If it's Not the Silent Switch... Try a Reset of the Phone...
Turn the Phone Off...
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
The Apple logo will Appear and then Disappear...
Usually takes about 10 - 15 Seconds...
Turn the Phone On...

The solutions on here did not work for me. I tried.....
I have the same problem with a BRAND NEW iPhone 5c version 7.1- no sound when a text message arrives.
(1) I have "do not disturb" scheduled correctly. No partial moon on the main screen near the time and battery indicator.
(2) I have the ringer icon correct with no slash. Yes I turned the hardward mute switch to the UP position (ie the one above the + and - buttons on the left side. I tried messaging with the bell as shown and bell with a slash and neither work. The mute switch is not red (switch above the + volume hardware switch) I enabled some assistant using the Settings menu. And I press the dot (looks like a target symbol) and go to Devices and I can see what position the bell is in....either a bell with a slash or no slash.
(3) Yes ringtones are configured for text and other. I can hear them when I am under settings > sounds. But they do not link with the actual hardware.
(4) I rebooted the iPhone 5c by using the button at top, slide the red bar, then pressed it again, apple came up for a minute and it seemed to be back up.
(5) I upgraded the IPhone 5c from 7.0.4 to 7.1 using my pc and itunes. And the upgrade was successful but did not fix the text issue.
(6) I do not have it in airplane mode or silent mode.
(7) I reset all settings using Setttings > General > reset > reset all settings . this wipes settings but not data and media.
This is really frustrating. -
i have just made my apple id. i have made this for itunes. after making my account i have problem with the review payment information as i do not use any credit cards and there is no option like NONE in review payment information. what should i do now? to proceed further? plz help me!
How did you create the account ? If you followed the instructions on this page when creating it then you should have got the 'none' option : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534
e.g. on a computer's iTunes, if currently signed into an account then you logged out of it, and you then found a free app in the store and clicked on its free 'price' :
And then clicked on 'create Apple id' on the popup :
When I tried that process to create an account a few days ago I got the 'none' option on the payment details screen.
If you didn't use that process then you will need to create a new account using it (the instructions won't work with an existing account). -
I have 1 Apple ID, 2 5S iPhones (1 private/1 work) with separates numbers and both phones ring when I get a call on one of the numbers. How do I switch that of ?
I realize that my wife could make her own iTunes account; however, she's been using mine for about 2 years now and this hasn't been an issue. I guess with the Family Sharing she can have access to all of our music and apps now with her own account.
I'll have to see if unchecking our emails resolves this issue. -

Thank you for providing the details of the issue you are experiencing with your iPhone. I would be concerned too if I only saw a black screen.
I recommend following steps 2-6 below for an issue like this:
If a single application is not responding or stops responding when it opens, you can force it to close.
If the device is unresponsive or if certain controls aren't working as expected, restart your device.
If the device remains unresponsive or does not turn on (or power on),reset your device.
If there is no video or if the screen remains black, verify that the device has enough charge to turn on:
If you are using an iPad, ensure that it's connected to the USB Power Adapter supplied with the device.
Let charge for at least twenty minutes, then see if it starts normally.
If there is no image on the screen, press the Sleep/Wake button to attempt to wake the device.
If the screen displays a red battery icon, continue charging the device until the battery is fully charged.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:
Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane. Learn more about restoring iOS software.
If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try to force the device into recovery mode, and then restore it.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, contact Apple.

no, my do not disturb was not on. and on the do not disturb, you still get calls from those in your favorites. I turned off the vibrate with any call or alert and put the flashing led in the accessible section on.
but it should not do that. it didn't even vibrate. my girlfriend called me and texted me with phone on table while we were at dinner and nothing. it went right to vm she said. tower is full so something is wrong.

If you stick the Leopard Install Disk in the Computer and Launch the Installer you will get offered Options and one of these is for Archive and Install with sub Option or Preserve Settings.
This will install the Software and the Apps but not touch any Home Folder of any User.
The Disk is likely to be at an earlier version of 10.5 and you will need to run Software Update (System Preferences) to get back to exactly where you were.

I believe that this problem you are experiencing is a software problem.

Good, thank you in advance for help. My Iphone 5 agency was left red battery and asked me a software update from settings, the update could not begin, I think, because there was no connection. I turned off the device to get to recharge my house and arrest him and get me a stick in red appeared and requested connection and immediately connected it via the USB cable to the PC, Windows Vista, and no progress bar. However, the update Itunes asked me again and I put it to update. It lasted 84 minutes, but after the update, the iPhone does not recognize Itunes, and reload the pc or the USB cable or with direct current charger (connector Apple). No reboots, no catches, no sign of anything. Please help I do not know what I can do. Yesterday I went to an agency of the company and was told that if I put the phone to update and it was the battery I should take it to an authorized Apple Software I restored. I have searched and have not found tutorials how to update the software or relive the Iphone. I'm desperate and I can say that for the first time in my life, I doubt Apple continue or happen to competition. Please help me.
With iTunes open connect iPhone to the PC. In the Top Menu of iTunes at the end select Help, scroll down to near bottom, select "Run Diagnositics..." Perform all the simple tests and follow the help.

If the card has been redeemed onto your account then you shouldn't need to re-enter it - I've never had to re-enter any of mine, and once a card has been redeemed it effectively becomes zero, it's value should be added to your balance. What is happening when you try to buy the song ?

My experience is with the iPhone 4S and the "new" iPad, both of which I ordered early on the opening pre-order day. In both cases the wording from Apple during the media event was "pre-orders will start on ABC date for delivery on XYZ date" which was also the same day they were to go on sale in stores. In both cases, the UPS truck rolled up earlier than usual XYZ date as promised to hand me my new iPhone/iPad. In both cases there were instances of confusion due to some pre-order confirmations stating incorrectly "SCHEDULED SHIPPING DATE: XYZ". In both cases that caused much fear, panick, and trepidation that fed upon itself as it permeated a widely scattered forum linked community of "adults" that seem to collectively revert to a state of childish impatience and ultimately child-like glee as they obsessively refresh their dedicated tracking browser window; become convinced that there is no hope of escaping the dread delayed shippment, and then finally receive their new toy exactly when they were supposed to. Not that I personally would ever succumb to that of course. Er uhm ... it's just what I've seen you know .. nothing I can really relate to.

Did you try to press and hold the home and sleep button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again? You will not lose data by resetting the device.

You shouldn't, but all of this should be on your computer anyway.
You should not update/upgrade/restore/etc without making sure that everything is backed up.
