My screen flickers/fades to black

Screen flickers, sometimes fades to black screen completely, have to hold down power/home button at same time for a few seconds until Apple icon shows back up and sometime it doesn't. Any solutions to this??

First I would buy the correct charger from your local Apple Store or Apple reseller. If that doesn't solve the problem and if the machine is covered by warranty or AppleCare (yes Apple warranties are transferable) make an appointment at your local Apple Store and take it in.
Good luck,
Roger

Have an older white MacBook that when I boot up, screen flickers and goes black, MacBook does power on.
    Any suggestions?

I am seing a similar issue with a 13" White MacBook.
Powers on ... chimes ... then screen goes blank as if the machine has gone to sleep. Hitting the Return key or the power button wakes it again, but only for two seconds ... and repeat!

  • Screen flickered, then went black (faint windows can still be seen)

i was just working on my powerbook and my screen flickered on and off and turned black. the best way to describe this is like what a lightbulb does right before it blows out. what is wrong?! i am trying to type this as fast as i can before it starts doing it again. is my LCD frying?

Might be bad Power Management Unit settings - following instructions to reset PMU.
Otherwise, there are 3 likely hardware related causes:
    1. Failing LCD Display backlight - needs replacement
    2. Broken/Intermittent ribbon connection - needs soldering and/or replacement
    3. Failing LCD backlight Inverter - needs soldering and/or repalcement
For all 3 of these screen would require service for technician....call Apple if you have warranty.

  • My display starts up with a black screen or fades to black after being on.

So just recently when I would turn my mac on, it starts up with just a black screen. The computer is on just no display. Sometimes it will take multiple times of restarting the computer to get the display to come on. When the display is finally on and working fine I found out that if I touch the top of the iMac near the iSight the screen will then slowly fade to black. And of course, the only fix is to restart. Anyone have a similar problem? Unfortunately I didn't purchase the extended warranty and my computer is one month past the 1 year mark. Thank you.

Restart the computer with the Option, Command, P, and R keys held down, and release them when you hear the second startup chime; this clears a setting which causes it to start up into verbose mode each time.

  • Screen flickers, occasionally goes black

    Hello all,
iBook g4 bought refurb - 2-3 years ago...
Occasionally the screen is flickering and I have had two occasions where the screen just went black but I could still see the desktop. Had to force restart. I have had 2 times where it was looking for the startup folder after restart as well.
Looks like it might be time for a new laptop??? I have had no other problems.
Haven't noticed the fan running a lot even with several big programs open either.
Searched flicker on this forum and didn't get much.
    thanks,
    Al

Tried to delete this post since it is doubled but no luck.

Richard, I don't think it freezes when it GOES BLACK. I have had freezes at other times but when it goes black I can see my cursor move - fairly certain.
One difference is that my fan doesn't run alot - in fact I can't remember the last time it ran- if it isn't running at all then that should be a big clue.
    have not tried external display....
    my projector is broken...
can I use my iMac as external display.
I have the mini vga that came with the ibook.
    will check that other thread.
    thanks,
    Al

  • Why is my 2007 HP V17 monitor screen flickering and going black?

I have an old  2007 HP V17 monitor attached with a VGA cable to an early 2008 Macbook running on OS 10.6.8 software  via a  DVI- mini connector (this is also my desktop computer).
About 6 months ago, the HP display started going white and sometimes gray for a few seconds before the image would return, and a couple of times I had to unplug it and restart the Macbook before it came back.  I followed Apple's instructions for testing whether the problem was in the computer  (= resetting the system by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC), but the computer tested okay.  I then purchased a new VGA cable and DVI-mini connector, but the problem persisted.
Today the HP screen suddenly went black (first time going black) and stayed black.   The power button stayed lit and if I pressed the Volume or Auto buttons, the "Volume" etc. message boxes did appear, so the device's backlight is apparently working and not burnt out (unless the backlight has nothing to do with the message boxes showing up, which for all I know may be the case).  However, the Desktop showed up only on the Macbook.
I checked all the connections, removed the DVI connector and plugged it back into the Macbook several times, but the HP screen stayed black, so I removed the DVI connector in order to type this message on the Macbook.  Then, as I was writing this, I decided to plug it back into the Macbook one more time--and sure enough, the display is back!
I love this monitor, which is the perfect size and ergonomic height for my setup, so I'd hate to have to replace it.  Can anyone tell me
Given the information above, what's the probable reason for the flickering and going to black?  If it's the computer, what could it be?  Can I solve this problem myself? (See above; I couldn't find any other ways to test the computer in the Apple articles database.)
If not, could a monitor this old  be repaired?
If so, how much would repairing it cost, since buying a new monitor that I probably wouldn't like as much would cost upwards of $300?
Thanks so much for any advice out there!

