My screen freeze with Time Machine
Hello,
So I would like to go when Time Machine, and the screen freezes. I can click once on the window then everything is blocked. I do apple alt esc to return to the desktop.It was on an external disk (USB). I tried with another disc and the same thing. Thank you in advance for your answers.

You will want to add your Time Machine drive to VirusBarrier X5's Trusted Zone so that the items are not scanned as Time Machine reads and copies to that directory.
You can either do this in VirusBarrier X5's Preferences, under the "Scanner" section.
Or you can add it using the contextual menu by holding down the Control key and clicking on the Time Machine backup volume. A pop-up menu will appear, in the "More" submenu is a submenu for "VirusBarrier X5" with a choice of "Add to Trusted Zone". Choosing this will add the item to VirusBarrier's Trusted Zone and keep it from being scanned by the background scanner.

Mail freezes with time machine.
I am trying to restore my Inbox in mail with Time Machine.
While I was on the mail screen I went to Time Machine and saw my old mail. For some reason I got out of Time Machine w/o restoring the Mail. My thought was I could just go back in. Now when I am on the Mail screen and I go to Time Machine it just hangs.
So, I tried a different way. I restore the directory and it shows 2200 mails. However, when I open Mail and check my Inbox it only shows 237 email.
Any Ideas?Some more information might be needed.
When you restore mail messages using TM, the messages do not go back into the folders they were originally in but into a new folder called Time Machine in the On My Mac section of the sidebar. Please confirm whether you have such a folder and, if so, what is in it.
How did you get out of TM when you didn't restore the messages? Was that intentional or did you think you were restoring the messages?
When you say you restored the directory what exactly do you mean?
Do the 237 messages in your inbox include any restored messages or were they always there? -
Retina Macbook Pro with Mountain Lion freezes with Time Machine
I have a new MBP Retina, it crashes more than any other mac I've owned in the past 18 years! If it turn Time Machine off, it becomes much more stable, but I now dont have a back up (I kept getting the 'sparse bundle in use already" error so I wiped my time machine a,d reset everything).
Ive done a clean reinstall, zapped PRAM, reset all system settings, and it still wont run unless time machine is turned off. Is this a common issue and can we expect a fix soon?screen freezes, no keys or mouse work, have to hard restart .
happens during a host of different activities with different software open, during back ups, installing other programmes etc. screen wouldnt work when it had gone to sleep. I only turned time machine off because i couldnt get the mac running for long enough to do a back up, then hey presto, it hasnt crashed since! -
Freezing/crash of iMac under Snow Leopard when backup with Time Machine
Hi!
The backup on my external hard drive with Time Machine cannot be completed.
After few ten Go out of 360Go the backup stops suddenly and the computer freezes/crashes.
I have got an iMac Intel Core 2 Duo with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 − 64 bit. The external hard drive is a LaCie 500Go.
Also, backups for another Apple computer can be done with this LaCie external drive. So, it is not the cause of the freezing/crash of the iMac.
I tried to solve this problem applying the following steps:
1- I started with the installation disk.
2- I repaired the internal iMac drive and the permissions with the Disk Utilities soft on the installation disk. All was OK.
3- The LaCie drive was erased, formatted again with one GUID partition (500Go) and the disk verified. All was OK.
4- I re-install the OS with the installation disk -> 10.6 Snow Leopard
5- Updates to 10.6.8, etc… security update 2012-004 and the 13th Java update to v1.6.
6- I deleted in the folder /Library/Preferences the file com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
7- I deleted the file com.apple.finder.plist in the administrator account Preferences folder.
8- The iMac was shutdowned as well as the external LaCie drive.
9- I restarted and changed the name of the external LaCie drive.
10- I choose the LaCie backup drive with Preferences System > Time Machine with right exclusions.
Unfortunately, the problem remained and the backup was again unsuccessful followed by another freezing/crash of the iMac.
So how to solve this problem?

