My Satellite P20 is very slow

My P20 3ghz 512 ram is unbelievably slow. My old notebook with just 1 ghz laptop is 100x faster! Opening applications, switching between them, running more than one all make it crawl and crash. I've tried everything I can. Any suggestions please as I'm about to sell it!

Hello Mike
Since almost two years I am owner of Satellite P20 (red one) and I am very satisfied. It is a great machine. My unit has a little bit more RAM as yours, SP2 is installed too but it runs perfectly. The start up could be a little faster but have no problems like you.
You have mentioned that you have tried everything but did you also try to reinstall the unit with recovery CD?
Over time, Windows loses stability. If you keep a computer for more than two years, at some point the best solution is to reinstall Windows from scratch.

  • Satellite Pro U300 very slow at opening programmes

    Dear all,
I bought a Satellite Pro U300 in Feb 2008 and I have only used it 3-4 times since then... It is very slow at opening programmes (I have only a statistical programme installed) and webpages , and creates problems when I try to download other programmes that have a different version than Windows Vista.
I really have regretted buying this laptop and I am looking for someone to sell it.
Before I do so, I was wondering whether I could uninstall Windows Vista and install Windows XP for example, or do something else that would make my laptop pleasant to use.

    Hi
The preinstalled OS could run slowly because many different applications are running in the background.
My notebook was slow too until some background applications have been disabled.
You can disable it in MSCONFIG.
Type in RUN window msconfig and check the tab called startup.
There you can find the software which could slow down the OS.
    Regarding the Win XP installation;
Yes, you can also install Win XP. Using the Win XP the notebook should be little bit faster because Win XP doesnt need many hardware resources.

  • Satellite P300-156 very slow

    Hi people,
my laptop is very slow, pop ups still getting through even on the highest setting and like a fool when i purchased it i didn't make any backup disc!

The hidden partition is created by Vista and its contains the data and files which are necessary to repair the OS.
You can pres F8 when powering the unit.
    Then a menu should appear.
Here you could choose first option: Repair my Computer.
    Now new windows will appear.
If your notebook supports an HDD recovery option then you should find a point called Toshiba HDD recovery. If the HDD recovery is not available, then you will not find this point.
You should also find some repair points provided by Vista
    Try it if you want

  • Satellite A200-1BP: very slow performance

I am not fully satisfied for the performance of my notebook Satellite A200-1BP.
It is so slow than i expected even if it has 2GB ram.
    What could be the problem?
Is this due to Norton Antivirus of what?
How can i configure my notebook for full performance?
    Somebody help please!

Full performance is pretty general term. I hope you know very well that Vista needs much more resources as WXP and, generally speaking, it runs maybe a little bit slower. Of course the performance depends on all running background processes.
To be honest first thing I have done is to remove preinstalled Norton. I am pretty sure without Norton the system will run better. Please check also all tools and utilities that start with OS (START > RUN > MSCONFIG) and disable all stuff you do not need.
What you also can do is to disable all hardware components you do not need like modem or PCMCIA slot. As you can see there are several ways to optimize OS and make it running faster.