I understand that your HP V17 Monitor has gone black and is not displaying anything. I am providing you with some steps for you to try below:
Step 1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the monitor and the wall
Step 2. Hold the power button down for at least one minute
Step 3. Plug the power cord back into the monitor and then into the wall outlet (not a power bar or surge protector)
Step 4. Press the Menu button on the monitor
Step 5. Navigate to the Factory Reset option and select it
If the issue persists after this you can try the monitor on another computer to see if it continues. If it does it appears to be a physical issue and I think it would be best if you contact HP Technical Support for repair options.

  • T 30 Screen flickered now just black

We pulled our old T30 which was retired to the closet for a couple years because we couldn't remember what was wrong with it.  Turned it on and it booted up immediately.  The screen started flickering and we remembered why we abandoned it.  I searched the net and found a driver download which we installed on the T30.  That fixed the flickering for about an hour.  Then the flickering started again so we left the project till the next day.  All other functions on the computer worked except for the flickering
Next day we tried to turn the computer on.  All the lights go on but the screen is black.  The battery light with the plus sign stays on as well as the Z light. My husband started hitting all the F type buttons but we can't get the screen to turn on.
If we can fix this issue affordably, we would like to give this computer to a friend who has lost her job, house and all her belongings.  I have read that this might be an inceptor or LCD malfunction.   Please advise what I might try.  Thank you in advance for your advice.  I hate to just smash the harddrive and sell it on ebay for parts because I know she could sure use it.

External screen works perfectly and unit is totally operational when hooked up to one..  Husband reseated the inverter.  Screen is still black---no image at all.  Does the flickering problem then deteriorating to total black indicate a bad inverter or backlight?  Any other possible problems?
System is operating on XP Pro.  I hate to pull the hard drive and sell it for parts on fleabay when my friend really needs it.

  • Screen flickers then goes black

Hello. Having a problem with the display on our 15" 1.25 G-4. After using it awhile, the screen starts looking like a strobe light then goes to all black. Closing the lid, letting it sleep for a bit waking later will then get it working. I've reset the PMMU, but haven't run the hardware checks because the disks are gone.
    Any thoughts? Hardware? Driver?
    Thanks

I suspect that it could be the inverter board which controls the backlight. I just had mine replaced after similar symptoms.

  • IBook screen flickered then went black

    Hi.
I have a 12" white opaque iBook (running OS 10.2...it was a hand me down, 700 mhz as I recall. Model is A1005) whose screen began to flicker, then went black. It wouldn't restart. After the usual panicking, I tried to restart with Disk Warrior (which was never installed onto that computer)
Next attempt to fix was to start in safe mode. Nothing changed.
I zapped the PRAM and then the screen came back. I backed up whatever I thought I didn't already have backed up. Feeling quite happy, I treated myself to some baked goods, then I shut it down.
Next day, I got only a black screen and then had to force quit by holding the power button down.
I tried 3 times to zap the PRAM, and still have only a black sceen.
Any ideas on what to do besides using the previously happy iBook as a coaster?
    Thanks for any help!

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.

It also sounds like it is possible that it may be having logic board problems. Enough Dual USB G3 iBooks suffered from the logic board problem that Apple began the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program in January of 2004. Do the symptoms look familiar? After leaving it sit overnight, does squeezing the case to the left of the trackpad allow you to start up and work for a bit as long as you keep the pressure on it there? If so, you may want to consider trying the shim fix suggested by John Sawyer here in the Apple Discussions iBook G3 (Dual USB) Forum:
[Y]ou can often fix this yourself by removing the iBook's bottom housing, and placing a shim of any sort, about 1mm to 1.5mm thick, onto the raised square on the bottom shield. I use a Scotch mounting square--you can get them in hardware stores and many grocery stores. When you reinstall the bottom case, it will press against this shim, which will press against the graphics chip, and may allow the chip to come into better contact with the logic board.

