My sound is broken!!!

My sound on my Macbook Pro all of a sudden doesn't work. My mute isn't on. When I press the volume keys there is a crossed out circle below the volume symbol. It's only 5 months old! Help please!!! I've restarted it multiple times, still doesn't work. Don't know how to fix it.

Before you throw your computer through the wall, go to System Preferences>Sound and make sure the output is designated correctly.  If it's supposed to be the external speakers of your Mac, then make sure that's highlighted.

    Hi,
    Try the following.
    First, download the Flash uninstall utility on the link below and save it to your Desktop.
    http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/current/uninstall_flash_player.exe
    When the download has completed, close all browser windows and run the uninstaller.  After this has completed, restart the notebook.
    Next, download and install Firefox and then using Firefox, download and install the latest version of Adobe Flash.
    Close all browser windows before running the Flash installer.
    Launch Firefox and see if you can now watch your CBS program Ok - if you can, close Firefox, open IE and click on the same Adobe Flash link above to get a prompt to install the ActiveX component.  When done, restart IE.

  • Audio sounds like broken record

    When I open the project, some audio clips will be fine for the beginning, but at some point will have one second repeated over and over again for the remainder of the clip. When played back, it sounds like a broken record. The actual files are fine, when I check the clips on my hard drive they're normal. But when I open the project, they are corrupted. And it happens to different clips each time I open the project. Even when I import the same file again, it will be corrupted in the same spot. Any ideas?

    Try updating your audio driver.

  • HP Pavilion Dv4 1428ca Sound is broken? What do i do?

    past few days i've been having problem with the volume. The volume control would always eventually lock-up after using the laptop for a while. This results in web browser lock-ups when watching videos, music, etc. and also limewire, winamp would lock up when i try to play a song.
    I tried to uninstall the IDT Audio, and did a system restore to re-install it but that didn\t help. I restart my computer as usually to not get the lock ups, BUT NOW the laptops speakers output static sounds when a sound comes up or while playing a song.
    I'm still under warranty, so do i call HP and send it back to them or do i send it to bestbuy where i bought it from???

    Hi Iam Adil Ahmad My Computer Can Not Work In Head Phone And Can Not Out The Sound In Headphone

  • Most, but not all of my sound is broken.

    It all started when I upgraded to KDEmod 4.3. First, my sound stopped working, but after reading the notes I realized I needed to install a Phonon backend. So I did. I installed kdemod-phonon-backend-xine and for a little while all was well. Then sound just stopped working again. I've tried Amarok, VLC, Kaffeine, Flash videos in Firefox and a couple other various programs with various files. For some strange reason Amarok DOES have sound, but nothing else does, even when playing the same files I can play in Amarok. So it doesn't seem to be a problem with the sound itself, but with certain programs, but I have no idea why. I literally did not change a single package between when it was working and when it broke. I'm not sure whether the upgrade to KDE 4.3 was related, but since it also gave me sound problems until fixing them I thought I'd throw it out there.
    I'm at a bit of a loss here. Any ideas?

    Sorry to revive an old topic, but I'm having the same issues again, and this time much worse. Before it was kind of sporadic and I could live with it. Now no sound outside of Amarok works, ever. I even took out my sound card and tried to use the onboard sound in case it was something crazy like that, but no results. I notice when I start KDE there's a message telling me the device doesn't work, though it doesn't explain why. When I try to play sound in anything but Amarok, I find this message in everything.log
    Nov 22 23:43:23 workstation pulseaudio[3139]: alsa-sink.c: Error opening PCM device front:0: Device or resource busy
    Despite all this Amarok STILL works, and if I go into the system settings for KDE and play the test sound, that works. Nothing else does.
    I'm at a loss as to why the device would be busy.

