My school's open Wi-Fi network...

I'm concerned about the security of my school's wi-fi, seeing as it is open unsecured. Is there any possible way I could securely connect (with encryption) to an open network such as this? I've e-mailed the school's network administrator about this, but I haven't received a response yet. When I get a response, I plan on posting it, because I want to be sure that whatever method he prescribes actually provides me with real security.
Also, I read somewhere that WPA is not secure enough and I should be using something called WPA2 instead. Then I read somewhere else that only certain wi-fi cards supported this protocol. Does my built-in AirPort Extreme support WPA2?

So, I'm a little confused as to what exactly your situation is. Are you just wanting to affiliate your computer onto their open network and concerned that their Wi-Fi is open? Then that is what your Mac's built-in firewall is for (Sys Prefs Sharing, Services and Firewall panels). Turn the firewall on and make sure that nothing has a checkmark in its checkbox. The big issue for you is keeping uninvited/unexpected connection requests out of your computer. Firewall turned on and no "services" enabled will do that. If you initiate a connection (like going to a web page), then inbound traffic is not uninvited/unexpected, and the OS takes care of the details of letting responses back in. Or are you wanting to provide your own services, like hosting your own website on your computer? Then there are some additional precautions that you should take. That's why I'm a little confused about precisely what is your situation.
Next point: Do you have your own wireless access point that is driving your WPA2 question? Or are you just affiliating to one (the school's)? The type of over-the-air channel encryption is determined by the wireless access point to which you are attempting to affiliate -- the client (you) doesn't get to choose it. If the access point supports WPA2, and is using it, then it would show up as the type of protocol when you go to configure it in your SysPrefs preferred wireless networks.
The thing about WEP, WPA, WPA2, and so forth, they are there to keep people (like your cheap neighbor at home who won't pay for his own broadband service and would prefer to usurp your bandwidth instead) that are not authorized to use the wireless network out, or to keep them from entering a network from inside/behind a firewall. If they don't care who uses the wireless, and if the access points are outside any firewalls of computers that they want to protect, then no big deal.
If you are concerned about doing on-line banking over this network, well, that should be okay because presumably your bank's website is https://www.megabank.com so that traffic is encrypted. Similarly, in Mail.app, if your mail provider told you to check the "Use SSL" boxes when you were configuring your mail account, you're okay.

In the Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ folder delete the following:
    com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    NetworkInterfaces.plist
    preferences.plist
    com.apple.nat.plist
You will have to re-configure all your network settings since deleting.

You are as far as you can be with the original iPad; only iPad 2 and greater will update to 7+

  • Can you open a closed network?

I can no longer access the secure wi fi network set up on my Mac Pro, and must use  the (insecure) network that came with my router. The regular network name doesn't show as an available network, but I know it is still there because both the name and security type appear  when I click "advanced" on System Preferences/Network. I have apparently changed my regular network to "closed" by accident.
I have tried unsuccessfully to sign in as "other network", providing security type and passwork, but it doesn't work.
I need a way to open this closed network. Is this possible?  How?
If it is impossible, what must I do to start over?

I have apparently changed my regular network to "closed" by accident.
Or the network is no longer available, temporarly shut down, or you were purposely locked out.  Contact the network admin.

  • IPhone 4S with iOS 6 can't connect to open Wi-Fi network on HP/H3C WX5004 controller

After upgrading from iOS 5.1.1 to iOS 6, iPhone 4S devices can no longer connect to an open wi-fi network on our campus.
We have a controller based WLAN from HP/H3C managed by a WX5004 controller with AP models WA2620-AGN and WA2620E-AGN.
Symptom: In the Wi-Fi dialog on the iPhone, out open campus network with SSID "CampusUniPassau" is displayed. After tapping this SSID, the iPhone tries to connect for a few seconds and then displays the error message 'Unable to join the network "CampusUniPassau'.
Our WLAN controller logs the following errors:
    *Sep 21 08:40:46:336 2012 ac1 WMAC/7/ERROR : Invalid Extended Capabilities IE length (4).
    *Sep 21 08:40:46:336 2012 ac1 WMAC/7/ERROR :  Error while processing information elements

