John has suggested rebuilding the Mail mailboxes. Once Mail is open, go to: Mailbox on the menu bar and select Rebuild.
As for Safari, is it opening and working if you open it before Mail and what if any Extensions are you using?
OK ... so I just restarted and opened Safari first ... no spinning ball. And I opened mail after hitting the rebuild, well, I'm missing messages from Dec. 24 - now, but it opened right away. Most messages are FB feeds, so it's not like I've lost anything important. So, initial thoughts ... John was a tremendous help, BUT, we shall see what happens when I try to open mail again ... and I'll try it first with the next restart or wake up ... so appreiciate the walk-thru on all of this!

    Acrobat Pro XI 11.0.5
Running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit Intel Core 2.70 GHZ 16GB RAM laptop
Problem: Program often freezes when it starts, for up to one minute.  Almost every time.
Since purchasing Acrobat Pro XI we can't read any company documents reliably from this computer, where before (with the free version) we could.  Have searched for my problem but did not find anything pertaining to my version.  Based on reports of similar freezing problems with prior versions using "enhanced security",  I have tried changing my security settings.  Usually this has no effect.  Sometimes the program functions once or twice, or at least I think it does, because always the issue returns with a vengeance. Does Acrobat attempt some network communication in the background when it opens documents?  If that's what's happening can I stop it from all such secret communications?

  • Why does Safari freeze when the cursor hovers across "Bookmarks"?

    Safari v 4.1
    Hi,
When I move the cursor over "Bookmarks" in the menu at the very top of the window, Safari freezes for about 5 minutes. It can also freeze when the cursor is simply passing under the "Bookmarks". When I'm moving the cursor horizontally across the entire screen, I have to keep the cursor well below the top menu bar to avoid freezing Safari. Otherwise Safari is working OK. I often Force Quit" Safari when this happens, but if I wait, it will unfreeze.
This is all about hovering, not clicking.
Any suggestions as to why this is happening and how to fix it.
    Thanks, Rafael

    Hi Carolyn.
First, about resetting. I've never done it before, and I recall hearing—but have no direct experience—that it practically wipes the slate clean. I've built a very sophisticated Bookmarks Bar and Bookmarks Menu, and because I'm a researcher, I never erase history. When I started using Safari a long time ago, I was told by Apple to regularly erase history. Then a couple of years ago I was told by someone I trust that it's OK to keep it.
I regularly empty Cache and remove cookies.
Are these the top 5 buttons?:
    1 Clear history
    2 Reset Top Sites
3 Remove all webpage preview images
    4 Empty the cache
    5 Clear the Downloads window
I got this list from Safari Help>Resetting Safari. I'm using Safari 4.1, but I noticed that this help page referred to Safari 5 in the 'Reset Top Sites' explanation: "Reset Top Sites: … Top Sites page reverts to showing the webpage previews displayed when you first installed Safari 5."
    As for the rest:
2 Reset Top Sites—I’ve never made use of this
3 Remove all webpage preview images—not familiar or I don’t recognize what it is.
4 Empty the cache—Fine with that
5 Clear the Downloads—window Fine with that
I’m letting you know about these details before I proceed with your instructions.
    Thanks for responding,
    Rafael
PS Since I'm asking about Bookmarks here, I've been meaning to find out something about my Safari Bookmarks.html that is exported, then backed up to one of my external HDs. If Safari or my computer crashes, and I re-install Safari, then import those bookmarks, are they re-created to look just as they do now in 'Show All Bookmarks'?
I have some old bookmarks (or 'Favorites' I think they were called) that, when imported (in an html format?), appeared as a long list, rather than as a neatly tiered record of folders and files.

  • Safari freezes when attempting to go back using the wipe function of the magic mouse.

Whenever I wipe a little bit to the side on my magic mous the opened tab starts freezing when attempting to go back.
Restart didn't help and there was no system error Message.
    Thank you for supporting!
By the way, I'm running Maverick already.

From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
    and confirm. Test.

  • Safari freezes when trying to open files.

I am trying to open files on my computer through Safari. I am trying to open a file through Avery.com, but it's not Avery that is the problem, I don't believe. All I have to do is open Safari, click on File>Open File, and the same thing happens every time: it freezes. I've never had a problem with it before until now and I am extremely frustrated.
The "Open File" window pops open and all the iMovies start to try to load up. Well, I don't want to open iMovies, I want to open a file that is on my desktop. But I can't click on "desktop;" I can't click on anything. The little rainbow-colored icon starts spinning and Safari freezes up. I thought maybe the computer was just trying to load a bunch of videos, so I went away for a while (nearly an hour), but when I came back, that stupid rainbow-colored disc was still spinning away and I had to force a "quit."
I have restarted the computer, I have updated the computer, I have checked the Internet Plug-ins (of which I have none. Is this because I emptied the cache and deleted all history? I thought maybe that would help safari, but it didn't), and now I have no idea what to do.
Thanks for any and all help.

    Hi,
    Check Safari/Preferences - Extensions.
And empty the Safari cache either from the menu bar, Safari/Empty Cache or Command + Option + E on your keyboard.
    And try restarting your Mac.

  • Safari freeze when bookmarking, OSX 10.9.4

    Hi,
I have a huge problem at the moment as Safari started to freeze every time i bookmark anything. I did find suggestions in the following thread: Re: In the 10.9.4 Safari update is there a bug in Safari?
...I tried to follow the suggestions in the thread above but got stucked. I did comment in that thread but decided to create a new thread. The following comments is also present in that previous thread. I have been forced to install Firefox as a temporary solution but want to use Safari.