  • Re: Satellite C855-1GN very slow performance - booting procedure takes 15min

My sister bought a Satellite C855-1GN installed with Win7 64-bit last December (typical - 4 days out of guarantee now) and for sometime has found it getting slower and slower.
She asked me to take a look at it for her, and she is quite right, this laptop is appalling unresponsive for even the most basic of tasks like opening Windows Explorer, which takes over a minute to open.
It's a similar story for pretty much any button press on this machine, sometimes longer depending on what has been clicked. Even getting the thing booted up from power button press to desktop being visible (let alone usable) takes a staggering 15 minutes plus.
Entering text such the password for user to login to Windows, or a URL in any browser (IE and chrome installed by default) results in the spinning circle equivalent to an egg timer for at least 60 seconds before anything happens, as does pretty much any button click. For example, Windows start button or right click on anything whatsoever.
Initially I suspected some kind of malware / too much rubbish installed. Ran full scans, no issues. Disabled / uninstalled all of the bloatware I could find, still no difference.
Shut down all power saving features, still appallingly slow.
Windows Experience / Task Manager / resmon all report nothing out of the ordinary nor anything eating resources. Out of desperation, reset to Out Of Box Experience condition using the hidden recovery partition... which took over 24 hours to complete, and that's not an exaggeration.
I went to bed, then to work for the day, and it still hadn't finished until I'd been home for a couple of hours.
This machine now has a completely fresh (albeit Toshiba specific) Win7 install, and runs just as horrifically slowly. I'm still waiting for desktop, 17 minutes after powering it on before typing this. It's had several reboots, and is not still installing anything.
6GB of RAM is more than ample. Whilst not a P3, 5 or 7, there is no way that an Intel B950 dual core processor running at an admittedly not top class 2.10GHz can be this slow (especially as it wasn't until a few months ago), I've had awful Celerons in my time which have been infinitely faster than this.
Has anyone else had similarly pathetic performance from this model? If so, we're any of you able to resolve it? Or should we just bin this paperweight?

    Hi
In the past we have discussed many times about similar issues and some people were not satisfied about performance of brand new notebooks preinstalled with original recovery image.
As small example you can check this thread. Generally speaking there is described what you should do with this machine. You must, I like to use word optimize, preinstalled operating system. It will definitely run better and faster.
Other way there can also be problem with HDD. If your sister likes this machine I recommend you a small investment in new hardware. Exchange HDD with SSD. SSDs are not so expensive anymore so you can buy one, I would say, with 250GB and I think it is enough free space for their work.
You cannot imagine how fast they are. I use one on my old P500. Notebook starts in 40 seconds only.
Im pretty sure with new SSD and optimized original Win7 that you got with this notebook your sister will have good and pretty fast machine.

  • Satellite L730 / L735 very slow..buffering online content, startup etc

I have only owned this since 26th May this year, and I have found the performance really slow.
I can't watch online content.. it takes ages buffering and has gotten worse over the past few weeks even though we have got a strong connection.
Also it is taking about 10 minutes on startup!!
Any ideas, seems a bit poor to be having such serious problems so early on? We have checked and defragmented the hard disk drive and that hasn't helped at all. There is very little stored on the HD.. less than 10% used.

    > I can't watch online content.. it takes ages buffering and has gotten worse over the past few weeks even though we have got a strong connection.
The video streaming depends on the server where the video is hosted too!
If the server is overloaded, the performance can go down and this affects the streaming performance.
Did you notice the slow performance using other software too?
Please also note that background processes which are running in background of the operating system can slow down the system performance.
Usually you can disable not necessary background processes using msconfig.
But be careful with that. This can affect the notebook functionality too. If you dont know the single process, google for that to get more details.
I use the CCLeaner (freeware tool) to improve my notebook performance. Maybe it could be useful for you too.

  • Satellite A300-1PH - Very slow statrting of Windows

    Toshiba Satellite A300- 1PH.
Due to some Viruses, I started the recovery on my laptop and installed the fresh windows Vista Home premium. But now I am facing a problem.
My windows load very slowly. When I start my Laptop, after the logo of Windows appear, it takes almost 4-5 minutes to load the Destop and the Secreen shows the message "Please Wait".
Before recovery it never took such a long time. It's been onliy 1 month I have bought it.
Can any body tell me please what is the actualy problem?

I am very happy you are satisfied now. Many times on this forum I wrote about right OS configuration.
Anyway, Tempro is nice application and useful for people with low level of notebook knowledge who need some help with updates and notebook monitoring. In my opinion this can just confuse notebook owners with different messages and upgrade notifications.
I recommend you to remove it from the system. Believe me with les such background running processes and applications your notebook will run better and more stabile.
For years I use Avira Antivir and it the best solution. It runs in the background, doesnt need many resources and make updates automatically. You can get it for free under http://www.free-av.com/
    Latest version is 9.00.
If you have more questions please let me know.
    Bye and good luck.

