my Safari often locks up can i do anything to stop it happening, by which i mean there is probably a procedure i can do to find out why it locks up, like looking in a log file or similar, no doubt you guys know exactly what to do if it happens to you.
i really did think that this "locking up" was a thing of the past since i moved from Windows !, Blue screen of death etc. , mind you Win7 wasnt ever as bad as Win XP !
I saw in another post that there is/are a couple of files i can delete, is this normal ?, when i asked about that, a kind chap (~Bee) suggested i started a post of my own, so here i am, thanks.

Hi,
Follow the instructions I posted previously for troubleshooting third party plugins. Plugins are responsible for 1/3 of the problems with Safari.
For Extensions.. there's another way to check besides the menu bar.
Open a Finder window. Select your Home folder in the Sidebar on the left. Now open the Library folder then the Safari folder then the Extensions folder.
If you see any Extensions there, drag them to the Desktop. Restart Safari. If it doesn't freeze then move one Extension at a time back to the Extensions folder, try Safari. Process of elimination.
Try Safari in another user account. If it freezes there, then log back into your admin account. Launch Disk Utility. Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left then select the FirstAid tab. Click: Verify Disk (not Verify Disk Permissions). If the startup disk needs repairing, follow the instructions here for Using Disk Utility to Verify or Repair Disks

Hi Carolyn, i do appreciate the advice you are giving, but freezing has only happened a couple of times and i am sure youre advice is for folk in a far deeper mess than i, but it is definitely worth my while bookmarking this thread for when things do get bad.
Furthermore i dont have an Extensions folder at all AND i dont believe i have any 3rd Plug installed either.
thanks for all you help both Carolyn and ~Bee

Click on it, choose Get Info from the File menu, and check the format.
If it's formatted as NTFS, reformat it as MS-DOS, exFAT, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as desired, or install software such as Paragon NTFS on the computer.
If it's formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, use the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it; this may also happen for a flash drive which is about to fail.
If it's formatted as Mac OS Extended, click Authenticate and provide your administrator password, or change the permissions on that specific folder in its Get Info window.

  • Safari often locks up when trying to load from a certain site

Certain pages in my county government website cause safari to lock up. I pretty much have this problem only on the county website and only on certain pages. Happens regardless of pop-up blocker status or cookie acceptance. Any suggestions?

Ok.... in that case, boot from your install disc. Run Disk Utility in case there are errors on the startup disk that need repairing.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
(In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first from the installer menu)
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*

  • Firefox "stops responding" quite often so I can't do anything for about 10 seconds, then I can resume.

It seems Firefox just gets "hung-up" often so I can't click on anything, and/or any action takes a long time. Then it will work fine for a few minutes, then stop responding again. I have to close it and start it again quite often, but that never fixes the problem. Thanks.

Hi.....i cleared my ipod touch and it was locked. It,s tellin me to plug into iTunes  but it turns back off as fast as i turn it on....please help to restore my ipod touch? thank you.

  • In Yahoo email, I continually get "non-responsive script" and my system hangs so I can't do anything. Doesn't happen in IE.

This is an intermittent problem that seems to become worse as I continue a session in Yahoo email. I suddenly can't scroll, continue typing an email, or even switch to another site. A message window pops up that says a non-responsive script is running in the background and lists one of at least two different Yahoo mail client addresses at the bottom of the message. Sometimes responding to the message results in nothing but subsequent messages saying the same thing. The only thing I can do is close Firefox and open IE to continue with my emails. I don't remember the specific URLs.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • Permanent pop up, can't do anything in Safari

    Hey guys,
I've had a quick look over the board to see if I could find an answer, but had no luck.
    Here's my problem.
I was using Safari this morning and every so often I get a pop up, but it's no big deal. Though after a while, a window popped up with a dialog box, where it prompted me to click leave page etc. Though what ever I clicked it just kept on re loading, becoming an endless cycle.
I quit Safari and re opened, but it was still there, probably didn't help that I have the option to keep the same pages open when I re open Safari. As I can't access anything due to the pop up, I don't have anyway to turn this off in the preferences.
I reinstalled the OS, but no luck and tried Time Machine, but no luck.
Is there an easy solution to reinstall or wipe Safari without going in to the application?
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Cheers

Launch Safari with the Shift key held down and then turn it off. If that doesn't work, disconnect your computer from the Internet for long enough to turn the option off.

  • HT1338 My Macbook Pro is running slowly and Safari keeps locking up. What can I do to fix it?

My Macbook Pro has been running slowly for several weeks. Safari keeps locking up and I have to Force Quit.  It is very frustrating because it has always worked so well. My software is all up to date and I'm not using anything big - normally just Safari, Word, Excel or Powerpoint. Is there something I can do to clean it up or fix it?
    Thanks!

It would of had to be a very powerful magnet to damage, actually erase, the hard drive. That is the only thing that would cause it from starting up, a magnet powerful enough to erase part of the data on the drive. Hard drives are also shielded to some degree to prevent this from happening. If this particular mac was running lion or mountain lion try booting to the Recovery HD, hold down the command+r keys at startup. If that doesn't work try command+option+r key and hold those down until you see a globe on the screen. That will boot the system from over the internet from the Apple servers using the online recovery system. That is if the system can use the online recovery system. Only systems newer then late 2011 model can use it. From either type of boot try to repair the drive using disk utility. If that fails then you will need to reinstall OS X on the system.
I doubt the magnet cause any physical damage to the hardware in the system. So once you repair the drive or reinstall the OS the system should start working again.

