My school has a private, but no public, iTunes U site.

Can I still create a course with iTunes U course creator?

Hello drummerbloke,
The following website is where K-12 school districts, universities, and colleges can enroll in iTunes U to distribute courses and collections of education content that anyone can access:
iTunes U - Public Site Manager Enrollment
Before enrolling, make sure that:
You are applying on behalf of an educational institution or K-12 District.
- iTunes U is a free service available to qualifying K-12 public school districts, and private schools, as well as two- and four-year accredited, degree-granting, public or private colleges and universities.
You have the authority to contractually bind your institution to the terms and conditions of the iTunes U Service Agreement.
- You will be asked for your supervisor's contact information so that this can be verified.
Thanks,
Matt M.

  • Podcast is not updating its episodes on our school iTunes U site, but on general iTunes U site.

One of our podcast is not updating its episodes on our (University of Minnesota) public iTunes U site.
The direct link to the podcast in our iTunes U site is below.

Interestingly, if I visit the podcast by searching it in general iTunes U, the podcast there has all recent episodes updated.
The direct link to the podcast on the general iTuines U site that I got by searching is below.

  • Storage location for shared secret in public itunes u site

I'm trying to set up the Woolamaloo application for our public iTunes U site to do some troubleshooting. We currently use Apple ID based authentication for most things.
I already have our private site set up in this; however, I'm trying to source the shared secret for the public site.
If I'm not mistaken, it used to be stored in a field in the Site Settings page in iTunes U. It is not there any longer.
Was this changed? If so, where can I find the shared secret now?
    Thanks,
    ~David

    Dave,
I think this is the same issue you're having here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1922144&tstart=0
It's the "I need to know my shared secret" thread.

  • One page in my site has 3 columns but when I publish the site it shows up with 2 columns

I set up the site with 2 columns per page, except for one page which has 3 columns. I looks right in iweb, but when I publish the site it still shows up with 2 columns like the other pages...any idea how to correct that?

Clear your browser's cache (Command+Option+E for Safari) and reload the page.
What's the URL of your site so we can examine it first hand?

  • Problem with local class, static private attribute and public method

    Hello SDN,
    Consider the following situation:
    1) I have defined a LOCAL class airplane.
    2) This class has a private static attribute "type table of ref to" airplane (array of airplanes)
    3) A public method should return the private static table attribute
    Problems:
    a) The table cannot be given as an EXPORTING parameter in the method because TYPE TABLE OF... is not supported and I get syntax errors. I also cannot define a dictionary table type because it is a local class.
    b) The table cannot be given as a TABLES parameter in the method because TABLES is not supported in the OO context.
    c) The table cannot be given as an EXPORTING parameter in the method defined as LIKE myStaticAttribute because my method is PUBLIC and my attribute is PRIVATE. ABAP syntax requires that all PUBLIC statements are defined before PRIVATE ones, therefore it cannot find the attribute to reference to with LIKE.
    I see only 2 solutions:
    a) Never ever use local classes and always use global classes so that I might define a dictionary table type of my class which I can then use in my class.
    b) Make the attribute public, but this goes against OO principles, and isn't really an option.
Am I missing anything here, or is this simply overlooked so far?

    Hello Niels
Since your class is local and, thus, only know to the "surrounding" application is does not really make sense to make it public to any other application.
However, if you require to store instances of your local classes in internal tables simply use the most generic reference type possible, i.e. <b>OBJECT</b>.
The following sample report shows how to do that. Furthermore, I believe it also shows that there are <u><b>no </b></u>serious inconsistency in the ABAP language.

