My shuffle distorts . . .

My shuffle distorts after a few minutes, until the music is all noise.  If I turn it off and leave it off for a minute, then turn it on, it's fixed -- until the next time.  What's going on?

Greetings grsaunde,
I'm not sure which iPod shuffle you have, but there are some things to note when playing podcasts.
iPod shuffle: Playing audiobooks and podcasts - Apple Support
When using iPod shuffle (1st and 2nd generation), if iPod shuffle is set to shuffle songs it will play all the audio files on iPod shuffle except audiobooks and podcasts*. To play an audiobook or podcast, set the switch on iPod shuffle to play in order .
When using iPod shuffle (3rd generation), podcasts and audiobooks will not be played when content is played from All Songs. If content is played from a playlist synced from iTunes, audiobooks and podcasts will only be played if the iPod's switch is set to play in order . In addition to playlists synced from iTunes, iPod shuffle (3rd generation) will create a special playlist for each audiobook synced and one for podcasts. When accessing these special playlists, audiobook and podcast content will play whether the iPod is set to play in order or shuffle songs . Podcast are sorted by alphabetical order and then by episode date.
All the best,
Nubz

  • IPod Shuffle Music Distorted

I got an IPod Shuffle for Christmas and I downloaded music and it worked fine for about an hour and now the music sounds distorted (can't make out the words on songs, although you can hear music...). Is this is a hardware problem or do I need to reset/reload?

I'm having the same issue on a 1st generation shuffle. Running the reset utility does not appear to solve this issue.
From my post on the same issue at iPod Forums (http://forums.ilounge.com/showthread.php?p=1211599#post1211599):
+My uninformed guess is that this is an issue with the audio encoding. You used to hear this kind of frequency distortion on early (bad) MP3 codecs.+
+The problem described in the original post is not an issue with the headphone jack. It is rather like a karaoke effect where you kill the vocals by eliminating any signal in the "center" (instruments are panned right or left).+

  • Questions on the equaliser function in itunes on the shuffle

    hi
if i activated and applied the equaliser settings to the mp3s in itunes and downloaded to the shuffle, would the shuffle still play the mp3 using the equaliser settings?
or this can only be applied to ipod nano and above models?
kindly advice as i'm in more favour of the shuffle's simplicity and size compared to the nano on my next purchase.
    thanks!

    thanks for the replies!
i find basic simplicity very attractive in the shuffle but really sad for it to lack the eq function.
understandably it served as an affordable, stripped down, most basic form of no-fuss music player which is super light, tiny(at that time of 1st gen shuffle) and a very attractive gadget with its white glossy finish.
it held the most basic forms of controls which we would use almost 95% of the time when we're using to listen to music.
when i had it, i hooked it up to a pair of sony ex700sl(i think) which really boosts up the bass spectrum!
but since having to owned a iriver mp3 player before(with its extreme bass eq), i was not really satisfied with the sound be lacked in the low ends.
many ppl might disagree with me, but deep bass will give the songs a "pressence", of not being easily tired from listening to the song again and again.
and i'm intrigued by how most ppl defined "good quality" in playbacks of mp3 players. does it mean it sounds clear w/o distortation, or the tones are clearly defined from each other, or it sounded life-like, as if in live concert?
yes i know the shuffle's not as delicately featured as its bigger brothers, but if only it play eq settings to the song it would be awesome!
hope its next generation does! =)

  • How to fix sound distortion on an iPod?

I have a 4th generation iPod shuffle. When i use ear buds with it, the sound will be fine at first, but after a few days the sound will start to get distorted. If I mess with the ear buds for a little I can fix the sound for a few seconds. After a while the ear buds will stop working with the iPod all together. If I buy a new pair of ear buds the whole thing starts all over again. The ear buds work fine on my PC regardless of how well they work on my iPod and when I restore my iPod it's work fine for few minutes. Any suggestions?

Per this previous discussion you can't.

  • My ipod Shuffle 4g turns on the button lock as soon i turn on my ipod!

Hello, I turned my Ipod Shuffle 4th gen on as Normal, but as soon I Turned it on, the button lock turns on automatically, and becomes unresponsive, I cant turn it off! I Can only somehow control my ipod with the remote on my headphones... is there a soulution?????

