My settings revert, sometimes mid-project

There are certain aspects about the current version of inDesign that I absolutely detest:
1- Your color / stroke palette reverts to a black outline after you draw a shape and then use a different tool. You can never draw a box, adjust its location, and then draw another box with the same color specs without having to reset those color specs.
2- The eyedropper tool randomly decides to switch to the Color Scheme tool whenever it bloody well pleases. If I wanted to use the Color Scheme tool, I'd select it.
3- Despite setting my Preferences, I constantly have to go into that menu every time I open a new document because my preferences revert to unwanted settings.
I'd enjoy using inDesign so much more if these small, but tedious to mend, errors could be resolved.

(1) Starting with your headline issue, "My settings revert," I'd first suggest a troubleshooting technique. Try restoring your InDesign preferences. This explains how:
Trash, Replace, Reset, or Restore the application Preferences
You haven't mentioned what operating system you're using so that would help.
If you're using a recent version of Mac OS X, if you use the "delete files" method described in that article, you'll need to get to your <Home> Library folder which normally is hidden. In the Finder, hold down the Option key while choosing Go > Library to view it.
(2) When you choose a new tool, and you're viewing the Fill and Stroke buttons on the Control panel, or bottom of tools, and when there is nothing selected, what you're viewing is the default Fill and Stroke attributes for your current file. You can change those in your current file when nothing is selected, and they will be changed. If you want to set a default for all new files, close all files and set the attributes.
(3) There are other threads with complaints for the behavior of the Eyedropper and Color Theme tool. I'd agree with you that the shortcuts for these tools need to be improved.

Changed operating system mid project in Final Cut Pro

I was working on a Final Cut project and changed operating systems from Snow leopard to Mavericks in mid project. I have since changed to Mountain Lion as many of my programs were not comparable to run with Mavericks. My FCP project takes ages to render and auto saves every minute even though I have set it to save less often. Are these problems the result of changing systems. I only had a sense this was so after opening an old project and working on it and it running smoothly with fast render etc.

Do a test. With the range tool make a very short range selection of your project and Share>DVD. In the export dialoge >Settings, choose Hard Drive for Output Device. Click on the Add button for menu background. When the next window appears, hit cancel. See if it exports and burns a disk image, If it does, try the complete project.
BTW, is your project length 79 minutes or 79 seconds?

SETTINGS REVERTING

Hey all
So this is a weird one, has anyone every opened a project and the sequences within that project have reverted to DV-PAL from 10bit Uncompressed when it was saved?? This is a large file thats causing problems with crashing and the lot but Sequence Settings reverting?? Very weird and #$%&ing annoying. If anyone knows anything about this please let me know.

Hi MB - don't know what's going on there and I haven't seen or heard of that particular trick from fcp, so it must be you !
No - what i'd do with something flaky like that is to trash my prefs first. See how it behaves afterward. I'd then try a reboot.
If it's still flaky then it may relate to the proj.
I'd start a new proj with the desired settings and drag everything from the old browser to the new one.
Close the old proj and try again from there.
edit: You have checked your different seq settings using the Seq menu>Settings ?

Successful update to 10.1 in mid-project?

I'm near completion of a video project, and I've used Migration Assistant to move my apps and files to a new Mac. Old system was a Mac Pro running Lion and FCP X 10.0.8. I still have the old machine and an HD with backup copies of all my FCP project and event files.
Trying to decide whether it's safer to work in the old version of FCP in Mavericks, or to update FCP and let it convert the files to its new housekeeping system.
At worst I'd lose any work I'd done since making the backup of my files, and would have to redo them on the old system. But I'd rather not.
Has anyone successfully updated FCP to 10.1 in the middle of a project?

I didn't try updating to 10.1 in mid-project. I would have if necessary, but in your case I can't imagine how that could be a good idea.
It was a major organizational update, but a very modest feature update. Updating always carries risks, which you have minimized by keeping copies of the app, projects and events on the other Mac. But we can't eliminate all risks (like time expended on troubleshooting) and it's hard to see how going from 10.0.9 to 10.1 would create enough advantages to make it worthwhile.
Once you wrap up the project, the update itself is quick. However, it will save going down a lot of dead end roads to get a really solid understanding of the new library structure and how it will affect your work. Apple has a good doc on this and there are many free tutorials by solid FCP X instructors such as this.

ProRes project - Convert to Proxy mid project.??????

Im working on a pop video...shot on a Canon 550d.
Ive imported the footage using the CANON conversion... I choose Pro Res .....(Not Proxy)
50fps 1280 x720...
Started editing and realized that I cant run Multicam on my set up.....grinds to a halt ( 6 angles)....
How can I convert to Pro Rez Proxy mid project and carry on working , then go back to the full Pro res for master.
Ive messed around with Media manager.... but not quite sure as the right wrokflow...?
Ideally I would like to edit in DV PAL ( like I used to on my old FZ1)..... BUT the system media manager wouldnt allow me to work in DV 25fps....
As the orginal foootage is all 50fps....
BUT PROXY may be the way to go....
Also I converted about 10 clips using Cinema Tools to 25fps for slow motion, this has given me exactly the same file names for the slow mo clips as the master clips...
Thus creating confustion when trying to re connect to higher rez formats.
ALL HELP greatly welcome....... .. Im sure im making it more difficult than it needs be...

When I open a video which I have altered the AV settings on in another program, the settings revert to the initial settings. Can I edit the color and brightness settings permanently in Quicktime 7?

