My sound is gone from my Mac

The sound was working on my mac this afternoon and then tonight when I started working no sound will come out. When I push the sound (using function keys) on my keyboard the sound icon thing appears but below it it had a circle with a line through it (like do not enter, etc.) and the volume icon is grey not white when it appears. I also tried to play music through Itunes and the music will not play... it just sits there (the seconds do not run, the music does not advance). In my system preferences it says there is no input devices or output devices found. I just want to hear sound through the internal speakers in the iMac.
I will say that my keyboard batteries go low with in a day or two but the keyboard is working.
Any help?

Please do both a iMac SMC and PRAM reset s, it may take 2-3 times for it to work.

Entourage is a third party app so stop down to the Microsoft support forums. In any case I would suspect in its preferences there would be a selection as to when (parameters) incoming mail should be deleted from the server.

I had this problem on my iPod Touch 4g. Just press the home and sleep button. Wait and it will give an iTunes and cable logo. Now you can put in DFU mode (Hold Sleep and Home button 10 seconds and then release the power button kand keep pressing on the home button.) Now you will be able to restore it in iTunes.

Until you have tried Maps, Music, etc. first hand, I wouldn't formulate negative opinions about them. And updates, if performed correctly, do not erase data.
I presume that last time you updated through iTunes. This time, update over Wi-Fi by going to Settings > General > Software Update.

Don't know for sure but select File>Open Library
On the right you will see all the available Libraries (whose names end in ".fcpbundle")
Select the one you want and it should load into FCP X.

Can't get sound to play from my mac to Bose system

Can anyone tell me how to get sound to play from the Macbook earphone jack into a Bose system? I have the adapter plugged into the Bose as directed by Bose so it is set up but won't play.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:

The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it. Then go to the next step.
12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I may not agree with them.

Safari app is gone from my mac and it wont reinstall!my daughter put frostwire and I think i uninstalled it but safari is gone now i cant open any emails that have links to the!help!

I have Lost my safari app from my my, my daughter downloaded frostwire toolbar, and safari icon wouldnt respond , so i uninstalled frostwire and still could not get safari to respond, then i reset safari and lost everything, i tried to ininstall it from apple , it says successful, then i click on it and it asks me do i want to install, but thats it it never installs... I have all my busniness bookmarks and study bookmarks, arghhhh! also when i click on my email and try to open a link it clisks on a blank safari page then shuts down with an error sign?

Frostwire is a version of the now defunct Limewire, built as a not-for-profit project, and its developers claim it will never support DRM or any type of advertising. With the threatening cloud of lawsuits gobbling up P2P clients one at a time and forcing them to go legit, Frostwire’s future is in the balance.
In other words, like Limewire and other bit-torrent clients, it is software for illegal file sharing and/or downloads of pirated or even doctored software, and like other P2P probably a major source of malware.

Sound has gone from my games

For no reason that I can see, the sound has been disabled or something in all my games. I've tried checking settings, but there's nothin there to explain it. Any ideas?

Have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the Music/iPod and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound.
Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. Emails gone from 2 macs

I am in the process of switching from an iBook G3 to a MacMini. I use .Mac as my mail server.The iBook wasnt working for a while so I was slowly saving all my emails, but meanwhileI let my .Mac mailbox get overstuffed and it deleted all emails before June9th. It has also done this to the Inboxes in both the iBook and the MacMini. Are my old emails still in there somewhere, or only those I have saved into other mailboxes?

Worth a try to "Rebuild the mailbox".
Select the Inbox, then from the Mailbox menu, select Rebuild.

The sound has gone from my iPad3.

If have checked all sound and volume settings. I have rebooted 3 times. I have read other solutions to similar posts and nothing is working. No music sound or no video sound. The alarm is the only sound I can hear.

If the sound only works through the headphones, sounds like either the speakers or dock connector port are faulty.
If you don't get a volume level bar when pressing the volume buttons, the iPad thinks it is sat on a dock or connected to an audio source via cable and it is routing audio through the dock connector. Check for any sign of dirt, corrosion, bent pins or liquid damage (there's a small red dot appears in the port if any water gets in).
If you do get a volume bar (or if you do but there's no signs of dirt, damage, etc), the speakers simply aren't working. This would most likely be down to corrupted settings as the alarm alerts are still working, in which case try Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings and if that still doesn't work, sync everything to the computer and restore as a new device using iTunes on a computer and test to see if there is any sound.
If it still isn't working, it's hardware and needs service/replacement.

Safary is gone from my MAc

A few days ago I asked about loosing Safary from view. I was told to check in the Applications Folder. It's not there neither.

Cannot map sound through it from another system?

I have two systems, the mac mini and a thinkpad notebook. I initially setup the mac speaker output to go to the input on my thinkpad dock, worked like a charm, I could hear both the sounds on the mac (itunes for instance) while still being able to hear sounds on my thinkpad when I'm working through the same speakers.
I just tried this in reverse as the family would like the mac to have sound when I'm out of the house with my laptop. It doesn't work.
When I am looking at the input for sound on the mac and I play a sound on the thinkpad the mac KNOWS the sound is being played, the input level shows it, but it just will not actually play it through the speakers.
What am I missing here? Sound does play from the mac through the speakers though.

Well, this worked and didn't work. It did pass sound through, but it always had an annoying "buzz" in the speakers, like a mic hooked up to an amp etc. Also, the sound wasn't clean and crisp, was kind of choppy I guess...Tried it even at the lowest levels I could set everything to, the buzz was always there and the sound just wasn't quite right.

It's just too bad a mac can't do this natively and clean like my thinkpad does...on the thinkpad no buzz and sound is clear as a bell...Guess the family will just have to get use to plugging the speakers into the mac when I've taken my laptop with me and left for the day.

Try turning down the speak volume (System Preferences->Sound->Output->Output Volume) or the microphone gain (System Preferences->Sound->Input->Input Volume). Do this on both sides of the call.

We have a new iPod Classic and would like some help in choosing "Import Settings" (under Peferences) when loading the iPod from the Mac. We want to be sure that we can maintain a constant sound level. Used with Bose sound dock. OS 10.6.8 iTunes 10.6.1.
