  • Boot into BIOS or mac equivalent?

How do I, or what is the Mac equivalent of booting into BIOS?
That question is more for interest, I see there are other ways to achieve on Mac what I would normally do from BIOS on a non Mac machine. Thinking of power options and scheduled startups here.
    Thanks
    Neil

    Hi Neil,
Intel-based Macs don't use BIOS, but its successor EFI http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExtensibleFirmwareInterface
To my knowledge, there is no way for a Mac user to boot into the EFI, only certified Apple technicians do seem to have a tool which allows them.

  • Help - No Boot after bios flash - p7N SLI Plat.

OK - I have a new P7NSLI Plat that I updated the bios to A738NMS.120.
I however did this using a floppy ie ran the amifud from the floppy and the bios file was on the floppy (this is how I usually do BIOS updates) .. It was only after this and the fact the computer now does nothing after the reboot I found the bit that says do not update from a floppy.
So basically I have a machine that doesnt do anything - you push the power switch and the fans light up and the leds go on but nothing else - no beeps from the graphics card and no POST.
The only thing I can find is a bit in the read me that says if machine won't boot use BIOS recovery method - but it doesnt say what that is.
    Help

Please provide full system specs.  Read the >>Posting Guide<< first.
Try to boot in barebone configuration:
    - no hard drives
    - no optical drives
    - no peripheral USB Devices
    - no card readers
    - no add-on cards:
    just:
    - CPU
    - video card
    - one stick of memory in first slot
    - power connectors
    - PS/2 keyboard
Unplug the A/C power connectors from your PSU, then remove the CMOS Battery and let the system rest for while (10-15 minutes), then hit the clear CMOS button at the back panel again, put the battery back in and try to boot.

  • Z77A-GD65 Cannot boot from Bios A

    Hi,
I was fine for years until about two weeks ago, when PC sometimes didn't boot up (no VGA signal, keyboard dead). I fixed the situation by trying to turn it on/off again few times and then it worked. Few days it was OK, and then it happened again. Fixed by the same way. Today, it happened again and I wasn't able to fix it.
I checked LED error code and it was cycling about 5 codes like 49,55,4F, .. (see the attachment). I tried to check/remove all components with no success. I also tried CMOS clearing (connect pins, battery out), but still nothing.
At the end, I tried to switch to Bios B and PC booted without any problem. I updated Bios B to the latest version and now I am fine. It also looks that problem is fixed.
But what is wrong with Bios A? I want to fix it and use it, but I don't know how. I tried to update the bios with Msi forum hq usb flashing tool (booted from Bios B and then switched to Bios A before flashing), but it is still dead.
Thanks a lot for your help.

I also had some sort of same problem (Bios A not booting, bios B OK)
BUT remember one thing: that bios switch is not really hardware. To really switch between bioses you must unplug power cord, wait for capacitor to discharge and then flip the switch.
So the sollution for you  (that worked for me twice) is: clear CMOS (search forum for detailed method). Switch to BIOS B, Make bootable USB with BIOS version 10.5 (A5) (because this version REALLY works with option to flash the other BIOS). Update (or just downgrade to BIOS 10.5) and then clear CMOS with powercord out and battery out. Boot from bios B and within bios flash BIOS A from BIOS B. You will have same version on both Bioses. After that switch to BIOS A (again after clear CMOS etc...) and now you just can upgrade to which bios version you want using the USB bootable stick.
I now have BIOS A with version 10.11 (AB) and BIOS B with 10.5 (A5) just to restore BIOS A in case of failure.
First time when I did this was because mobo failed to boot and can't save OC profiles. Second time was (probably) because of many OC testing.

Hey, any help?  My 24" iMac won't boot.  I only get a white screen when turning on.  It won't open in safe or recovery mode.  Any suggestions?

If you can't boot from your installer DVD, then take it in for service.

    HI daddio,
Ok some things first I need to know...Did you use Microsoft cleanup utility to clean up all those uninstalls you have done?
I hate Norton and anyone who reads my posts will know that. I have seen way too many infected PC's by Norton users. Did you try the EWIDO and AdAware scan? I see you said you read lots of posts. That is helping folks remove the malware in order to get iTunes and quicktime back to health.

  • My macbook boots up and only stays on for 30sec and goes into sleep mode

My macbook boots up and only stays on for 30sec and goes into sleep mode! Any suggestions as to why this might be happening? Thanks....

I assume you have checked your sleep settings in System Preferences>Energy saver
I also assume this has just happened recently and spontaneously, not after installing any particular hardware or software or you would probably have mentioned it...if anything new has been added recently, obviously just remove it!
It could be the battery - have your tried it just on mains? If it's a pre unibody MacBook try it without the battery at all. This could happen if you have a non-Apple (cheap Chinese) replacement battery.
Try NVRAM, PRAM & SMC resets (Google if you don't know how)
Try booting from the install media and repairing or reinstalling OS X. (Back up first!)
Just out of interest if you boot from a DVD or go into Open Firmware or Boot Select modes, does it still sleep after 30 seconds or is it just in OS X?