  • My Satellite P15 is very slow

    Hi.
My TS p15 S479 needs nearly 2 minutes to boot. It's frustrating. It also takes like 2 minutes to shut down. I tested my comp for viruses and ****, deleted all programs that didn't came with the computer.I do a lot of dvd backing up, and sometimes the computer just freezes in the middle of backing up. Once it even wouldn't shut down and the screen said "shutting down... " entire night. I'm confused.
What's wrong? What can i do? Thx

    Hello
In just short words: I think that your notebook needs to be ?clean? preinstalled. I don?t know what are you doing with your notebook but after long period of ?intensive usage? the notebook loose the performance.
I recommend you to back up all your important data and preinstall unit with delivered recovery media. Create two partitions, configure the unit to run with all applications and settings you need and after that you can create your own recovery image. Save it on second partition and on this time you can reinstall the image every time you need. After just 20 minutes you will have your favorite configuration any time you need.

  • Satellite 1800 plays DVDs very slow

My Satellite S1800 is very slow, when trying to watch dvd movies, picture and voice stucks and when watching videos from youtube, its same thing.
I just formatted my hard drive and re-installed winxp and thought that would help , but no , its still same thing.
What is the problem? My toshibas specs: 1Ghz , 256 ram , 8mb trident cyberblade ai1, 20gb, i think those should roll some dvd movie?

First, I wanted to answer with a detailed reasons of this, but this forum did NOT allowed me to post my "polite and helpful" message due to spelling mistakes even there wasn't any. Then it allowed me to post without spelling checking. (did not understand, weird)
The answer of your problem is because of excessive cpu usage which i had on my similar S1800-100 while watching any MPEG-2 video or youtube video.
I don't know why the DVD drive was insertings into this notebook, maybe for data transfer or other viewing, the fact that your CPU is not strong enough to render DVD movies, it should be the reason.
Please check your CPU usage while watching videos.

    Hi, everyone!

I need this for my study and home using. Computer working VERY slowly. Now I have a Windows XP Pro SP3 64-bit version. Programs what I have only Ms Office, Skype, Nero, antivirus - BitDefender. I do not play any games. Application Im using for my study only - Ms Word.
My computer was checked in service center and no any faults were wound - no any sofware and hardware damages, viruses, no any manufacture faults. Owners of these model please give me advice what to do. I stucked!
Do I need to install Windows XP 32bit or install Windows 2000 or any hardware upgrade (memory ... whatever)? I don`t want be disappointed by TOSHIBA!
    Ill appreciate any HELP!

    Hi buddy,
Can you be a little bit more detailed, please? What do you understand with very slow?
How long it takes to startup Windows?
How long it takes to start an application?
I have to say that Windows XP 64bit wasnt popular and there is no official support from Toshiba for this OS. If you want to use Windows XP, I can recommend installing the 32bit version.
Have you tested your notebook with factory settings? Does it work properly with preinstalled OS from Toshiba?
Im also Satellite L300 owner and I use the preinstalled Windows XP 32bit from Toshiba. Im very satisfied with this notebook, its pretty fast and need few energy. :)

  • Very slow working Satellite L30-10V

I've had my toshiba just under two years now and for pretty much as long as I remember its been very slow. Last week it died completly and kept telling me there was a harddisk error preventing windows from opening. I did the product recovery on toshibas advice and got my computer working again but its still as slow as ever, if not more! Theres nothing on here to even make it slow.
I've changed the power setting to a more efficient one, done a disk clean up and defragmented it but nothings changed. I have over 45GB free out of 59GB so I'm not sure that updating the memory would help?
    I need advice please, HELP!

