My saved imovie project freezes on playback

This is very annoying,
I have been making i movie projects that are a mixture of short video clips and also photographs. I make the photos into slideshows in i movie and intersperse these with the short video clilps.
Anyway I have shared/saved the movie to quicktime and it freezes during playback but the audio keeps on going.
Here is the process I go through to save my movie...
Share>Quicktime>Expert Settings>Movie to QuickTime Movie.
When ever I have a mixture of photos and short videos it never saves without freeaing on playback. However I can save successfully to MPEG-4 and AVI but I am not satisfied with the quality of these and would like to save as a QuickTime movie as I want to be able to put it on a DVD.
I am exasperated!
I don't think it is anything to do with space on my hard drive as there is plenty and this was happening even when my mac was brand new!
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Thanks for your help Richard. I have exported the movie to idvd and that works, the thing is I want to be able to add other movies from i movie into the same dvd.
For example if I export my movie (of pics and videos) to idvd then try to export another it gets sent to a new idvd project and no the one I had previously exported to.
Am I making sense?
Maybe I am being stupid and there IS a simple way around this.
I tried making the photo slideshows in i photo then adding them to the movie project but the same problem arises - if I save it as a quicktime movie it freezes on playback.

  • IMovie video freezes during playback; transitions not working

I'm nearing the end of making a video in iMovie. I have several clips, transitions, and music added. On some spots, the video playback stops, while the music continues; one or two clips later the video picks up again. I've deleted that section of video and re-inserted a similar clip only to have the same problem. Additionally, the transition into that particular clip doesn't work. When i play the raw video clip, it works just fine. I don't understand. Someone have a clue what's going on?

You might be able to narrow down which item is causing the problem and deleting it. First create a duplicate project:
Click the Project Library button and highlight the name of your project by click on it just once so that it will be colored in blue.
Go to File Menu > Duplicate Project, iMovie will create a duplicate with a number added to the end of the name
Open the Duplicate project and try deleting a picture, or transition or video clip where the video freezes or even just before the point where it freezes.
Playback the movie and see if it reacts differently.
Just try one thing at time and you might discover it's one item in the Project timeline that's causing the problem. Once you find the source of the problem, you can try replacing it or just leave it out until you finish the project and export it. Sometimes it's difficult to figure out how something got corrupted and subsequently how to ressurect it.

  • Can Quicktime Updates interfere with saved iMovie projects?

    Hello.
I'm just about to do an update to the latest Quicktime and I wondered if these updates can cause any problems with iMovie projects that have been made and saved on my computer with older Quicktime versions?
    Thanks
    Rich

    Thanks Bengt,
But how about after a project is fully completed and burned to DVD but still remaining stored on the computer as a final iMovie project. In case you want to burn it again or just play it on the computer, will that original iMovie on the computer be confused by a newer Quicktime Update? I have all mine still saved as both disc images and also the original project. I know a disc image will not be affected but I was curious about the original project?

  • Saving imovie projects in itunes

I've created an imovie project from the app on my ipad2 and saved it in itunes but now my macbookpro won't open it in imovie from the itunes account. How can I use the project saved in itunes on other devices? Is there a way to burn a dvd of the project from the macbook pro?

iMovie projects are actually "packages". These packages appear as if they are one single document, but in fact they're more like a folder. If you right-click or control-click on an iMovie project, you'll see an option to "show package contents". Then, inside the project you'll see all the individual files. Would you want to browse through the individual files in that folder with Front Row? Probably not. All of the organization and editing you've done in iMovie is not reflected in the individual files there. While this organization method works for iMovie, it doesn't really help Front Row. To play music, Front Row opens iTunes in the background. To play movies/videos, Front Row plays the files through QuickTime. It might be nice to have an option to view iMovie projects by having iMovie open in the background. You might send Apple some Mac OS X feedback about that option:

  • Saving iMove projects for later edit by PC users

I've been converting a lot of VHS tapes to DVD for friends and family using iMovie and iDVD. Lately, I've been getting asked if I can simply hand over the digitized files to them for editing on their computers with their video editing software. What's the best way to save an iMovie project to disc for people with PCs (or Macs) so that they can edit and create their own DVD?