GOD i did pretty much the same think , idropped mine on a chair nd it dented on the lower volume button and at first there was this crack on the screen like a smurf punched the volume button nd left a crater. After i touched the crack a little bit freaking out, the whole screen went white with a small black spot( like the one on yours, but ALOT smaller) after a little while , like 10 min in my pocket, i could see the top of the screen normally(enough to see the time and date while its locked, but the spot is still there nd the rest of the screen is really white. i can make out things easier on the right side, but everything on the left is bright and distorted as if the loer part of the screen was cut in half nd the left side slid down.
But anyways i dont think we can fix this , ive tried pushing out the dent nd now my ipod just has seisures( the screen flashes like a strobe light as it goes from white and distorted to normal nd back)
Might just hav to pay the $99 for apple to replace/repair it

  • My ipod shuffle 4g wont play music from a cd

my ipod shuffle 4g used to play music, and i gave it to my dad. he synced it with a different pc and now music wont play. he put roughly 15 songs from a cd or two and only one plays, however it seems like a non-ear damaging version of static (that's the closest description i can get). the pc has WinXP SP2 Home 900MHz 256mb ram but i noticed iTunes when you open the all about it thingy (how to use it, etc not help but an overview) the videos become corrupt and if they do play they horribly lag and have color distortion (nothing is actually wrong with my monitor tho), and when you try to eject an ipod it says nothing is in that drive and you have to use My Computer to do it. its mysterious because on my Win7 laptop it used to function just fine, with music that came with Win7, iTunes Store content, and liek 5 cd songs. anyone know what's wrong? i haven't used iTunes in a while so I forgot a lot about how to use the deep menus and troubleshooting, etc. the pc is very old (he bought it from a gaming uhh... it was a place that used to be popular for gaming when computers had windows 2k, xp, me, and early versions of mac osx so the computer was very old and the place was going to close) about idk but it had Win2k and he upgraded it to the current version of xp. and the warranty on the iPod expired last month, because i bought it on my 12th bday, and i got frustrated because now i can't take it to an apple store for help free of charge or send it in for free warranty repair. grrr...so any help is MUCH MUCH MUCH appreciated.

Did you select the option to play the music via BT?
    Did it work before?
Do the spkearker work OK on another device?

  • Distorted and disarrayed images after uploading edited page

I had two text boxes with hyperlinks not functioning properly (in Safari, though not in iWeb), so I tried a few methods to fix the problem, none of which have resulted in success. I've deleted the malfunctioning boxes and copied and pasted from other pages. I've deleted them and copied and pasted from within the page, changing the text and linkage to suit. I've deleted them and recreated brand new boxes. I've selected all objects and deleted them and tried to copy and paste them peice meal. When I publish to a folder, and view from my computer, the new pages show distorted sizes, text, and have deleted boxes in other locations. It seems like the png numbers are assigned "out of order" between the html file and the reference folder. I then tried to bring the original file off of my live server and replace the bum file in my published folder on the computer. I'm now realizing that iWeb does not use the published folder during editing.
    1) Why is this happening?
    2) How do I get it back? (can I import file information back into iWeb rather than into the published folder?)
I notice that someone else had the hyperlink issue on the latest version of iWeb, so it doesn't seem like an upgrade is necessary/would fix the problem.

So do you have any thoughts about why, after editing a few objects and reposting, the images were shuffled and distorted (even though they look fine in iWeb)?
Bradley ~ No, sorry. Perhaps someone else will chip in here soon with a suggestion. Meanwhile there are some things you could try in the +"Fix iWeb"+ section here:

  • Why does my shuffle have little skips in it during playback?

I have restored, reloaded, and completely started from scratch with putting music on my shuffle. When I get done and listen to it, there are little noise distortions on and off throughout the songs. Kind of like an electronic blip or a little sound skip. Apple said my cds could be the problem because the shuffle is 100% sound clarity, I just find this odd because I have directly loaded 1800 songs onto ITunes from my collection, and it happens in all of them. Even better, I just spent 10 hours converting them all into MP3 with a higher bitrate to maybe fix this. Didn't work. Any suggestions. This is the second shuffle and they have both done this.

It seems that my pc does not like the shuffle. I put it on another pc and do not have any problems with the sound.

  • Distortion/stutter/computer freezes between songs with itunes 7.0.2.16

Everything was fine with itunes 6.x; then I upgraded to 7.0.2.16. Now when I play itunes on the Sony computer, for 10 to 15 seconds between songs the music is distorted or stutters when the crossfader is on. When the crossfader is OFF, then the distortion is gone, but the computer still freezes. Also itunes freezes for this time period. I have noticed the following: CPU usage shoots up from 6% to 70%. If I am using any other application (ie. program, email, etc.) it freezes for these few seconds. I have to stop playing/close itunes to do anything else on the computer. I have tried all the suggestions Apple has listed, Q time settings, updating the sound card driver, etc. to no avail!
The only solution I have found was to convert my itunes library to MP3, and created a play list in Windows Media Player. Every thing is fine, the music plays GREAT! itunes at one time was state of the art, now just junk!
Any help would be most appreciate!
SONY VAIO   Windows XP   iPod Shuffle; itunes 7.0.2.16, SoundMax Digital Audio

I am having the same exact problem. My computer freezes for 3-5 seconds when the song has about 5 seconds left. I think it may have to do with the new "gapless" playback. This is garbage, I can't even use iTunes anymore. Have you been able to find any answers. If not, I just want to downgrade, but I don't know if that is possible.
I tried to install an older version but iTunes said that I have an newer version of iTunes on the computer, which is true, but the new version, 7.0.2.16, is not working. I hope someone finds something back from Apple because I don't want to reorganize all my music due to their bug.