    Try a PRAM reset:
    PRAM RESET
    Zap the PRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • NEO4 Plat Sli SIL3231 Raid problem - Can't boot after BIOS Flash!

Hi, I have and Neo4 Platinum SLI. I had "the problem" a while back with the nVida raid where there was a hang on shutdown. I then created a RAID0 using my two Rators on the SIL3132 controller, and have three hitachi drives hooked up to SATA1 - SATA3. Back then, I had trouble getting my SIL3132 array to be the main boot volume. I could boot when no other drives were attached, but as soon as I attached them, I get the boot disk error after post. Somehow I got it to work, but not think this time, I flashed the BIOS and ran into the same problems, as the BIOS got reset.
First, I went in and re-enabled RAID on the sil3132 controller, and change the boot order to have the RAID voluime be the first boot device, and my other drivers be the next on down the line. Upon rebooting, my system hangs after verifying DMI pool at a blanksscreen for 5 - 10 minutes then gives my the "missing HAL.dll error". if I go back into the BIOS and disable SATA1/SATA2 and SATA3/SATA4 my computer boots just fine. I even completley disconnected my three drives an my system boots just fine. I have searched these forums and could not find anything close to my issue and wondered if it is something I am just missing in the setup. I will say that at POST my IDE devices has always read:
    IDE Primary Master [None]
    IDE Secondary Master [None]
IDE Primary Slave (my first DVD/R drive)
IDE Secondary Slave (My second DVD/R drive)
IDE Third Master (a 250gb drive)
IDE Fourth Master (a 250gb drive)
IDE Fifth Master (a 250gb drive)
    IDE Sixth Master [None]
Is this normal? all my hard drives are SATA. the raptors and three SATAII drives.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Since the Nvida raid problem seems to have been fixed (as far as I read) I would like to go back to using the nVidia raid controller. I just need to back up my system first!
    Thanks in advance.

    Jkmet,
I have noted the same problem, with a USB Pen drive.
If I leave it plugged in and shut down, the next time I cold boot it tries to boot for the pen drive.  What I found out the any time you add a drive before booting the BIOS places it at the top of the Hard Drive Priority list making it the boot drive.  Same thing happens when I plug in a new SATA and does not mater where it is connected.  So, what I have to do any time you add a drive with the power off you have to boot to BIOS reset the Hard drive priority list, then save, exit and reboot to boot from you windows drive.
I am sure this is a BIOS Bug, but MSI states that the way it should would work.
    Roger
When submitting a problem, include a complete list of your system components; include part numbers, all Power Supply Voltages, and their output ratings.  It is almost impossible to estimate what your problem is without knowing something about it. Here is the link to the web site.

  • New K9N2 SLI Platinum isn't booting into BIOS

So i just built a new system with an MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum, and installation went by with a breeze. However, after supplying power, and turning the system on for the first time I'm met with absolutely nothing.
I'm not the most advanced in this category, and I've certainly never experienced the likes of this ever. I've gone through the hardware configuration a thousand times, and I'd know if it were that.
I was wondering if anybody knew a few tricks to get this new board to boot. I'm suspecting it's probably something small and obvious I wouldn't ever think of.
But yeah, any help would be much appreciated.
    Current System:
    Mobo: MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum
CPU: AMD Phenom X4 9850 (black edition)/stock cooler
    RAM: Corsair Dominator 2x2048Mb 1066Mhz DDR2
GPU: PNY XLR8 GeForce 9800 GTX
    HDD1: Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB 10K RPM
    HDD2: Seagate Barracude 1.5TB 7200RPM
No operating systems yet (which is kind of impossible since I can't even set the boot order without the BIOS loading.) But I plan to run XP Pro alongside Gentoo.

All fans are spinning fine, I'll get the PSU info later, I took it from an old system I built before my last deployment. It's an 850 watt (single 12 volt rail) system, not sure the exact specs on it anymore.
I do believe though, that I've managed to knock something loose as it keeps beeping repeatedly now when it boots. Before it was absolute silence on boot. (which is weird because i don't actually remember installing the speaker?)
Oh, the DVD drive is from another system too, and pretty old, but it opens, and functions.
I also swapped between onboard video, and the graphics card to see if it was maybe the graphics card and still nothing.
Though I have to use a DVI converter with the graphics card (which is pretty lame for a 200+ dollar graphics card to have two DVI ports and an SVID port, but no HDMI port.)
Anyway, I originally tried to boot with my 1080P television connected into the HDMI DVI* port for the mobo.
Keep good language in a forum!
Now if I can just figure out what was wrong in the first place eh?
It seems the reset button allowed it to boot into the BIOS, but a regular boot wont?
Edit: Still wont boot into BIOS or POST though, I'm met with a blinking line that's been there for over 10 minutes now.

