My Skype account used to send spam SMS, I was char...

Over the past week, while I was on holiday and off the internet, my Skype account was subject to unauthorised access. The unauthorised user enabled auto-recharge, and used the account to send ~ 600 SMS messages. My Paypal account, and so my credit card, was charged three times.
I used Live Chat tech support, but the scripted nature of the chat felt terrible. I felt like I had to demonstrate that the pattern of use of the account was suspicious when it was obviously spam, with dozens of SMS sent in the same minute. The representative wouldn't, or wasn't allowed to, answer questions like "Is this a known problem with Skype?", and wouldn't/couldn't tell me when the SMS were sent... although the menu options he suggested for viewing the detail of my account history didn't exist in Skype on my Mac. I was also told I wouldn't qualify for a refund for the unauthorised payments because my account had been subject to unauthorised access more than once (although he wouldn't/couldn't give me dates).
He copied & pasted (or typed at 1800wpm) a set of generic security tips, which I follow already, and when asking security questions to reactivate my account, asked several times for details about my credit card - which I don't think I've ever attached directly to my Skype account.
I hated the experience, I don't feel I got answers to any of the questions I asked about Skype security, and I've lost a lot of confidence in Skype as a result.
So apart from anything else I want to know why account features like SMS sending or recharge can't be disabled when it looks like accounts are being used for spam? How about email confirmation of actions like enabling auto-refresh? If the amount spent on my account goes from £4 in 12 months to £34.50 in 6 days, why is that not flagged somehow?
Look after yourselves people, because it feels like maybe Skype won't be looking out for you!

I sent a complaint to Skype today, I guess there's little hope on a refund... changed my password and stopped to automatic recharge, we'll see what happens in the following days.

    Are the messages in your Sent Mail?
    If not, then they are using your email address as the reply to address for the Spam they are sending out. No way to stop them.
    If they are in your sent mail, change all of your email passwords.

    My yahoo e-mail was recently used to send Spam to everyone in my Iphone conact list that has an e-mail address associated with it. I do not use my yahoo account on a PC just on my Iphone. My phone contact list is not synced to a PC and I don't send emails from my personal email to co-workers and they recieved the Spam from my Yahoo account. Has the Iphone finally been hacked? How can I prevent it.I will change my Passwords but how did it send from my Iphone contact list. The e-mail that was sent is not in my sent or deleted folder. was sent on Friday at 11:15 at night while I was asleep and phone was charging.

    It was your Yahoo email account that was hacked, which is why the spam was sent from your account, or  more lilely spoofed to appear to be from your account (actually sent from the spammer's email).  This is common with Yahoo email which has been easily hacked.  If you ever sent any emails to the people who received the spam, their email address's are easily found by the hackers.
    As far as your Contact list on your iPhone, the only way it can be hacked into is if the phone was ever jailbroken.  OTOH, if you sync your contacts with social media like Fakebook and Twits,  your contacts are long in the wild.

    Hello, I was just trying to setup skype for the first time and somehow it endep up saying that my email was registered already, I used the forgot password option and it email me some info in hebrew (I Know thta another guy gave my adress to some of his Israel friends since I started receiving emails from them a while ago), by using the gmail translate feature I realized that they already have an account name (yaelco20) which I hate and don't want to keep... questions are: 1-how's that even possible fro someone to sabotage my capability to use my own email to setup an Skype account if they couldnt confirm the account creation since they were never able to logon to my email. 2-Given this case, is it possible to get that username resetted somehow, since honestly its not an user fault case, but it is indeed a flaw in your security confirmation procedures.

    1.  I think that is a possible weakness of the Skype verification system, anyone can create an account and register any email address without the need to verifying that email address.
    2.  Skype allow to have more than one account to be associated with one email address.  In your case, you can send an email to [email protected], to report that account and to request to unlink your email address from it.

    Use port range Triggering instead of Port forwarding. When you use port triggering then those ports will be opened for the entire local network.

    i am having problem in not able to send mail for a pop3 account ...
    I have written an email gateway which listens to my pop3 account...on email arrival it listens nd extract the contents and send it as an sms msg...upon failure it needs to deliver the mail to sender id.I am using quartz to listen.

