My search bar (FF 22) has suddenly become inoperable; hitting enter doesn't do anything (am only getting to sites via bookmarks and links now)

I'm a long-time FF user. Am using version 22 now (which appears to have updated from 18 by itself though I had it set to ask me before updating - but 22 2 worked fine for me once I'd solved the problem of screen being so large it hid my upper menu and tabs). Now suddenly, just in the last week, entering a (valid) url in the search bar and hitting enter doesn't 'do' anything. No search capability at all because hitting enter doesn't cause FF to take any notice of me putting in a URL for a site I want to go to (I use the same sites over and over so not just some new site acting up).
Not my keyboard or mouse malfunctioning; they function as usual in other programs I use constantly - email, inventory database - and no updates on either program, in Word, Excel, NotePad, my photo program, whatever. Security Essentials updated about a week ago but I can't see inside it to see if it changed anything. Am an XP Pro user and keep it updated (till next year, anyway!). Keyboard is an Elite Real Force, mouse Evoluent (corded). Have used both for a couple of years so not new to me.
Only way I can use FF 22 in the last few days to get to 'any' site, including my own, is to either go from the sites pinned to my opening screen or from my bookmarks. I tried unpinning some of the sites on my opening screen and then typing in their URL and hitting enter but that didn't change anything - the search bar is still inoperable and hitting 'enter' doesn't do anything at all.
So why did my search bar quit working? Is there a fix?

No, do not use the Reset feature. When you click "Show Folder" Windows opens a Windows Explorer window with your personal settings files listed. I want you to delete a file in that folder, but first, I want Firefox to be closed. When I said to switch back to Firefox and exit, I meant to make Firefox the active window, then use File>Exit or Firefox>Exit to close the application.

My iMac has suddenly become very slow to wake from "sleep." How do I fix this and what is causing the problem? Even the mouse wakes very slowly.

    Try these basic troubleshooting steps.
    1. Quit all app scompletely and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
    2. Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
    3. Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

My Macbook Pro purchased Dec 2011 has suddenly become very slow after not using for 2 weeks (close to frozen). What is the problem and how to solve it?

    Need Help Ye,
boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Is it still very slow?

  • IMac has suddenly become very slow doing everything?

My iMac has suddenly become very slow -at present it is useless and will have to take to apple unless you can help.?

First, make sure you have adequate backups. If your hard disk is failing this could be a sign. It can be replaced if necessary, but a backup strategy is recommended whether or not you are experiencing problems.
Read: OS X Mountain Lion: If your Mac runs slowly. It applies to Lion as well. The article is very cursory, but be sure to read through to the end. Unfortunately the link there is broken, so use this one: Disk Utility. To do this you must start your Mac from the Recovery System or Internet Recovery.
Rather than ask a dozen questions for more details about your system consider the following. You must be running either Lion or Mountain Lion. Including your version of OS X in your system description would help.
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:
    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Etrecheck will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply. Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or "failed".
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.

  • Clicking on the downward arrow at the right end of the location bar no longer displays the drop-down list of sites visited, bookmarks and addresses typed in location bar

Since I upgraded to Firefox version 3.6.10, clicking on the downward arrow at the right end of the location bar no longer displays the drop-down list of sites visited, bookmarks and addresses typed in location bar. My Tools > Options > privacy setting is to save history, and if I start typing a previously accessed website's address in the location bar, then the full address appears as a drop-down item. But not when I just click at the right end of the bar.

You can try "Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults" on the [[Safe mode]] start window.

  • My Macbook Air has suddenly become extremely slow and is always crashing?

Hi, I would really appriciate some help right now.
I have had my Macbook Air for a little more than 2 years. It has always worked pretty well. However, recently I went on vacation for 1 week without my laptop. When I returned home and went to turn on my computer, I noticed that it had become extremely slow. Firstly, turning on my computer has become an abnormally long process. It used to take about 2-3 minutes to turn on. Now, it takes a solid 10 minutes. Not only this, but once my computer has finally turned in, it usually takes another 10 minutes before I can open an internet browser. When I click on the browser (I used Google Chrome) no window will pop up, and after a few more clicks, my screen will freeze completely. Sometimes I will get the rainbow wheel and sometimes the screen just completely freezes without it. Sometimes I will try closing the lid of my computer and then reopening it, but when I do this, the screen stays black for a long period of time even after I have reopened it, almost as if the computer is off. After an excessive amount of key smashing and an abnormally large amount of time, the screen will finally stop being in sleep mode and show my desktop. Even then, my computer will still barely work. Once I finally get a window open and start using the internet, google chrome will end up crashing within at least 20 minutes. The entire screen will freeze, I won't be able to scroll down or exit out of the window, and I then usually have to repeat the painful process that I described above when I attempt to open my broswer.
It has been over a week since I returned from vacation, and I deal with these issues every time. My computer has always been fine in the past, why is this suddenly happening?
I have tried to remove some of my applications my going into Finder and highlighting the application and clicking Move to Trash, and then emptying the trash. This hasn't helped at all. Do you think that it would help to delete some of my files and data (pictures, documents, screenshots, downloads, ect) or is this irrevevant?
I would really appricate some help! I am really sick of having to deal with this. I have no idea what is going on or how to fix it, or why this has suddenly happened after a week of being away from my computer.
Thank you so much. If you need any more detail or have any more questions, please ask.