I cannot save bookmarks in my main account but it is possible as a guest. I also tested step1 and step 2 but when i started my iMac27 in recovery mode there was no "Utility" selection.
I REALLY need some help to solve this problem.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy it to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    ~/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist
    Quit Safari.
    Select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the Finder menu bar. Paste into the text box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
A folder window should open with a file named "Bookmarks.plist" selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the folder open.
Relaunch Safari. It will open with the default set of bookmarks. Delete them all. Select
              File ▹ Import Bookmarks
from the Safari menu bar. Import from the bookmarks file you moved to the Desktop. Arrange the bookmarks as you wish.
If Safari now performs normally, you can delete the old bookmarks file. Otherwise, quit Safari again and put back the file you moved, replacing the newer one with the same name. Close the Finder window and post again.

  • Safari freezes when rotated

If I'm in portrait mode in Safari and I rotate my iphone 4 to landscape mode, Safari will occasionally freeze (about one time out of 5). To restore it, I have to quit Safari, then tap the icon to rerun it. Usually it won't start back up on the first retry - It boots to the Safari screen, but it's blank and is frozen. I knock it down and try again and usually on the second or third try it runs OK again
This freeze occurs intermittently and I can't recreate it. It started a few weeks ago. I thought that installation of 4.3 would help, but it's still there.
I'm assuming that since it has persisted through a firmware change (upgrade to 4.3), it's not going to be helped by a restore, but perhaps I'm wrong. If Safari wasn't a built in program, I'd uninstall and reinstall a fresh copy - any way to do that? Since it glitches when rotated, I also wonder if it's somehow hardware related to that rotation sensor.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. - Frank

I did take it into the Genius bar. They checked it and said they could see numerous Safari freezes - I guess they have a way to read activity and errors. They had no answers for why it would freeze, but gave me a new (refurbished, I'm sure) phone.
So I'll restore and hope the problem doesn't come back in through the software restore.......

  • Safari freezes when filling out on line forms

Has this ever happened to anyone else? Can anyone give alittle suggestion, or advice? Every time I start to type in any field on an online form, safari freezes. I then have to do a force quit, (it always says "application not responding") and restart safari. For instance, I am filling this question out on my iBook, because my desktop would just freeze up, when I start typing.
    dual 800MHz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi Charlotte,
One quick test you can do to help narrow down things is to use Safari in another user account.
This will help us to know whether your problem is local to your account or system wide. If you don't have another account you can use System Preferences -> Accounts -> [+] to create a test one (and [-] to remove it if needed)
Let us know how things work there (or not).

  • My laptop keeps freezing when i start it up

I posted this on my phone, by the way, since I couldn't even open up Google Chrome without my laptop freezing.

For some apparent reason, my laptop keeps freezing right when I start it up. When I type in my password and my desktop screen comes up, I try to go to control panel to uninstall an adobe software I had downloaded but caused my laptop to lag (I downloaded it from the adobe website, itself). But right when the control panel windows comes up, and I try to move my mouse around a bit (I use an external mouse thing), my laptop freezes right there. I tried to go to McAfee to scan for viruses just in case but it froze when the windows came up as well. I tried doing the ctrl + shift + esc thing and I don't think anything's going wrong but when the window comes up and I move the mouse around a bit, my laptop freezes. Nothing's overheating and dusty or anything. And no matter how many times I tried to force shut my laptop down by holding the power button until it turns off, it still freezes every time. Someone please help me troubleshoot this.

  • Safari freezes when I click the Share button or when I try to right-click on the URL to copy/paste

The Address bar and Share functions in Safari cause it to crash/freeze when I try to share or copy/paste the URL.  Any ideas/solutions?

Might be an incompatible Safari extension or plug-in causing the freeze ...
Try troubleshooting extensions and third party plug-ins.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that off if there are any installed. Quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, turn extensions back on then uninstall one a time to test.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow all other plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.

  • Safari freezes when I try to delete a particular bookmark

I have a an unknow bookmark and every time I try to delete it, Safari freezes and I have to force quit. Any solution?

HI Mike and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
    Try maintenance.
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
from the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
There are no Mac viruses in the wild and I doubt it's malware. Try emptying the cache and reset Safari and see if that helps. Often times, just restarting your Mac can help.
What to do if Safari Unexpectedly Quits

  • IPhone 4S Safari freezes when switching tabs

    Hi.
Mobile Safari in my iPhone 4S freezes when switching tabs.  This does not happen every time Safari is running, but it happened one too many already.  Safari freezes even if I only have one tab and wanted to create a new one.  The app would usually freeze while doing the switch, tho it also froze just before the tabs switch.  Has anyone experienced the same?  Please help.  Thank you.

User troubleshooting after a reset is a restore. First from a backup and if that doesn't help, then as a new device. Remember a restore will delete data from the phone. Make sure you have everything backed up and synced to the computer before attempting the restore. If that does not help, make an appointment with the Apple Genius Bar to check for hardware faults.

  • Safari freezes when trying to open Facebook

Has any else had this problem? It also freezes when I try to login to retrieve my e-mails on comcast.net. Safari is version 6.0.5

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.
