My screen saver won't start on a schedule.

Hello.  On my MacBook Pro running 10.9.2, I recently noticed that the screen saver does not start at the time I've told it to.  My hot corner works and it starts if I set it to start after just one minute, but if I set it to anything longer than a minute, the screen saver just never starts.  I've seen lots of other threads about this.  One user fixed it by clearing his system cache.  I did that with OnyX and I'm still not seeing my screen saver start.  Any cool ideas?
Jeremy

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Preferences/com.apple.screensaver.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Re-launch by logging out/in and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.
You might need to redo the View settings after an update.

Screen saver won't start since Lion upgrade. Two different machines, same issue. Help

For anyone following this thread, I've found a solution to my problem. Turns out that a cute widget called FishTank appears to be the culprit. With it running in Dashboard (even when I don't see Dashboard) the Screensaver and Sleep functions don't work. I turned it off, not because I'm clever, just because I tired of it, and voilà, Screensaver and Sleep are now working. It can stay in my widgets list without any problem, it just can't be turned on. I'm going to delete it anyway, however.
Hope this points the way to solutions for some of the rest of you!
    Cheers!

  • Screen saver won't start

Just upgraded to 10.4.7 and my hot corners won't start the screen saver.
Checked the Security pref pane and all is properly checked. Then again, I changed nothing after installing the 10.4.7 update.
Now I can't start the screen saver with a hot corner. I even made two corners a hot corner.

    Hi, Patrick.
    1. Are you using a third-party mouse? If so, and you installed associated, vendor-provided software to configure the mouse, check for updates to such.
    2. Is this one of the Apple-provided screen savers or a third-party screen saver? If non-Apple, test with an Apple-provided screen saver.
    3. Does the screen saver start normally otherwise, i.e. after a period of inactivity?
    4. Preferences for hot corners for Dashboard, Exposé, and Screen Saver are saved in the Dock's preferences, i.e. the file com.apple.dock.plist in your Home > Library > Preferences folder. These may be corrupted.1. Take a screen shot of your Dock. This is so you know how your Dock was set up before performing the next steps, as these will reset the Dock to its default configuraiton.
    2. Trash the Dock preferences: com.apple.dock.plist in your Home > Library > Preferences folder.
    3. Do one of the following:
    • Log out, then either log back in.
    • Restart your Mac, then log back in to your account.
    • Quit and relaunch the Dock:a. Launch Activity Monitor.
    b. Sort the list of processes in ascending order by name by clicking on the Process Name column heading.
    c. Select the Dock process in the Process List.
    d. Click Quit Process in the Activity Monitor toolbar.
    e. Confirm your intent to quit the Dock process.
The Dock process relaunches automatically with the Dock in its default configuration.4. Reconfigure your Dock as it was using the screen shot from step 1.
    5. Use System Preferences > Dock to reset your Dock preferences for Minimize, Magnification, etc.Note: If you are running any Dock "hacks" or "add ons" you might want to disable or delete these as these can contribute to Dock-related problems, such as issues with Hot Corners.
    Good luck!

  • Screen saver won't go on, laptop won't sleep!

I've got a 17" laptop running 10.3.9. Everything used to be fine. Recently (after the latest Apple update? I'm not sure) I found that the laptop won't go to sleep. It's plugged in on my desk, and I've got the Energy Saver preference panel (set to "power adapter") set to put the screen to sleep after 5 minutes of inactivity, and the computer to sleep after 1 hour of inactivity. I've got the "Desktop & Screen Saver" panel to start screen saver after 5 minutes. And, when I leave it alone overnight, I come back in the morning and the machine is on, screen saver never kicked in. 1) Is this a problem - is there burn-in or anything like that LCDs? and 2) what's going on? I tried rebooting etc. Could I have some process running which prevents sleep? How do I debug this? I need it to start screen saver (and require login!) when I walk away.