Backup with Time Machine and freezes
I am trying to back up my computer with Time Machine to my Time Capsule. I have about 102 GB of data to backup. When it gets to about 8 mb it stops backing up and won't go any further. I restarted my computer, then erased the Time capsule and tried it again. No difference?
Anyone know what the problem is here?
Same thing happened after I installed Snow Leopard.When it "stopped" how long did you wait to know that it was really "stopped"?
It may be that it was copying over a large file. The initial backup is going to take a long time. -
Frequent screen freezes with os 10.8.3
I am experiencing frequent screen freezes with OS 10.8.3 on my 27" iMac, Late 2009. Sometimes while using Safari, sometimes while using Photoshop CS5.1, Sketchup 8, or other software. Rarely does it coincide with a processor intensive operation. I have not had this problem since my old white G5 iMac. Then it was aleading indicator that the CPU or power supply needed replacing (I went through 5 processors and 6 power supplies with that machine.) I took my current iMac in to the Apple Store and had it checked out. Hardware checked out fine, but the freezes are becoming more frequent. Does anyone have any suggestions?
The next time you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

Start Up Screen Freeze With Lines Across Screen
The computer is the iSight version. In moving it from one room to another I shut it down properly. I had a back-up HD with Time Machine which I shut down properly. When I tried to restart it shortly after at the new location, the start up chime sounded and the Apple logo came on with the spinning wheel but the screen had light blue horizontal lines across it. The lines at first seemed squiggly but after restarting a few times, the screen seemed to be divided into vertical columns about 3/4" wide with one column having pixels colored light blue and the next column having the same coloration but the row of colored pixels was above the previous one. This arrangement alternated across the screen. I hope this is clear. After a while the spinning wheel and the screen froze and the computer would not continue with the start up.
I reset the SMU by unplugging the power cord, etc. but this did not work. I tried restarting in safe mode-negative. I tried restarting from the original disc-negative. Initially, it sounded like the disc was working because it makes a distinctive noise when a disc is working in the drive but eventually the same initial screen came on with the wheel spinning and then freezing. I tried the current versions of Techtool Pro and Disc Warrior and neither worked. The same thing happened. The noise from the disc drive but the same screen would come on and then the spinning wheel would freeze. Initially the screen with the Apple and the spinning wheel and the lines came on quickly but after a number of times turning the computer on and off, the screen remained dark with a faint light and when the screen came up, the spinning wheel was already frozen.
I use a flight simulator-X-Plane- a lot and some times when I leave it on, screen saver comes on and when I bring the screen back up, the first screen that came up and quickly changed had to do with X-Plane but not with what I was doing. Also, sometimes when I left it and came back there was a different screen but still part of X-Plane but not the screen I left before. I don't know if this is related to my problem or specific with X-Plane. I brought it up because this is the only thing that was different prior to this problem but may not be related. Right now, I've turned it off(obviously) and disconnected the power cord and the keyboard.
Any help would be appreciated.I've started taking the iSight apart. Detaching the plastic took some time and care but with only a few tears. Separated the screen. The main board is positioned such that the capacitors are on the bottom. So many connections and most of them small. Have to be careful. So many small screws. I hope I can remember where they all go when I put everything together-I hope. I'm at the point where I've turned the main board over so that the capacitors are showing. I hope I can reconnect correctly. Two capacitors have a slight bulge at the top compared to the others. Although I am not sure whether these two are part of the problem. There is another one that has no bulge but there seems to be some stuff on the top. It is not corrosion so I'm not sure whether it was manufactured that way or something is wrong with it. I finally found the battery. Just to change it is such a job. You have to disconnect a lot of stuff and turn the board over to get at it unless Apple technicians have a shortcut. Do you think the battery could cause the problems I have? Anyway, if I have the board exposed already might as well try and change the capacitors. I have not come across any video that shows how to expose the underbelly of the main board. Nor have I seen any video that shows what each part is. On the left side of the layout is an long rectangular shape covered over with black plastic. I haven't checked it out but I assume it is the power source. At the upper left there is a rectangular board with capacitors underneath but there are connections underneath that are so tightly stuffed that I couldn't turn it over but I could lift it up a little and see the heads of some capacitors and there wasn't any bulging capacitors or corrosion. There's one big capacitors under there. Much bigger then those on the mother board. Interesting observation. When I turned the screen over to expose its back most of it was frosted except for a small rectangular piece that was dark but glassy like and the glass like part lies exactly on the small rectangular board about 4X5 or 4X6. Interesting why this small section of the back of the screen should be different from the rest of the back and why it should be exactly above the smaller board. Like the previous versions of iMac, it would be so easy to be able to open the back and have all of the capacitors exposed. My next action is to contact one of the references you posted and see if I can get these three capacitors and the battery from Radio Shack or somewhere and solder the capacitors to the mother board. After all of this putting the whole thing together correctly without ending up with extra parts. One thing did break. Next to the fan in the middle there is a piece of metal attached to the back. There is a small narrow slot in this metal that another piece of bent metal seems to go into and was soldered to it and when everything is put together it seems, although I'm not sure, that this metal touches the back of the screen. It looks like I have to solder it back. I don't know what its purpose is, maybe it grounds the screen? I thought the piece of metal was something to pull in order to liftup something else. So far that is the only thing that has broken and hopefully can be easily fixed. But nothing that seems easy is easy.

