My silver 80 gb ipod classic is part
Hi everyone.
When I got this ipod in 2011 it was shown as part # 661 4514 on the apple store invoice and says MODEL A1238 on the back.
It is silver with a silver back and 80 GB and when I put the serial number in to look up the manual the 160 GB manual comes up so I think it is part number MB029LL/A although it doesn't say that anywhere! I"m guessing it is the ORIGINAL 6th gen ipod classic.
It is using software version 1.1.2 on the ipod.
The problem is that after upgrading to lion and moving to icloud on the imac I connect the USB cord to for this I pod (note: now mail, address book and calendar are all synching through the cloud and in system prefs on the imac) mobile me says "diabled because you moved to icloud)
I have a problem where - I can click sync contacts and calendar "all" in the itunes menu for INFO for the ipod but nothing syncs. The contacts are blank and the calendar is blank.
Can this be fixed or am I just hosed up because this is an older ipod.
Have you tried connecting to iTunes yet and restoring it? You may need to connect the iPod in Disk Mode to get it to stop resetting long enough to run a restore operation on it. See here for instructions on getting your iPod into Disk Mode.

New ipod classic, music sync error
On Sunday I got a new silver 160gb ipod classic. Today in unpackaged it followed the quick start instructions, so connected ipod to the computer to charge, registered it, and then chose to sync (autosync) my iTunes library, and everything was going fine about a quarter of the way through. I decided to leave the computer to let it finish and charge fully. However when I returned it said there had been an error syncing "JAMES'S iPOD". So I decided to sync again, and now when I try and sync it comes up with the message "Attempting to copy the disk ~ JAMES'S IPO ~ failed. An Unknown error occured (-81)", and then when I press ok on that the message "The iPod ~ JAMES'S IPOD ~ cannot be synced. An Unknown error has occured (-48)".
I'm a bit confused as to why this seems to happen with my brand new ipod, and want to get using it! Does anyone have any idea what may be the problem?

I've had my iPod now for about 2 years and I usually don't have too many problems with it. I've tried everything that apple has suggested, except for the restore option. NO WAY AM I RESTORING MY iPOD!!! I've got like over 2000 songs on that thing and they aren't backed up! It's too much work to back up all those songs. I've reinstalled iTunes, I've restarted my computer and my iPod, but no matter what happens I can't put new music on it. I can listen to the music on and off my computer, but I can't make any changes. This is driving me crazy. I haven't been able to put new songs on my iPod in a while and have been listening to the same old things. Now that I've finally able to download new ones this thing just craps out on me. I just want to put new songs on my iPod, but can't. What's the point of having an iPod you can't change it? Also for some reason i've got duplicate songs that I now can't erase. Apple is just letting me down more and more lately. -

HELP PLEASE!!! ipod classic 120gb is skiping parts of songs
i had an ipod nano 4th gen be for it and quickly maxed out its memory. so for my birthday this year i figured id up grade to an ipod classic 120gb (6th gen). i just got this thing 3 days ago. i reset it for PC's and loaded my music on. now its skipping parts of songs. it will play through half of a song, or less, and then jump to the next. and some times when i try to go back to the song it skipped it freezes and restarts its self on me. help please?
oh and before you go and say "just restore the thing" i cant. i live out in the middle of nowhere and the internet/itunes connection takes for ever. it took 11 hours for it to download the software update for PC's. and now it wants me to re-download it.I had the same problem with iTunes 10.3.1.55 on WinXP and the steps in the link referred to here https://discussions.apple.com/message/15394615#15394615 fixed it for me.

My wondrous 160GB iPod classic, part 2.
Halfway made it out of the first problem, and now I believe I have a new one. After resetting and putting my iPod into disk mode and connecting it without iTunes pulling up, I've been watching my screen flip between the "Do not disconnect" screen and then the screen with the apple insignia for a few hours now. When I first unplugged it as soon as the "do not disconnect" went away to show me the apple, it told me to restore my iPod via iTunes. However, all it does is go right back to telling me not to disconnect while iTunes doesn't pull the device up, or recognise it as a device if that's correctly putting it. Anymore tips or suggestions?