    if, for example, A is a class name, you should use "A" and then use getDefinitionByName() to retrieve the class reference from the string.
    private var  lettersL1:Array = new Array['A','F','G','H','I','N','O','S','T'];
    for(var i:int=0;i<lettersL1.length;i++){
    var C:Class=Class(getDefinitionByName(lettersL1[i]));  // import flash.utils.getDefinitionByName
    var c:*=new C(); // create instances from the classes in lettersL1
    // do whatever with c
    or, move those instanciation statements into your LetterArray constructor or somewhere beyond like:
    package
        import flash.display.*;
        import flash.events.*;
        import flash.text.*;
        import flash.utils.Timer;
        import flash.media.Sound;
        import flash.media.SoundChannel;
        import flash.net.URLRequest;
        public class LetterArray extends MovieClip
            private var _stage:Stage; //this reference works well to the main file. Should I somehow link it to the errorous code below?
            private var letterArray:Array;
            private var  lettersL1:Array; //this is the line that causes the error. I am sure it is because I need to add something to the main class.
            public function LetterArray(ss:Stage):void{
                var a:A = new A();
                var f:F = new F();
                 etc
                lettersL1 = [a,f,...]
                _stage = ss;

    I have also submitted feedback to Apple about this, as I think they have rendered Calendar all but useless by stripping out the ability to set sound cues, and to specify the lag time when hitting the "snooze" button. I completely agree, this is a serious and unprofessional messtep to remove a core function as though it were a trivial feature of the software. I've been a loyal Apple consumer for two decades, and this really makes me angry.
    I am hopeful the wonderful people at Apple will restore this function with the next update to the OS.

  • Please help... :( my sound is broken...

    hello ,
    my MBP speakers are not working! only the headphones work, they were working, but when i plugged in my headphones, and then out, the sound displays a full bar and a translucent screen with a circle and a bar, please help guys... i went to the sound settings, the speakers are not displayed...

    If there is a red light showing in the audio output port you may have a stuck switch. Insert the earphone plug a few times and see if you can trip it.  If that does not work, use a tooth pick of cocktail stirrer and see if you can trip with that.
    The problem may also be cured by resetting PRAM:

  • Sound completely broken, except for bootup sound

    My Macbook Pro won't play any sounds, except for the mac startup sound. When I try to play a sound, the screen flashes as if I had universal access turned on, but I don't. This happened after I tried to repair disk permissions and verify the disk to try to get bootcamp to work. I had also just started using the Parallels virtualization software. There's also no sound when using the headphone port, so this definitely looks to me like a software issue. Is there any way I can repair/verify the audio drivers?

    JP - Be sure you've checked the simple stuff. Since
    you didn't mention this...
    Run System Preferences, select Sound and then the
    Output tab. Is the volume at zero or the Mute box
    checked?
    Click Show All, then choose Universal Access and the
    Hearing tab. Is Flash Screen checked?
    Failing both of those, try dragging <your home
    <div class="jive-quote">/Library/Preferences/com.apple.soundpref.plist and
    com.apple.universalaccess.plist to the desktop. Log
    out and back in. Any joy?
    I tried this (and resetting the PRAM), but still no luck. Interestingly, the soundprefs file was re-created, but I don't see the universal access prefs file getting re-created, even after trying to set/unset universal access settings.
    One more thing I noticed: iTunes also won't start, giving an error code of (-200).
    Good luck,
    John

    It sounds like it could be having logic board problems. Enough Dual USB G3 iBooks suffered from the logic board problem that Apple began the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program in January of 2004.
    After leaving it sit overnight, does squeezing the case to the left of the trackpad allow you to start up? If so, you may want to consider trying the shim fix suggested by John Sawyer in the Apple Discussions iBook G3 (Dual USB) Displays Forum:
    [Y]ou can often fix this yourself by removing the iBook's bottom housing, and placing a shim of any sort, about 1mm to 1.5mm thick, onto the raised square on the bottom shield. I use a Scotch mounting square--you can get them in hardware stores and many grocery stores. When you reinstall the bottom case, it will press against this shim, which will press against the graphics chip, and may allow the chip to come into better contact with the logic board.
    John Sawyer
    CJS Macintosh Repair
    Instructions for removing the lower case:
    iFixit.com
    Try never to pick it up by the left front corner alone. The theory is that picking it up by the left front corner alone can contribute to logic board failure when the case flexes, causing the graphics chip to come loose from the logic board. If you're picking it up in your left hand (as I often do mine), pick it up in the center under the trackpad.
    Good luck.

  • Sound Unexpectedly Broken

    I'm very happy with my new Arch Linux installation, and everything was going fine until yesterday. Currently, I have no sound whatsoever when using Arch. I'm using ALSA on ArchLinux 64-bit with the ASUS Xonar D2X soundcard- however I don't think this is a hardware issue because everything still works fine in Windows and neither integrated or discreet sound seem to work in Arch.
    When I login, KDE gives me a message like "[my sound card driver (I think it's called virtuoso something)] does not work, falling back to default." I've tried screwing around with everything in System Settings -> Multimedia, but to no avail. Any idea what could be wrong?
    Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide.

