My sister started using arch
last week i lent my sister my eee 900, running arch. after about an hour of using it she asked me if i would install arch linux on her 2gb surf. set up exactly as mine is, which is openbox , fbpanel, conky, wicd, emesene, xpdf, vlc, gimp, openofffice and pcmanfm.
she is pleased with it , and happily uses it as her main computer. for what typical teen agers do (msn,facebook, and some coursework(even thou she usualy does that on her desktop), etc), i didnt even try to pursuade her or anything like that, she used it for a while, and arch sold it self.
she is pretty hopeless with computers, she knows how to use them, but not how to set up or anything like that (usualy why she ends up geting a virus of sorts) , so now i have set it up as she likes, there is no reason for her to do any tweaks or anything like that.
i have an xp install disk handy if she changes her mind about it .

You might be better off simply flagging the potential system/soul destroying packages from updating (eg xorg, hal, kernel, drivers etc), while letting the rest update. At the very least, you'll be notified of when there IS an update available, or be let known when another package requires a certain version. As Mr. Elindig said, Pandora's box almost always opens when you leave an update for too long. But of course, up to you mate

Should I Build a Web Server using Arch?

I'm an Arch-noob. I'm more familiar with Fedora. I'm trying to understand and test the LAMP stack without affecting my current installation of Fedora. So; I installed VirtualBox and looked for a "lightweight" distro to run. I chose Arch. I'm not so certain that I made the right choice though. The installation is VERY barebones, which is good, but I'm spending more time trying to figure out pacman and why sshd can't be found unless I use "which" (as root) is frustrating. It's been three days since I installed Arch and I haven't gotten to my main purpose yet.
So; I thought I'd ask you folks what my course of action should be. Should I continue to use Arch or find another distro to help me learn LAMP? /etc/rc.d/ holds the start-up scripts. These are different to the actual executable binaries (eg , /usr/sbin/sshd). The scripts in /etc/rc.d/ are the equivalent of /etc/init.d/ on Fedora. Fedora does not include /etc/init.d/ in your default PATH either, so this should not be that different for you, except you don't have the same "service" and "chkconfig" commands*. The difference is in the init system Arch uses compares to Fedora (BSD vs sysv respectively)
* There is a new script called "rc.d" which will provide similar functionality to service and chkconfig

[SOLVED] System freezes when starts using swap
When my system starts using swap, it completely freezes. Switching to tty doesn't work either.
There is already a topic on this problem, but the only advice it has is "use zswap" or "do not open 20 tabs at the same time", which is not really a solution imho.
I'm using a swap file in my home dir with swapon.

I'm really, really confused and I'd appreciate some advice. I came here after searching for information on merging two apple IDs so let me start my saying that I understand that I cannot do this. I get that. The FAQ says I just need to start using my preferred Apple ID from now on. How exactly do I do this? Is it as simple as logging in with the preferred ID next time I purchase something? If I do that, what would happen to all my purchases under the old Apple ID the next time I sync my devices?
Here is the background to my situation:
I created an Apple ID when I first got an iPod many years ago. It was my e-mail address at the time. All my iTunes purchases have been made with that ID.
I bought my first Mac a couple of years ago. At the same time I purchased a MobileMe subscription. My MobileMe subscription was later converted to an iCloud account.
I'm no longer with the ISP that provided me with the e-mail address used for my first Apple ID. My only e-mail account is now my me.com address.
I tried to change my Apple ID to my new e-mail address but it said it couldn't be done because my me.com e-mail is already in use.
All my iTunes receipts go to my old e-mail address that I no longer have access to. I'd like my receipts to go to my me.com address.
I have a MacBook Pro, iPhone 4S, iPod Touch (all synced through iCloud), I also have an iPod Shuffle.
In order to get my iTunes and App Store receipts to go to my me.com address, I think the FAQs are telling me that I need to start using my me.com address as my preferred Apple ID. It seems to gives me an option of changing my e-mail address for communications but as soon as it realises that it is a me.com address it says I can't do it.
I'm concerned that if I just make make my next purchase with my me.com ID the next time I sync my devices I'll just have one song on there rather than my entire library. Can somebody please guide me through this?You need to retain the ID you are currently using for iTunes in order to retain access to your purchases. You should go to http://appleid.apple.com and log in using the iTunes ID, and add a contact address there - you could get a GMail account (free). You may be able to forward mail on from GMail to your @me.com address, I'm not sure about that.
You can continue to use the ex-MobileMe ID for iCloud - there is no problem about using two IDs in this way. -
My 3GS will not accept my correct password and user name to start using the Cloud. It just spins while "verifying." How can I make it stop so I can activate iCloud ?

I cannot get my password reset on apple itunes to start using my iphone. Tried website to reset password and asked to send email/same as user. Never getting email. Tried with my birthdate but that is not accepting. Called apple 8002752273 and guy told me Apple has had problems with this for weeks. Nothing he could do for me - i could answer all his security questions but birthdate. He said send a letter to itunes help , he could not provide. Could be weeks before anyone gets back to me? I checked itunes an of course there was not itunes email help available. Anyone have email for customer relations or phone# or know how to fix this?

