My Snow Leopard Fix...Thought we lost everything!

Ok, here's the background post:http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2143287&tstart=285
OK, so we started off calling Apple. They said erase everything. Not an option for us....the machine had too much important data on it.
So, I purchased a 500 gig external drive, partitioned it, did a clean install of SL on it through the black macbook, and then booted from the external drive. From there we could access all my girlfriends files and transfer them to the external drive. We had our data back! From there we erased the macbook's hard drive, did a clean install of SL, and then proceeded to put all of her files back on.
Then, we ran into the iLife problem. Snow Leopard doesn't contain the iLife apps. So we recovered her bundled install discs that came with her mac, and chose "install bundled software." That took care of the iLife apps. Finally, everything was looking good.
We're installing Microsoft Office 2008 now and updating it. It's getting back to they way it was before this "simple upgrade to Snow Leopard." If there's one piece of advice I can give anyone, it's BACK UP EVERYTHING before installing SL, and an external drive is worth it's weight in gold, especially if you've got very important data.
The funniest part; Apple told us everything was lost and there was NO fix. I'm not a computer tech, and I only switched to mac two years ago, and we figured it out just fine. And so far SL is running fine on both mine and my girlfriends macbooks.
Don't give up!
R!

Back Up, Back Up, Back Up...When, When, When. Problem with Time Machine is remembering to connect external drive ( would help if Apple let you use network storage drive).
It does. You can back-up to a Time Capsule; a hard drive on another Mac running Leopard or Snow on the same local network; and, probably, a USB drive attached to an Airport Extreme (although that's technically unsupported, it works fine in most cases.
Many on line back up services available that automatically and constantly back up all selected data via internet, and encrypt for privacy all in the background. Instant access to restore 24/7 365. I use mozy.com with no charge at all.
Can you restore your entire system from them, in a single operation?

  • I activated secure virtual memory on snow leopard and now have lost everything

Hi, wow I could use some help. I was curious and activated "secure virtual memory" in the security settings on my iMac 2.16 Ghz Intel core 2 duo and restarted. Now I can't access any of my files and the "users" folder won't open saying I don't have sufficient privileges even though I am not prompted for the administrator's password.  Every account seems to have reverted back to basic settings. When I try to open the finder I get a message saying:
"The home folder for user "-------" isn't located in the usual place or can't be accessed. The home folder or Users folder may have been moved or deleted. If the home folder is located on the network, the server may be temporarily unavailable. If you continue to have problems, see your system administrator."
I have backups on an external hard drive with time machine. How can I restore my computer?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

It appears I have resolved the issue on my own. I was able to change the permissions of the "Users" folder by right clicking and choosing "get info". I then was able to access the folder and saw that all of my information was still there. Whew!! And now that I've shut down and rebooted my desktop appears to be back to normal. I did hit the ? for information about the "secure virtual memory" option in security settings BEFORE I selected it and restarted, but the information about it was totally lacking so unfortunately this leads one to explore...

  • Snow Leopard (10.6.2) aborts everything I try to run after login

    Afternoon,
I have a new mac mini with Snow Leopard (10.6.2), fully patched and configured. This box sees my local nets, nfs mounts, OpenLDAP, etc, and seems to work fine for local accounts (root). I can ssh(1) into this box using a domain account (samba NT4 PDC, v3.3.3) and this seems to work just fine. When I log onto the head of the mac mini using a domain account, that still works over ssh(1), I get logged in but very quickly (moments) nothing will start. Terminal crashes, safari will not launch, after terminal crashes it will not relaunch.
    I can't even log out.
I must ssh(1) using the same account, sudo to root, then 'shutdown -r now' to get the box to start again.
The ldap queries are working ok both when I ssh(1) in and do a 'ls -l /home' I see the right resolved user names coming from OpenLDAP. When I log into the console I see my home directory (/home/$USER) with the right files, etc. The NFS mounts (/home) come from a Fedora Core 5 linux box.
I'm not trying to use the mac mini as a server. I'm trying to get it to work as an orderly component of my internal network.
What is going on here and how do I fix the situation? I have this same problem with an iMac 27" running Snow Leopard (10.6.2), so I don't think this is hardware related.
    Mike

It turns out that there's something wrong about permissions.
    Here's the fix:
    (1) log in as the +root user+
    (2) type +chown -R Michael:staff ~Michael+
    (3) log out the +root user+
    (4) log in your account
    (5) done!
Hope this thread will help those who encounter the same problem as me!