As Karsten said, the most foolproof method is to give them tape.
I don't know what kind of video files PC editing apps can import. Looking from the Mac side, a DV-stream (.dv) would be the most convenient format because iMovie can readily export it. The downside is that all scenes would be stuffed in a single file (unless the user exported each scene separately) and it would be up to the PC app/user to re-split the scenes into clips.
Another tempting format would be a DV-encoded .avi. But then you should remember that due to a bug in iMovie HD, it can't properly export it.
    http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/~shmhav/iMovieHD_6_bugs.html#expertsettings
So you should then use a workaround and use apps like MPEG Streamclip to export the iMovie project as a DV-AVI.
    http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/~shmhav/SVCDon_a_Macintosh.html#imovie_3rdparty
The latest MPEG Streamclip beta has a Save as... -command which AFAIK should wrap a .dv file as DV-AVI (choose AVI from the pop-up).
...but as I said, I don't know how the PC apps handle these formats.

  • My DVD imports into iMovie keep freezing in playback????

    Hi there-
I have imported a few DVDs into iMovie using Aimersoft DVD Ripper's full purchased version. They were working fine in playback mode, both down in the Event library and up in the project I was editing. But all of a sudden, when it gets to the clips chosen from my DVDs, it freezes on the frame before it and just stops. It won't play any video or audio from the DVDs. I converted them to "mp4 for iMovie" with Aimersoft and then dragged them into my events from my Finder window when they were imported to the computer. Am I doing something wrong? It's pretty urgent that I complete this project so any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!
    Thanks!
(I am using iMovie on OS X 10.7.4)

    One suggestion...
Right click (or control click) on one of your Event clips from the DVD and see if it offers to "Optimize Media". That should fix it.

  • Project freezes in playback

I have a simple 50 slide CP7 project with imported PPT slides (linked). Added text buttons for next / back and have 1 quiz slide, a couple of text boxes and 3 roll over captions on 1 slide.  The playback freezes at slide 15 which has only next/back button objects on it. I have not set any project preferences. This is the second time I've built this project.  The first I thought was because I had a cp5 that I convered to cp7 template.  Getting the same thing with a new project using a blank CP7 template. I can send the cptx file to anyone who would like to look at it

Thank you RodWard. I tried most of the suggestions in the document you linked.  I could not figure it out and it happened in different places in the two projects.  I decided it was faster to start again from scratch.  I do suspect it had something to do with the master slides though.  The first two I adjusted the master slides the last I didn't touch any of the master settings and all went well.
The project literally was a simple page turner with very few text boxes and no advanced actions or widgets so who knows.  Thanks again.

  • Saving Captivate project freezes pc

I have a user at the office, when she tries to save a
captivate project (project specs below) it will freeze her machine
(this is not an Export, just a captivate save), Exports seem to
    work just fine.
    Project Specs:
This is an established project that I'm making minor
revisions on. The last project was 231MB, but the one before was
103MB. The size didn't seem to matter much.
Only Captivate locks up. I did wait yesterday after getting a
"No Response" on the program, and it took 27 minutes to finally
    save.
    Slide #: 50-88 slides
    Audio: Yes (on every slide)
    Objects: Graphics (background page
Other special features: Interactive elements that Captivate
offers (transitions & simulation of software)
Let me know if there is any other information that i can
    supply to help with this.

    Hi Accurohealth,
A few things might help with saving this rather large
Captivate file. You don't say whether you are using Captivate 1 or
    2.
    - Make sure the file is residing on the local hard drive
    (C:).
    - Try doing Save As instead of Save. This is good practice to
periodically do - Save As appears to optimize the file's data.
    - If using Captivate 2, open the Library and delete any
    unused items.
    - With a file as large as this one, the Save process can take
a long time, especially after making a lot of modications to the
file. Try waiting it out and see if Captivate finishes saving.
    - You could also try saving more often. If you recently saved
and then closed the file, the next time you open & save it
    usually finishes faster.
    - Some other things that could help: close the Captivate file
immediately after saving, do 'Save As' periodically on the file,
restart Captivate periodically to flush the undo stack and other
items, reboot the machine, and also try defragging the hard drive.
Your file(s) sound like they are typically very large in file
size and slide number. You may find things work more smoothly if
you break large projects like this into two or more linked files.

  • Saved iMovie projects not showing up in iDVD's Media compartment

    Hello Everyone,
I recently created 2 projects in iMovie. After saving them at full quality they are showing up in my Movies folder, however, when I begin an iDVD project neither is showing up in iDVD's Media compartment (under "Custom"). I'm baffled. Can anyone out there shed some light on this? Perhaps I am saving them incorrectly?

Figured it out...Went under "File > Import > Movies" in iDVD. The movies showed up when I did that. Still don't understand why they don't show up under "Media." Everything worked beautifully after that.