The music that was on this nano when I stopped using it a few years ago is still on it, and I want to replace it with other songs that I've added to my iTunes since then.
iPods (except for iPod touch) are not linked to any iTunes "account." They are associated with your iTunes library. The account in iTunes is your Apple ID, and that is used to buy and download content from the iTunes Store. It is not required to use an iPod.
The 1st (and 2nd) gen shuffle can only be used with one iTunes library at a time. When you connect it, iTunes should prompt you to start using it with your iTunes library, and warn that the shuffle's existing content will be erased. Have iTunes erase the shuffle, and it will be associated with your iTunes library going forward. You can then add content to your shuffle.
The need for the previous owner's Apple ID and password should only come up if you are trying to transfer existing content from the shuffle to your iTunes library, AND the previous owner had content purchased from the iTunes Store. Just cancel out of that step, if iTunes asks. -
I have downloaded the 30 day free trial using Adobe Download Assistant but I do not know how to open it and start using it.
This was so annoying!! It took me a good couple of hours but i figured it out, you need to do the following: Go to the folder where you saved the download (in my case i saved it in My Downloads) -> click on 'Adobe Photoshop Elements 12' -> click on 'PSE 12' -> click on 'Setup' (select the icon which is a box with a shield) -> follow instructions and....voila! You will need to restart when it suggests so save anything else first, then when it reboots you should see the icon on your desktop....hpe this helps!

I recently started using an iPad. I up loaded several apps. Evernote, cloudon, Goodreader, Drop Box and lots of others.
It crashes when I down load pictures and then try to use them. Converting a jpg to a pdf usually triggers a crash.
Is there a "hitch" in my "giddy up?"

Are you using the "Print to PDF" dialogue to convert your jpegs to pdf?
In addition to OT's test, you might also check, if using a different "Theme" for printing will avoid the crash:

You crashlog shows, that iPhoto crashes, when trying to draw the "Print" theme background. There could be a problem wit the installed themes. Can you convert any jpegs to pdf, not only the jpegs downloaded from your iPad?

The computer I originally started using iTunes on a few years ago is no longer usable, but for some reason some of the songs I have now are not showing up in my library on the new laptop I just bought. How do I consolidate the total songs on my iPhone to include them all in a new library on my iTunes in this new laptop? And why isn't this new laptop letting me update to ios 6 without deleting everything on my phone?
Your music will ONLY be where you put it.
It will not magically appear anywhere.
You buy one and only one download. it is your responsibility to move/copy/backup your music.
You need to copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.

I think the issue is that iTunes (for whatever reason) thinks I have two Apple ID's.
also, to further complicate the issue, when i try updating the apps from my iPod the iTunes store is still recognizing my old hotmail Apple ID. So when I go to enter my password it won't accept because it doesn't match with the old Apple ID, even though it is the same account (just new Apple ID name).
I have tried signing out within the App Store and re-signing in with my Apple ID but it still brings up my old Apple ID name when I try to update. -

My husband and I use the same apple ID. I started using a new iPhone and deleted his contacts from my phone which has also deleted them from his phone. He hasn't backed up his phone but my iPad is backed to iCloud. Can I retrieve the contacts from this?
In preferences turn on iTunes sharing in iTunes preferences and keep iTunes turned on in both accounts. Or better yet put the iTunes library on the main HD rather than in an account and set the location of the library to that location in iTunes preferences.

How do I sync a new iPad that I've already started using, and don't want to lose the data?
I have a new-ish iPad that I have started using without syncing to iTunes.
I now need to sync iBooks, if that is possible, with my iPhone. I gather that the best way to do this is to link the iPad and iPhone up with iTunes.
When I plug the iPad into my iMac, it appears as though it will delete all the existing content on my iPad as it thinks it is a brand new, unused iPad. I don't want this.
How do I connect the iPad to iTunes for the first time, without it erasing what I already have on it?Sadly, none of this works.
I have backed up using PhoneView and iCloud. When I plug the iPad in, I can't access anything other than a binary option that says 'set up as a new iPad' or restore from a previous back-up. Sadly, none of the iCloud back-ups that I have done from my iPad appear in the list.
Looking at the list provided above, I can only do steps 1-3.

- This doesn't work. A pop-up appears saying that I have already authorised 4 devices. It won't let me do anything else with this.
5. File>Transfer Purchases(To make sure all purchased content on your phone will be in your iTunes library).
- Greyed out - can't do this.
- None of the things below therefore work either.
6. Right click your phone in the left device pane & select "Reset warnings".
7. Right click again and select "Backup".
8. Right click again & select "Restore from Backup", select the backup you just made. When prompted to create another backup, decline.
9. This MUST be followed by a sync to restore your iTunes content, which you select from the various tabs, You'll get a popup regarding your contacts & calendars asking to merge or replace, select "Merge".
