My shift key is not responding again!!

The shift key has stopped responding. I've restarted many times. Help me

It's probably some dirt or something under the key.
Does it press down differently than the ones around it, perhaps a bit harder than normal? Gently lift up the edges and blow hard, or twist the end of a paper towel (till it's pointy) and push it around under there.

  • My "caps lock" key and "P" key do not respond on my 2009 macbook pro unibody

I recently bought a used macbook pro for university. When I bought it the guy who had it before me was running windows 7 on the machine. (why ruin a mac with windows software? I have no idea) I love macs and everything about them so I decided to wipe the hard drive clean and run OSX like any other normal mac user... well now the "caps lock" and "P" keys do not respond at all!!! I've checked my keyboard settings and keyboard and character viewer and its only those keys that do not respond!! Any ideas how I could reset the hardware? (I have a feeling he had to configure the keys to windows software) And yes, I did see the keys work when I bought it!! Does anybody know apples policy on applecare? like what would I need to bring in to redeem it? (I know this computer is warrantied until 2013)

I got the exact same roblem- you can see that, "p" missing in the word problem.
And Caps lock doesn't work either.
A few hours ago, I had problem with Shift keys. They were stuck, I don't know which one but everything would be capatalized and minimizing windows would be very slow. Then the repairman at a Mac Support center (authorized reseller, no Apple stores here) took off the back cover and cleaned a small chord or something and the Shift problem vanished and this one appeared. The guy thinks it's related to keyboard- must be!- and I need to change it. Could there be any other option?
ps: I copied and pasted all the 'p's in this piece.

Is it a damaged keyboard ?
The laptop is just 2 months old, will Apple replace it with a new one if its indeed a damaged keyboard or just repair, I use it for official purposes so being without a laptop is not much of an option.

No one here works for Apple, so we don't know what Apple might or might not do.  If it's a genuine defect, they will of course repair it under warranty.  It is not their responsibility if it effects your ability to work or not, so that's on you.
If, however, they determine that the key is problematic as a result of your misuse of the laptop, then everything is on you.  And trust me, if they find a glob of dried up beer or coffee there, they will charge you.
Your only choice is to take it in for repair.

  • Keys do not respond

Some of the keys do not respond when trying to key in text and numbers. For instance the upshift keys does not go to uppercase but to the number keys in Notes. In the number keypad such as when you key in your PIN code the numbers 7,8,9 would not respond. I restored it so I no longer have to enter a PIN code but it is near impossible to text, email or even sign in to iTunes

If you restored to factory settings/new iPod via iTunes (Not via Settings>General>Reset>Erase all Content and Setting) and still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem.

  • During typing sporadically keys do not respond immediately.

Sometimes (not constant) when typing, the key does not respond immediately. If I wait 15-30 sec. Then it responds as we'll as additional keys I may have tapped. Also when attempting to save an email to a specific folder, I tap the "save" icon then in the left when I tap on the specific email account to get to th specific folder, the iPad 4 freezes momentarily and after a few seconds (5-15) it decides to continue. This doesn't happen all the time only intermittently.

Hi, and welcome to the Palm Community Forums.
It seems likely that your digitizer (which is the top portion of the screren which recognizes your stylus taps and converts them into commands) is failing, although there are things that you can try to diagnose it.  One thing is to remove any screen protector you have installed, and see if the behavior continues.  The second is to fold over the corner of a piece of paper  and use the folded edge as a "scoop" by sliding it underneath the frame that goes around the screen.  The idea is to pull out any dirt or grit that has accumulated under there over time, which can interfere with the digitizer's function.
If that does not remedy the problem, you can try one of several software fixes such as DigiFix which can help in some cases.
If none of that works, you might just be in need of a replacement digitizer.  They can be found at www.pdaparts.com or www.usedpdaparts.com and you can either do the repair yourself, or they will do it for you at a reasonable cost.
All of these solutions, and more, are discussed in this lengthy thread in the Hardware board.
    Good luck.

