My Shuffle no longer recognized in Windows

I am having trouble with my 1 GB shuffle. It had been working rather well for several months but now it is not recognized by XP Pro or iTunes. It does however get charged when I connect it to the USB port. Also, the USB subsytem on my computer does work since I can connect my camera to it with no problems. I have worked my way thru this document:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61711
and nothing has worked so far.
Restoring the iPod software doesn't work because the computer (and thus the iPod Updater) doesn't see that the device is plugged in.
I am now on the last step of the original document which is reinstalling the iPod software for Windows:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61669
I put that disc in my computer and it wants to uninstall the iPod software. I am concerned that this will delete my purchased muic, podcasts and my podcast subscriptions. Will this stuff all be imported safely when I uninstall it and then reinstall it?
Also, any help people can offer on why my shuffle isn't being recognized would also be great too.

I too have fell victim to your situations. I have not done any changes either. This stopped working a couple days ago. I have music on the shuffle and it plays fine. As soon as I plug it into either of my 4 PCs, Windows does not detect the shuffle. Every single one of them detects my jump drive as well as digital camera. I know that I don't have all four of my systems to auto update in Windows so I don't think that has anything to do with it. Also, I left my headphones in the shuffle as I plug it into any of the PCs and my music stops playing. Which is an indicator that the shuffle detects something connecting to it; my PCs fail to. It's all strange....

  • Replacement Shuffle Still Not Recognized In Windows Or iTunes

    Hello everyone,
I was having the orange/green light issue and my 512MB shuffle was not recognized in Windows or iTunes 7.0.1. I contacted Apple and they replaced my shuffle - after I attempted all documented fixes and running the Shuffle Reset Utility.
I plugged the replacement in and received the message "xxx iPod shuffle cannot be updated. The required disk cannot be found." I found an article on how to remove some temp and application files. I did that and also ran "checkdisk" on my laptop and that error went away. The problem is now the shuffle is not recognized in iTunes or Windows once again. The shuffle did come up for less than 10 seconds as the "F" drive and then disappeared and could not be relocated.
Here is the real rub for me - I plugged the shuffle into my wife's laptop running iTunes 7.0.1 and it works just fine!! Since my laptop is my primary - this is still a major issue for me.
Does anyone have a fix for this? This has to be a Windows disk or driver issue.
Does anyone have a fix for this type of issue? It is obviously a Windows disk or driver issue.

First of all, try another port on your computer. Some ports are not connected direct to the motherboard and do not recognize the iPod as well as those that are. Reset the iPod each time you connect it to another port.
Then try with the iPod in forced disk mode.

    Still no joy, see these.

  • Shuffle no longer recognized by, well, anything.

    Hello,
I've been reading over the posts on this subject and decided to add another one to the mix. I recently installed iTunes 7.1 against my better judgement, as I'd cancelled dozens of times before. Much to my dismay the shuffle that I own is no longer recognized by iTunes or Windows. I have tried the shuffle reset utility but as my shuffle is not recognized by my computer...it doesn't work. I would appreciate any help that someone might have, and if it's possible to roll my iTunes back to a previous version I'd like to know. Thanks,

  • Shuffle is not recognized by windows xp or itunes.

I have a ipod mini that is working wonderfully but when I tried to connect my son's shuffle - nothing happened. I have reinstalled ipod software & itunes, charged and reset the shuffle - everything I could think of. I am unable to restore it because it is not recognized by windows or the updater. The only thing that I can think of is to get a USB extension and see if that works. If anyone else has an idea to help me --- it would be greatly appreciated!!!!
    D.

Yea! I found the problem.....all I had to do was get the extension. The shuffle wasn't getting a good connection directly to the tower. The USB extension was the fix I needed and everything works the way it should.