  • Snow Leopard - Bento 2.0v5 - Lost record data on Snow Leopard Upgrade

Any thoughts on this one: After an update to Snow Leopard 10.6 and 10.6.1, the data entered in Bento fields associated with contact names in Address Book are no longer available (only 10 of 300 or more records are still available) In addition, the categories associated with names in Address Book have no records in the associated categories in Bento. Further, this problem exists for all of my backup copies of Bento. (i.e. it appears the only way to go recover this might be to go back to a full computer backup recovery from prior to 10.6. I hypothesis that the links between individual records in Bento and Address Book have somehow become corrupted or broken. Therefore the data may well exist in Bento but it is not retrievable. This could be because Bento might believes incorrectly that the original AddressBook record was deleted. Just to confuse things a bit, another possible source of the problem may be because AddressBook is synchronized with other computers and Google. However, post my upgrades to 10.6, all these other accounts were download from the main computer on which Bento resides. A minor Address Book - Mail bug is possibly related. That is that when I "add to Address Book" by ctl-clicking an email address in Mail, this email address apparently added but it is often not found in Address Book. At times it comes shows up later but often it just disappears entirely.

I have gotten a little closer to the problem. It appears that the update to SnowLeopard is not the problem. Rather syncing might be the culprit. I sync AddressBook with MobileMe and Google. The latter was as addition immediately after the Snow Leopard upgrade. I did clean out the GMail address book prior to syncing. Recently, I noticed some duplicate records in AddressBook. Some at least had two middle initials with periods. It appears there is a different format for this cell in the two systems. In one record they showed with no space and in the other with a space between the first period and the second letter.
I was able to recover my AddressBook data. All the records had an update date from my first syncing after adding GMail. The old records had a mix of dates. I just went back to the date with mixed dates. After recovering the records and turning off syncing, Bento is working just fine and all old data is displayed.

  • Snow Leopard Email Issues -totally lost, need help

I am a fairly new iMac user so please answer with a "dummies" version.
OK, I installed Snow Leopard and have had issues sending email. I have Verizon DSL - who in their ultimate wisdom just made some changes on Sept. 1 and are now blocking port 25. I have a .mac email account that seems to be working ok, but the smtp settings are for .me and I can't change anything because it's all greyed out. I also have several AOL accounts that used to arrive on my mac with no issues, and I could send email from them as well. I now have difficulty sending email and must enter a password every time (annoying to say the least). At first, I thought I had a Verizon problem, so I followed Verizon's instructions and changed the port setting to 527 (or close to it, I don't exactly remember but it was the correct setting specified by Verizon) but after that I couldn't even get my email so I changed it back to port 993. I guess my biggest problem is trying to figure out who screwed up the email - is it Snow Leopard, Is it Verizon, is it AOL???? All I know is I'm at my wits end of what to do and how to do it. I thought about deleting all the accounts and starting over but I don't want to lose all my past messages. If anyone has any suggestions I'll be happy to try something different... please remember baby steps needed here. Thanks ever so much!

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
First of all, any place you are observing to see Port 993 is probably the location of the port for the Incoming Server -- 993 would never work for the Outgoing. Are you seeing that at Mail Preferences/Accounts/Advanced?
To adjust the port setting for Outgoing Servers, then in Mail Preferences/Accounts/Account Information click on the arrows beside the name of the SMTP and choose Edit Server List. Once in that window, and if the name of the server is correctly entered, click on the Advanced Tab. Once under that tab, then for the MobileMe account (.mac/.me) choose Use Custom Port, enter 587, and furthermore enter the Username and Password. Do similarly for the Verizon account -- check or not check to use SSL per Verizon's advice. The AOL account will probably work with Use Default Port, and not SSL.
    Keep us posted.