I have a MacBook Pro, 10.10.2 Yosemite. My external hard drive no longer appears on my screen or in Time Machine. I have gone into Disc Utility to repair disc, and get the message: Error: Partition map check failed because no slices were found. I was trying to follow Melophage's instructions by going into "Terminal" and entering "diskutil list; diskutil cs list; mount" and "diskutil info disk2." Then I entered the command "sudo got show disk1." I am sure I have made the problem worse. Can you give me some help? Thank you. blelambert

Problem using a WD hard Drive with Time Machine
A couple weeks ago I bought a 1TB Western Digital "Elements" Hard Drive and configured it with Time Machine on my MacBook Pro (running Mountain Lion OSX version 10.8.3). The drive was working fine until last night, when it was in the process of backing up and it got the following error:
Time Machine Error
Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder.
Now whenever I try to unlock the drive, it freezes up like this:
I've tried restarting the computer and reconnecting the drive several times, and it always gets stuck in the same place. I know my password is correct, because I've tried incorrect ones, and it shakes and rejects them like it should. It's only when I enter the correct password that it freezes.
I went into the disk utility to try to verify the disk, but it gave me these two popups:
I notice it says the drive is almost full, though last night it was somewhere around a third full. I don't know what to make of that.
I had to eject the disk and reconnect it before I could try to repair it. When I did try to repair it, it worked for several minutes, then gave me this:
I notice here that the disk utility looks to have ejected the disk when it couldn't repair it. After that, I don't know what to try.
The one thing I did differently last night that may have contributed to the problem was that before I got the initial Time Machine error, I added a couple of folders to the WD drive and backed up some pictures and music manually. Does Time Machine not work if you have other things on the external drive you're using?
At any rate, I'd rather not erase the drive and start over. Is there anything else I can do at this point? Thanks.Sounds like your drive may be failing. Test it on another system first, but if the problem persists, get it replaced under warranty.

Accessing back-ups on external hard-drive with Time Machine.
Hi guys,
I hope someone can help me with this problem. I am a novice at this so please be patient and forgive my ignorance.
I backed up the internal hard-drive of my '06 iMac onto an external Iomega 500GB hard-drive using Time Machine.
A couple of weeks later the internal hard-drive of my iMac fried and I got the " grey screen of death ".
Now I have the external hard-drive connected to my '06 MacBook.
There is 300GB of data on the external hard-drive. There is only 50GB of space available on my MacBook.
I would like to access my iPhoto on the external hard-drive but when I click on the iPhoto icon in Time Machine, I get "error code 10657 ".
I am NOT trying to do a full restore of the back-up onto the MacBook because :
1. There is not enough space available on the MacBook and
2. I will do a full restore when I have bought and installed a new bigger hard-drive into the iMac.
So, I guess my question is this : Is it possible for me to access my iPhoto on the external hard-drive using my MacBook without doing a complete transfer and if so, how ?

Sean.If this is a network device, you can't back it up with Time Machine. If it's directly attached, and in Mac OS format, delete it from the exclusion list in the Time Machine preference pane.

I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard and foolishly upgraded to Yosemite. Now have numerous problems. Is it possible to go back in time with Time Machine and reinstall Snow Leopard? Then upgrade to Lion or Mavericks? Any other ideas on how I can exit Yosemite?
Once you get yourself back to Snow Leopard, if you still want to upgrade somewhat, I would suggest the following:
1. Get an external hard drive that you can use for experiments with new OS versions. You could partition it into 2 or 3 partitions. You could then clone your existing Snow Leopard system to one partition using Carbon Copy Cloner (well worth $40) or SuperDuper ($25).
2. Buy OS X Mountain Lion for $20, through the Apple online store (I don't think it's available through the App Store). Apple has decided to make it very difficult for anyone to get Mavericks unless they have already downloaded it.
You will receive two e-mails from Apple, one containing a PDF with a redemption code, and one with the password you will need to unlock the PDF. Using the code, you will download Mountain Lion from the App Store, where it will appear among your Purchased items.
After ML finishes downloading, its installer app will launch itself. When you see this launch screen, QUIT the install app immediately! Go to your applications folder, find the Install OS X Mountain Lion app, and copy it to a safe location outside of your Applications folder. Keeping one or more copies will allow you to reinstall without unnecessary aggravation if you later need or want to do that. At this point, you can re-launch the Installer in the Applications folder and let it run. You can install it on a clean partition on your external HD, or you can allow it to upgrade the Snow Leopard clone you created on your external drive, or you can do both. This should allow you to test how everything works for as long as you like.