  • USB devices all of a sudden no longer recognized in windows 7

    Hi,
I am using a HP Pavilion Simline s5550nl edition with windows 7 home premium (64-bit) since 1.5 years. Never had any problems until 3 days ago. Since 3 days suddenly some new devices, already plugged-in devices and previously used devices are no longer recognized (USB-device not recognized-error after plug-in).
I used an USB-mouse, USB-keyboard, Smartcard-reader, Sony Story 1.5TB External HDD, USB WebCam. They al worked fine.
3 Days ago I bought a WD Elements 2 TB External HDD. After plugging in, it was not recognized at first. Replugging it in it was recognized, but trying to open the drive in Explorer, it gave a not-formatted-error (while the disk should have been pre-formatted for Windows 7). However, i tried to format the disk, but it could not reach it any more. After rebooting the system the WD elements HDD gave the USB-device-not-recognized-error, using all other USB-ports didn't change that. In fact my Sony External HDD was no longer reachable either. Unplugging and replugging it in gave the same USB-device-not-recognized-error. Trying previously flawless working USB-devices all gave the same USB-device-not-recognized-errors (USB-flash disk 4GB, External HDD 2.5inch 160GB, USB-/card reader HUB, iPhone).
I then tried to connect my Sony and WD external HDD on my other computer with windows XP SP3. They were recognized within seconds and working fine (also the WD elements External HDD indeed turned out to be pre-formatted).
Strangely enough my USB-mouse, USB-keyboard and smartcard-reader kept being recognized at plug-in. Furthermore, my printers (connected over LAN) and NAS (connected over LAN) were usable without any problem. I did not encounter any other problems in functionality of windows. I then thought it might be a corrupted general USB-driver for mass-storage or something, so I started to google this problem. Things I have done so far (before each step I unplugged all USB-devices, rebooted and reconnected the devices):
    - Turning computer off, unplug power-cable for 2 minutes, reboot.
    - Updating BIOS to version 6.04 (was running version 6.02).
    - Uninstalling all USB-devices/mainhubs etc in devicemanagement, automatic reinstallation at restart.
    - Try installing newer USB-drivers for mainhubs, messages the installed drivers are already the latest.
    - Uninstalling all 'hidden' USB-devices.
    - Trying to go back to configuration of 1 day ago (maximum i could go back), resulted in an error that  the file might be corrupted.
    - Turning computer off, unplug power-cable overnight, reboot.
    - Running HP-systemdiagnostics: all passed.
    - Running Norman anti-virus scan (latest update): no infection.
    - Again uninstalling all USB-devices/mainhubs etc, automatic reinstallation at restart.
I also noticed that during the night before this malfunction appeared (so actually several hours), on january 20th, an automated microsoft critical update was installed (some anti-spyware definition update). I am now thinking it might still be a driver-problem of some sort of general USB-mass storage driver or due to this microsoft update or maybe some clever virus.
I no ordered a Recovery disk (never had to use one, so did not jet own one), to recover windows and if that doesn't help reinstall it. However I hope that anyone can bring up a solution that I am overlooking?
    D. Berks

OK, meanwhile I found that only uninstalling the USB2-driver enables the USB-ports again. Uninstalling it makes al devices recognizable, whil reintsalling it immediately makes all USB-devices unrecognizable.
I tried updating the driver to the latest version, deleting it (after reboot an automated reinstall is triggered), but nothing helps. As if soething that stays in the system makes USB2 to corrupt USB-channeling or something.
I strongly believe that it has something to do with the windows-update, but I can nowhere as a question about it to microsoft (will cost 70 euro's!).
Does anybody knows what this could be? Or better: knows of a solution?
    Tanks,

    Hi Ted
I deleted the file and reconnected my device and it quickly grew to 600kb. I'm not sure exactly what you need and there didn't seem to be anything interesting at the end of the log, but I did find the following lines which, from what I can, is from the point when WMP tried to establish a connection with the device and failed.

  • Frist Gen Shuffle no longer recognized.