    To Apple Discussions!
    Trash the com.apple.desktop.plist file.
    Home>Library>Preferences>com.apple.desktop.plist
Or locate using Spotlight & delete from same.
    Update to OS 10.5.4
Repair permissions & restart your comp.
Please post back the results. If the above does not work, then I suggest that you cross-post over in the Using Mac OS X Leopard Forums especially if no one else chimes in here.

  • Display won't sleep and screen saver won't sart

I upgraded to the new OS and the display won't sleep and screen saver won't come on. Help please.

    Long shot.
    Do a backup.
    Quit the application.
In Finder hold down the option/alt key while selecting the Go menu item. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart the computer, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you want to make your user library permanently visible, run the below command in Applications/Utilities/Terminal.
    chflags nohidden ~/Library/
You will need to do that after any updates.

  • Screen Saver Won't Display

The screen on my iBook is going black after 5 minutes instead of running the screen saver. I've checked Energy Saver and that doesn't seem to be the issue.

    kc,
The only obvious cause for this would be to have the Display Sleep time set earlier or the same as the Screen Saver start time.
It's also possible you have the screen saver set to start with a black slide. If you have a hot corner set, use that to activate the screen saver and check its ordinary behavior.
Mine fades to black on battery, where both are set to the same time, but goes to the screen saver on ACD power, where the SS is set to activate before Display Sleep.

    Barry

  • My ipad has a black screen and won't start, any ideas?

My Ipad 1 has a black screen and won't start, any ideas?  It is charged.

If Paul's advice doesn't work try this.
Hold down on the sleep button AND the home button at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons and let the iPad restart.
BTW ...In order to start up under normal circumstances you only need to hold down on the sleep button for a couple of seconds or so until the Apple logo appears on the screen.

  • Screen saver doesn't start

    Hi All,
I've a strange problem on my MBP. The screen saver doesn't start automatically after the set period.
Do i need to reset the power management or it's a macos X 10.5.5 bug.
Any idea is very well appreciated.
    Regards
    Paul

It probably means that some process is running in the background which is preventing the screen saver from kicking in, Paolo. You may be able to find out what it is using Activity Monitor.
    Cheers

  • My Screen Saver won't turn off on my I-Mac. Is there a way to fix this?

I have an I-Mac that every once in a while won't turn off it's screen saver when I move the mouse. I can see the mouse move and switch to the screen with the caculator, but I am unable to get the screen saver to stop and view the screen proper.
It has been updated with mavericks, but was doing this before the update. It's set to update on a weekly basis, so It should be good in that department.
so far, any suggestiosn I have been able to find haven't stopped this from happening. i'm looking for a way to exit out of the screen saver.

Have you tried going to System Preferences/Desktop & Screensaver/Screensaver, and choose "Start after Never"? That turns off the screensaver. Then, under System Preferences/Desktop & Screensaver/Desktop, choose the image you want. You can vary the sleep by playing around with System Preferences/Energy Saver, and playing around with your preferences.

  • Premiere will freeze at loading screen and won't start. Running win7 64bit

Hi, I'm having a bit of a problem here.
I just recently upgraded to CC because I had this issue with the CS 6 versions.
    The problem:
Premiere Pro, inDesign, Illustrator and After Effects won't start. They will all get stuck at the loading screen. The weird thing is that Photoshop and Lightroom work without any problems.
I've tried restarting, completely wiping all Adobe Software with the cleaner tool and reinstalling. I've contacted support via chat and the couldn't find a fix. I then looked for weird processes in the task manager and found out that after a while (2-5 minutes) of letting Premiere show a blank loading screen (no "Loading ..." / "Initialising..." etc), suddenly "Loading ImporterPhotoshopProxy.prm" will appear and a process called "PhotoshopServer.exe" will show up in the task manager. If I kill this process then Premiere will start.
Has anyone had similar problems? Can't find anything on Google.
    Thanks in advance.

If you had problems with CS6 upgrading to CC or CC2014 will not solve your problems.  You must have basic hardware/software problems that only will get worse going to more complex versions.  Do you have any third party codec pack installed?  You must have rogue processes running.  When you start up your system how many processes are running, look at your task manager?
    What is your hardware configuration?

