My sound has begun to fail partially?
My iMac began to have no sound in certain areas after installing Sophos Anti-virus software. VLC files don't have sound, the volume adjustor makes no sound, and Youtube videos (and probably all other flash things) have no sound. Certain things like the trash emptying, QuickTime videos, and others do make sound, but I couldn't try iTunes because now it won't open after installing the software; I get a message on startup saying, "The iTunes application could not be opened. An unknown error occurred (-200)." Both these failures led me to remove the software, which unfortunately did nothing. I tried resetting the PRAM and NVRAM but it did nothing as well. The third problem is that iPhoto no longer accepts the addition of photos. It says, "Insufficient Disk Space: iPhoto cannot import your photos because there is not enough free space on the volume containing your iPhoto library." I have plenty of space left on my hard drive (over 100GB) so that shouldn't be a problem. I tried resetting the library by holding command and option during iPhoto startup, but it didn't help.
Hi,
My iPhone 4 just started doing this about a month ago. I went to the Apple store in San Diego and they explained about clearing application memory (which I did not know). That solved it immediately but then the next day it started doing it again.
Did you get any feedback on possible causes ofnthe issue? I went back to my old BlackBerry last night but within 30 mns stopped trying because the iPhone is so much better.
Would appreciate any advice you have. Thanks! C.

I can no longer hear any sound from my speakers/headphones. This happened suddenly yesterday without any hardware changes or noticeable software updates.
-- The sound is not muted and the volume is set to full.
-- In the device manager, my SigmaTel HD Audio device has no warnings or errors.
-- I can't find any related messages in the Event Viewer.
-- The primary audio device is selected as the default for playback. The mixer shows my media player as being mixed properly to the device.
-- In the sound control panel, under Playback > Speakers/Headphones > Properties > Advanced:
- I get the error message "failed to play test tone" when I try to Test my Default Format (dvd quality)
- I get the error message "format not supported by the device" when I try to change my Default Format
-- Note that unlike others who have similar problems, I'm not joined to a domain
I've tried
* rebooting
* uninstalling and reinstalling the driver for the sound card
* "disable all enhancements" in the sound control panel
(http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/windowspro-audiodevelopment/thread/b09e43ba-3ffa-4a45-9593-8eee686f124a/)

Dell XPS M1530
Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 with current updates
SigmaTel driver version 6.10.0.5866
**Update**
I followed the following steps:
* using regedit, go to HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\WMI\AutoLogger\Audio and change the “Start” value from 0 to 1.
* Reboot the machine
* Try to play an audio file.
* Post a link to the generated log file which you can find in: %WINDIR%\system32\LogFiles\Audio
but don't know where to post the resulting AudioSrv.Evm.001 file. It's also not human readable and I can't find what utility parses it for reading.
**Another update**
Still can't read the EVM. logparser 2.2 can't parse it.
Found this thread which interested me but isn't applicable to x64 (I think):

Dell confirms it's an OS issue after troubleshooting with me for a couple of hours (wow)
Is there a way to look at this EVM file _without_ installing the Windows Driver Kit??Hi,
Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet Windows Vista Forum.
Upon your description, I see that you have done a lot of research and tests. Unfortunately, none of these troubleshooting works.
Based on my experience, this issue related to "failed to play test tone" can be related to several reasons. It also includes hardware defect. I am confusing why Dell confirms that the issue is related to Operating System. Could you let me know what operation Dell had troubleshot with you?
Meanwhile, here I just provide more troubleshooting except what you performed. If it doesn't work, I may also need to recommend that you contact Dell for support.
1. Microsoft has released a Hotfix to troubleshoot related to "Failed to play test tone".
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930883
2. Make sure that these services are started.
Windows Audio
Multimedia Class Scheduler
Remote Procedure Call
Windows Audio Endpoint Builder
3. I noticed that this issue occurred not long ago, I may need to suggest that you perform a System Restore to the previous restore point when the computer without any problem.
System Restore
==============
1) Please click on Start and choose All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then Windows Backup.
2) Click Restore on the left pane.
3) Choose Basic Restore.
4) Follow the wizard and click Next.
5) If you would like to restore everything in the backup, we can check the box “Restore everything in this backup” on the top of the window.
6) We can also browse and choose certain files and folders to restore. Then, click Next.
7) Then choose the folder to save the recovered files and click Next.
8) When we see a “Restore is complete!” message, click Finish.
Meanwhile, as I know, I'm afraid that there is no other way to look at EVM file except Windows Driver Kit. Maybe there are some third-party software that out of my mind can look at EVM files, you may need to perform more research on Internet.
Hope this helps. Thanks. -
I've had this HP laptop about a year. Three weeks ago the Microsoft backup began failing. Error message related to shadow files. The backup seemed to run fine until it hit firefox\profile\i75smlo9.default at 15% into the backup, dragged horribly to about 25% and then gave up.

