My second macbook can't see my external drive.

I have the following setup:
-a Macbook that is wirelessly connected to my home network
-Macbook Pro that is wirelessly connected to my home network
-a 500g HD connected directly to my Macbook Pro that I am using for Time Machine.
Initially, I was having issues with my Macbook Pro successfully completing a backup. My Macbook (which is not physically connected to my external HD) had no problems backing up. After a great deal of frustration, I decided that there may be some problems with my HD so I reformated and repartitioned the drive to a single drive with journaling. Fortunately, now my Time Machine works with my Macbook Pro but I'm having major issues with my Macbook.
For some reason, my Macbook can no longer see my Macbook Pro, nor my external hard drives I am using for Time Machine and a second external I was hoping to use to share my iPhoto library between the two computers.
(I'm worried that I've done so much that I may have caused the problems but don't want to undo anything for fear that I'll once again mess things up with the Macbook Pro).
For the Time Machine HD, I've selected SHARE. When I use Time Machine on the Macbook, the drive (which was at one time visible) is not there.
For the new External that I was using for iPhoto, I've Shared, selected Ignore Ownership, and even added my wife's name with Read and Write privledges. But the macbook still can't see either drive.
What is confusing me is that my Macbook can still SHARE the Macbook Pro's screen. Yet when I look at the drive it just says connection failed.
I'm new to Macs so I'm not familiar with setting up. I've just tried to use what I would do with a PC.
ANY help is greatly appreciated.

Networking with Vista is a "bag of hurt" as Steve Jobs might put it, but it can be done.
Is there a "How to" somewhere?
I'd recommend getting this book from David Pogue. He devotes pages and pages to this subject alone. Here is a Google excerpt. Enjoy!

  • Can't see my external drive anymore after updating to 10.5.5

Hi! Another problem after updating to 10.5.5: I can't see my external drive anymore. It's a lacie quadra, plugged to my iMac via firewire 800.
Really hope they fix this update really soon...
Any of you knows how much time Apple usually takes to solve upgrade bugs like these we're all experiencing with 10.5.5? Do they do it fast?

Hi Barry, I'll eventually do, but there are other people that have had the same problem right after upgrading to 10.5.5. I really think it's an os x bug, just like the other graphic problems that people are reporting now.
I think Apple should take these reports quite seriously.
Anyway, also think that probably these bugs are confined to iMac intel, as some one else pointed out before in this forum, because some friends of mine upgrading their MacPro, didn't have any trouble.
    Bye!

  • Iphoto can't see my external drive

    Hi,
I want all my photo's from Iphoto to go on an external drive I have. But if I click on Export and have to chose a place then I can't click on my external drive because it's not there on the list on the left side...
Is there an other why to move all my photo's to my external drive?

The question should be 'what's wrong with the external drive'
Can you see it in other programs? can you see it in Disk Utility?

  • How can I see my external drive again after installing mavericks?

    Hi,
I just upgraded my Mac Book Air to Mavericks and I cannot see my external hard drives any more. The data is still there and can be read on other computers. Regular USB keys are also detected.
What should be done so that the external hard drive become "visible" again with Mavericks?
Thank you very much and regards,

    Hi Niel,
Unfortunately, the box was already checked. I tried to "uncheck" and "check it again", but it still does not work.
    What else can be done?
Thank you very much and regards,

  • Macbook can't see external HD connected to iMac

    Hello,
I just bought a Macbook and set it up with my iMac on the wireless network. Everything else works fine, but my Macbook can't see the external drive that is connected to my iMac. I want to be able to back up the Macbook to the drive. I tried turning on file sharing on the iMac and adding the LaCie drive to the list of shared folders, but its still not showing. Is there something I need to change or configure to get it to show up?
    Thanks

I believe this Airport update, released in the spring (2008) did enable AirDisk usage with Airport Extreme wireless devices:

MacWorld: Update allows Time Machine backups on AirPort Extreme
    http://www.macworld.com/article/132613/2008/03/airporttime.html
Unfortunately, it is Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) only, and I see form your stats that you are still on Tiger (10.4).
It will be interesting if Tadd's tip works though. Let us know.
    Cheers!