  • With EQ music sounds distorted

I have to warn you that my english is not so good, so I will write it in spanish too if you want to translate. Thanks.
Well, I bought a new iPod nano 3G 8gb 2 days ago, and I discovered that using an EQ preset, bass sounds distoted. I upraded to 1.0.3 but it still distorting. I know that it's a problem of the iPod or its software. What can I do? Thanks
Gracias

I'm afraid this is a common problem (happens on every iPod model that I've owned -- that's five different models -- early 2nd generation iPod, shuffle 1, shuffle 2, iPhone, and nano). Basically, any of the equalizers that boost the bass frequencies will distort when playing at anything other than the very lowest volume settings. Of course, the source material affects the results as any bass heavy recording will have more of a problem. I suspect this happens because the iPods don't have enough output power to cleanly drive such high levels of bass. In fact, I suspect this is a common problem on a lot of MP3 players (not just the iPods).
The workaround (if you want to call it that) is to use only the mildest forms of equalization and then keep the volume levels fairly low. Because of this I almost never use equalization on the iPods. A better solution is just to use a set of headphones that are both efficient (low power) and which have better bass response. For that purpose I can recommend either the Koss Porta Pros or the Sennheiser PX100s (note, these are headband style, on-the-ear type headphones, NOT earbuds).

  • IPod shuffle completely totally dead?

Tonight I charged my shuffle and updated the songs on my computer as usual. However, 15 minutes or so into listening once it was away from the computer, it turned off mid-song. At first I thought the battery had died, but the lights on it are completely unresponsive - no flashing, no turning on - no sign of life at all. I haven't had the iPod near water or anything it shouldn't be near, and it doesn't feel any hotter than normal. There were no flashing lights or problems whatsoever leading up to the moment it stopped playing (except the odd song that seemed to load funny and would distort and skip when played). When I plugged it in... well... I may as well have attempted to plug a vase into my computer for all the response it's getting. It's not even a year old - so what's the deal??? Is it really and truly dead, and why would it have died so completely suddenly like this?

If it's not one year old, you should be able to send it to Apple, as the warranty is 1 year ( without protection plan ). Also you should try [This Utility|http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/ipod_itunes/ipodresetutilit y104forwindows.html]

  • Mini DVI to S-video and composite giving complete distorted output!!

I tried to hook up my 20" Sony Trinitron either through S-video or composite to the powerbook without any success. I got completely distorted picutre. I have tried all the video resolution setting that is available on the Displays reference window with the same result. Does anybody out there run into this problem at all.

I have a 12" PowerBook 1.5ghz and had the same problem with garbled video today. When I plugged in the Mini-DVI > Composite/S-Video adapter the PowerBook would consistently think it was attached to an ordinary VGA monitor, and could not sync with the television. This caused a B&W, warped, split in half picture.
I took the adapter back to the Apple store, plugged it into one of their demo units, and saw it behaved the same way. They gave me a replacement and everything has been fine since.

  • How can I shuffle a playlist in iTunes for an iPod so my stereo play a large playlist in a seemingly random order

I have an iPod classic that I plug into my car stereo.  My car stereo can play playlists, or if just plug it in, it will play every song in alphabetical order.  Once plugged in, I cannot use the iPod to "shuffle".  I require a pre-shuffled playlist.  I have done this before in iTunes 11 will special instructions, but I've since misplaced those instructions.  I know how to build a large playlist of all of my songs.  Now, how do I shuffle that list of, say, 20,000 songs, and save to a new shuffled playlist?  Don't say it can't be done, because I've done it.  I know Apple removed the ability to do this quickly and easily, because obviously Apple doesn't really take their customers wants and needs into account.  Otherwise, they would see the thousands of complaints after they removed that feature.
So, is there anyone here that can help me?   I don't really need to hear that it's not supported or that it used to work.  If you know how to shuffle a playlist and save it in that shuffled state, please post the steps for doing this in Windows iTunes 11.
    Thank you in advance,
    Bluemookie

Just go to Settings, Shuffle, then turn it to Songs. The songs will stay in the same order in the playlist, but they'll switch it up.