  • Gnome: at random times, screen fades to black and stays black

I'm having a strange issue with my gnome based netbook (Aspire One).
Sometimes, the screen will fade to black without any user input. It looks like the screen is powering off and preparing to go to screensaver/blank screen mode, but I cannot unlock it.
Its just the screen, I can go to tty1 (blind), login, and the computer will respond to commands such as shutdown.
I tried turning off the screensaver in Gnome settings + turning off screen blanking in Gnome Power Management, no luck.
Checked all logs, didn't find anything suspicious. Any ideas?

I'm having the same problem, at random times the screen goes black, nothing else changes, I could keep with a conversation on skype. Also sometimes the screen flickers, by the way I'm also using Gnome. I have the impression that this started since the last Kernel update and looking at the logs I found the following:
    In the dmseg.log :
ACPI: I/O resource 0000:00:1f.3 [0x18e0-0x18ff] conflicts with ACPI region SMBI [0x18e0-0x18ef]
ACPI: If an ACPI driver is available for this device, you should use it instead of the native driver
I also noticed that if I close the lid of my netbook and open it again the screen appears again. I would like to find a solution to this problem but I'm not very experienced.
EDIT: I do use an intel card -- 945GME --, and the flickering seems to be from this bug on Intel Cards:

  • Lenovo G360 - Screen fades to black

The laptop screen will fade to black while in windows. The laptop is still on but the screen picture is gone. Its not the battery becuase its a new one. The only thing that brings the screen picture back is after I have put the laptop in the refrigerator for 10+mins. What does that mean? Will a cooling pad do the job or is in more internally. Pls Help with some options!

  • HT1688 My iphone 5 screen is flickering then going black and becoming unresponsive.

I just bought this phone, it is up to date on software AND it has had a waterproof lifeproof case on it since day one. When the battery is low the screen flickers uncontrollably and fades to black or white, there are a bunch of sideways lines on it. This phone has NOT been dropped or gotten wet.

    Was this phone ever jalbroken?
If restoring as new, without using a backup, didn't help, there is certainly a hardware problem that only replacement can fix.  Your warranty is void unless you return to the USA.  Short of that, finding a local independent iPhone repair center would be your only option

  • Macbook pro 13 screen fades to black?

Does any other owner of a mid 2010 MBP 13" (puchased 2/11) have this weird problem: when the laptop is warmed up, the screen randomly dims then fades to black then in a few seconds lights up again. In addition, while the screen fades, the lights look like, oddly, stage lighting. I have already had the whole screen replaced (the whole top), but it still persists. On my next call to Apple Support they told me this is reported by others and "they are working on it" and to look for a firmware update. All fine and dandy, but I have frustration in the meantime. I and my family have been owners of many mac products since 1990. They are all great products and now that I have a real issue, I am banking on great support.

There are two other discussions about a similar topic.  See if resetting the SMC helps...otherwise, the other recommendation is to take it in for service.

  • After screen replacement, top half of screen starts by looking normal but then fades to black while bottom half stays bright but with images blury. What might went wrong?

A friend recently gave me their old Macbook pro 15 because they broke the screen and the Apple store quoted them $500-600 to fix it. I looked online and bought a screen of ebay for $170 in hopes of fixing it myself. After getting the screen I hooked it up using the steps I found online. Sadly when I turned it on, the top half of the screen was working apparently normally, but then it faded to black. The bottom half stayed bright with color the whole time but the images were always blurred. When I close the screen with it on, then open it after turning the computer on, the top half lights up with my desktop images as if it is working fine but then fades to black. The bottom is still blurred the whole time. What all could be wrong? Display cable, Inverter cable, not registering the screen or something, the screen is bad? I don't now a ton about all this and I have learned most of what I know from online research. I am not sure if I should send the screen back or if there is another issue. I just want to fix this thing.

Unfortunately, you don't even know the lower half of the computer is working properly, because you didn't have it until after it had been abused. So forget the attached screen for the moment. Connect an external monitor to it, fire it up, and see whether you can get a usable image on the external screen. If you can, send the defective "new" screen back for a refund, or replace the LVDS video cable first to make sure that's not where the problem lies, and if it isn't, then resort to sending the screen back. If you can't get a good image on the external, give the junk machine back to your friend and walk away.