With iOS 5.1.1, all worked well, so this should be an iOS 6 bug. Are there any workarounds until Apple releases a bug fix?
Thanks in advance for any advice,
       Christian

    HI,
i am affected by this problem myself. We are also using the H3C WX5004 with WA2620AGN accesspoints.
Today I got update from H3C and got a new firmware to download.
    HEre is the description:
The issue of the extended capabilities should be address in 5.20R2308P07  ftp  link below for the WX5004
The issue was as described below :
    (1)           R2308P06 does not support Extended Capabilities (IE) which is contained in association request from the IPAD 3 IOS6, as below. This has been fixed by  the R2308P07 code.

Some users with various Wi-Fi connection problems have reported that they were given the following instructions by Apple Support, sometimes with success. I can't vouch for this procedure myself. After completing the procedure, you'll have to recreate all your settings in the Network preference pane. Make sure you know how to do that before you begin. Taking screenshots of the preference pane may be helpful.
    Step 1
    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "SystemConfiguration" selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator password.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    Step 2
    Reset the System Management Controller

If my network connection goes out briefly due to a problem at my ISP, FireFox immediately opens a "diagnose network problems" page. This is particularly annoying when I don't even have FireFox or any other software open. Ideally, I do NOT want FireFox to even check if my Network is connected. How can I stop this?

  • Issues Opening Files in Network Share

    Hello,
I'm hoping someone can help me with this issue I'm having,
I use a Windows 7 desktop at my office and I have a Network Share on a Windows 2008 Server where I save all my documents and file I work on each day.
I use my Macbook Air when I'm working at my other office and when I'm traveling.
    My issue is this,
I setup and able to connect to my Network Share and see all my folders and files. Although if I try to open a file it tells me it can't find the file even though I used Finder to browse right to the file and double clicked on the file. I can copy the file locally to my MacBook, work on the file and then copy it back to the Network Share.
From me testing different things this is what I have found,
It's only Word, Excel and Powerpoint documents that don't open from the Network Share. - I do have Microsoft Office 2011 Mac installed
TXT & PDF Files open just fine from the Network Share.
I doesn't matter if it's Word, Excel or Powerpoint files created on my Windows 7 desktop or my Macbook Air, once it's moved to Network Share I can't open it.
This is where it gets really confusing, other Network Shares I can open the Excel & Word files right from the Network Share, it's just my personal Network Share and I put in the right username and password for my Network Share since I can open the TXT & PDF files just fine.
I'd appricate any help with this issue.
    Thanks in advanced - Jonathan

I have the same problem and i'm not the only one @ my office. seems that everybody who uses mac in our office has the same problem. So could anybody give any advice how to solve this problem? Do we need to configure shared folders on server or just our macs?

  • FYI: 1 possible solution and cause to Access Denied on opening PDF on network shares with Reader XI

    FYI
    Hi.
Updated in May to another release of Reader XI.
Got the problem stated in the titled of this post - with access denied for PDF on network shares.
    Reason:
Long time error in Adobe Reader with shares and thumbnails causes me to use the thumbnail and preview fix done by a third party. Has worked for years - while Adobe has not seemed to care about fixing this problem ...
That's the real reason ...having to use an almost out-dated fix now.
However, if using the thumbnail and preview fix:
Then its legacy interaction with Adobe Rader is probably the cause of this error - reinstall (reregister) the preview and thumbnail fix - and the problem will go away.
... and Adobe Reader XI is back up with protected mode working - on Network shares ... with the thumbnails there.
Now if anybody is reading this from the Adobe staff ... please add the thumbnail and previews to Adobe Reader?
May you forgot this did not work on shares ... like forgot "forever" ... and meanwhile users got a third party fix they reinstall everytime from the age of Adobe Reader bloatware creating the FoxIt Reader spinoff.
Since then Reader has come a long way in tearms of realibility ... however, the missing thumbnail and preview on shares and x64 platform needs to be fixed.
Then these "cannot" open PDF on Network shares reports may go away ...?