I had a original iPod shuffle that i used for years. I misplaced it and recently found it again.
It worked fine when I last used it. iTunes does not see the shuffle. It does not show up in the system profiler under any OS and I've tried 4 different Macs. And it also does not show up as a flash drive.  I thought that at the very least it should show up as a USB flash drive with a dead battery
So my question is: when the battery dies does this iPod shuffle cease working altogether?
I have no way to trouble shoot it if I can't get any computer to recofgnize it.  If what I am experiencing is a known issue because of a bad battery then I would be fine replacing it with a new battery HOWEVER if it has a dead logic board (which would be weird since it worked when I misplaced it and it hadn't been distiurbed until I found it again) then i don't want to waste the money and time trying to repair it.

A few years ago, I bought some broken 1st gen shuffles on eBay, because I wanted to see if I could swap parts and get a few working shuffles.  It worked, but I found that most of those broken 1st gen shuffles were broken because the built-in USB plug was faulty.  So that is the most common failure, and the symptom is exactly what you describe.  No connection.  No light on shuffle.  Not recognized by computer in any way.  That may be why Apple changed the design for the 2nd gen shuffle.
If you have tried four Macs, I think you have ruled out a problem with the USB port.  On one of the Macs, try disconnecting all USB devices (except standard keyboard/mouse if normally used).  Do this to reset the shuffle
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1655
and connect the shuffle to a direct USB port.  If the Mac is a MacBook, connect the power adapter (so that it's not running on battery power).
There is a special "reset utility" for the 1st and 2nd gen shuffle
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/iPod_Reset_Utility_1_0_3_for_Mac
but it's useless if the shuffle is not at least recognized by the Mac when connected.

  • 1st Gen Shuffle not charging, recognized by Windows or iTunes

    Hi,
Got an iPod Shuffle (1st Gen, 512mb) from a friend the other day. He'd owned it for less than a year and had bought an iPod video, which is why he gave the shuffle to me. It was working great. Windows recognized it. iTunes recognized it. Moved my music library over to it. Charged it.
Came home last night and plugged it in. Nothing. No charge light. Windows didn't see it. iTunes didn't see it. Tried the 5 R's. Tried a bunch of things found on the boards here. Unplugged it - it still had a charge from before and played music just fine. Thinking that the USB connector spontaneously died on the Shuffle. Any suggestions/ideas? Anyone else have this problem and find a solution short of replacing it?

Exact same thing happened my my wife's 1st gen 512MB Shuffle last week. Still plays music, but no longer charges or shows up as connected to the computer (PC or Mac). I figured the same as you... seems as though the USB connector is dead.
Her fix was to head to the Apple Store for a new gen 2 Shuffle that same day since she "can't live without it". Her original shuffle saw 22 months of very heavy use (car, gym, jogging) and bouncing around in her purse/backpack, so I guess it did have a good run.

  • 1st Generation iPod Touch No Longer Recognized by Windows 7 PC

I have a 1st generation iPod Touch (no camera) that can no longer connect to my Windows 7 pc. Plugging in the iPod via USB does not trigger any sort of dialog box in Windows and it doesn't trigger a message saying a device has been connected; the iPod does not show up in either iTunes, Computer, Device Manager or Devices and Printers, either as an Apple mobile device or an unrecognized device, and does not charge when connected to USB (though the wall-charger still works). As far as my computer is concerned this iPod does not exist. I had successfully synced this iPod as recently as one week ago and am ready to pitch the thing in the garbage if I can't find a solution.
I have the latest version of iTunes as well as the most up-to-date Windows updates. I have already followed all the steps listed here (iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows) multiple times with no success.
I also have tried following the instructions listed here (Re: For those Windows users who suddenly cannot see their device in iTunes. Here's a solution that has worked.) but this also hasn't worked since the iPod isn't recognized in the Device Manager and I am not given the option of updating the drivers, manually or otherwise.
I have uninstalled/re-installed iTunes and all related Apple services multiple times. The Apple Mobile Device Service is functioning normally. iTunes diagnostics indicate that there is no device connected no matter what I do. I have reinstalled my Windows USB drivers and changed the settings on the USB Root Hub in the Windows Device Manager to disable power saving options.
I have tried connecting the device to another PC which detects and syncs another apple device (iPhone 5) with no issues, and had the exact same result: the computer doesn't even recognize an iPod is connected.
I can't update the Apple Mobile Device Drivers because the device is not recognized by my machine in any way.
I even completely reset my iPod and that just left me with a unactivated iPod that still isn't detected.
I am really unbelievably fed-up with the useless "try checking your USB cable"-style advice that people seem to offer on this forum. If anybody has dealt with this issue and has any serious advice other than "re-install iTunes," it would be much appreciated.

