My screen on my MacBook Pro keeps going black
I got my MacBook in September of 2010. It's a 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7 with 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3. I have had great luck with it, until recently. This problem has been going on since like August now and it's time I should quit ignoring it. For some reason when I am just using my computer normally my screen goes black. Everything seems to be disabled but the keypad still lights up. The only way to get my macbook working again to to forcefully shut it off and turn it back on. Sometimes when i use the mouse a certain way (such as sliding 3 fingers to view other open windows) it shuts off. I have also updated my software from Snow Leopard to OS X Lion. I don't know what could be causing it. I have had some issues sending in laptops before to get fixed but I have a feeling it's going to come down to that. I'm a college student and use my computer daily and being a broadcasting major I need this computer for everything I do. Can somebody please help?
I had similar problem with my MacBook Pro. Login window goes black in 4 seconds, but it is not turned off. Push power and screen comes back but goes black again in 4 seconds. I can type in password, but before it logs me in, it goes black. If I connect to external monitor, the screen stays up, and I can use extermal mouse but keyboard input is ignored. This was obviously display problem of the Mac, at the least. (no clue why keyboard does not work when connected to external monitor.
I have solution: Reset PRAM
1. Power down Mac compeltely.
2. Hold down Option, Command, P and R keys (four keys total) while you press power button to boot up Mac
3. Mac will restart at least twice. Listen to noise. After 2nd power up, lift all keys.
I kept holding down the keys and Mac restarted like 5 times before I released keys, then rebooting stopped. Mac now works. The article I read said "wait for 2nd reboot". I though it would stop after twice.
In my case, I think use of extranal monitor confused Mac Book Pro eventually. I see no other side effects (such as loss of data on hard disk, resetting clock, resetting default settings etc) while I do reset, so I think this is relatively safe thing to try.

My MacBook Pro screen keeps going black. This is happening more frequently. I have had it in to the Apple store several times for this and they can't find anything wrong other than it is locked up for a while. Since it is happening more and more, I am worried that at some point this will be permanent.
Has it actually happened at the store?
If not then we need to get it to do that. Now it may be completely random but you need to try and make a note of as many things as possible that happen when it does it.
How long has it been on for, what are you doing at the time, what's connected. If it's reproducible then you've at least got somewhere. -
No patterns, it just crashes. Happens every couple of days or so.
try these :
Hold down SHIFT - CTRL - ALT(Option) same time with the POWER BUTTON for a quick 2 seconds then let go and normally turn on your computer -
I've had this laptop since 2010 and it's been pretty good up until about two months ago when it would just randomly crash. The screen would go black and if there was sound going on, the sound would just loop on that single second like a broken record. The only way to get it out of that is to hold the power button and then turn it back on. When these crashes would happen in the beginning it would only be when I had Adobe Photoshop running, now it just happens whenever I'm simply using the internet browsing through Tumblr, Youtube, and Facebook.
Every time I turn my computer back on I get a crash report like this:

Good advice from Linc Davis that should sort out your query i think...
However you dont want to set your MBP to never go to sleep...
Adjust reasonable sleep settings...
And the download an APP called caffiene...
When you click it you can have your MBP never go to sleep with a single click of your menu bar... and with another click it can go to sleep normally to maintain the laptop...
Simply click the cup... To toggle never sleep/sleep -
Macbook Pro keeps going to sleep / not waking up
Hello all,
I'm having trouble with my MacBook Pro going to sleep randomly. I will be working on the computer, and everything will go black. I can still here the computer running. When trying to wake it up from what seems like sleep, no buttons will work. The only thing I can do is do a hard shutdown, holding down power button, and then turning it back on.
This originally happened about 2 months ago, and only once. Since about 2 days ago, it has been happening about 2 times a day. It occurs when the temperature of the computer is cold as well as when it is warm. I am not running too many programs when it happens. I have reset the PRAM.
Any ideas / comments would be appreciated and helpful. Here are my system specs:
15 inch Macbook Pro
2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
4 GB 1067 mHz DDR3
Mac OS X Lion 10.7
Please let me know if there is any other information I can provide to help diagnose the problem.
Thanks again.Marek,