If you have any bugs to report, this is where to do it: https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform

  • Indesign files won't open over a network

I have just copied my entire work folder from a 17" iMac Core Duo to a 20" iMac Core Duo. When I attempt to open any InDesign files over the network from one machine to the other I get the following message.
"Cannot open the document "xxxxxxx". You may not have permission or the document may be open already. For mutli-user access, close the file and then lock it using thee File > Get Info command in the Finder."
All my other files open correctly - Quark, Photoshop, Illustrator etc. I have read and write permissions for the entire work folder, but only the InDesign files wont open over the network. The files will open perfectly on the local machine, but not over the network.
I have managed to find a similar post on Adobe's InDesign User Forum, but not a satisfactory solution.
I have never had this problem before, I've been using fileservers for years with no problems
    Please can anyone help.
    Thanks

Well, I don't have InDesign or I'd try Sharepoints to see if it could help the situation, dunno...
    http://www.hornware.com/sharepoints/
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1358566&#1358566
"Adobe states that PhotoShop CS2 does not work in a network environment. Many have seen this issue with CS2 and 10.4 working in a client/server environment. This does not seem to be an issue on the Windows/PC side. The only work around at the moment is to save the file on the local drive and then copy it over to client home folder."
I think part of it is that Apple has changed the method of locking files in OSX more than once.

  • Can't open file "/private/Network/Servers...

Sometimes in an Active Directory environment....
    We open file error
    Can't open file "/private/Network/Servers/xxx-fs01.mycompany.edu/HomeXXX$/Students/YOG15/UserNa me/DOCUMENTS/filename.key"
This happens when using the recent file/items from within Safari.

Its a serious problem and many people are facing the same issue on both locked and factory unlocked phones.
I wonder when Apple will address to this issue. After all it is losing all its reputation!
See this thread, many users are encountering the same issue:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3425746?start=75&tstart=0
I believe its a software issue and could be solved asap Apple fixes it!

  • Since upgrading to OS 8.0.2 my ipad2 freezes, slows down, safari takes forever to open, the celluar network goes to No Service and the only way to fix it is to reboot it and this takes longer than before.  Has Microsoft taken over Apple software?

SInce upgrading to OS 8.0.2 my ipad 2 freezes, slows down, safari takes forever to open pages, cellular network goes to No Service requiring a reboot (and this takes longer than before), in summary, I now have a fancy paperweight, i used to love my ipad.  I feel as if Microsoft has taken charge of the Apple Software Division.

Sorry if someone sees this post in a different thread; Just want to get some additional exposure.. Who knows, maybe someone from Apple will take note..
The glitchy, unresponsive, slow and outright crashes are something you would expect in a less superior product.  I paid what I consider a premium because of the perceived integrity of the company and quality of their products. I am not going to go as far to say Apple ***** and so do their products; but they have to to a better job of acknowledging problems and providing recourse.  Right now, it "feels" like they don't care about existing customers.  I am not sure of the exact #'s, but I believe products like the Ipad2 represent a significant population of their existing Ipad product base.
So what is my specific rant; If Apple is going to take a long time, or worst, NOT fix the problems introduced in IOS 8 for IPAD  2, give us the option of going back to IOS 7.  I would say most everyone was extremely happy with their product running under that OS and would migrate back in a heartbeat.  By blocking this option, it feels like Apple is saying that the only recourse is to live with crappy performance, wait forever without any real news, or throw away your Ipad 2 and buy a newer model.  Right now this is 100% completely unacceptable, and I, as will thousands of others, will watch how this unfolds when we do buy new products.  Most technology products only have short, finite lifespan and I would think it is at very least very important to Apple to retain customer base in a highly competitive marketplace.  I'm done...

  • If i got my iPhone 4 from the Apple store (UK) will it be open on all networks or will i need a unlock code from Apple!

will an iphone 4 be open to all networks if purchased from the applestore (uk) or will i have to get a code from apple or my current provider !

If the Apple Store sells unlocked iphone then it will be unlocked.
If they don't, then it won't.
Ask them if they sell unlocked iphones.  If they do, then buy one.