I have a work ipad but they have removed safari and locked it down so i cant put apps from my itunes account onto it. Any ideas on what i can do

Besides the ethical and professional issues involved, the iPad appears to be linked to a different iTunes account than your personal one. Applications are tied to the account, not the device - so if you were able to use your personal account to install the apps in question, you'd be wiping out all the ones your employer put on.
If you feel these apps are necessary for your work, then talk to your supervisor/tech department about them purchasing additional copies for use on the iPad.

  • My safari is locked up by a popup that I can't make go away. Any ideas?

I'm using OSX 10.6.8 and my safari is locked up by a pop-up that disables all the commands. The screen says its a system security alert.

    Lots of good information there.

  • Safari is locking up and giving security warning

    Hi,
On my macbook pro Late 2011, OS X 10.9.5, Safari is locking up and giving a pop-up message:
    " Safari - Alert
Suspicious Activity Might Have been Detected.
    Major Security Issue
To fix it please call Support for Apple
    +1 800-680-4131 (Toll Free) immediately!"
What is this and how do I get rid of it.

You may have installed the "Downlite" or "VSearch" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Besides the files listed in the support article, you may also need to remove this item in the same way:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
The problem may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This malware is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates
    if it's not already checked.

  • Safari often freezes up my whole computer.

Safari often freezes up my whole computer. The cursor can move around some on the desktop, but then it quickly jumps back to the last safari page. Nothing seems to help. I have to shut down the computer from the power button. Argh!

Go step by step and test.
    1. Empty Caches
        Safari > Preference > Advanced
Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
Develop menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.
Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown.
    2. Delete Cookies
Safari > Preferences > Privacy > Cookies and other website data:
        Click “Remove All Website Data”.
    3. Safari > Preferences > Extensions
Turn off Extensions if any and launch Safari again to test.
Turn on those one by one and test.

  • I have the original iPad. It is crashing often. What can I do? It is updated as far as possible.

My original iPad, updated to the max, is crashing often. What can I do?

If the crashing is restricted to Safari then you are probably just encountering bugs in Safari. Naturally, if you regularlly visit sites which expose these bugs you will have a lot of crashes. Perhaps, if you regularly terminate Safari and restart it, this will minimize the inconvenient crashes. Minimizing the number of open Tabs can also help. Periodically clearing Cookies and History in Settings > Safari might also help.
You could try using one of the other iPad browsers out there to see if it gives you better stability.

  • My Mac locks up - can't understand why

Been having issues with my home Mac as of late (dual 2.3Ghz processor, pre-Intel age, running OS 10.4.11). I had been having some instances lately where it started "locking up," and the fan would slowly start to spin until it got really loud. The first time this occurred, I was watching YouTube in both Safari and Firefox simultaneously. So I had to hard restart my Mac over and over again, because every time it came back on, within 10 minutes it'd lock up again (loud fan too). This all happened around the same time that some of my firewire drives started having problems mounting. This prompted me to test the external drives on another Mac. Initial diagnosis: my firewire bus was busted (probably induced by a power surge), because the drives were mounting perfectly on other Macs. So I purchased a firewire card.
As the firewire card was in transit, the freezing continued... so I freaked out, and ran Norton Antivirus. But it came back clean. So then I figured... well, let me repair permissions on the system drive. This apparently cleared some "Shockwave player" conflicts that had popped up. And aha!!... the freezing went away for a few weeks... until two nights ago. I had purchased extra RAM alongside the firewire card, and felt confident running Safari alongside Skype, and iTunes... bad idea. Freezing came back, and brought his buddy Loud Fan along with him. Even when I'd run Quicktime, Compressor, etc. Nothing but freeze within 10-20 minutes.
So... here's what I did to troubleshoot the problem:
    - Installed OS on the second internal drive, so I could rebuild the main system drive using Disk Warrior (v. 4.2)
    - 33% of the system drives' directories were out of order, so I rebuilt the system drive.
    - Rebooted to the main system drive and rebuilt the spare drive, same result (clean directory structure).
    - Repaired permissions (using Disk Utility) on both drives.
    - Even used Cocktail to repair permissions.
The freezing 'seemed' to go away, but last night I was transferring something large (over 1 GB) to a friend via YOUSENDIT.COM (in Safari). Woke up this morning to another loud fan and locked computer. Short of performing a clean reinstall of the OS (was thinking of maybe doing Leopard, since I'm still running Tiger), I feel like I've done all I can.
Any thoughts... ideas? This feels like a conflict is being created when I run certain programs. But maybe it's a hardware malfunction of some sort. I'm clueless at this point.
    Please help. Thanks.

    Hi BDAqua,
I just followed your instructions to run Applejack, because I have been having problems similar (virtually identical) to what the original poster is experiencing. I attempted to run 'applejack AUTO' three times, and each time the computer shuts down after completing Repair Permissions. It happens very fast at the end, but one time I could make out the last line that read (I believe) 'CPU Halted'.
The computer boots up normally. Most of the time, the total freeze comes at a time when Firefox 3.0.4 is running, but one freeze came when only Cocktail was running and the screen saver kicked in.
I'm very meticulous about my daily routine maintenance, including running Cocktail daily before shutting the machine down every day, I've run DiskWarrior recently (as late as yesterday).
The (flashed) video card has been running fine for a year; the freezing started recently, at about the same time as the last QuickTime update from Apple.
What would be your next suggestion?
    Thanks in advance.
Dual bootable, DP MDD 1.25GHz G4 (2004), maxed out at 2GB of RAM, both Spotlight and Dashboard disabled, Photoshop primary scratch disk on dedicated 160GB internal drive, at least 100GB available on each of the four internal drives, up to 300GB on some. Boot drive only 41% full. Counting external FW drives just over 1TB of drive space available. "Mutant" (flashed) nVidia GeForce 7800 GS 425MHz 256 MB graphics display card. Processor napping enabled through CHUD 3.5.2. Tiger 10.4.11
