My Satellite P30 stops untimely

Hello,
I've got a Satellite P30 since 2004 and it is good.
But since a few month, when I run a lot of applications simultaneously, or when I run applications that needs a lot of RAM or UC ressources (like games or a or anti-virus in complete analysis), the notebook stop without a signal (sound or message).
Then, when I restart it, I go on a page that ask me for choosing between "without error mode" or "last good config" or "normal start".
Generaly, I start normaly (but the same thing occurs when I choose the others) but the notebook stop before the Windows login page in the same way.
It could occurs 5 to 10 times before the notebook restart correctly.
For information, this problem first occurs when I installed and runed the last Baphomet game. But since that, I've formated the notebook and reinstall it correctly and the problem have seemed to be desapeared. But now since 2 or 3 days, it came back.
Anyone have an idea of what is my problem?
Virus? Internal temperature? Hardware problem? Do I need a BIOS update?
Thanks for your interest and sorry for my english (i'm just french! :p )

Hi
> Virus? Internal temperature? Hardware problem? Do I need a BIOS update?
- Virus -> I dont think its a Virus if you use the Antivirus software which is always up to date
- BIOS update -> would not recommend BIOS update because the notebook ran properly with this BIOS all the time long.
- Hardware problem -> maybe something wrong with the HDD but its not easy to say until you will buy a new HDD and will test it.
- Internal temperature -> most likely. In my experience the high temperature causes many strange issues and this sounds like an overheating. Possibly the fans are dirty and dust and debris prevents the cooling module from properly running. In my opinion the fans should be cleaned. The vacuum cleaner is a nice toy but risky because the strong vacuuming can damage the fans. Many computer shops provide professional compressed air sprays which can be used to clean the ventilators.
If it does not help I would recommend contacting an notebook technician for professional cleaning. Maybe a new thermal grease which is placed between the CPU and the cooling modules could improve the situation.

  • Windows XP Home unable to boot on Satellite P30

    Hello
    I've been using WinXP-H on a (7yr-old) Satellite P30.
The screen died a while back so I've been using an external monitor, but that's an issue for another time.
A few days ago Windows was updating. After about 4hours, it restarted by itself - not sure if it finished updating as I was away from my desk. Windows didn't boot, just hung on the black WinXp start screen.
I turned it off with the power button, left it for a while and tried to reboot. The first few times I was able to reach the 'Safe Mode, Last Known Good Config etc' screen with F8, but it only got to Windows once, where it froze.
Now on startup, only the F2 & F12 buttons work (for blue BIOS screen and Boot options). Trying to boot from the HD results in some not normal clicking noises then the "a disk error occurred. CTRL-ALT-DEL to restart" message. I tried using the Toshiba Recovery Disk, but it seems that'll wipe the files left on the HD, even if it manages to reinstall Windows.
I'd backed up most of my files, but there are some I hadn't managed to yet, so would like to try to keep them. From the forums it seems there are several possible solutions:
    1. Boot from the Toshiba Recovery Disc to format the HD, and maybe recover some of the files later with File Recovery software.
    2. Get a WinXP-H installation disc, which seems to have a Recovery program.
    3. Remove the HD and connect it to another computer to remove my files. I'm not experienced in taking computers apart, but would give it a go if it was the best option.
    Cheers, any advice appreciated.
    Al

Yeah, it's a great machine. At least when it's working...
I'll have a go at connecting the HDD as an external. In the meantime, I tried running the Toshiba Recovery disc, and it got to about 5% (allocating NTFS) before stopping with 'Error 29004 Uncorrectable data error'.
It seems even more likely that the HDD has a physical problem (especially since it started making clicking noises...). After the Recovery thing stopped, I tried running chkdsk, but no luck:
    X:\>c:\
    C:\>chkdsk /r
    Bad command or filename
    C:\>chkdsk c: /r
    Bad command or filename
    etc
    Is that the correct command?