  • I updated my hardware (memory and SSD) and restored to my previous Os Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Everything works fine except for iPhoto.

I get a message saying my Os X doesn't support iPhoto. When I click the icon, en error window pops up.
    Message was edited by: SeasonedMacUser
Problem solved: downloaded updates for iPhoto 9.2.3 from apple website.

Sounds like a issue when the video cache file is being written, perhaps anti-virus is scanning it, or it's being written to smaller or failing sectors.
1: Hard drives ideally below 50% filled, never more than 80%, use Activity Monitor> Drive Usage.
2: Always on anti-virus? Uninstall it, use the free, run as you need it ClamXav instead
4: MacKeeper? Uninstall it and never use it again.
5: Copy all User files to a external storage drive (not only TimeMachine), reduce user files down, disconnect all drives,  use Disk Utility > Erase Zero Free Space  to catch failing sectors in free space on the boot drive.
6: Restored  from TimeMachine or clone? Likely restored a corrupted system or malware.
Run through this list from #1 - #16  or go hard core and #9 and Zero erase entire drive in #20, start over.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
7: Your drive is possibly failing, you should think about replacing it

  • Snow Leopard fails to install - Tech Support and Genius Bar can't fix it

I am having an exceedingly difficult time installing Snow Leopard. I have tried everything I can think of and tech support AND the Genius Bar have failed me so far.
    The Details:
Every time I install SL it starts off well but sometime between 18 minutes remaining and 6 minutes remaining it fails. I get an error message that says there was an error that prevented installation. Looking in the installer log gives me a little more information. It usually has 15 or so errors, the last of which is always a very long line saying some package failed to install/unpack/be copied. The odd thing is that the file name is different every time.
    So far I have tried:
    Repairing the disk and installing
Installing from a different install DVD
Installing from external hard drive at the Genius Bar
Installing using RAM borrowed from the Genius Bar
Wiping the HD completely. I erased all my partitions and tried to install on a completely blank hard drive with a single HFS+ partition
I can only think of a few things that can cause the install to fail: DVD, optical drive, RAM, files on HDD, and HDD hardware. I think I've eliminated all those possibilities except HDD hardware. Changing that on a MacBook isn't trivial and I don't have one handy. Also I would think a HDD problem, or any hardware problem, would cause all sorts of errors and with the exception of this the machine has no serious problems and apps crash only occasionally. I've had no system crashes for as long as I can remember.
I have a Time Machine back up and have successfully restored my old Leopard System onto the MacBook (twice now) so at least I have the option to just give up on SL if I want to. As an aside, restoring from TM went well but not perfectly. Next time I install an OS I will be making a disk image backup. Does anyone else have any ideas? If you solve this problem I'll be eternally grateful and very impressed.
    Thanks in advance
    Jay

I'm sorry. I should have answered when you asked about RAM the first time. I have 2GB. I have tried installing with that, and I tried installing with RAM at the Genius Bar. I don't know how much the guy used at the Genius Bar.
Last night I restored from time machine so I currently have Leopard installed on the machine. After the restoration my email archive is little strange, I had to re-authorize iTunes and various other annoyances pop up but it runs without any problems.

  • Lost all ical appointments after upgrade to Snow Leopard

Yes, I like Snow Leopard, but it seems to have wiped iCal clean.
    Not so nice.

I just upgraded my MacBook Pro Intel laptop to Snow Leopard, and my iCal lost my "personal" and "family" calendars. There is no longer any content in those calendars in username/library/iCal - but there is in "work", "vacation", and another custom calendar. These events in these calendars have also disappeared from MobileMe, with the exception of about 4 or 5 random events over the past couple of years (out of probably thousands in those two calendars over several years, as these were loaded from an Outlook calendar in 2006). Interestingly, all my recent events in the missing calendars are still on my iPhone.
I tried the com.apple.iCal.plist on the desktop suggestion, but this did not recover any content. Any suggestions? Even some ideas about why just these two calendars (with the bulk of my content this year) have been affected, not the others? Very strange (not to mention very frustrating, as I'll have to recreate all of that content, it seems). Thanks.

