onto the machine from the screen I am at? Can I enable the root user from terminal? I spent a good 8 hours yesterday researching this topic and have come up empty. Changing passwords from commands in terminal is not the problem. I am given just one account to choose from to log on and it's not accepting the password because of the changes I made in the advanced options menu.

[SOLVED] Xorg not starting on non-root user [My First Linux]

Hello, I recently turned back to linux after digging up my old ASUS EEE 900a, which I messed up with partitioning fun after trying to cram Windows XP on it and etc. Anyways, I managed to fix it, and after Ubuntu being too big, I was turned on to Arch as a good distro, and I've been having a very good time setting everything up so far.
Anyways: My issue arises after needing to use a different user in order to use Chrome. I created a new account and tried to run startx like I usually do. It spat out the usual few lines, but failed and gave me this log:

I've tried looking for this problem elsewhere as it feels like such a newbie problem to have, but I have had difficulty. There are two errors in this log, I think, but they didn't mean much to me... Any help for a linux newbie? Thanks!
EDIT: Solved; as pointed out below, I needed a window manager for a non-root user to use.

Well, soon you'll have to try out one of the more minimal options, in which you don't use any desktop environment but instead you install your own window manager (openbox, dwm, i3, etc) and use small, dedicated programs. Given your extreme space restrictions, I recommend going that route! But, take your time because that requires a bit of learning: you need to figure out which parts of a desktop environment you really need, then you need to learn the proper names for them so that you can search for information, then you need to start fiddling with configurations, etc. Better first to make sure your first Arch Linux installation is up and running properly and to learn a bit about the system before entering that downward spiral.

My root user ate my admin. HELP!