  • Satellite P30 - Blue screen after reinstall OS

I just reinstall OS (Windows XP) on my older laptop Toshiba Satellite P30, but after first reboot (required to continue XP configuration) the DOS blue screen appear (System Has Recovered From Serious Error).
The laptop cannot load Windows XP at all. Do you have some idea whats going on ?
    Thanks :)

    Hi,
This looks like a hardware issue. You should check the HDD and RAM.
    http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm#DFT
With the Drive Fitness Test you can test your HDD. Download the CD image, burn it on a CD and boot from it. Then you can the HDD.
On the same website is a user guide if you want to know more.
    http://memtest86.com/
Memtest86 is a diagnostic tool to check the RAM. There you can also download a CD image.
Its easy to use. Run the test 3-4 hours and then you will see if the RAM has some errors.
    Good luck!
    Bye

  • Satellite P30 - Maximum Hard Drive size

    Hi there,
I have a Satellite P30-141 with BIOS version 1.40 running XP pro SP2.
The hard drive is a 60GB model and I want to upgrade to a larger model.
I am thinking of a Seagate 5400.3 160GB model but I am unsure if the BIOS will support such a large drive. Has anyone done this before? What is the largest drive you have put in your P30?
I also have the Hitachi 7K100 100GB as a second option if the Seagate wont work.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi,
I'm not sure about 160GB, but 100GB should work without problems.

  • Satellite P30: it doesn't recognise DVD discs correctly

Hello I have a Satellite P30, I am unable to read DVD's or CD when I try to open the DVD or CD the explorer session seems to hang for a while then comes up with a blank DVD-RAM Drive screen with the option on the left to write files to CD. I have installed the latest drivers and BIOS for my Laptop.
I'm at a loss, all was working fine till recently the PC does'nt seem to recognise I have a cd drive or normalDVD drive it just see's it as a DVD RAM drive.
when I put a dvd in the light on the side flashes orange and the system just hangs for a while .I sometimes get an I/O error when trying to read from a cd. What ever I put in it thinks i want to write files

The matsu****a UJ-830s is about as sketchy as dvd drives come. Mine flat out refuses to read, or write for that matter about 90% of the media I've tried in it. I find the only disks it will write are the Taiyo Yuden 16x or 8x media, rebranded as sony. They're the ones with the octagonal foam spacer at the top of the 50 or 25 pack, rather than the round spacer.
It isn't any concern that it shows up as a DVD-RAM drive, as that is what it always does anyway. I highly recommend if you can't get it working, to purchase an external burner, and forget about the one onboard.
    Good luck.

  • Satellite P30 shuts down after some mins

I have a Satellite P30 which is several months old. already I have had to restore the system after a crash and now the laptop powers down after 10 or 15 mins use. It doesn't seem to get excessively hot. has anyone had a similar experince and how did you resolve it.
[Edited by: admin on 26-Nov-05 08:29]

I have the exact same problem, and i think it might be dust in the cooling system, but i cant find any dokumentation on how to open up the computer to clean it. So if someone know how to split an P30....

  • Satellite P30 - DVD problems UJ-830s - You cannot copy or move the files

    Hi
Just had to re-install everything using the Toshiba Recovery disk image.
DVD drive did not work at all, giving always a drive not connected warning!
Then after 2 days and reinstall of OLD drives it started to work.
Now, I cannot move a file by copying/pasting and it does not even appears on the SEND to list!
I can read no problem, I can write using Power to go, but I cannot write by simply moving a file to it! I will try InCD again and hope it works this time.
Any idea? I checked the uptade files and firmware, but they are not for this drive, apparently the UJ-830 nearly does not exist online at all! Toshiba must have got rid of them with all their Satellite (not the Pro) P30 version.
    It is a Mat****a (Matsu****a - i.e. Panasonic!) UJ-830s
Does anyone know were to find the Satellite P30 internal hardware manual, so I can do the proper upgrade myself! I am an Electronics Technician and like to do things properly.
This DVD drive, I think is the only let down on this very nice Laptop.
    Thanks

    Hi
You have suggested that you can read with no problems and writing works also by using the Power to go. I assume power to go is burning software.
In this case I think the drive is ok.
I think if you want to write the files on the CD by using the simply file moving you have to enable the Windows record function.
Go to the drive properties (right click) and select the ?recording? tab.
There you should check the options.