  • Waveburner 1.6.1/Snow Leopard 10.6.3 looses ability to make gapless CD's

There's an actual fix (temporary hopefully) for this problem below...
Something in Waveburner 1.6.1 and Snow Leopard 10.6.3 has broken WB's ability to burn seamless, gapless CD's. On a CD that has continuous music (It's a live project) some song transitions will be smooth, but some will have a pop or glitch at the transition. Some have suggested that this is an ID marker problem, and there have been several suggestions here to fix this, like turning off CD Text, making sure your ID marker is exactly on a frame, making sure SCMS is off.
Apple even has a tech paper that says this is only a problem on playback on certain DVD players. This is not true at all.
NONE of the above suggestions for fixing this is necessary in Waveburner 1.5.2 (Logic 8) running under Mac OS 10.5 8 (Leopard). Waveburner just works in that version and OS.
I am so glad that when I decided to upgrade to Snow Leopard and Logic 9 that I bought a new drive and put it in my Mac Pro along side my old system drive. I'm an audio pro here in Nashville, and was pulling my hair out until I just went back a version. Whew!
Again, going back to the older Waveburner and Mac 10.5.8 (Leopard) TOTALLY fixed all the burning problems.

    matteo_mp wrote:
I have just solved the click occuring on gapeless cd using WB 1.5.2 on Snow Leopard 1.6.3 OSX, everything was fine.
So, you're say 1.5.2 is still working on OSX 1.6.3.

  • Applications crashing in Snow Leopard

I know this topic has been posted upon before, but none of them contain the answers I'm looking for.
At first, I was generally happy with Snow Leopard, the expose was great, everything was nice.
Recently, (its been maybe 3 weeks since I installed 10.6), some programs started crashing. Repeatedly.
Namely, iTunes and iWork. Now, it really amazes me that these Apple programs are the ones crashing. I have a few problems with other apps too, but that's another story.
Can anyone tell me why these programs are crashing?
I have everything updated to the most recent versions. I have deleted and reinstalled iWork, but it still freezes up within 10 seconds of starting any of the three programs. Same with iTunes.
I don't really use these programs rigorously! In Pages (most frequently used), all I do is basic word processing for school, no fancy font changing or formatting.
In iTunes, just play music. I haven't updated my library since updating to 10.6.
Do I need to fresh install Snow Leopard on my machine? Please help me!

I was having all kinds of werrd behavior after installing SL. I think I recently found the cause of most of my difficulties. Unfortunately be cause I performed both fixes at the same time i really don't know which one improved things.
Below is a section of the log I keep on the machine to track problems and solutions -
    8-28-09
Installed OS X 10.6 ($29). Working but the canon ptr is kaput.
    8-30-09
Installed UFR 2.0 driver for ptr and it's working but not completely stable (canon warned it wasn't 10.6 compatible). hopefully new driver coming in Oct.
    9-11-09
    Installed 10.6.1 update
    10-19-09
many crashes involving the combination of Firefox and textedit or grabber. Also external disk starting up for no reason and causing machine to pause - spinning beach ball.
    10-20-09
Tried to perporm the performance update but the app said my hardware wasn't elligible (Imac Intel dual core 2.4gig with 2gb memory)
Repaired disk permissions (hundreds of them set to 501 that should have been set to 0).
Reset the PRAM/NVRAM per Apple HT1379
    10-21-09
Crashing and beach balling seem much better but textedit did crash once when using firefox and textedit. Will monitor to see if things have improved.
    10-22-09
Programs seem more stable and I notice memory getting released more than it was after first installing 10.6.
Hopefully the notes above will help somebody.