  • USB keyboard shift keys suddenly not working

For some reason, when I woke up my MacBook Pro this morning, both shift keys on my aluminium USB keyboard were not working. I'm using the keyboard with a Magic Mouse and LED cinema display connected to my MacBook. When I hold either shift key in combination with any other key, either nothing is typed, or there will be random characters typed, occasionally.
I ran AppleJack on auto to see if there were any problems. There were a few preferences it corrected, but nothing major was wrong. I connected the keyboard to a friend's MacBook Pro, and the shift keys did not work on his machine either. Caps Lock does work. I've tried canned air. I don't remember spilling anything on it.
Any idea about what I can try to get it working, or is it broken? Thanks,
    -Jeff

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings (if you can)
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.

    Hi Abu-Bakr,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP Notebook and the shift keys not working correctly. I find that in most cases a keyboard that stops responding or some keys don't work is generally a keyboard is stuck cleaning might be the only option. Here is a document on how to clean the keyboard.
If a small vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment is available, use it to clear the keyboard of debris. A can of compressed air can be used to blow out particles that get in between the keys. I would be happy to assist if needed. How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
Please respond with which Operating System you are running:

  • Punctuation and comma keys do not respond

    Macbook Air 11" - 2012 running Lion.
The period and the comma keys appear to be "dead" - not responding, also not when shift or other keys pressed simultaneous.
All other keys appear to function as usual.
There was no prior incident - they simply stopped working all of a sudden.
Hoping someone can help - either with an idea on how to test what the problem may be (software or hardware functionality test)
    - or with a cure...
    Thanks!

Did you find the solution ?
I just got this same problem on 2014-12-24 with my Mac Air 2011 version
    - After update to Yosemite OS - the same problem remains
    - Notice that I can't do period or comma here (nor the the upper case of the same keys for "greater than" and "less than" symbols
    - Could it be a hardware problem ?
    - 2 things occurred at about the same period of time when the problem showed up
      - (1) I was brushing my teeth with baking soda and sneezed with 2 drops of liquid on the computer (I don't think the liquid drops
were on the 2 problematic keys
      - (2) while trying to get a bit torrent but was interceded by another software download recommendation which I ignored
and closed the website - computer did act strange and not sure if there was any software damage
Can "Apple Support team" reply and address this problem ?

  • SHIFT key does not work - one the first letter gets capitalized

When typing a word in ALL CAPS by pressing the SHIFT key, only the first character appears in CAPS. All subsequent characters appear in lower case even though the SHIFT key is continually pressed.
The workaround is to backspace over the lower case character(s) one at a time as they are typed and type them again in CAPS, or use the CAPS LOCK key.
This problem surfaced after a string of updates (Combo 10.5.2 update; Graphics update; keyboard firmware update) and I cannot be certain which one (if any) is responsible for the snafu.
As someone who types a lot, I urgently need to have this fixed. Thanks.
    Andreas

I solved the SHIFT key problem. As it turns out, it was not the result of any update or buggy piece of software code, but a conscious (albeit erroneous) decision on my part.
A few days ago, I installed a new version of TypeIt4Me and in perusing the various settings, I selected the “No DOuble CAps” option. I misinterpreted what this option would do. It modifies the behavior of the SHIFT key which I then thought was a bug in my system.
TypeIt4Me, btw, by Riccardo Ettore, is a wonderful application. I have used it for more than a decade, and I can honestly say it is the most valuable shareware utility I have ever installed on my macs. I strongly and unconditionally recommend it to all mac users.

    Hey @Dylanbilo01 ,
    Welcome to the HP forums.
I understand you're having issues with the keyboard on your Slatebook.
Clear all cache on the PC: Settings > Storage > Cached Data. You should have the option to erase all the cached data here.
Hard reset: While the PC is on, press and hold the power button for 8+ seconds to force shut down. Turn it back on and see if that helps.
Factory reset: Make sure you backup any important files or information first and then when ready got to Settings > Backup & reset > Factory data reset.
