  • My safari has random pop ups and opens new ad tabs

    Hi there!
Ever since a few days I have some issues with random advertisements, pop-ups and my safari even opens up new tabs, when I open up another tab. It's really annoying and I read that it could be a virus that's constantly changing, so 'old' solutions might not be applicable anymore, so that is why I am opening a new discussion. Also, I read about firstly making a back-up, does this need to be done with an external hard drive?
    Thanks so much in advance!
These are print screens of the pop ups

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed the "VSearch" trojan. Remove it as follows.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. These instructions are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data before proceeding.
    Step 1
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot," "Trovi," or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
Reset the home page and default search engine in all the browsers, if it was changed.
    Step 2
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "com.vsearch.agent.plist" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
    /Library/Application Support/VSearch
    /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
The problem may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the Internet criminal behind VSearch has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • When I go to my safari settings I cannot turn off my "Block Pop-ups for a site.  It is stuck in the on position.

I have certain websites that use popups that I need to be able to use.  When I go to Safari settings I cannot turn of the "block pop ups" setting.  It is grayed out and only in the on postion.

You will need to have the hold switch replaced.

I can't get rid of the annoying and time wasting pop ups and ad pages that jump in front of the page I click on. I have blocked popups in Chrome and Safari as well as system preferences

You most likely installed adware along with something else you recently installed.
You can either follow Apple's manual instructions for removing it, or the free automated tool, AdwareMedic.

  • Why does my Safari browser keep having pop-ups and new windows open without permission?

Whenever I click on a button to go to another page or something, a new tab with a new website opens up. When I search on Google, there are all kinds of ads and pop-ups on there. I really know nothing about Internet security, so I do not know what is wrong.

  • Removing pop ups and green underlined words from safari?

Unwanted pop ups on current window and new windows keep coming up and many words are underlined in green (as hyperlinks) and I don't know how to fix it!

You installed the "DownLite" trojan, perhaps under a different name. Remove it as follows.

  • FF 18.0.1 Hotmail Contacts and Cookies: Contacts don't load with "Ask Every Time" and "Allow Cookie". Loads fine with "Keep until they expire."

Everything was working fine under Win8Pro Release Preview and FF (17?)...
    Did full Win7Pro SP1 x64 install.
Installed FF 18.0.1, no add-ons; all defaults except turned on "do not track" and changed cookie handling as described:
Logging in to my Hotmail/Outlook.com account (MS upgraded me to Outlook.com in the middle of my troubleshooting) I can access my Hotmail People (Contacts) without difficulty.
I change FF Options -> Privacy -> "Keep cookies until" from "they expire" to "ask every time."
When I go to "Hotmail People", I click on "Allow" for every instance I'm asked to set or modify a cookie.
The content of the "People" page (the contacts themselves) never loads. I just get the "please wait" circling-dots.
I return to the Hotmail "Mail" page (which still works fine, except when addressing a message).
I change FF Options -> Privacy -> "Keep cookies until" from "ask every time" to "they expire."
When I go (back) to Hotmail People, the contacts load fine.
Shouldn't the two scenarios be the same? I prefer to manually handle cookie handling, so this feature is important to me.
    Thanks!
PS: With the exception of addressing in Mail; Mail, Calendar and SkyDrive all seem to work fine regardless of which cookie setting is used.

Additional information: I had SSL-only enabled in Hotmail, and SSL-only is required by Outlook.com.
I've done four captures using Fiddler v2.4.2.6.
Each capture starts at the Outlook.com Inbox, then the switch to the "People" page.
    1) Captured with cookies set "Until They Expire" (green)
    2) Captured with cookies set "Ask Me Every Time" and "Allow" (red)
    3) Same as (1)
    4) Same as (2)
I don't know Fiddler or HTML well enough to troubleshoot on my own.
If someone would like this file for troubleshooting, please let me know.
    Thanks.

  • Odd pop-ups and webpages that don't load?