  • IMovie project freezes with continuous spinning color wheel

I'm using iMovie 8.0.4. I have been working on a large (3hr) movie project and the last time I tried adding a voiceover, the project froze and the spinning color wheel remains continuously for hours. I had to force quit, and after rebooting and restarting several time, the same thing happens when I try to open this project. I have since tried deleting the preferences file and resetting permissions without success. The program opens OK and I can get some of my other projects to open, but every time I try to open my large project, the color wheel starts spinning. I had made a backup copy of my project file before adding the voiceover, and the same thing happens even if I try to open this old version. Any suggestions on how to fix this project file would be very welcomed.

I have been having almost exactly the same problem with iMovie 8.05, but unfortunately, none of the suggested remedies have helped. Does anyone have a solution to this frustrating dilemma?

  • IMovie Project from External Hard Drive not Opening?

    Please help!!
Fairly new to MACs, iMovie and iDVD, I didn't have a clear understanding of how saving iMovie projects worked. Reading various tutorials, I thought I had a clear understanding of how they work. Apparently not with my recent frustration with iMovie.
I created several iMovie Projects but needed more space in order to make more projects for my internship thus I did what I thought was common sense -- get an external hard drive.
I exported iMovie projects into my user account and from there, dragged the saved projects into an external hard drive and then deleted the iMovie projects from my user account.
However, when I needed to retrieve these projects, I simply turned on my hard drive and clicked on them to open. However, whenever I tried opening them, they wouldn't open. Is it because I didn't export them to the hard drive in the first place?
What I don't understand is why iMovie is not opening or recognizing the saved iMovie projects from the external hard drive when the size and kind clearly indicate that it should open with iMovie automatically.
What is the proper way of saving my iMovie projects and events so that I can always have access to whenever I need to open up an old project or simply edit?

Freeing up space on your Mac hard drive in iMovies ’08.
The application iMovie ‘08 has two main libraries displayed in the iMovie window: Events and Projects. Events are the main imports from your video camera, say. These files are big and you have the option to save them on an external hard drive and so iMovie knows to find them there. Projects are your editing instructions like what clips you want and where. The files are small and you save them on your Mac hard drive. They are NOT the clips only signposts where to find them (in Events on your external hard drive). You can move Projects to your external hard drive as back-up but iMovie will not find them there. If you then delete Projects from your Mac, iMovie can no longer make use of them unless you manually export them back into iMovie from your external hard drive. See Apple Article HT1026 iMovie '08: Moving iMovie footage to another drive (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1026). Here the external hard disk is used for moving Projects from one computer to another and, by implication, back to the source computer.
Sharing the projects to iTunes for syncing with Apple TV creates (publishes) movies that take up the same amount of space on your Mac as the source Projects. You can still burn DVDs in iDVD using the iTunes Movies as your Media so provided you have iMovie Projects backed up on your external hard drive you can delete them from your Mac and just use the iTunes Movies (for Apple TV and iDVD). In addition, publishing iMovie Projects in iTunes for syncing to Apple TV results in these files being duplicated in both Movies/iMovies Sharing/iTunes AND in iTunes/iTunes Music/Movies so delete them from here and get even more GBs back! Tell iTunes in Advanced not to save these iTunes published movies anymore in order to stop further duplication ocurring.

  • Why can't I open my iMovie projects?

    Hello!
I have upgraded to the new iMovie, but I have had this problem before too. So I have an External Hard Drive (It's called "Seagate") that I have saved iMovie projects for a while now because I needed more space on my Mac. But I can't open the projects anymore? I can't even click on them. It just showes me this:
Can anyone help me to understand how to open it? Or is it impossible and the project is gone forever? Please help, I would be so thankfull.

Did you update your iMovie 9 projects from within imovie 10?
    See: http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov902ad0c31
I'm puzzled where your screen shot comes from.   Top left on the iMovie 10 window should display "LIBRARIES", followed by"All Events" and "All Projects".  Below this there should be an entry for each library.

  • IMovie HD freezes when create a new project

We still use iMovie HD 06 in our schools. It freezes everytime when one studnet tried to create a new project. I deleted com.apple.imovie.plist file, but it didn't help. I tried logon with another user, iMoive HD didn't freeze on creating new project. Saved this project to Shared folder and give everyone Read&Write permission. Login back the first student, tried to open the good project, but it still frozen.
They are all AD users, I checked their own ~/Library/Preferences folder, but didn't find any plist file crushed.
    Any idea? Thanks,