This worked amazingly!! Thanks for the post awvik360!
I was able to access the internal hard drive and perform a permissions fix through disk utility and re-apply the OS X 10.5.6 combo update on a totally debilitated machine (Mac Pro early 08).
Some clarification though:
{{ I used a MacBook Pro instead of USB/ExternalHD to run a working copy of OS X. }}
~ Just start up the healthy OS X (laptop) in target disk mode (hold 't' key while it powers up)
~ Connect it to the impaired Mac with the highest speed cable available (fire800>fire400>USB)
~ Start up the impaired Mac while holding the alt/option key to select the boot drive.
~ Select the connected OS X (laptop hard disk) and start er up.
~ Run disk utility and you can now use the Fix Permissions option on the impaired Mac's internal hard drive.
~ Run the OS X Combo Update (or presumably other offending update/program) and make sure to change the destination to the internal disk of the impaired Mac
~ Shut down, unplug target disk, start up, and you should be good to go.
I was in some kind of uber-kernel panic and could not start up in safe mode OR from the installation disc, and this worked! Definitely a good emergency procedure to have in your back pocket.
Note: ...target disk pairing must be in this direction. I tried setting up the impaired Mac as target and connecting it to running laptop, and it let me run the install fine, but it didn't fix the problem...must be something with permissions that the impaired Mac needs to install to itself, even if the OS is running on another disk/machine.

Macbook Pro 15" goes black/turns off
I got my new Macbook Pro 15" in march (2010), it worked great the first months, but then it started going black and didn´t respond. It would hardly turn off, and when it did I couldn´t turn it back on for a while. This has happened tons of times since. I am just surfing the web or writing documents etc, normal computer things. I have noticed that sometimes me moving the computer (for example from the table to my lap) triggers it to go black.
I have spoken with Apple plenty of times, each time they wanted me to do some checks on it while on the phone, but my macbook went black before it could finish. So I took it to the Apple store, where the guy said he found the problem (something about a program I have installed - everything installed is certified (office, spotify)), and that he fixed the problem. The computer, of course, didn´t go black once while he was checking it out. The minute I got home though, it did.
I just got it back from repair (I sent it in right after), where they found nothing wrong and sent it back. I have had it for two days now, and its been fine until about an hour ago when it happened again (I moved it from the table to my lap). This is driving me insane. Anyone now what I can do??
Thank you!Call up AppleCare. Ask to speak to a customer representative rather than a tech. Explain the problem.

Thanks by advance
Jean-pierreSorry, I am sending now the image again:
Anyway, my screen is getting back to normal now (it is just light blue) but I am curious to understand why it happens (just after 2 months it happened again).
In the country where I am right now we don't have an Apple Store, so any recommendation how I can find out if the problem is the screen or graphic card/sub-system?
Thank you so much -
MacBook Pro keeps going to sleep in closed-lid mode and external monitor
I am trying to run the MacBook in closed lid mode with an external monitor. It seems to work fine at first, but after about 10 seconds, it goes to sleep. I can wake it back up but it just goes to sleep again.
Has anyone seen this before?I figured it out. Apparently you can't run in closed-lid mode on battery. I plugged in the power adapter and it's working fine now.

Has this ever happened to anyone else? I don't know what else to do and it's very annoying and disruptive. It occurs every time I go full screen in any application.
Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
defaults delete com.apple.dock single-app && killall Dock
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear. You can then quit Terminal. Test. -
Why does my MacBook pro keep beeping 3 times. The screen is frozen.
Like my MacBook Pro keeps beeping 3 times and pausing for 2 seconds. The screen is frozen. How do I fix this and what is going on?
That is a RAM issue, do you have any spare ram you can swap to confirm? Possible causes:
a ram module going bad
installation of incompatible ram
your ram may have become dislodged
I would suggest:
- removing all ram from your MBP, and reinstall it to see if that helps.
- if you recently installed new ram, remove it, then restart the computer with the old ram to see if this helps. -
My macbook pro keeps booting up, then after a few seconds, goes back to the sign in page. This happened after I was doing software updates and my computer restarted in the middle of an update. Help! Thanks.
Start up in Safe Mode.

There doesn't seem to be any pattern. It looks like I may have to get it repaired?