I need to change the color and brightness for a video file for a presentation and cannot figure out how to change them permanently when I open the video file in Powerpoint. Any suggestions?

The A/V Controls window settings revert when the window is closed.
You would need the "Pro" upgrade to QuickTime Player and then use the Export dialog / Filters button to make a new version of the file.

Is it OK to update to RH 9 from RH 8 mid project?

Can I easily work on a RH 8 project in RH 9? I may need to switch to the RH 9 version but I am in the middle of a project, and wonder if this would have any adverse effects.

Once you open a project in RH9 there is no going back. A message is issued warning you of this when you upgrade. For this reason it is better to take a backup of your RH8 project before doing anything. As for whether it is OK to upgrade to RH9 mid project, we can't say because we do not know what is inside your project and how you are using it. Personally I would never upgrade mid project, but that is just me. I recommend you download the RH9 trial, take the required backups, open your projects in RH9 and thoroughly test them before making any decision.

This is really becoming a pain since every time I get into FlexBuilder, I have to hit my project and set the required version back to 10.0.0. (It keeps reverting to 9.x) Since I am using the new FileReference enhancements in Flash10, this is mandatory to avoid compiler errors.
I still have no way to automate the build process since there is nothing on the build machine to perform this action.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Transferring computers mid project/ Switching versions of InDesign

Hello All -
I have two questions:
#1 When transfering between two computers (using the same version of InDesign) mid project, how can I keep the fonts in tact. I have the same fonts downloaded on both computers, but when I open a project from the second computer, the fonts do not transfer. I know how to relink the photos, but I am at a loss when it comes to the fonts.
#2 I work for a nonprofit organization and we are making the transition from InDesign CC to InDesign 5.5 (quite the downgrade, I know.) What is the best way to keep all of the projects in tact before the transition is made? Is the best way to save them as an IDML? Also, how do I keep the fonts in tact for this transition between versions of InDesign as well?

1. Package the file and you’ll get a documents fonts folder.
2. Best way? It’s the only way and I wouldn’t count on everything being perfect. Text will undoubtedly reflow.

Moving Scratch Disk mid project

I am currently in the middle of a FCE4 project, but I would like to move my scratch disk to an external hard drive. Will I run into any hiccups if I do this mid-project?

So can I specify certain scratch disks for different projects? I read in the manual and in Tom's book "Final Cut Express 4: Editing Workshop" that if I select numerous destinations for scratch disks, it will choose the one with the most space and then move on to the next one once that destination is full. But if I have several hard drives set as scratch disks, can I simply choose a specific one when I start a new project in FCE4? If so, how do I do this?

Desktop and settings reverted to default suddenly!

Somehow my desktop, profile, settings, well everything reverted back to default. I can't even seem to "right click" with two fingers and regular click any more!
The only thing I can see being the cause of this is when I opened up Open Office 3.2 to write, it gave me some registration options and wouldn't start until I filled in the Name, Initial and what not so I just type my name there (I name I hadnt used anywhere else on the computer like home folder etc). After that, I noticed Firefox had crashed, so I force quit it. Then I clicked my messenged AdiumX icon by accident when trying to restart Firefox and I noticed all my settings, theme and everything was gone there. I restarted the computer and found myself back with the default blue background and a clean desktop...
Everything seem to still be available in my folders and Applications, but all settings and what not are gone.

But I dont understand how to fix this still. There is only one "user folder" and it is the same name as always, not changed or anything. I have only used one account and it was also admin status. User name and short name are the same in User config panel.

Hi Carl, sometimes it can happen spontaneously too, though quite infrequent.
First we need to make sure there is no directory damage.
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
If the Disk is fine, hopefully you can quit all Applications, drag those item in each folder in Shared to the proper location in your folders then reboot.

Batch capture settings do not match project settings

Please note audio setting for project 48kHz (16 bit) audio.
When I set for batch capture by creating off-line clips using the "Log Clip" option the off-line clip shows audio as
32KHZ 16-bit everyting else is correct as project settings.
Just prior to creating the off-line batch capture clip I had sucessfully captured from the same device using the same tape shot with the above settings including 48khz 16-bit audio by using standard " Capture" by setting in & out then clicking Capture>In/Out.
I've looked at capture settings etc...unable to determine to change audio settings etc or why the audio settings under batch capture do not conform to project settings...
Any ideas?

Well now...having negated all the possibilities you listed, I decided to do a an actual batch capture with clips which I previously logged which reported audio at 32kHz instead of the project setting of 48kHz:
1. two clips were selected from the same device/tape ( both selected from the logging util which erroneously reported audio at 32kHz) for the batch
2. both clips captured "flawlessly"
3. both clips after the batch capture then reported audio as being 48kHz
Btw, I also did a batch capture from the same device/tape in Pr 6.x...and it reported and captured at 48khz...I must say, I must prefer the legacy version of Pr 6 for batch capture which creates a log .pbl file which can then be easily exported as a csv to and .xls etc..IMO, much more useful...and useable..

Selecting correct settings for a new project

I'm about to start my first project using Elements and the final output for the project will be need to be a H264 or a “WMV” file which which can be uploaded to an FTP site. It will also be displayed in front of a group on a screen (size is 7.5’x10’.)
What is the most optimal project settings I should use when I start the new project? Something in the AVCHD catagory? (Using NTSC).

Yes Premiere Elements has several H.264 options under the AVCHD tab including output at 1080p and 720p with various frame rates. If you only have Photoshop Elements you will be limited to making a wmv file. If you do have Premiere Elements you will get best advice at it’s own forum.