IPod Classic only syncs part of my songs, then grinds to a halt slowly
Hi all,
My iPod Classic (80 GB, almost 3 years old) and I are having beef. Every time I connect it to iTunes it starts syncing just fine, but then after X amount of songs it all of a sudden 'hangs' for a while and then pretends to continue at the gruelingly slow pace of about 1 song per 10 minutes. Eventually it stops all together and gives me the following error messages (excuse any bad translations, it's from Dutch):
* "Copying to the iPod failed. Disk can't be read from or written."
* "iTunes can't copy song X to the iPod because the file can't be read or written."
It's a different song every time. After that iTunes completely freezes, the cursor beachballs to infinity and beyond and I have no choice but to just brutally disconnect the iPod. If I'm lucky there's some music on there, but not always. I now only sybc 1 measly playlist so he can manage it... Oh and the covers & songs are a mismatch (can be amusing when Stephen Fry's face shows up next to a QOTSA song).
Also I've noticed that at the point of no return when the syncing slows, I hear some clicking and revving inside the iPod.. Tell me doctor, is the end nigh? But he's hardly three years old and my most beloved possession!
Tried so far:
* reverting to older iTunes
* updating software
* complete reset of the iPodI have a theory that it's tied to Snow Leapord and/or iTunes, probably something Apple did to disable Palm Pre phones from being able to sync with iTunes. I've never seen that confirmed though, so it might nto be. All I know is I've been having this problem for a long time. I just tried iTunes 9.2.1 on my Mac hoping Apple had finally fixed it, but alas they didn't.
The solution I found? Get a PC and find an old version of iTunes. You give up some of the newer so-called features, and you've got to deal with a Windows box for your library, but at least the iPod will sync.

I bought a new ipod classic. When attempting to synch it made me update itunes to the latest version (there may be a more current one now.) I did this and when I synched to ipod everything showed up except the playlists. How do I get the playlist to synch to ipod as well? Thanks!
Connect it to your computer and restore it as a new device. Then chose what music you want to sync with it and do so just like your Touch does.

IPod Classic 160 keeps syncing large part of library
Every time I connect my Ipod Classic iTunes (version 12.01.26, running on Windows 8.1) syncs thousands of tracks that already were on the iPod.
I've got the settings for Sync music set for 'Entire music library'.
It's not such a huge problem, however it is quite time consuming to wait for 25%-30% of all the 14k+ tracks to sync and I cannot figure out why it's doing it. Any suggestions on how to fix it? I already tried a 'Restore iPod' but that had no effect.I think I found the cause: I use Sony's Media Go for managing my smartphone, using the same music files/library. When open MG, it starts to automatically add/change tags/metadata (for instance adding genre tags that I had deleted manually in iTunes). So each time want to sync my iPod in iTunes it will determine to sync all those tracks that have been modified by Media Go. I will try to make MG leave the files alone, I'm quite sure that will do the trick. Thanks anyway!

My Ipod classic 160gb is dead,It only responds when I plug it in to cpu via usb cable then the screen blinks.When I try to reset it the Apple logo appears but the apple logo blinks on and off to as long as i hold the buttons down,when i realease the reset buttons it just blinks back and fourth to the blank gray screen,it worked fine yesterday night this morning its tanked.is this unit completely dead or can something be done at home?

4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked

If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"

I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.

Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.

Red circle with X through it after plugging ipod classic into computer?
My ipod classic is roughly 5 or 6 years old. It has worked great besides a few problems here and there. Today I plugged it into my computer and updated it on itunes. It had been a long time since I had done this. But generally the ipod works great! Shortly after unplugging the ipod (by ejecting it) a red cross with an "X" through it came on the screen after the music froze. PLEASE help!!! I am not suggesting that you should follow as well, but just read them as your reference. You are the person to make the call.
Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times

