My screen has a broken Apple logo on start up.  What does this mean?

I have been having some trouble starting up my MacBook pro and when it does start, there is a broken Apple logo on the bottom half of the screen.  Is this a hardware or software issue, and what do I do?

Hi there barbara0808,
I would recommend making sure all your software is up to date and resetting your computer's PRAM as an initial troubleshooting step. Take a look at the articles for more information.