  • Go Flex TV media player can no longer see the external drive on my airport

Hi there I have an external hard drive hooked up via usb to my airport extreme. I recently purchased a goflex seagate media center for my tv. At first the seagate recognized my external drive with no problem. Streaming files from the hard drive with no problem. Now the media center cannot see or log onto the drive it. It still connects to internet via my airport, I can stream you tube however it cannot see the external drive. I can access the external drive with my mac book via the airport extreme with no problem. I'm at a total loss any suggestions would be helpful.
    Thanks,
    Al

Okay, second question: How does this forum software work? According to the thread list, someone named MacWizard has replied to this thread, but I can't see it.
MacWizard, if you could email your reply to spearbrave at gmail point c0m so I can read it there, I'd appreciate it.

  • I can't see my external FAT32 drive

I have an 80GB hard drive that used to be in my MacBook Pro until I replaced it with a 320GB. All went well. Could see, read, and write to it.
I put it in an OWC enclosure and reformatted it as a MSDOS FAT32 as a single partition using Disk Utility v. 11.1 on Mac OS X 10.5.8. All seemed to go well. The drive mounted, I could see it in the Finder.
I put it into a Windows 7 machine and copied some files onto it. About 25 GB worth. Can see it and read and write to it in the Win7 machine.
Now it does not mount on the MacBook Pro, Disk Utility does not even see it.
Is there a command in terminal that will let me see it and reformat it again? The files are safe somewhere else but I would like a working drive.
Again, it does mount, read and write in the Win7 machine but the MacBook Pro, OS 10.5.8 and Disk Utility 11.1 cannot see it at all.
    Thanks in advance,
    Sue

Did you map the drive? It won't show up in Explorer automatically like a jump drive or an external drive plugged directly into the PC will.
You didn't mention the OS you're running, but what you want to do is choose "Map a network drive" and you'll see the router listed as a network device. Click on it and you should see the external drive listed. You can map it from there.

  • I can't see my external hard on my airport extreme

my external hard drive is connected to the airport extreme.  I can see it on my ipad and my iphone.  I can't see it on my macbook.  But I'm unable to access it on any of my devices.
I think I have the external hard drive configured.  But I can't access the hard drive.
    Thanks for the support.

Strange if the drive format is Mac extended (journalled).  (see:  http://help.apple.com/imovie/#mov3ac6d42c)
Can you can see the external drive in the finder?
Can you read to and write from it with the finder?
Have you tried Trashing the iMovie preferences file and re-launching?

  • MacBook can't see my home wireless network after upgrade to OSX 10.8.5

After upgrading to OSX 10.8.5, my MacBook does not detect any wireless nertworks. My iPad and iPhone work fine, my router has been rebooted, WiFi is turned on, and the ethernet connection is how I am writing this message to you via broadband. There are a half dozen wireless networks in range (according to my iPhone) but the MacBook cannot find the router I am sitting next to. Any ideas on how to correct this issue?

It appears an SMC reset was required:
HT5815 I've just done the 10.8.5 update on my MacBook Pro end of 2008, and WiFi don't work after reboot... Impossible to activate it...
Here is your other post: MacBook can't see my home wireless network after upgrade to OSX 10.8.5
If you reply to it and marked it "solved", perhaps with a link to that post (copy and paste it, or just say you performed the SMC reset) it will help others find a solution. Thanks!

  • I can't see my external hard drive on the network.

I can't see my external hard drive on the network. I have a WRT160NL router with USB. I plugged the drive in the USB and set up a share in the router config.

    macbook can't see the battery

Try starting the MB in Safe mode. If the trouble goes away in Safe mode, then there is definitely a problem with the configuration of your main account. If the problem persists under Safe mode, then it could be a hardware problem, in which case you will need to have it serviced.
