My shared folder doesn't play well with others.

On work iMac I do a lot of development work on multiple Windows virtual machines running on a local Win-server thru MS Remote Desktop Connection. My intent is to use a shared folder on my iMac (w/ TimeMachine back-up) to store files worked on using these virtual machines (they are not routinely backed up).
Get Info shows share folder checked with Read & Write privileges to Me, admin, & everyone.
When opening file from virtual machine using a MS Office app' documents open in 'Read Only' mod. If I try to Save-As the same filename, I'm locked out and have to return to iMac Get Info and then Apply to all enclosed items. :-(
How can I make this work the way I want?

You need to provide more information.
What do you mean the Mac "locks up"? Macs typically just see the network and connect and PCs do too.
I would not think it is virus or trojan causing the problem.
Have you checked your Belkin router's settings?
How is your network set up ? What can you tell us?
How about your Network preferences on the Mac?
tell us more.
What happens if the Mac is connected and then you turn on the PC? What happens?

Am I Understanding Correctly That iPhoto Doesn't Work Well With Others?

After reading all the previous posts and topics on iPhoto vs. LR2 and such with RAW/NEF file formats, they simply don't work well with each other, right?
Basically, what I am trying to understand like a lot of others is that the way they read/write file info is dramatically different.
I just started using LR2 in the trial period and maybe I'm just not used to it yet but I still like using iPhoto for organizing my library of photos; it seems a lot easier with the folders and albums and such.
I also started using Nikon's RAW format NEF and working with them in iPhoto is a loser it seems.
Other than the obvious increase and control and options availabe for editing in LR, is iPhoto all that bad with working with NEF or RAW files? What is the downside to it?

The problem is that Lightroom and iPhoto are essentially the type of application.
They are both Photo Managers, they both want to own and control the pics, to be your central “go to” app for whenever you want to get a photo. Obviously only one can be the primary application.
Lightroom - a rather more expensive application - is a professional app, aimed at the Pro Photographer. It’s a rather more powerful app in pretty much every way. For a point of comparison, Lightroom is closer to Apple’s Aperture rather than iPhoto.
On top of that, earlier versions of Lightroom had a bug in the way that it wrote metadata to the file and iPhoto was unable to import these files - tho’ I believe that’s been fixed since.
As to the RAW/NEF issue, There’s no point dealing in filetypes. Each model of camer produces a different RAW file, so what you need to tell us is the Model of Nikon you use. For instance iPhoto imports the NEFs from my D40 with no problems.
As to “working well with others” iPhoto integrates with just abou every app on your mac, make the pics available in every ‘Open...’ dialogue in the OS, with Mail app and an any image editor you care to mention.

We love apple email, but it does not play wall with other venders when you want to use your own domain (lags, disconnections, etc.)? What vendor should we use to make it push and work well? We want to stay with Apple Mail.

Help, our AppleMail does not play well with other Vendord to use our own domain. iCloud mail works great, but so far others we have tried lag, disconnec, etc. not nearly as good as icloud mail. Should we try exchange or office 365 plans with Apple Mail/ a lot more expensive?

Microsoft Exchange is the best business solution, Office 365 will give a hosted version that works well, as you noted it is not the cheapest. You should also look at Zimbra, an excellent service.

Does Time Capsule play well with older Airport devices?

Hello. Today I am likely coming home with a Time Capsule and intend to rebuild my home wireless network.
I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on the value/worth of attempting to connect older airport devices to the new network? I have a VERY old (1st gen?) Express, a 2nd or 3rd Express, and an Airport Extreme which, here on my lunch break away from home, I'm frankly not sure which age it is. I have been using the Extreme as the Base Station and intend to wipe it and set up the TC as the Base Station.
There are a few areas of our house that don't get good signals currently. If they STILL don't, should I try to connect any of these older devices as extenders? Or will they not play well with the TC because of their different letters (g/n/etc.?)
Thanks in advance. We'd been planning on getting a TC for a long while but found out this week that our Extreme is somehow getting in the way of our network connection... So I'm hoping that a brand new set-up will improve our speed and entire system. We have a household of many devices--one iMac and more than four iOS devices (potentially depending on who's awake) running on a 60Mbp/4 upload system. For a long time we've had internet but at 23-26 Mbp tops.
Any of your thoughts or ideas would be welcome.

Old G wireless express should be retired.. it will not work well in the current network. Although people do use them just for audio use.. the later OS have ceased to be able to set them up. G extreme is of no use.
You can use anything that is N wireless.. but you need to be sane and rational about using a router that is 3-6years old.. as it might cause as much problems as it fixes. Certainly there is nothing wrong with having a go.. as long as you are not too hopeful.
The best way to get wireless in a dark corner is to run ethernet over to that area.. and run a wireless AP there. Your N apple airport can function as AP. Even using EOP (ethernet over power) can sometimes work.
If you try to extend wireless wireless to the dark zone.. you cannot place the AP in the dark zone.. as it will get no signal to extend.. it needs to be able to pick up good signal and still have sufficient range to reach the end of your zone. That suggests if it doesn't work now.. it won't work in this new role either.. but no skin off having a try.

Wondering if the DSL-N66U plays well with BT youview before i order one has anyone got any experiance with these ive noticed inthe firmware update notes some stuff todo with iptv. Would anyone recormend one of these for use with youview to replace a HH4 and ORModem?

Can I get an older release of Firefox? 36.0 does not play well with Windows 7.