It's likely that the internal drive is failing, or you have some other hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to bare metal from any of them.) Don’t erase the Lion recovery partition, if present.

  • Multiple search bar - each tab has its own search bar

Firefox has global search bar - no matter how many tabs open all of them will have one search bar with the same search request.
What should one does to have a new and empty search bar for a new tab?
In other worlds I would like to open a new Tab with new search bar with empty field.
    Thanks in advance

1st screenshot = those are plugins, not extensions! I'm leaning towards an extension doing that, more so now after looking at your prefs settings.
2nd = looks like you turned off '''browser.search.suggest.enabled''' = you shouldn't be getting any suggestions at all
    and '''browser.search.showOneOffButtons''' isn't disabled
I have no experience with that pref not being disabled. I turned that pref off when I first saw it in Beta 34, because it totally screwed up the way I do searches with 35 search engines installed where as many as 5 use the same icon and there are 3 different groups of engines that have 2 or 3 of the same icon. Same domain but use different search parameters or terms.
One more thing - maybe the search engine you have selected is providing that "search" string. Google may do that if you don't have "suggestions" turned off in your Google+ prefs, iirc - especially if you are always logged into Google+.

  • Safari 8 has suddenly become painfully slow (Not network related)

Since yesterday, Safari has stopped working properly. Nothing has changed in my computer set up or in the applications that I use. I’m running the latest update (Version 8.0.2 (10600.2.5)) on OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 (14B25). I have a 21" mid-2011 iMac with a 2.5GHz Quad-Core i5 and 16GB of RAM.
Here are the symptoms: Safari lags like a drunk cow. It takes about 9 bounces to open after which it hogs 2 GB of RAM according to Activity Monitor—that’s with two tabs open. Webpages take upwards of 30 seconds to open. Opening a contextual menu can take 10 seconds. Opening a new tab takes 2 seconds. Everything else on the system runs smooth as butter. I’m able to edit video, sling huge files around, edit huge Photoshop documents, run processor-intensive Logic projects and browse the web (in Chrome) at lightning speed. It would therefore stand to reason that this is not a network issue or a hardware issue.
I really want to keep using Safari as it’s been my main browser for years and old habits die hard, but this is just insane. I will leave my rant about the recent nosedive in Apple’s software quality for another post as I really would like to know if there is any hope or if I should sign away my privacy to Google and live in blissful ignorance.
I’ve tried all the tricks I know: emptying the cache, clearing the history, booting in Safe Mode. Nothing helps. This is also different, on the surface at least, from the DNS Cache bug that I dealt with immediately after upgrading to Yosemite. With that bug, the progress bar would stall at 20% for 30 seconds at a time but the rest of the interface remained snappy. This is different. It's like the whole browser got dunked in molasses.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • I have suddenly become unable to access photo library  iPhoto (vers 9.5) on my external drive.  And time Machine will no longer back up to the same external (LaCie) drive.  Appreciate all suggestions.  The drive does show up on my desktop....

I have suddenly become unable to access photo library (iPhoto vers 9.5) on my external hard drive.  Also time machine isnt backing up to same external hard drive (LaCie).  The drive does show up on the desk top, but when i open iPhoto the library isnt listed, so I cant option click.

First, one should not try to run an iPhoto library from the same volume/drive that is being used by Time Machine for backups.  TM will continue to fill up the drive thus squeezing out iPhoto from being able to be opened and used. Also that doesn't allow you to let TM backup your library as it does with other files on your boot drive.
If you partition the EHD into two separate partitions you can run the library from it but that won't let TM backup the library which is important.
Are you able to see the library on the EHD via the Finder?  If so copy it back to your boot drive and open it there.  You may have to do some fixing on it.
Solution is to either run the library from the boot drive or get a second EHD to run the library from and let TM back it up along with your boot drive.

  • Logging into my Apple account with ID/password has suddenly become impossible'

I regularly use the Apple forums. I also use two browsers, Firefox and Safari. For the last three years I could use the same ID/password for the Apple forums in both of the browsers but suddenly the Apple log in panel in my Firefox browser tells me my ID or password is incorrectly entered.
Yet the same ID/password still works in the Safari browser and no changes have been made to either (or attempted).
The link below follows a forum correspondence that led to Apple contacting me.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2723335&tstart=0
The Apple people then confirmed the ID and password and suggested that the Firefox password could have become corrupted. They went on to say that they could help reset the password from their end but it is unlikely to resolve the issue with Firefox.
Not being too bright with computers would some kind person give the problem some thought and advise me in simple terms how best to resolve the issue.
My initial thought was to uninstall Firefox thereby losing all the set passwords then re-install. But I'm not sure; the Apple screen I would then log into would still be Apple's.

The problem is on my Mac Pro, the drop down window that contains my Apple ID is an old one & it will not let me change it, any password I try doesn't work including the present one.