Well first you have to figure out what is wrong with the machine and solve that problem first.
Your post is very vague on what occured, and there are many types of "crashes" it really depends upon what see on the screen and what the hardware does, we can't see it to tell you, so you have to tell us.
I suggest you run through these user tips and provide more information about your hardware.

If this is going way over your head, there are local PC/Mac techs that will assist you for a fee, Apple only does hardware repairs and is advised to use them if you discover it is, especially if under warranty/AppleCare.
Hard drive and RAM upgrades can be handled yourself or by a outside tech in many older models of Mac, but don't expect Apple to cover the new parts.

Let me preface this by saying I have spent the last day scouring the internet for solutions to my problem. I have tried every option that I have run across and have had no luck in resolving my problem. As a last resort, I'm turning here in hopes that you can be of help.
I have a 2012 Macbook Pro running Moutain Lion. I use an external HD for my time machine backups. I am having an issue with Time Machine not functioning. The initial error message I receive when I attempt to use TM to backup is: "Time machine couldn't coplete the backup to Rick's backup disk". "Unable to complete backup. an error occurred while creating the backup folder".
I searched the forums and net and found several things to do to try and resolve this issue. My computer will freeze out and not let me erase, or re-partition the the hard drive, so I switched it over to an older macbook of my girlfriends and am successfully able to erase, and re-partition the drive (using disk utility) as suggested by several forum postings I have read. I am able to run disk verify and disk repair and both say the disk is "ok" with no issues. The moment the erase and partition is done, her computer prompts a message : "Would you like to use this disk for Time Machine Backups" which tells me it is working properly. When I move it back to my macbook pro and attempt to run TM backup, it will now work and copy about 10g of my 120g before shutting down with this error message:
"Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Rick's Backup Disk". An error occurred while copying files. The problem may be temporary. If the problem persists, use disk utility to repair your backup disk."
If i attempt to re-run TM at that point, I get the original error message:
"Time machine couldn't coplete the backup to Rick's backup disk". "Unable to complete backup. an error occurred while creating the backup folder".
If I move the TM back to my Girlfriends computer and attempt to run TM, it will function properly and backup her entire harddrive. When I erase and try again on mine, I always end up back with the same issues. It's clearly something in my macbook that is screwing it up. Can anyone please offer some help! There's a problem with a file on your system. See #C3 in the above link. It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it. If that doesn't help, post back with details, including all the messages, what you've done, and the results. -
System settings gone after "reanimation" with time machine
Dear all,
i had a problem signin' in with my first user. After entering the password there was just the "front page" blue screen with my cursor but nothing more. I tried to solve the probmlem in single-user mode entering some things in the terminal. Nothing happened. So i decided to "reanimate" the system with time machine getting my latest backup back on. Everything went well and quick but now i have the problem that there is just the "others"-section displayed in systemsettings, the rest is gone.
I tried to fix it, deleting the file in the directory "caches", but didn't work.
Do you have a clue how to fix it?!

IMac freezes while Time Machine updates the back up. What to do?
Ever since I upgraded to Lion my iMac freezes or nearly freezes for 5 - 10 minutes every hour while Time Machine updates the back up. What to do?
I have tried everything I can think of but its only improved from total freeze while Time Machine backs up to freeze with an occasional few seconds of activity.
I am really fed up with this.When I first updated to Lion everything was a mess with freezes happenng constantly like every two or three minutes. Then when looking at the app store I noticed in purchased items that Lion was showing install instead of installed so I downloaded and installed again.
After this install every time Time Machine updated a backup my iMac froze for about 5 or 10 minutes while the backing up was in progress. I was getting really fed up and started this thread. Then one morning I got up and the iMac would not start up. It just sat there with the progress thingy spinning. I started in T mode to look at it from my MacBookPro and two copies of the HD appeared. Both showing zero files. I ran Disk utility on the MacBookPro to try to fix the disk. It showed 8 copies of the disk and all not reparable.
I then created a startup USB drive using my MacBookPro, used it to start up the iMac and restored everything from the previous day's backup. Since then it has been running smoothly with no freezes so maybe the answer is simply to restore a recent backup.
I am using Imation external drives and I don't believe the problem is drive specific.