Firefox 36.0.4 does not play well with Windows 7. If it opens at all, it freezes within a minute so the screen goes pale and I get the classic spinning circle of death. Then the header says (not responding).
Ideally I would like to drop back to version 32 or 33, but 34 and 35 had fewer problems.
Can I find older versions anywhere?

Video clips in iPhone 4s doesn't play well

Recently the video clips including video camera and any clips in Facebook in my iPhone 4s doesn't play well. Has anyone experienced this before? Any ideas to solve it?

Basics from the User Guide are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new device. If you've tried ALL of those steps and you're still having problems, you'll need to bring your phone into Apple for evaluation.

Have a look in System Preferences -> Sound -> Output.
Plug the speakers out. Do you now see "Internal Speaker" as the name from the Built-in device? If you replug your speakers, is it now changing to "Headphone?

Why won't iTunes 11 play well with my printer.

I made the mistake of downloading 11 before reading feedback. I will not do that before 11.0.1. Has anybody tried this update? Have they brought the old search feature back...unless there is some way to set it back to the way it previously worked and I just haven't figured it out yet.
In addition to the loss of ease in manipulating and searching for my music, I'm having problems with iTunes communicating with my printer.
Is this unique or typical for the update? It always played well with my printer before!
Since the 11 update, my laptop crashes while waiting to print or it prints with all items of the playlist printed on top of each other in a big sploch, rendering it unreadable.
Any solutions???.

Whilst it's possible there's some obscure setting somewhere, I _really_ doubt it.
My Apple history dates back to a, then current, Mac+ and I currently do embedded [Android] fw development... so this is more of a bug report than flailing user.

Play chess with others over iPhone?

On websites like RedHotPawn.com, I can play chess with others in a "correspondence" fashion. I.e. I login to the website and see that my opponent has made a move. I then make a move. My opponent will then make a move when convenient (i.e. this is not real-time, but it works well and is fun).
I would like to do this from an iPhone when I buy one. I'm guessing I can just hit that website from my iPhone, but was wondering if there was a more iPhone-specific offering that anyone knew of.
I guess ideally a website like RHP would detect the user's device and create a webpage acccordingly?
I'm interested in any info anyone may have to offer.

As long as the website you normally play on doesn't require a plug-in like flash player then you should be able to navigate too and use it on the iphone. You can also check the iphone section of this website and see if there are any chess webapps that you can play over the network, there probably are some.

When you say "print", do you mean the text is correct in your InDesign file? If you export the document to a PDF, is it still correct? Final test: if you print the PDF to your printer (making sure you use the same driver and setting), is it wrong? Then it's your printer driver, trying to be smart when it should not. Locate a Settings dialog where you can switch off options such as this one. Were I a betting person, I'd tell you to look for something called "Auto-correct mirrored documents".

try running it in either 32 or 64bit mode and see if this changes the experience. Locate the icon in Finder, right click "get-info" on it and see the checkmarks "run in 32bit mode" ..
on Lion some users had trouble opeining pb when "iglasses" was installed, also a thing to check.
Else repair permissions of the disk, using Apples disk utility app.

Sun one server 6.0 doesn't work well with explorer

We've sun one server 6.0 sp4 running in a sparc server as SSL server and too as common server on port 80. The most our clients , 95%, are explorer browser users.
The server has known bugs with SSL3 , interoperatibility with MSIE problem 532427. The solutions suggested in the server documentation don't work. We tryed the solutions suggested many times and in few time we got complaints from clients, people get "this page can't be displayed". I had to set the server to work with SSL2 only , althought security's reports tell that this protocol is not safe.
The second bug is concern the latencies loading pages with explorer. I apply the solution suggested, KeepAliveQueryMeanTime 1, it doesn't work well too. We don't feel the latencies on new machines or light browsers as avant , but we still feel these latencies with old machines or if the users uses modem. A lot of people still see very strong latencies.
I feel the server wasn't tested enough with explorer browser , it has so many compatibility problems with this browser.I think for the most webmasters the perfect compatibility with explorer is very important.
We payed for this server and it is worst than apache ,apache group fixed the SSL problem long time ago. Only one thing we need doesn't work well in apache then we contenue to use sun one server. But this diference is not enough to justify the use of this server if sun don't fix these problems. I'm talking about problems they exist more than 1 year, they were when i installed the server then i contenue to work with iplanet 4.1 and SSL2. I read the new version server characteristics, version 6.1 , i didn't find anything telling that these problems were fixed.

Most of the .mov and .AVI files doesn't play anymore with QT 7 or 10

I'm running OS 10.7.5 and most of the .mov files that were generated with Quicktime 7 doesn't play anymore, except in VLC.
I used QT7 because it can still crop and edit videos, instead of QT 10 that came with the system.
QT7 has a also a very nice feature that allow to reset the image ratio, which is sometime very usefull.
I shall say that videos came from a digital recorder I used to tape the TV and those files came as .AVI
Anyway, overnight (probably after an update of iTunes or any part of the system) QT 7 nor 10 can play those files anymore !
Each time I try to open a file with QT it says I need a codec, and leads to the DIVX download page, but installing this codec doesn't solve my problem.
QT7 was a very fine software and worked until now.
Why an update makes my system go backward ??!?
I'm a huge fan of Apple, but that is not acceptable !!!
It just makes me want to purchase on older mac and go back to 10.6 !!!