  • Vertical dashed lines and bad shading on Satellite P30-109

    Hi
    Sorry for my bad English,
I have a TFT problem on my Satellite P30-109.
Regular vertical dashed lines and bad shading.
I have formatted the hard-disk with the recover-disk but nothing changed.
An irregular visualization is present while windows is starting.
    What can it be?
Have you any suggestion? I have to discard my PC?
    Thanks for your help.
    Stefano

Can you connect your Laptop to an external screen?
If the lines will appear there too, then it might be a broken Graphics card.
If there are no lines on your externel screen, then your TFT screen might need replacement.
Either way, it'll need service from a Toshiba service center.
Is it more like this: http://www.laptoprepairguy.com/wp-images/reddish-screen.jpg
    or like this? http://www.laptoprepairguy.com/wp-images/laptop-screen-vertical-lines.jpg

  • Satellite P30: Power Saving does not work properly

    Hello
I have a Toshiba Satellite P30 (with Windows XP) and I'm having problems with my Power Saving mode. When I use it for games and other high power applications it gets really hot on the edge of the moitor and shuts down.
It is been doing this for the last month or so. Before that there was absolutelly no problem. I've checked the TPSTrace file and got this error message:
A Fatal error has occurred. This program will be terminated. code: 0x0 Location:MainFrm.cpp(1317)
I don not know what to do with it and how to solve the problem. Any ideas?

    Hi Thomas
It is not easy to give you any precise diagnostic but in my opinion your notebook is not hot because of power saver. Satellite P30 is pretty old notebook and maybe you should clean up your notebook.
    Have you done this before?
This error seems to be serious and what you can do is to remove preinstalled power saver and after restart try to install it again.
Just for info: power saver tool is very useful but definitely not so important and your system can work well without it. Because of that I presume hot notebook is because of dust inside. With more CPU and graphic card activity hardware will be hot and it must be cooled properly. If the cooling grill is not clean this can not happen. at the beginning notebook will be hot but one day it will probably switch off without any warning.
At first step try to clean your notebook and remove all dust under cooling grill.

  • Cannot upgrade BIOS on Satellite P30-145

    Hi anyone,
just inherited a P30-145 notebook, cannot upgrade the bios. When I run the file, I get the message" bios upgrade rom wrong size!"and then the installer shuts off. How do I upgrade? I'm doing everything right according to the website.
Just one thing, the original restore disk was not available, so I installed a standard XP and upgraded drivers as necessary from the Toshiba site.

    Hi
Try the BIOS 1.40 from the Toshiba US driver page:
    http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/downloadDetail.jsp?soid=1236378&pf=true
The BIOS is for Satellite P30 PSP30U. It the same series like the European notebook series PSP30E.
Download the exe file and save it on desktop. Then create an folder and unzip the sp35v14.exe file to this new created folder.
Now go to this folder and inside this folder you will find some files.
Read the readme.txt file to get full instruction how to update the BIOS.

  • Satellite P30-133 Crashing due to overheating

I have a P30-133 which regularly overheats and crashes. It will not operate at all on a flat surface, it needs to be away from any surface to give the fans a chance to cool it down enough. Is this a known problem with the P30-133 and, if so, is there any way of resolving it?
I also notice that my battery does not charge up. Could these problems be related?

    Hello
I don't want to speculate about known problems but what I know is that Satellite P30 is very old notebook model. It must be about 6 years old. If your notebook was never cleaned I can imagine the cooling system is full of dust.
I have 4 years old notebook and I cleaned it up already 2 times. You cannot imagine how many dust I found inside.
What I can imagine is that, after so long time, the small gum feet at the bottom are much thin now and there is no enough space between you notebook and the desk. What I do is to set back part of the notebook to two music CDs boxes and then there is more space and notebook can be cooled down much better.
Think about these two things. Maybe it will help you.