  • Windows 7 only boots from bios, Start-up repair cannot identify windows.

So I recently bought a Samsung SSD 840 PRO 256GB to replace my 80GB Intel SSD. My plan was to migrate Windows 7 to the new drive, delete the old drive and install Ubuntu 14.04 on it. I used this tutorial to transfer the data: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYK-C4rIxrI
It didn't work the first time, so I tried a second time (it overwrote the data from the first try.) and it looked like it worked. I unplugged everything except the Samsung, and it booted fine. Then I took the Samsung off and installed Ubuntu 14.04 on the
old drive (which seems to have its own issues, but I will deal with that later.)
When I try system repair, I am unable to choose an OS to repair. When I try bootrec /rebuildbcd it says it cannot recognize the file system and to make sure the system drivers are loaded.
BUT, I can still boot to Windows if I select the drive in bios. (I think Ubuntu is broken, because that wont boot at all.)
My priority is to get windows working, hopefully without reinstalling.

I fixed it somehow, but that was not the problem. I re-installed Ubuntu on the old drive, except I completely deleted all the stuff on the drive first. Then I rebooted both drives separately, they both booted automatically. Now everything works except the
    grub boot loader.
I did say that I could still boot to windows by selecting the Samsung in the bios... so your answer didn't help.
I think that the old drive might have been overwritten the wrong way and there was still something from that drive messing with the boot order. That might explain why it worked when I had only the Samsung hooked up.

  • Satteliite C50 wont go to boot men/BIOS settings and directly goes to Windows.

Hello,i wanted to install Ubuntu on my Sattelite C50 but i cant change the boot priority settings because i cant go to boot menu or BIOS setup screen.
I tried holding F2 or F12 but both didnt work.
    Any help?

I'm assuming your C50 is using Windows 8 or 8.1; you didn't say!  Hold down the shift key while clicking on Shutdown. Then, hold down the F2 key while pressing the Power button. This will get you into BIOS/UEFI.

  • GS70 2PE only boots to BIOS after flash.

    Hi.
I reinstalled windows 8.1 cause of some problems
Everything was working fine after reinstall, then i found out i wanted to update the BIOS in order to have everything updated.
I downloaded my BIOS file from the site i get all my drives and utilities (MSI webpage)
Which seemed like a good idea.(Well messing around with BIOS usually never is, but at the time it did )
I followed the instructions from the link that was included in the BIOS file. So i did not do anything wrong during the "steps"
At first everything went fine. The flash was succesfull. I restarted and the screen just started flashing. And it wouldn't stop.
It was late so i gave up.
The next day i started the computer the screen didn't flash at all. Now it just wont boot into windows it only boots into the BIOS.
The version on the bios went from 1.1 to 1.2 after i updated.
Does anyone know what i can do to fix it?

    Quote from: sivertsen.jim on 18-February-15, 17:36:14
I need to make a new post cause i cant edit the other 2 for some reason.
I can get through to windows but now its just bugged. every time i log on windows now it acts as if i was logged in with another user when i wasnt.
And EUFI wont let me start the computer at all, and i cant boot anything with the legacy mode activated.
Does anyone have a link to older versions of the BIOS for the GS70 2PE?
laptops can't do backflash :/ doing that will just give you a error saying that this version is older than what current one is installed :/ secondly RAPID thingy you get is because your laptop uses RAID so the intel rapid storage technology or w.e name is will pop up on boot under LEGACY. When RAID is assigned.

  • Satelite L300 wont boot on HD when there's no boot disk

The hard disk (HD) of my Satelite L300 crashed so I had to replace it and unfortunately I can't find my reco disks. I did manage to get my hand on a Vista OEM and managed to install that on the laptop with out any problem. However the laptop won't boot on the HD, even though if is the first boot device, but it will boot if there is a boot CD on the CD/DVD drive. The laptop won't boot on the HD but will read the CD and say "Press any key to boot from CD". I won't press a key and the laptop will process to boot from HD. I can use the laptop as normal.
On the BIOS setup, the first boot device is the HD then the CD drive. I checked the disk management and it said that the HD is active and healthy.
Is there a driver I have to install before VIsta? Where can I get it?

Something is wrong with the operating system on the hard drive. The hard drive is being seen correctly in the Bios and is the first boot device, but it is only booting from the CD, so there has to be something wrong with the installation of the operating system. I would try installing the operating system again and see if that fixes it. If not, try a different copy of the operating system or maybe a different operating system entirely. Like XP or Linex. If all of those fail, I would be concerned about the new hard drive. Was the new hard drive the same as the one it replaced? Some of the new hard drives spin faster and are much larger than the originals and may cause problems for the computer.