  • Public iTunes U versus Private iTunes U

University of Pennsylvania is in the process of rolling out our iTunes U pilot. We have decided to start with the public version of iTunes U, without authenticating through our local servers, so that anyone can view/download data from our iTunes U server space. We decided to launch this way mostly because we're a revenue-generating group and we're looking to use the iTunes U platform as a way to recoup costs, by doing production work for groups like Alumni Relations, Development, et al.
The problem, of course, is that our academic departments and their faculty are pushing us to launch the private version of iTunes U, with local University of Pennsylvania authentication tokens, etc. We're a very small unit (3 people) trying to collaborate with over 20 schools and administrative departments across a very decentralized institution, and I've been charged with getting empirical evidence from participating iTunes U institutions about which interface - the private or the public - is more valuable.
Those of you who run both private and public versions of your site:
    1) Do you administer a private side with a staff; a private side by yourself; a public side with a staff; a public side by yourself; or some combination thereof?
    2) If you have a private side, is it used more than the public side?
    3) Do your private side users and administrators authenticate to the entire site, with free viewing to all files within the private side? Or, do your private side users and administrators authenticate to the course-specific level only?
Thanks to anyone willing to offer advice!

    Mayumi,
Please find my answers below each question:
    1) Do you administer a private side with a staff; a private side by yourself; a public side with a staff; a public side by yourself; or some combination thereof?
I administer both private and public sides. It is not difficult to do so once you have established the authentication parameters. We are currently authenticating through LDAP and have integrated iTunes U with Blackboard. Once a student logs into Blackboard and uses the iTunes plugin, he/she has access only to the classes he/she has signed up for that have an itunes U component and the public areas. iTunes U can also be accesed through our website. If you are a student, you will have access to your classes and the public areas. If you are a "guest" you will only see the public area.
    2) If you have a private side, is it used more than the public side?
Our private side is used as much as there are classes interested in using iTunes. Right now, we have been very successful and students seem to be very happy with the initiatives.
    3) Do your private side users and administrators authenticate to the entire site, with free viewing to all files within the private side? Or, do your private side users and administrators authenticate to the course-specific level only?
No. Our authenticated users only have permission to view content that is relevant to them unless a professors decides to share his or her materials with the rest of the community. We do emphasize in respecting everybodys privacy.
    I hope this helps!

  • ColdFusion 11: allowedextforinclude functionality has changed. But the docs haven't been