    I think I found the problem.  It's with HAL and here's a post on it http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=84471 .
    Luckily the fix is easy.  Just add your user to the audio group (as root) -- `gpasswd -a username audio`  and restart.  At least that fixed it for me.

  • Sound suddenly broken

    Scroll down for a new issue!! (not mine)
    as for mine...
    usr err, please replace usr
    (a recompile of alsa and some fiddling with alsamixer fixed all... not sure what it is)

    I have a similar problem with my Intel HDA audio card:
    00:1b.0 Class 0403: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)
    Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Unknown device 30a5
    Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 22
    Memory at d2400000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
    Capabilities: <access>
    I have tried almost everything: with and without aliases in modprobe.conf, with and without:
    options snd-hda-intel <model>
    from this list of options.
    Tried also:
    options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1
    But all this was useless.
    At the end I have managed to make it work with an unbelievable solution: I blacklisted all the snd modules and removed alsa from the DEAMONS array in /etc/rc.conf.
    Then I made a little "script" called /etc/start_snd:
    modprobe snd-hda-intel
    modprobe snd-pcm
    modprobe snd-pcm-oss
    alsactl restore
    chmoded +x it and added it to rc.local. I set up the alsaconfig and did an alsactl store. After reboot everything is working fine. (but I didn't test the mic).
    I really don't understand why it does work... maybe some issue if the modprobe is at the beginning of the boot sequence with the udev....
    Hope this can help.
    PS : Sorry 4 my English

  • Built-in NVIDIA sound chip doesn't play with ALSA

    I have a motherboard that has a built-in sound card. It's made by NVIDIA, the lspci line for it is below.
    00:07.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] High Definition Audio (rev a1)
    When I run alsaconf, it finds the card and it thinks everything works. When it ends, I don't even get an error message. If I try to run alsamixer, it spits this out:
    alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory
    However, all the sound modules are loaded! lsmod | grep snd shows this:
    snd_hda_intel 370736 0
    snd_seq_oss 31872 0
    snd_seq_midi_event 8192 1 snd_seq_oss

    The *weirdest* part about this is on my first boot, it didn't work at all and I didn't even try to get it to work yet. I installed X it worked, I rebooted for something completely unrelated. I booted and sound magically worked! Not complaining, I was listening to music but then I rebooted for another non-sound-related issue, and now the sound is broken again. I can't figure this out at all! Anyone have any ideas?

    Well, I found out that I need the module "snd-hda-intel" -- I think. But it doesn't seem to be on my system despite documentation saying it's still available in 2.6.27. Do I really need to recompile my kernel just for this one module? I'd really prefer not to  have to deal with that. If I do "modprobe snd-" and press tab twice, it shows me this list of modules:

    UPDATE: According to this and alsaconf (I checked /etc/modprobe.d/sound) I *do* need the "snd-hda-intel" module. I'm running the standard arch kernel from pacman, do I really have to recompile my kernel...?
    UPDATE: Turns out I do have the module I need. I don't know why it didn't show up. In other news, I get a new dmesg error!
    hda-intel: no codecs initialized
    So, it seems like I need to load snd_hda_codec... but that was "merged" with snd_hda_intel back around 2.6.23. Any ideas?

     Do you still experience the problem? If so, read this thread. In your case, I am guessing upon your alsamixer "screenshot", modprobe options should be set to:
    options snd-hda-intel index=1,0,2
     If that does not work, provide 'lspci -vvnn | grep -A 1 ''040[1-3]'.
     Should you consider this issue solved, then please mark the thread as such.

  • Installing google-chrome from AUR broke sound in chromium

    Hi,
    I installed google-chrome to watch netflix yesterday and since then, chromium sound is broken. This isn't just with flashplugin, I can't even play mp3 files from my hdd using chromium. I have since uninstalled google-chrome but that's made no difference. Any hints of where I should start with troubleshooting? I couldn't find anything on the forums or Google.

    I'd try one then the other then together with first installation.  Flash was broken last year I was reading somewhere. Try searching the forum.
