My screen is crack, are there keyboard shortcuts to use S-Video

Good afternoon all,
I am a novice with Macs. Unfortunately, due to my own carelessness, my display is destroyed. I don't have the ability to see more than the top left corner of the screen.
I have the S-Video - VGA adapter cord. However, I don't have the ability to change the settings on my computer b/c I can't see the screen. Is there a shortcut or keyboard process that could guide me through changing those settings?
Thanks,
Carl

Hi, proto, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
You will need the use of a second computer monitor, at least temporarily, and a USB keyboard and mouse. The following procedure may work using a TV set connected via S-Video, but I'm not certain of that, so I suggest using a real monitor instead, at least to verify the that Powerbook is still capable of operating in display-closed mode when wired to a conventional monitor.
Follow the instructions in this article to operate the computer in display-closed mode.
If it works, give the same procedure a try using your TV set and connecting it via S-Video. If that isn't successful, I suspect it's because of the S-Video connection, and you'll probably have to use a regular computer monitor instead.

Are there keyboard shortcuts to turn stopmboxes on/off?

To continue and clarify this thread: I've had no problem pairing my iPhone and my headset, and no problem using the headset for calls when I'm anticipating that I'll want to use bluetooth and have it turned on. But, unlike many I've seen lately, I don't think of my bluetooth headset as a fashion accessory, and as others have noted, having it on all the time drains the battery much more quickly than turning on bluetooth only when you need it.
I've been looking for a shortcut such that, when my bluetooth is turned off and I find myself taking a call for which I'd like to be using bluetooth, I could easily and quickly turn bluetooth on and handle the call on my headset. My handling of such situations now is clumsy and cumbersome; I put my call on hold and back out to settings to turn bluetooth on, then the headset, then back to my call, which I switch over. So, nobody has a more elegant solution? I'm not just the naive user who hasn't yet figured out the trick?

  • Are there keyboard shortcuts for navigating Fireworks Layers?

In Photoshop, 'option-[' or 'option-]' allow you to select up and down layers from the keyboard, are there equivalent shortcuts in Fireworks?

By default, I don't think there are any shortcuts for this. However, John Dunning created a series of custom Frame and Layer commands, including Go Up and Go Down*. These are free, and once they've been installed, you can assign keyboard shortcuts to them (under Fireworks > Keyboard Shortcuts...).
    http://johndunning.com/fireworks/about/FrameLayerUtils
You might also like to know that FW has a Select Behind tool (it's underneath the Pointer tool). I personally don't use it, but it allows you to click on an object on the canvas, and progressively select the items beneath that object.
*A caveat regarding the scripts: The "Go Up" and "Go Down" commands don't seem to be working on my older version of Fireworks (FW8). Also, I forgot that Photoshop and Fireworks use different terminology. What's called a "layer" in Photoshop is called an "object" in FW, and what's called a "group" in Photoshop is called a "layer" in FW. Therefore, John's layer commands may or may not allow you to move up or down the objects within the layers, but they should allow you to move up or down the layers themselves (a.k.a. folders).

  • Are there keyboard shortcuts for switching to desktops with fullscreen apps?

Coming from SL, one functionality that I used a lot was keyboard shortcuts to go to different applications.
For instance, I had assigned Mail to Space 2, iTunes to Space 3 etc.
Then it was possible to instantly go to Mail by pressing alt-2, to iTunes with alt-3 etc.
In Lion, it is possible to assign Applications to desktops, and use the same commands to go to these desktops. However, as soon as an application is 'fullscreened' it leaves its previous desktop, and cannot be reached with the old keyboard shortcuts.
    My question:
is it possible to create a keyboard shortcut to switch to a desktop containing a fullscreen app?

This is quite possible. The way to do it is with keyboard shortcuts. If you check the appropriate boxes you can use a keyboard combination of Control and the Desktop #. It makes it very easy to swtich between desktops.

  • Are there Keyboard shortcuts for Mail? How to quickly move items?

I just came from Entourage, which I was happy to leave. However I have a ton of folders where I organize my emails after I read them in my inbox. I really miss the "Move" button in the Entourage toolbar, which allowed me to start typing the name of folder I wanted to move an email to.
With Mail I have to go and find the destination folder, which is sometimes 5 levels deeps. Yikes! It does seem quicker to do it in the Message menu, but still it's clumsy.
Any tips? Any keystrokes? New to Mail and loving it!
    Jon

You can bypass the Message menu and Control-click on a message or group of messages, then select the Move To item from the contextual menu and select the folder from there.

  • Are there any shortcuts for creating Value Object Classes?

    Hi,
I'm using a Remote Object to connect to my server
(pyAMF/Django). I'm getting stuck with the creation of Value Object
Classes. It doesn't seem very DRY to have a class on my server
representing the data model and then have to recreate that class
and all its properties in my Flex app.
Are there any shortcuts for creating client side VOs from
    server side data?
I was thinking about declaring an empty VO class in Flex, and
then dynamically assigning/casting my Proxy object to that class.
It seems like that approach may cause problems for the Flex
    compiler though.
    Any hints?
    Thanks!

One thing that has helped me in that area is a free tool from

You simply install a (very lightweight) Eclipse plugin, add a
single annotation to your Java VO classes, and it automatically
generates your Flex VOs. It even creates a base and extended
version of each VO on the AS3 side so you can add code to the
extended VO without fear of having your changes overwritten when it
    regenerates your Flex VOs.

AVCD on MAC: are there any processing problems using say, VLC?

We've actually found that the Server 10.6.3 DVD does an amazingly smooth job of upgrading 10.5.8. We've been upgrading our production servers and nothing has gone wrong yet. Snow Leopard employs an archive and install method of upgrading which results in an install which is very close to a clean install. So it's been very convenient for us because our servers are used as Windows PDCs and it's a pain in the *** to have to re-join all PCs to the domain if we start from scratch.

  • Are there any advantages of using Secure Empty Trash over regular Empty Trash?

Are there any advantages of using Secure Empty Trash over regular Empty Trash?

If you are going to run around with sensitive files on your file system, you might be better off using a whole disk encryption so that every file is encrypted, any deleted file contains encrypted contents.  As long a no one can access your files using your encrytpion keys, all your data is secure.
Also secure delete is not really going to do much on a Solid State Drive, and again whole disk encryption would be a better choice.
For a moderate amount of data, secure erase does not take too much time. But if you have a ton of file and/or a few really large files to erase, secure erase can take a long time to complete as it is doing multiple pass to write and overwrite the file's storage with patterns of data that make it extremely difficult to recover the original data.  That takes time.
Finally, if you have been updating a document, previous editions may have been given over to free storage as new versions are written, such that when you decide to erase the file you may only be doing secure erase on the most recent copy.

The screen just cracked, practically shattered after 5 minutes outside and safely in my coat pocket. There was no bump or  drop, absolutely nothing. Is this common?  How can I get this taken care of? I got this for my son, it is his second IPOD. After 2 weeks,it's destroyed without anyone doing anything.

It would appear the someting in your pocket broke the screen. A broken screen is not covered by warranty.  However, sometimes if you make an appontment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store, the Genius will replace the iPod at no cost.  If you have the pay. Apple will exchange yours for $99, $149 or $199 depending upon the capacity.