I know that Mac computers cannot get a virus; however, I have been receiving very odd messages lately. I sometimes get random pop-ups that say, "Your Windows computer may be infected! Call now at this number!" I'm not sure if it's just an ad or some sort of spam, but it makes me uncomfortable because I tend to get the messages often. I unfortunately don't have an image of the pop-ups, though.
Another problem is the fact that I can't access ONE particular website. My wireless is fine, it works perfectly with other webpages, but that one website refuses to load. The website is 'Animal Jam,' and I've tried everything to allow the website to load for my daughter, but it just doesn't seem to work properly. The address bar just loads for a long period of time until Chrome says 'This website is not available.' Animal Jam has provided tips for technical problems (all of which I have tried): clearing the cookies, updating Adobe Flash Player, restarting my computer, etc., but nothing seems to work at all.
I've also tried testing it with different browsers, and they all yielded the same result. I know that the website is not tempolarily disabled, because it seems to be working for many of my daughter's friends who also play the game. This site also provides that the site is 'up' and running: http://www.isitdownrightnow.com/animaljam.com.html
    Some help would be appreciated!

Most likely, you have a web plugin that depends on the Java runtime distributed by Apple, such as the Facebook video calling plugin or the "NexDef" plugin for watching baseball streams. If you no longer need the plugin, remove it, including its automatic update mechanism (if any) according to the developer's instructions. Otherwise, install Java.

  • Why don't the changes to my playlists and new songs (except the ones I buy from the iTunes store that automatically download onto my iPod) always sync to my iPod Touch 4th Generation?

I haven't yet tried it in iTunes 10.5.3 (I'm downloading it right now), but I don't expect that Apple has fixed the problem, if there is one. I have it set to automatically sync my music and sometimes it will work, usually when I make large changes. To overcome this, I have to unselect the (a?) playlist from the music sync for my iPod, sync it, reselect the playlist, and sync it again. It's very annoying to me. This problem exists whether I sync it with a cord or wirelessly. I have it set to backup on my computer (last generation MacBook (2010), base model, OS X 10.7.2).

  • I am totally frustrated with Firefox and would like to know how to uninstall it. I am getting obscene pop-ups, and when I ask for specific information, other unrelated information pops us. I have had this for one day and don't like it.

Additionally, I cannot find my address book listed on any toolbar. I also put in the address for a site that I have previously gone to and get a page that says that the address can't be found. The address is that of a library. I am not pleased.
I currently have a pop-up from Wal-Mart that I cannot exit. It will NOT disappear no matter what I click. I will have to close down the computer totally to get rid of it.
    Thanks.

Do a malware check with a few malware scan programs.<br />
You need to use all programs because each detects different malware.<br />
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of the database before doing a scan.

  • I don't like the constant pop ups of Conduit Engine or various Tool Bars which loaded themselves on my computer.

Is there a way to remove items from the list without disabling the pop-up. A "Never Show this Option Again" button or and edit option to delete them would be great.

  • I don't want outlook to pop up and automatically send outgoing messages. I wan't my webmail to do that. thanks

When i go on a website that requires response to their email, my outlook pops up with the info. it's not sending so I'd like for my att webmail to pop up instead. Linda

Thank you for your reply, Mike Johnson12!
Holding down option + apple made iTunes not to know where the files it should sync the iPod with, causing it to give up syncing. Then on the iPod Summary pane, I could uncheck
the "Open iTunes when this iPod is connected" box.
After that, iTunes no longer starts up when I plugin
    this iPod.
I still wonder what software component in the MacOS X
is monitoring the USB port and choose a specific application
to start up depending on the type of the USB device.
But I consider this quition answered.

When I try to sync changes from my playlist on the computer to my iphone the sync process gets as far as step 7, applying changes, then freezes up and the changes are not getting to my iphnoe.  How do I fix this issue?

Are all these songs associated with the same Apple ID or were some purchased on another account?
Are they tagged properly? In the library does it break an album out into several different albums with a few tracks each?
Check your sync settings for each device. Do you accidentally have only certain songs/albums syncing?