  • Satellite P30-145: drive will not recognise dual layer DVDs

I have a Satellite P30-145 with a DVD SupermultiDL drive. When I first got the PC I could write dual layer DVDs without any problems. Now the drive will not recognise dual layer DVDs at all. Even ones from the same box that worked fine previously. I'm using Verbatim Double Layer DVD+R 2.4x discs.
After much searching on the internet I downloaded and ran DVDInfoPro. This application reported that the drive did not support DVD+RW DL. Very strange!!
Can anyone help? The drive is a Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ-831S.

    Hi Lan
This drive is definitely DL one but I can just imagine that drive is defective and can not calibrate lens in the right position. This notebook model is more that two years old and if you have used this drive intensively I can really imagine that DL function is defective.
What you can do is to clean the lens and see it this will help.

  • Satellite P750 - Stops resonding after waking from hibernate mode

Can any one help, I recenty bought a Satellite P750 with an i7 processor it has 4GB RAM. I have been experencing problems since buying it. It just seems to stop responding the round icon is spinning showing its thinking but I can wait for 10-15minutes and there is no change. This problem occurs sporaticly and some times occurs when loading up new programs. The problem occurs nearly all the time if it has entered hybernation and when I awaken it with mouse it starts up but when I to connect to the net for example it will bring up the internet explorer page and the round icon will be spinning and it will stay like this for ages until I am forced to shut it down with the on and off button. When I have this problem I have tryed using CTRL ALT DEL to open up task manager but task manager will not respond.
Has anyone had the same problem and is there a solution. Note when I turn of the HDD protection mode the probem seems to happen less frequenty but still occurs.

    > Note when I turn of the HDD protection mode the problem seems to happen less frequently but still occurs.
Very interesting Did you check your HDD for some errors?
I would recommend doing this. Try the tool called Drive Fitness Test. You can google in order to download this... its freeware so you can use it for free.
I think its good idea to check the HDD because faulty HDD could cause such issues too.
By the way; did you try to reinstall the OS again and to check if this issue would be fixed then? HDD recovery could be useful. It sets the notebook back to factory settings.
I think its worth a check.

  • Can i install a wireless card in my Satellite P30-141 's wireless bay?

The P30-141 doesn't come with wireless functionality and i can't track any wireless antennae cables which should reside within the top casing of the machine, but i'd like to know if it's possible to undertake my own installation of a toshiba wireless card? Would anyone out there know of a specific wireless card model / part number which could be used to do this? I'm quiet happy to tinker around inside the machine as it's four years past the warranty i believe and i've already replaced the LCD once, so i'm pretty familiar with the guts of it, just can't find any documentation on getting this component into this particular machine.
Any advice would be a great help!

    Hi Simon,
Sure if you have the relevant PC slot inside, i'm checking a P30 - 131 (which i can't even find in the db here, think its foreign spec but a uk board) for one after telling my client it was easy. If you peek under the keyboard you can see a wire trench running from where the screen cable comes in to the main body. If its empty you need to fit the antenna cable, if present awesome just put in the relevant wireless card and clip on the antenna plugs. If the wires aren't present, simples.
They're quite cheap on everyones favourite auction site, you just need to get in under the screen bezel/surround and lay them down. They lay around the screen itself under the bezel. You'll find simple pictorials not necessarily for your specific laptop but they are mostly the same. Then bnring them through and lay them through the trench under the keyboard and clip into the wireless card. Well obviously you now have to set up the relevant drivers, curse a few times as it doesn't connect, wonder furiously at what is going wrong and then bing it'll suddenly connect although you've done nothing different over the past couple of days.......... The biggest issue you'll find is not to damage your bezel.
Anyway good luck, i'm gonna now try to work out if this model (see above) will do this.
