On/Off turning doesn't solve this Issue.
The only way for that is a forced restore (that means a restore and will delete all data from die iPod).
1. Turn the iPod Off
2. Put the USB cable in ur PC (direct not in a HUB)
3. Press the Home Button
4. Put the USB cable in the iPod (still pressing the Home button)
5. Now the iPod should appear in iTunes > make a restore

If you run into the "another installation" message even after the reboot of the PC (which is an excellent idea by HTP ProXy), reregistering your Windows Installer Service is worth a try.
First, launch a command prompt as an administrator. In your Start search, type cmd then right-click on the cmd that comes up and select "Run as administrator".
At the command prompt:
Type %windir%\system32\msiexec.exe /unregister and hit enter.
Type %windir%\syswow64\msiexec.exe /unregister and hit enter.
Type %windir%\system32\msiexec.exe /regserver and hit enter.
Type %windir%\syswow64\msiexec.exe /regserver and hit enter.
Restart the PC and try another reinstalll.

Hold down the sleep/off button for three seconds. Then keep holding it, and push the home button and old both for 10 seconds. The screen should go black about 6 seconds into that. After that, let go of the sleep button and keep holding the home button for 10 seconds. This will force the iPod into DFU mode, and you can restore it in iTunes. If at first you don't succeed, try again, because the timing can be tricky.

Has the unit EVER been jailbroke? Has it EVER been dropped? Did it EVER get excessively wet? Did you EVER load a pirated developer's version of the IOS?
If "No" to all the above, first try a system reset. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. It could take well over an hour! Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod. Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time. If you're unable to do the Restore and you have IOS-6 or lower, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here. Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

connect ipod touch, power off. hold power/menu button for 10 sec, then release power'while still holding menu. enter dfu mode/recovery
hold alt when selecting recovery/upgrade in itunes, this will allow you to select the ios software to restore from computer.

According to Sony my apple devices are compatible - and they used to work.... Since IOS 5 Upgrades they no longer play music through the docking systems speakers. My iphone 4s & Ipad are also having the same issue for my phone I did find this solution that seemed to work - only for my phone though:
go to: settings>general>accessibility turn on "assistive touch"
tap on the the new icon that appears on the screen (top left side -the black square w/a white circle inside)
go to "device"
I found my device was muted so I tapped it to unmute - I have had to do this a few times, but it does seem to resolve the immediate issue. Try it - but apple needs to come up with a solution SOON