  • App Store will not install anything on Snow Leopard

I just fixed (replaced HD) a Mac Book Pro 2010 with 8GB of ram. I install Snow Leopard in it and updated everything. Now I can't install anything using App Store. First, I wanted to upgraded to Yosemite, but clicking on the Download anything was not doing anything.
Then I tried to install anything else. Nothing works. Basically, App Store is useless here.
I opened Console and I see this error every time I click any install or download button:
    12/15/14 10:03:09 AM
    App Store[260]
    ERROR: ITSExceptionHandler: {message:"TypeError: 'undefined' is not a function", url:"unknown (might be html-embedded script?)", lineNumber:"unknown"}
I suspect the App Store is using some embedded JS code that is not compatible with the old version of Safari used in Snow Leopard.
Can anyone provide any help with this?

I completely agree that torrents are a perfect place to inject nefarious bits of code and I meant only to highlight the extremes that I needed to go to in order to workaround this bug. As for the illegal part, I already own the software and was unable to access it from the app store as a result of Apple's failure to put safeguards in place concerning compatibility issues (even if SL is a dead OS). Were apple to provide any of the following things I would not have needed to resort to torrent files:
    1. Provide hard copies of OSX (not just dead ones)
    2. Provide DL links when purchasing OSX (not just app store codes)
    3. Provide support (just to chat with a representative costs $30)
In the end I am confident that there are no "extra" bits of code but required a lot of extra work. I used the copy of mavericks only to download the installer for Yosemite from the now working App Store which I then produced a bootable USB drive from. Then I did a clean install of OSX Yosemite (erased and installed on HD). After that I booted to recovery mode and once again erased my HD and installed Yosemite from the now present recovery partition.

  • Finder crashes repeatedly under Snow Leopard

So, after updating to Snow Leopard from Leopard, I've got a problem with my Finder. Here's the deal...
Mac Mini, Intel Core Duo, 1.83ghz, 2gb
With Firefox 3.5 as the only active app, my Finder will crash while dragging files (jpg, pdf, flv) from 1 folder to another. It's not repeatable in any reliable way and doesn't always occur. I'd say 1 time out of 10 - 15 the Finder will crash and restart.
I've repaired permissions, cleaned all caches with Snow Leopard Cache cleaner, deleted Library/Preferences/com.apple.Finder.plist to no avail. Thought it may have been a third-party Quicklook generator left over from Leopard so I deleted the 2 generators which seemed relevant (folder.QLgenerator, flv.QLgenerator), restarted, still crashing.
Other potentially pertinent info... Have the latest version of Perian installed, problem occurs with or without Firefox being active.
I've pasted the crash long from a typical event. If anyone could help me decipher where to look I'd be eternally grateful (or at least really happy...). Thanks in advance for the help.

    Hello All:
After reading many of the posts here and elsewhere in the discussions, I thought I'd add my own experience because nothing I've read sounds quite this bizarre. I installed Snow Leopard 3 days ago an everything seemed to be working fine. That lasted about 48 hours. Yesterday, I was copying the first CD of an audiobook, and the program froze. I restarted the computer and at the desktop, there was a Finder crash report (send to Apple). Before I could punch the button, the Finder attempted to relaunch, and another report came up. And another. And another. I'm not sure if the reports went to Apple, but as you'll see, if they did, Apple knows me pretty well by now.
I got the Shutdown panel to come up while this was going on and shut the computer down. When I rebooted, the same thing happened. So I started up from the Snow Leopard Install disk and ran Permission repair and Disk repair. Both showed no problems needing repair. Rebooted. Same thing.
The process was really fast. In the time it took me to shut down, 8 or 10 relaunches and 8 or 10 crash reports. So I started up from Disk Warrior, Snow Leopard version, rebuilt the directory and and checked all the files. No anomalies. Rebooted, and the same thing happened.
Of course, in my zeal to make this horror go away, I had completely forgotten about Safe Boot. So I did that, and went to the Preferences folder to toss com.apple.finder.plist. What a surprise. There were 30 or 40 (or maybe even 50) of those files, all except the most recent one suffixed with a number (example: com.apple.finder.plistx37g8d0 - that's not one of the real numbers). (I'm sure a Unix person could probably quickly explain this, but I thought it was one of the strangest things I've ever seen. It does seem clear that Finder was making a new plist every time it tried to relaunch. But it wasn't deleting any of the old ones.)
So I scrolled through screen after screen, selected and deleted them all. Rebooted and the computer came back. More or less. Now I seem to be experiencing random crashes, especially QuickLook when I'm in the middle of Spotlight. Also, some other crashes with names I don't even recognize because (I'm guessing) I'm not supposed to know they exist. Today those crashes seem to be slightly fewer (but not completely absent). And there were absolutely no crashes for the first 48 hours I used the new operating system. All my third party software was updated before I installed Snow Leopard.
I guess I'm not really asking for advice (but it would be appreciated, none the less). I could reinstall Snow Leopard, but from what I've read in the forums, that often does not seem to help very much. Even though, on this computer, I won't be able to enjoy 64-bit goodness, there are reasons I really don't want to go back to Leopard. First, the new system has things I like - upgrade to Automator, which I use a lot, new Services and others. Second, and more importantly, at least 2 of the third party apps I use a lot have revised upward to 10.6 only. So I guess I'll wait and hope for the best. But I must say, in 20 years of using Macs I've never come across anything quite this strange.
Sorry to bore you all by being so long-winded, but I thought that if anyone else ran into this weird situation, they might enjoy knowing they aren't the only ones.
    John