  • In Mail set preferences for which account used to send email

    When I click on a webpage link to send an email to somebody, Mail brings up a new email with that address on it -- but invariably it assigns it to an email address that I rarely use.  Same for forwarding incoming email.  I see no way to edit that From list to have a different account come first.  This does not happen when I click new message from the Mail program itself.  Is there a way to edit that list?

    By default, Mail will always sent new messages from the account that is currently "selected" (ie, you have selected one of that account's mailboxes).  However, you can easily change this in Mail's preferences.  Choose Mail -> Preferences, then select the Composing tab, then change the pop-up menu next to "Send new messages from" to the desired account.

  • Skype Account Hacked - Will this affect my Microso...

    Last Wednesday, I received an e-mail receiving confirmation of my password change, and confirmation of my new e-mail address.  Of course, I had changed neither and contacted Skype to let them know that someone had hacked my Skype account.
    Several exchanges with them later and things are still being sorted out (after six days). I have reached the stage where I have the link to reset my password, but unfortunately that takes me through to the Microsoft website and it is not the Microsoft password I need to change, but one associated with my Skype Login.  Anyway, I digress.
    I was wondering, if someone has got into my Skype account, using my Skype password, is there any chance he may be rooting around in my Microsoft Account (Outlook, OneDrive, etc).  Or would he have needed to also get around my Microsoft password to do that.  I suspect the latter, as that is where I am being sent.
    Would anyone like to put my mind at rest?

    I just declined a couple of contact requests from people I have never heard of, and stratight afterwards I received a notification that '(my email address) is online'. My Skype name is NOT the same as my email address and I have not set up a Skype account using my email address as my Skype account name. Could the unwanted contacts have somehow hacked into my account, even though I didn't accept their contact request?

  • Outgoing Email Account Used with Multiple SMTPs

    This seems to be a bug with the OS as I can replicate the issue on both my iPhone and iPad.
    iPhone 6 running: 8.1.3
    iPad Mini Retina running: 8.1.2
    I have 2 email accounts defined on my phone. 1 for work, and 1 for Gmail.  Gmail is currently selected as my default email account.
    If I am sending emails from the Mail app, everything works perfectly fine, I can select which email I want to send emails from and they work correctly.
    When sharing something in the Safari app, or other apps.. anything that uses the Share by Email feature, the email will be sent out by whatever the last account used to send an email in the the Mail app was, regardless of what is selected in the "From" field.
    So if I just sent an email from my work account in the Mail App, then I go and to share a page in safari by email, it will send it out via the work SMTP server even though it says my Gmail account would be used in the "From" field.
    Can anyone confirm this bug? Are there any solutions?
    I attempted deleting both my Gmail and Work accounts and readding them and I had the same issue.
    I was also able to replicate this issue when dealing with my Gmail and iCloud account.

    My Daughter set up a Skype account using my email address, (msn account) on my brand new laptop. The Skype app is on my laptop I am listed as a contact. I created a new account and name since I havent used Skype for a long time, and when I did it was on my mobil phone last year. As soon as I open my Skpe app my daughters information comes up automatically. I feel really frustrated and cant sign in because I only have one mircosoft account and I have forgotten my password. I use gmail now and eventually want to close my msn account that has over 9,000. emails that I feel overwhelmed to deal with. I dont want to open a new microsoft account. I also am unable to get ahold of my Daughter who is out of state. I want to be able to start video chatting with my sister in Florida.   • Removing my Credit Card from skype accounts I do n...

    It appears my sales people utilised my credit card for setting up multiple skype accounts. Unfortauntely now I am getting billed for 8-9 skype accounts each month. The other skype accounts are now surplus to requirements.
    Currently I only require 1 skype account. Is it possible to scan all accounts that are using my credit card and only authorise my credit card for my personal account and remove from other accounts. It's adding up to quite a bit of money each month. I don;t have usernames and passwords to other skype accounts using my credit card.

    You will need to contact Skype Customer Service for assistance with this.  If you report the purchases as unauthorized, all of the accounts - including yours - will most likely be suspended or "blocked" when the charge-backs are processed as an anti-fraud measure.  You might also consider closing that particular credit card account number and replace it.

    When I upload pictures it is reducing the dimension size of the image. I believe it is something on my computer because other people have taken pictures from my camera/albums and they display fine. It seems like my computer is automatically reducing