Sure sounds like the symptoms when a hard drive is dying.
The slowdown occurs because reads and writes to the drive must often be made multiple times before they are successful.
What does chkdsk have to say?
Check your hard disk for errors

  • Very slow new Satellite L40

I'd be grateful for any help you guys can give me.
I have a new-ish Satellite L40 (bought last autumn). It's a dead basic machine -- Intel Celeron / 1.60GHz / 1015 RAM -- running Vista Home Premium. It was bought just to do word processing work + some very light internet use. The problem is that it runs very slowly (including taking forever to get going when I first turn it on).
I've virus tested it to death. I regularly run spyware detection / elimination programmes. I've cut the number of start-up programmes right back. All the results say I've got a clam machine. But still it's as slow as hell. And when I say slow, I can just about make a cup of coffee in the time it takes to access the net.
I've contacted Toshiba technical support, and the best they could suggest was that I reformat the hard disk, which is pretty drastic. If anyone out there has a better suggestion, I'd love to hear it. Right now, I'm rather regretting my initial purchase.
    Thanks a lot -- Max

To be honest this drastic solution is not a bad proposal.
But what do you mean exactly with slow machine???
How long do you need for a booting?
Fact is that many applications are preinstalled on this notebook and this could be a main reason for a long booting. But fact is that many of these applications are necessary to run all the notebook features.
Furthermore a antivirus program which is running in the background and could affect the booting time. Long time ago I have used the Norton Antivirus and this software was a reason why my notebook was very slow... I changed it and now I'm use the freeware software like Antivir. It's much better...

  • Satellite U500 - Copy process is very slow

    Hi friends,
I'm using Satellite U500-1f5, for last 2 months. It is core i5 with Windows 7. Still the copying process is very slow and some times booting is little bit slower.
Can anyone post a valid answer to resolve this problem?

    Hey mate,
Sounds like that you have installed a lot of software that slows down the performance of your notebook.
So which programs you have installed?
Theoretically it could also be caused due a virus or trojan. You should check your notebook for viruses using a good antivirus program like AntiVir.
Try also to defragment the HDD. If you install/uninstall many programs, you should defragment the HDD from time to time. You can use the integrated Windows defragmentation tool.

  • DVD Speeds - can I play slower recorded DVDs - Satellite P20-801

I've got a Satellite P20-801. I'm thinking about buying a DVD Recorder so I can transfer VHS material onto DVD. If I recorded it at a slower speed, would I be able to play it on my laptop? How can I find out if the DVD player on the P20 can play different speeds - assuming it's possible?
    Thanks.

    Hi
As far as I know the recording speed is not relevant for playing. You can record DVD on minimum or maximum speed and the DVD can be played on your P20. My previous notebook was P20 and I have never had any problem about that.

  • Satellite A300-MM1 - start-up is very slow

I bought 3 Laptops (Satellite A300-MM1) a month ago but I noticed they were all very slow at start up (boot).
They took about 6 minutes till I saw the desktop and sometimes don't work.
    Satellite A300 MM1 (harman/kardon)
Windows Vista Home Premium (Service Pack1)
    Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual T3200 @ 2.00 GHz 2.00 GHz
    3.00 GB RAM
I thought it was the Antivirus but I put McAfee Antivirus in two of them and Kaspersky in the other but I faced the same problem.
    What I should do?

I bought an A300 21H and start up was appauling so I took the following out and now I'm up and running in about 30 secs,
    Tempro
    Config Free
    Toshiba power saver
Mcafee AV and now using Kaspersky
    Chicony Tray
and disabled flash cards via control panel (can still use F keys)
When I first got my laptop it took 2 min to start up and battery life of between 1 hr 10min to 1 hr 30min
by removing the above my start up is under 30 secs and battery life is about 2hr 30 mins.
The programs were removed by using the RUN and typing msconfig
untick the boxes under the START UP tab that you dont want running
RESTART machine then CONTROL PANEL and uninstall them
Please note Mcafee needs a removal tool off their website to completely remove it..
Flash Cards was disabled only and not completely removed via CONTROL PANEL then PERFORMANCE ICON then top left hand corner MANAGE START UP PROGRAMS then DISABLE..........
Now your laptop will be very much quicker