  • Downgrade Lion to Leopard and upgrade Leopard Lion without Snow Leopard CD

    Hey guys,
Can I upgrade from Leopard to Lion without the Snow Leopard CD? I lost it.. And I want Lion or Snow Leopard back due to an image on my Time Capsule that Leopard doens't see.
I ran under Lion but wasn't happy with some of the features. I decided that I wanted to downgrade to either Leopard or Snow Leopard.
I made a back up on my Time Capsule. After it said Last back up 1 min ago I inserted my original CD (Leopard) since I couldn't find the Snow Leopard CD. I completed the reinstallation of MAC OS X and it ran super smoothly. Now Leopard didn't recognize my image (ofcourse since it was Lion) and all the work was done for nothing..
Now I really want to get back on Snow Leopard or Lion so I can reinstate my image and thus all programs and files that I now miss...
Problem: I don't have the Snow Leopard CD..... I can't download Snow Leopard and I can't download Lion because I don't have Snow Leopard... But I paid for both and I don't really want to buy both again just because I made a tiny mistake.
Any of you guys know how I can fix this??
I am now running version MAC OS X 10.5.8 and I'm getting a little annoyed! Lion was AWESOME compared to this version
    Cheers!!

    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.
I would assume the above may work to downgrade to Leopard by using the Leopard DVD instead of the Snow Leopard one.
If you purchased Snow Leopard then you should have the DVD. If not, then you might call AppleCare about a replacement or simply repurchase it.

  • Applescript Crashing in Snow Leopard

Just updated to Snow Leopard on my black MacBook - everything going surprisingly well considering the age of the machine. However, I'm having a problem with all of my Applescript apps and scripts crashing. Sometimes if I just select the "Reopen" option in the dialog box for the crash the app or script will run fine, sometimes I can run through that loop 10 times with a crash every time. I've tried recompiling all the apps - no luck. I'm an Applescript "dummy" so not sure what might be causing this or what to do to fix it.

Even the simplest scripts are crashing. For example, I have one installed in my login items in Accounts that sets the sound volume of the computer when I boot up (my wife works odd hours and I don't want to take a chance on unexpectedly chiming her awake, so there's also a shutdown script that sets the volume to 0 and shows a dialog box with buttons for "Restart," "Shutdown," and "Cancel." The first example is a simple one-liner: set volume 5. I don't have the computer with me right now, but the error message runs something along the line of the generic "Your application has quit unexpectedly" and offers buttons for "Ignore," "Reopen," and "Report."
Again, when one of these is invoked it almost always crashes on the first attempt since my OS upgrade. If I choose "Reopen" it may or may not run successfully, sometimes as often as 10 times (after which I usually say 'screw it - I've got better things to do!!').