You said "I am really unbelievably fed-up with the useless "try checking your USB cable"-style"
    - Did you try another cable?
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    Try on another computer

  • My ipod shuffle isn't recognized by windows.

When I connect my shuffle to my computer, it runs "autorun" indefinately. I can't run restore to fix it because the updater doesn't recognize the drive. In MyComputer, the drive shows up, but when I click it, MyComputer freezes and I have to use task manager to shut it down. The shuffle won't play any songs at all. I have reloaded iTunes, iPod, and tried everything on the web page. Any suggestions? Help.
    Windows XP
      Windows XP

Can't say why XP doesn't recognize your Shuffle, but have had experience with the flashing amber light. I purchased the wall charger and the flashing stopped and the Shuffle received a full charge.
Come to think of it I had trouble getting my Win2K machine to recognize the Shuffle. After purchasing the charger there has been no problem having the Shuffle recognized by the computer. This makes me suspect that the problem you're having isn't because of XP, rather it is because your Shuffle isn't sufficiently charged.

  • 4 gen Ipod shuffle is not recognized by windows

I charged my 4 gen i pod shuffle and configured an updated i tunes to transfer songs (mp3 files) directly from my desktop. Nevertheless i tunes had showed ipod as a driver in the windows explorer and has also showed a mp3 files list from my desktop, I transfered only two mp3 files to the device, because, suddenly, ipod icon stopped to appear in the windows explorer. After that first time (it has happened yesterday), the green light now starts to blink 4 times.. but after that it won't response. Now, it is not recognized by my computer and by i tunes as well. I can't transfer more mp3 files to my i pod. Please, help.

    Hello fern_br,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!
I was researching what might be causing the iPod not to appear in Windows or iTunes and found this article named iPod not recognized in 'My Computer' and in iTunes for Windows http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1369.
It pretty thorough and I feel has the best troubleshooting for this situation.
    All the very best,

  • HP8450 Printer No Longer Recognized by Windows

Recently my PC became badly infected. Malwarebytes Antimalware and Spybot Search and Destroy now declare my PC virus free, but I have one artifact of the infection. Control panel as well as my software no longer sees my HP8450 printer. This problem first appeared when I was infected, this did not occur during or after cleaning. HP's online troubleshooter does not solve the problem. Further, I am unable to reinstall the printer; I have the original install CD and when prompted, Windows install wizard doesn't recognize the files on the CD. Trying a version of the software downloaded from HP's website, the install sees the device but cannot complete the install. I can't uninstall the printer because Control Panel doesn't recognize it as being installed. The printer is connected via USB cable and all of my other USB devices (mouse, keyboard, external hard drive) all work as they should. The printer was fully operational before the virus infections (Virtumonde.prx and Win32.TDSS.rtk).
I'm running XP SP2 on a Pentium 4 2.40Ghz CPU with 2GB RAM. I have cable internet, so I run a McAfee firewall.

I had the same problem after my computer got infected (And I am running McAfee with the firewall!).  The problem isn't your print driver, the problem is in your Windows operating system.  Try to reload or repair Windows from your backup disk (hope you have one).  It took three tries before i finally got the trojan eliminated and could reload Windows.