Satellite C650 sound has stopped working
I've had my laptop for about 6months and have had no problems with the sound until now.
I have recently done a windows update and a few hours after my sound has stopped working completely.
I have updated the driver (Conexant Cx20671 smart audio hd) after that failed i un-installed and reinstalled the driver off the toshiba downloads, after restarting again no sound.
When i have media player on, the sound mixer recognizes there is something playing but there is no sound coming out the speakers
_*please can someone help!!!*_Ok, this means that the sound driver is OK.
Please go to the control panel -> sound -> Playback tab
Here you have to check if the speakers are set as default device.
Furthermore mark the speakers and click on settings button.
There you can also check the volume level. -
OS X Lion has begun to shut down VERY slowly
My Imac has begun to take a long time shuttng down.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Step 1
Select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the times of the log messages referring to boot times. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the time of the most recent boot when you had the problem. Post the messages logged during the time when you had the problem — the text, please, not a screenshot. For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time. If the problem is a crash or a shutdown hang, post the messages from before the boot time, when the system was about to crash or was failing to shut down.
If there are runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — edit that out, too, but don’t remove the context.
If the log doesn't go back far enough in time, scroll down in the Console file list to /private/var/log/system.log.0.bz2. Search that archived log, and if necessary the older ones below it, for the same information.
Step 2
Do the same with kernel.log.
Step 3
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.
Linc,
Thanks for your offer of assistance.
For some reason, I could not find the kernel.log on my startup drive (anything). I did find a kernel.log on my alternate local drive from an old system from Sept. 2012, but it appears to be irrelevant. Note that I am running ML (Mountain Lion) 10.8.2 on a Mac Pro 3,1.
A couple of other notes:
Doing a Permission Repair seems to alleviate theproblem, short term. It recurs.
Doing a P-RAM reset helps for awhile.
This same problem occurs on two other machines, MacMini Running OS 10.8 Server, a Macbook Pro (with the same client OS)
The Crash Log saves as a new name?
Crash Log (also called filecoordinationd??)

My audio/sound has been erratic for a while and now I have no output Help!
My audio/sound has been erratic for a while, both output and input, sometimes one would worked but not the other and sometimes both would be none excitant.
System preference does not show what I have connected aka external speakers or headset and the sound output in menu is grayed plus the output on system preferences output as well, sound input looks ok now.
Had Tiger, so I upgraded to Leopard to see if that would helped, Output use to come back after a while, however now input works but output hasn't worked for days, I can hear sound when I am rebooting or starting the computer, but its gone right after.
Since the Mac its fame for their audio stability, no ones seem to know how to solve the problem, so I am kinda desperate.
I have tried the following; ran repair permissions, looked for fluff lol!....still cannot fix the glitch. Any new ideas please!!
Thanks in advance!Since the problem existed before installing Leopard, it is clearly a hardware problem. Updating a broken system does not fix it, in fact many times it makes it worse or at least harder to diagnose.
I suggest you repost in the appropriate hardware forum - in your case the G4-17 forum(s) here:

OS X Mountain Lion: If you can’t hear sound from your speakers
Read the "If you’re trying to listen through external speakers" section. -
I have a macbook pro4.1 and the sound chip in it failed. My speakers and microphone no longer work. Does anyone know of an external speaker and microphone set that plugs into the USB port so I can continue to use both of these functions and not have to pay to have the entire main board replaced. Preferably something under $100.
I don't think you're likely to find a set of external speakers that come with a microphone and plug directly into a USB port. There are USB audio cards that look like tiny flash drives but have microphone and headphone ports in them, to which you can connect a typical two-plug Windows PC headset with a microphone, or else you can connect external speakers and a stand-alone microphone. Those adapters typically cost under $10. I don't know anything about the quality of sound that can be expected from them.
I have a Griffin iMic, which is much the same idea but larger, a bit more expensive (retail~$40), and perhaps delivers somewhat better sound quality (I hope so, but I don't know because I've never had occasion to try one of the little ones).

My Verizon wireless service at my house has begun to degrade over the last 6 Month. It has begun to be very frustrating seeing how we switched over from Satellite to Verizon 4GLTE wireless device. How do I contact someone to see what the issue may be. Zip Code 22580.
Out of curiosity how much data per month are you using? Another factor could be if neighbors have all done the same thing as you and the node is being overloaded on home internet use.

My sound has recently gone on my iphone4s, this only happens when I use my phone myself. The sound works when i receive a call or a message etc but I am unable to watch videos or play music, the sound also doesn't work on games. Please can anyone help with this issue or let me know how to fix it if experienced the same problem?
Remove all apps from multitasking bar. Double click Home button then tap and hold an icon and tap on little x on every app. Then reset. Hold down Home and Power button until Apple logo appears.

There are some pretty good deals out there on CS5.5 upgrades.