    G'day:
I am reposting this from my blog ("ColdFusion 11: allowedextforinclude functionality has changed. But the docs haven't been") at the suggestion of Adobe support:
@dacCfml@ColdFusionCan you post your queries athttp://t.co/8UF4uCajTCfor all cfclient and mobile queries.— Anit Kumar Panda (@anitkumar85)April 29, 2014
This particular question is not regarding <cfclient>, hence posting it on the regular forum, not on the mobile-specific one as Anit suggested. I have edited this in places to remove language that will be deemed inappropriate by the censors here. Changes I have made are in [square brackets]. The forums software here has broken some of the styling, but so be it.
    G'day:
Remember this one: "ColdFusion 11: preventing files from being included? [WTH], Adobe?". I can confirm this verymoderatelyslightly contentious feature has been changed in ColdFusion 11, but the docs have not been updated to reflect the change.
The issue is summarised thus (from the article linked-to above):
[...]out of the box ColdFusion 11 will only allow the inclusion of CFML and HTML files. Why? They cite "for security reasons". Here's a quote (posted in the bugtracker, originally from the pre-release forums):
"Vamseekrishna Manneboina: Yes, this was done as part of a security measure. You can now only include CFM/CFML files by default. You can specify additional extensions via a property called allowedextforinclude in neo-runtime.xml. By default, HTM and HTML file extensions are already added to this list/property, thereby allowing for inclusion of HTM and HTML files too by default."
OK, I disagree there's merit in this, some others agree, others disagree. But... so be it. I actually thought - if I was in a charitable mood - that the people that were "for" this change made a reasonable case for its inclusion, so - whilst not agreeing with them - I was content to just shrug and go "yeah, oh well".
Now this feature is still in the docs: "New in ColdFusion 11 - Restrictions", but this is not the way it now works. Initially I thought it had been removed completely (and I am now in the midst of retooling this article from saying that... as I only worked out what was going on 2/3rds of the way through writing it).
I did a secure install the other day, and one of the first things I tested was this:
    <!---test.cfm---> <cfset message = "before"> <cfoutput> #message#<br> <cfinclude template="code.inc"> <cfset message = "after"> #message#<br> </cfoutput>
    <!--- code.inc ---> <cfset message="within"> <cfoutput> #message#<br> </cfoutput>
And this all runs fine, as one would expect:
    before
    within
    after
Next I checked neo-runtime.xml to see if the settings had been augmented to switch this off by default: but I'm buggered if I can see any reference to it anywhere.
So I then checked ColdFusion Administrator to see if there was any hint of it there, as this was one of the things Adobe said they were going to do in their solution to this. And there it is:
So by default now, anything is allowed. I figured I must have missed the setting in neo-runtime.xml, so changed the setting to "FOOBAR" so I could easily spot it, and there it is down @ /wddxPacket/data/array/*[16]/var[@name="compileextforinclude"] in neo-runtime.xml:
    <var name="compileextforinclude">    <string>FOOBAR</string> </var>
And - having changed it back to something sensible: CFM, then the feature now "works":
    before
    #message#
    after
However this is probably a worse security hole than the one they were trying to fix! It looks OK when looking at the render in the browser, but look at the actual raw mark-up:
    before<br> <cfset message="within"> <cfoutput> #message#<br> </cfoutput> after<br>
We have unparsed CFML source code sent to the browser. This is awful. What if someone switches this on, and doesn't spot one of their old includes which has less-than-trivial CFML in it? It's now publicly accessible. Adobe have created a feature which has the possibility to leak source code to the outside world. How is that a security feature?
Also interesting is that with the super-secure profile installed, this is still off by default? I would have thought it'd be on in this case?
I still don't think this feature has been implemented properly, and it all still points even more to the fact the Adobe ColdFusion bods don't really know what they're doing.
Anyway, I'll nudge Adobe to at least get the docs sorted out.
    Time for work (3min ago)...
    Adam

    Hi Adam,
Regarding "What if someone switches this on, and doesn't spot one of their old includes which has less-than-trivial CFML in it?", yeah I agree that'd be a problem.  Hmm, maybe both this.allowedextforinclude *and* this.compileextforinclude should've been supported (instead of replacing the former w/ the latter as was done)?  Example:
    this.compileextforinclude="cfm,cfml,inc";
    this.allowedextforinclude="cfm,cfml,inc,txt";
That way an exception could be thrown if cf|included file's extension wasn't in the this.allowedextforinclude list.
Perhaps the above could be shortened to:
    this.compileextforinclude="cfm,cfml,inc";
this.allowedextforinclude="txt";//implicitly includes * from this.compileextforinclude (since -compile- implies -allowed-)
    Dunno if that'd be confusing.
    Anyhow, just some thoughts..
    Thanks!,

I plan to loan my iPod Touch to a friend here in the USA for one month to use on his trip to Europe.  How can I keep my iTunes content and my account private, but enable him to create his own iTunes account to use on my iPod Touch?  Also, do I need to de-register my iPod Touch for all of this to happen--and have him register my iPod Touch in his name for that month he is using it in Europe?

    Products Affected
iTunes 7 for Mac, iTunes 7 for Windows, iPod nano, iPod shuffle, iPod mini, iPod, iTunes 8 for >Windows, iTunes 8 for Mac
No mention of the Touch, it works differently from other iPods and has no "disk mode" as such.
I think it can be used as a storage device by using a 3rd party App, search the the App Store for such items.
Photos transferred to your Touch via iTunes will be of severely compromised quality i.e 640x480 pixel resolution and file size around 600-700 kb. These can be retrieved, again using a 3rd party application on your computer, such as [Touch Copy|http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy> but you will not get back original quality images.

I am a teacher and use my personal ipad to teach in my class.  My school has set up a separate itunes account for teachers to download shows for use in class. How do i download from a different itunes account than i use personally?