Artists not showing up on iPod Classic?
I have 3 iPod Classics. 2 of them are Silver and the other one is Black.
All 3 iPods are being synched with the same iTunes Library on the same computer.
My problem is, the Black iPod Classic seems to pick up everything from the sync (songs, artists, albums, genres, etc.) but the Silver ones are picking up everything but the Artists. Every time I go to the Artist Menu on the iPods, it tells me no Artists were found.
Anyone have any similar troubles? and any ideas how I might be able to fix this annoying issue?
I have already tried to Restore the iPods but it hasn't solved the issue.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!It could be that you have inadvertently imported these CDs into iTunes as part of a compilation. If so, the artists won't show in the artists menu on the iPod.
To check, highlight the tracks on one of the offending artists CDs in iTunes, right click and select "get info". This brings up a multiple song info window, and from there you can check if you have 'yes' in the box marked "part of a compilation".
If you have, select 'no' instead and click 'ok'. Do this with any CD that has this issue. This will alter the info in iTunes, and you should then connect your iPod and synchronize the changes.
The problem arises because the information contained on the Gracenote CD Data Base (where iTunes gets all it's album/artist/track info from), is sometimes incorrect. It can show CDs as compilations when in fact they are not.
You should also check that the songs have album name info in their ID tags.

Once you add a second album name for that artist even for a single song, ALL the rest of the songs should now show up under that artist, even those without album names.
Providing the spelling for the artists is exactly the same of course. -
IPod Classic 80-gig won't transfer purchases to iTunes Library, nor will it sync. Please help!
My iPod Classic 80gb will not transfer purchases to my iTunes library. When I click the "Transfer Purchase" button, it says it's working, but then I get a pop-up which reads 'Attempting to copy the disk "OS" failed. An unknown error occurred (-69)', and following that pop-up is another pop-up, which reads 'The iPod "William's iPod" cannot be synced. An unknown error occurred (-69).
I need to transfer the purchases, because I had to restore my laptop (Which is a PC, by the way) to the original factory settings, and I had to re-download iTunes. When I re-downloaded it, I logged in and everything, but all my music was missing. I clicked the "Purchase History" button in the account part, and I clicked the "Download" button in order to regain my lost music, and I waited about 45 minutes or so, only to come back to iTunes saying it had finished, when it had only re-downloaded 75 of my 279 songs.
After this, I went into the help section of iTunes. In that, I clicked "Manage your media files," and from there, I clicked on "Find iTunes files." So, I did what it told me to do, which was to run a full scan on my PC, and I looked everywhere I could think of, and everywhere iTunes suggested my missing music might be located, only to find that I wasted my time.
I am a musician, I CRAVE the music I listen to, and I'm constantly finding new stuff to listen to and research, and if I can't transfer my purchases or sync my device to my library, then that means I can't get new music to listen to on the go, and for me, that is an extreme issue. Obviously, restoring my device is not an option, because I have nothing to sync it to to get my music back.
Please, if anyone can help me with my situation, I'd be forever grateful.
*Extra Information*
Laptop- PC, Dell XPS15, has Windows 7, has an intel Core i5 processor, only about 2 and a half months old.
iPod- iPod Classic, 80-gigabytes, I've had it for, going on 5 and 1/4 years now, give or take a few months.An app called CopyTrans may help get tunes from your iPod to your computer.

IPod Classic will not turn on, refuses to go into disk mode.
Hello Apple Community.
Last night I went out to a party, and while I was asleep, some questionable so-and-so poured alcohol on me, and this alcohol got all over my pants, and subsequently, the iPod.
I am using a 160GB White iPod Classic, and I have never had this problem with it before.
When i attempt to turn it on, I am shown the Apple logo for a moment, then a big red X with a circle telling me to come here.
I tried the steps for fixing the (X), but I can't even put it into disk mode.
The iPod makes an uncomfortable groaning noise, with some occassional clicking when I turn it on, and my younger brother in his infinite wisdom thought smacking it would be a good idea, especially since I told him that would not help in the least.
It hasn't made the noise again, but it still won't work or go into disk mode.
My question is in 2 parts;
1.) Is there any way I myself can fix my iPod? (i.e. Hair-drying it, formatting it etc.)
2.) If not, will Apple replace the hard drive inside, or the iPod itself in it for free?*
*The iPod was given to me as a gift Xmas 2011, purchased in August of 2011.
The site says it is still under warranty, but I want to know if this moron's action have voided that.
I have all the original packaging (and accessories), minus the receipt.
One last note; My care for the files on the ipod is literally zero, I have them all on my PC and don't care if they get erased, as long as I can fix this darned device.

Do bring it in to Apple Store and let them have a look, no harm in trying.
