My safari opens new unwanted tabs

my safari opens new unwanted tabs how can I prevent it?

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed one of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
Malware is also found on websites that traffic in pirated content such as video. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates
if it's not already checked.

Can not open new blank tab window from file, new tab.In Tools/Options/Tabs I have ticked open new window in new tab?

The Ask Toolbar is probably causing that in the Firefox 3.6.13 version. Disable that extension or un-install it.

Safari opens new windows 1/3 the size of the original window. How do I make it open fullscreen?

    HI,
Drag the bottom right corner out as far as it will go. Relaunch Safari. It should remember window position.

  • HT4550 safari opens with 5 tabs and the freezes

safari opens with 5 tabs and the freezes

I have been experiencing the exact same issue as eddiethered for the past 2 weeks, I'm having 4 old browser tabs open everytime I launch Safari.  This is not an issue of a settings configuration, it is an issue of a bad .plist or cache from what I can tell.  Like eddiethered, I have ensured the following:
My default homepage is about:blank, so upon Safari launch nothing other than a blank page should appear.
It is not an issue of restarting the OS and having "Reopen windows when logging back in" checked off, when I restart I ALWAYS uncheck that - but in the past week the same apps seem to relaunch automatically when they shouldn't.
This is not an issue of previously closing vs quitting the Safari browser, I Command-Q all my apps when I am finished with them.  Even when I hard-quit Safari, the old 4 browser tabs/websites reappear.
This is not a issue of Login Items as I don't have a single application listed as a Login Item for my Username.
I've also noticed other apps having issues (iChat, Chrome).  As of now Firefox is the only browser that is launching without any issues.  Yes an OS reinstall could be an option but that is a substantial amount of effort I don't want to invest.  Due to the other apps having issues this may be an issue at the OS level and not Safari.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Safari always opens new windows/tabs

Every time I click on a link Safari opens a new window or tab instead of just going to that link in the window that I am in. So when I close Safari I have multiple pages/tabs open.  It used to just go from page to page without opening new windows or tabs. What setting needs to be changed to get back to the single window?

I figure out what the problem is. I set the Google search to open link in new window, and then it can be opened in tab with one tap. Thanks for help!

  • Clicking on External Link in Safari Opens New Tab

I think it has to do with one of the preferences I've set within Safari but I just can't put a finger on which one.
Basically, I reinstalled Yosemite 10.10.3 on my MacBook Pro 13" (Late 2013) about a week ago. And then I tinkered with Safari preferences.
Since then, whenever I click on an external link, for example, an email address, Safari opens a New Tab instead of launching my Mail app.
Not sure how to do undo this.

From the Mail menu bar, select
Mail ▹ Preferences... ▹ General ▹ Default email reader: Mail
If you don't use Mail, you may be able to set the preference in the mail client you do use.

  • Safari opens new page in previous tab

    Hello!
I am a new macbook user (i got one just 2 months ago :)), but I was using safari for about 2 years now.
It all started with opening the links in new tab. I didn't know, that one could use command button to open a new tab, so i always went through "right click -> open in new tab"
then one day i didn't get that option anymore (just "open in new window") so i started to use command button to open a link in a new tab
but now the problem is the following: let's suppose i have 3 tabs open, and i want to open a new clean tab (tab 4) (its gonna be a direct transfer to the "top site" page). no prob here, i open it, but whenever i want to open in this new clean tab (tab 4) a new page (eg, google) it will automatically open in the previous tab (tab 3), tab 4 stays clean!!
how can i manage this problem?
i already tried to reinstall the latest version of safari, but it didnt help.
the problem is, its not always that i have this error, but it really drives me crazy when i do have it.
I am open to your every suggestion, thank you very much for your help!

    Hi and welcome....
First, go to your Safari menu bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. Restart Safari. If that didn't make a difference, reset Safari from the menu bar, select the top 7 buttons, click Reset.
If that didn't help either, try troubleshooting the Safari .plist file. Quit Safari (Command + Q)
Open a Finder window. Select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. It has a small house icon. Then open the Library folder then the Preferences folder.
Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop. Now launch Safari. If Tabs work, move that .plist file to the Trash. If not, move the .plist file back to the Preferences folder.

