It cracked by touching the screen to close it shut. It wasn't dropped or handled roughly. Its been 1.5 yrs since purchase.

The Apple warranty only covers manufacturing-related defects. Closing the lid with sufficient force to crack the screen would constitute "rough" handling.

A broken screen is an accident but it is not abuse. However, if the owner attempts a repair him/herself, that's abuse. Although unrelated to the damage, if the device has been jailbroken, that's also abuse.

I recieved an iPad mini as gift this past spring (2013). I tried to upate my iPad to the new iOS 7.0.4 software. It seemed work fine, but when it reboted it got stuck on the connect to itunes screen. I've connected my iPad to itunes and it does not recognize it. When I connected my iPhone 5s to itunes it recognized it immediately. FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
1. Turn off iPad
2. Turn on computer and launch iTune (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port. Do not release button until you see picture of iTune and plug (very important)
5. Release Home button.
ON COMPUTER
6. iTune has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTune.
7. Select "Restore iPad"...
Note: Data will be lost

Your warranty is cancelled by damaging your iPhone unless you pay Apple for a replacement, and then you get only 90 days, I believe. So going third-party probably doesn't hurt you that much.
As to getting something for free or a reduced price just because you bought a lot of products, that's totally unrealistic. No one does that, not when the problem wasn't the company's fault. I've purchased mutilple Hyundai cars, but I wouldn't expect them to discount a windshield replacement if I drove the car into a building. If this iPod failed on it's own multiple times, then I'd agree that you were owed something. But expecting free or discounted stuff because of your own mistake is totally different and unjustified.
'nuff said on the subject. Again, feel free to purchase from any other company you feel would treat you better.

1) Buy a replecement apple will give you half off on a new one if you give them the old one
2) check the receipt and if its under a year old call the store you got it at (if you got it at an apple store you can try but dont get your hopes up)