You sign out of your ID in Settings>iTunes and App Stores>Apple ID, then sign onto the school ID in order to use it. You know your situation better than I do, but when you switch ID's on the iPad and go back and forth in order to download purchases, you run the risk of locking yourself out of one of the ID's for 90 days.

    Hi Jo,
If I'm interpreting this correctly, the Word file downloads correctly, but when you open it in Pages, the link(s) which your instructor has embedded in the Word file are not correctly translated into Pages.
If the link shows the actual address, you should be able to copy that and paste it into the location bar in Safari, press return, and get to the website that way.
An alternate route might be to download one of the open source Office applications, OpenOffice.org, LibreOffice, or NeoOffice. These are written to more closely emulate the behaviours of MS Word than Pages, and may provide better support for links embedded in Word files.

  • Our school has 12 iPads for a Garage Band concert..?

Our school has 12 iPads for a Garage Band concert.  We need to purchase the in-app "expansion" for them to be used properly.  How can we go about doing this without creating 12 Apple ID's for the process, and how do we manage the purchase correctly?
Our district can load them up, but due to purchasing restraints cannot pay for them.  I just need to know the best way to go about getting 12 iPads to all be the same and all have the same unlocked in-app purchase.  The money is not the issue, we have the funds.

One more thing... can you tell me how to stop all of these emails from the support communities.  I turned off all my email notifications in my preferences but my email is blowing up with dozens of emails minutes apart.  Does it take time before turning notifications off works... or am I missing something else?

How many network adapter card do you have of your computer?
Just the one. A Realtek PCIe GBE
Check whether the DNS is the correct one you had deployed
Yes, DNS is set to the 2k8 server IP as primary, and the secondary is OpenDNS.
and update the group policy by using this command ”gpupdate /force”.
Done, didn't appear to log any changes.
Check the registry key at  “HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Group Policy\History\NetworkName”
The NetworkName should be the domain name, when you get this done you will get a domain network profile, then restart your computer.

  • Public vs. Private iTunes U Site

Can someone please correct or confirm my interpretations?
    1. The iTunes U Private and Public sites are totally un-linked as far as content?  The content copy was one time, all other files will have to be uploaded to each location separately?
    2. The access role All@urn:mace:itunesu.com... is now non-functional in iTunes U private site?
    3. iTunes U private site will no longer generate RSS feeds of content?
Thanks for any insight you can add.

To add content to your site you must create collections containing the course content, series information, or items you want to share with your users.
    To add a collection:
Click Collections at the top of iTunes U Public Site Manager.
    Click the Add button.
Choose one of the following from the pop-up menu:iTunes U Public Site Manager adds the new collection to the collections manager page.
Provider-Hosted Feed. Choose Provider-Hosted Feed to add a new collection from a feed URL hosted on your servers, type the feed URL, and then click Add. For example, http://www.example.com/rss/provider-hosted-collection.rss.
Apple-Hosted Feed. Choose Apple-Hosted Feed, if available, to add and edit a new collection from a new RSS feed hosted on Apple's servers, click Add, and then use the feed editor to add channel and item details and upload content.
Copy from Original iTunes U Site. Choose “Copy from Original iTunes U Site” to add a new collection by copying a group from your original iTunes U site, type the group URL, and then click Add. To copy a group from your original iTunes U site, navigate to the group, Control-click the group's tab, choose Copy Link, and then paste the link in the Group URL field. You must be an administrator to use "Copy from Original iTunes U Site". You cannot use "Copy from Original iTunes U Site" to add a feed course from your original iTunes U site.Once you publish your site, you can no longer use "Copy from Original iTunes U Site" to add a collection in iTunes U Public Site Manager.
If you add, remove, or hide a collection or update an iTunes U Public Site Manager page, you must publish your site for the changes to appear in iTunes U in the iTunes Store. Publishing changes can take up to 24 hours to appear in the iTunes Store.