  • Safari opens new tabs extremely slow

My post is very similar to this one.
Since I got Safari 4, opening new tabs has been painful when having Safari open (in the background) for a longer period of time.. When starting Safari and doing stuff with tabs, no problem! However, after a couple of days, when I press +t to get a new tab, I have to wait (spinning wheel of death) 4 to 60 seconds for the new tab to appear.. This hangs my complete OS, not just Safari!
I am having this same problem on: Mac Mini early 2009 with Leopard + Safari 4, Macbook Pro Early 2008 (first penryn), Leopard and Snow Leopard with Safari 4, and now on my new MBP (mid 2009) Snow Leopard with Safari 4...
It is reaaallllly annoying (since opening tabs should be fast), and I suspect this has to do with the fact that I have 'Top Sites' as default page (Top Sites displays when I open up a new tab)...
I've turned that off now, to see if I still experience slowdowns, but this would mean loss of a great feature that I really like..
Please reply / post if you need more info

First of all, you don't need to use Top Sites as your default page; change that to an Empty Page and leave it that way. If you want to access Top Sites, there's a button on your Toolbar to do that.
Next, try this to solve your other problem(s):
    1. Go to Home/Library/Cookies and delete the Cookies.plist file.
    2. Go to Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
    3. Go to Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Web Page Previews and delete the contents of that folder.
    4. If you don't want to use the Top Sites or Cover Flow features, open Terminal and paste in this command:
defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSnapshotsUpdatePolicy -int 2
then press Enter or Return and quit Terminal
    5. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
    6. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
    7. Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete these files (if you have them):
    Downloads.plist
    History.plist
    Form Values
    LastSession.plist
    WebpageIcons.db
Then Repair Permissions, restart Safari and see if the speed is improved.

  • My safari has random pop ups and opens new ad tabs

    Hi there!
Ever since a few days I have some issues with random advertisements, pop-ups and my safari even opens up new tabs, when I open up another tab. It's really annoying and I read that it could be a virus that's constantly changing, so 'old' solutions might not be applicable anymore, so that is why I am opening a new discussion. Also, I read about firstly making a back-up, does this need to be done with an external hard drive?
    Thanks so much in advance!
These are print screens of the pop ups

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed the "VSearch" trojan. Remove it as follows.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. These instructions are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data before proceeding.
    Step 1
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot," "Trovi," or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
Reset the home page and default search engine in all the browsers, if it was changed.
    Step 2
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "com.vsearch.agent.plist" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
    /Library/Application Support/VSearch
    /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
The problem may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the Internet criminal behind VSearch has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Opening a new tab in safari opens an untitled tab while replacing the existing tab with top sites

When I open a new tab in safari, it opens an untitled tab while replacing the existing tab with top. Then if I have other tabs open, the website url of the page I was on before I opened the untitled tab freezes and is shown on each other tab.
How can i fix this problem? It is starting to occur with increasing frequency.

I had the same problem and I suspect you are using Glims. I uninstalled Glims and voila, problem gone. I reinstalled Glims and the problem returned.

  • Safari opens new window

    Hi
I am wanting links to open in a tab rather than new window the preferences are set to tab but it is opening in new window please help

Some web pages specify that links open in a new window with certain code that bypasses the Safari keystroke to open in a new tab. Most links, however, will open in a new tab when you Command-click.
Safari doesn't have a built-in for opening links automatically in new tabs when they're coded to open in a new page.

  • Safari opens a dozen tabs automatically

Safari automatically opens dozens of tabs when launched on my MacBook Pro - before and after Mavericks was installed.
How do I keep it from doing that?

Jeremy at Apple Support is a genius!
I had changed the settings in Safari a month ago and accidentally set it to Open with the top 26 sites. What I wanted to do was prevent Safari from opening new windows as I was doing searches because keeping track of all the windows was confusing.
    Here's how to change it:
Safari menu>Preferences>Tabs tab>Open pages in tabs instead of windows: Always
Then click on the General tab>Safari Opens with: A new window>New Window opens with: Homepage>New tabs opens with: Empty Page

  • How do I change "open new window" tab behaviour?

I used to be a Firefox user ages ago, and then switched to Chrome for awhile. I'm coming back now, and I'm noticing some strangeness with tabs and "new windows". Can't figure out how to get around it.
My "Home Page" is set up to open three tabs. One is MSN, the second is my email, and the third is Google Calendar. That works great, except..
    1) If I pick "New Window" (Ctrl-N), it re-opens those same three tabs. When I open a new Window, I don't want to open those three tabs again. They're already open in the primary window. How do I stop Firefox from doing that? I can't figure out how to make that happen.
    2) The other is about the "Home" button. If I push the home button it loads all three of those tabs. In Chrome there's a separate setting for the home button vs the startup tabs. Is there any way to replicate this? I occasionally hit the home button just to load MSN. I don't want all three of those tabs when I hit the home button. Any way around this?
    Danke.

    That is not possible.
A new window opens the home page(s), so you would have to set the home page to about:blank or create a bookmark with the location set to about:blank and hold the Shift key and left-click to open this page in a new window.
You can add those three pages to the command line of the Firefox desktop shortcut to open these page when you start Firefox.

  • Setting mailto links to open new window/tab?

When I click a mailto link, I would like to be able to have it open a new window/tab, not open my webmail (yahoo) in the same window. Also, when I click said mailto link, I have issues with the link sending the correct info to yahoo. I end up getting everything in the to field with the mailto: and also the subject: in this field. e.g. [email protected]?subject=test

My MAILTO problem was finally fixed on the June 29, 2012 Firefox version 14 beta 10 release.