  • MacBook Pro checkered screen? Won't start up??

Yesterday I was using my MacBook Pro and then all of a sudden the screen randomly got covered in this checkered pattern and it was flickering so I shut off the computer and now it won't start up it goes to the gray apple screen and the icon will spin for about 40 seconds then stop and it stays like that. There is a little checkering over the gray apple screen to. I've tried starting up in safe mode, resetting prvm, holding option and s, none of it worked it just kept going to the same screen and not starting up. Can anyone please help?! Is it completely cooked? What's causing this? I don't mind having to reset the whole hard drive if it comes down to that but will that fix anything? Please help....thanks!

I'll give my honest opinion, rather than a sales line.
    1. MBPs with larger monitors are more highly correlated with logic/graphics board problems.
    2. As the link suggests, no MBP can guarantee that you won't end up with a logic board problem down the road. However, 13" models have a good track record.
    3. Any MBP user should be aware of the problems associated with heat. The temperature should be consitently lower than 145F, and never higher than around 170F at any time. Longterm gaming or using your MB on your lap are bad ideas.
Any MBP that's kept at 210F will end up with a logic board problem eventually. Solder connections loosen with higher temperatures, and the MB logic/graphics board is soldered in.
Updates are imminent for current MBPs - wait for those. http://buyersguide.macrumors.com

  • Screen saver won't stay on photo library

Boy, lots of unanswered questions with the new OS 10.10.  I posted this question yesterday, got no responses, and now it is so far back I didn't get to it after adding More Pages over ten times - still at 4 hours ago.  I don't think anyone will ever see it again.
I have selected a folder from iPhoto to use for a screen saver - recent pictures.  It loads the pictures but the next time the computer goes to screen saver it use the National Geographic pictures.  Now they are beautiful but I want to see pictures of my grand kids! What am I doing wrong or what is Yosemite doing wrong?  This is very frustrating!
    Stu

This seems to be working, at least for the short term, but it seems strange to be required to keep the system preferences open all of the time.  I am going to try there suggestion below from Linc Davis and see what happens.

  • Display won't go to sleep / screen saver won't turn on

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard instead of the screen saver activating or the screen going to sleep when inactive, the screen goes dark for about a second and then flashes back on. It's resulted in images being burned into my screen a couple of times now.
If I manually activate the screen saver then the screen saver stays active and after a minute the display goes to sleep. Also, if I'm using Front Row the screen will go to sleep without a problem. I've tried turning off all apps to test it if one of them is preventing it, and and it still happens.
    Anyone else have this happening?

The screensaver preference file is stored in ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.xxxxxxx.plist, where xxxxxxx is a UID for your machine. By moving this file out of the folder, your screensaver settings will be reset to the defaults.
The power settings are stored in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist.
If your new user does not have the problem, then the preference problem may be in your ~/Library/Preferences folder.

  • Screen saver won't come up

First of all, ...how do I know if my mac is Intel or PPC?  I bought it 4 days ago from the apple store so whatever they're selling now a days is what I got.  27" brand new Imac straight out of the box.
Ok, ..now,...since the day I got it, the screen saver wont come on.  The desktop goes to sleep but thats it.  I've played around with the settings several times in response to other discussions and posts but nothing seems to work.  When I "test" the screen saver it works fine, ...it's just that when my computer goes to sleep, ...thats it,....black screen.  I've seen several posts stating that this is a problem with certain versions and when certain updates go through it will be fixed....yada, yada, yada.  I'm no Mac-pro, I've only just recently switched from PC but this seems to be a rather frequent problem based on what i've seen posted.
Any ideas ?   ...please be specific and keep it simple if possible.  Assume nothing other than I know how to launch system preferences and find destop and screen saver tab.
    Adam

you need to check energy saver to set up the times for the screen saver to click on for both battery and AC power...
go to system preferences, energy saver, select either battery or power adapter, optimization would be set to custom, show details, then select what time you want your screen saver to turn on...
    thats it
    cheers
