My sound is working really (erratically) strangely.

I dual boot sometimes to play some games.
A while back, I recently wiped all my config files in Archlinux due to a silly mishap doing some yaourt cleanup. I ended up reconfigging them, and from that day onwards my sound has been acting real weird.
These are the symptoms:
1) When I reboot back from Windows, my sound hardware (most of the times) are not detected and KDE will ask me if I wanna forget them. I have to do an alsaconf and reboot to get it working again.
2) Even if there is sound, there are times when sound is only restricted to only 1 app. That is to say if I have mplayer running, amarok can't play any sound, nor chromium, etc. A reboot might help, or closing that sound program and restarting kmix might help, but this problem is really erratic and I can't find a sustainable fix for it.
3) Recently, my mplayer stutters like mad. I suspect it has to do with the sound as well. VLC plays fine. Mplayer used to work fine all along until recently (can't recall anything that triggered it)
To try to fix all these, this is what I've done:
1) added alsa to daemons in rc.conf
2) did an alsaconf, then alsactl store.
3) added options snd-pcsp index=2 in /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
4) reinstalled alsa-utils and alsa
Apart from these issues, my tv card can't work properly as well. If I add option cx88xx tuner=38 in my modprobe.conf, my logs get spammed and end up filling up my / partition (thread here: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=88673 )
Archlinus is a fabulous distro but I need my sound resolved  Can anyone help me out here?
Oh, I realised that syslog-ng is still spamming the logs and filling up the hdd even without that line.

You can play multiple sounds with pure ALSA. See http://alsa.opensrc.org/DmixPlugin. If the sound card doesn't support hardware mixing, software mixing is enabled by default.
Did you actually try without any alsa configuration at all? What happened? I usually let it autodetect everything for me. That won't work well if you don't want to use the default card or similar, of course.
I run Xfce myself, so I don't know about anything KDE specific...

  • Asus G1 & jack audio sound server working really bad

    Hi,
for those who know a little about jack low latency audio sound server, I have a big problem : it works like crap.
I get a ton of xrun errors running the jack server, even if I do nothing. The sound is sometimes saturated and it's quite impossible to play a sound file fluently.
I launch jack via qjackctl with some quite simple parameters. Been trying to change values but nothing changes.
I just don't understand : the sound card is doing well for a common use with alsa (playing mp3 & video files). I have disabled the kde sound system to save performance.
Note that I use jack successfully with an other computer (a desktop one) with a built in simple sound card and it works great out of the box.
Here with the G1, which is way much powerful, jack is just unusable.
    Any idea anyone ?
The sound card is a HDA Intel built in a core 2 duo chipset.

  • My iMac wouldn't turn on. This has happened out of nowhere, it was working really well before.  checked my power cord and outlets everything's fine.  The iMac has no power at all. no sound or anything, completely dead.  It is only 1 year and 2 mos old.

I have purposely been ignoring your responses to my posts about the heat issues in the newer design iMacs, but if you want really want to ague the point...
First, the iMac is marketed as a desktop model Mac. Not a laptop or MacBook.
I have never owned a MacBook, so I can't attest to how much heat the MacBooks generate.
I Have two iMac models. A 2009, 27 inch screen iMac for myself. And a 2010, 21.5 inch screen iMac for my Fiancée.
As a desktop Mac these are hottest running desktop Macs I have ever owned. Period. I owned two beige Macs, a pre-G3 tower, aG3 desktop, a G4 MDD Tower, the original iMac, eMac, iMac G4 and now my current iMacs.
None of my previous Macs have ever, EVER ran this hot. I have never, also, had any component failures in any of the previous Macs I have owned, either. All of my Macs have been upgraded or modded to some degree over the years.  About 2 years ago I had to press my old G3 back into service. Both my G3 and G4 models have been heavily modded. The G3 ran without issue for a close friend for over a year until that friend went out a got a Mac Mini.
That's a 1996-97 Mac my friend. And it still is in working order and hasn't had any failures.
The fact I am pointing out here is that heat is an enemy to electronic components.
Whether desktop iMac or MacBooks, tightly packed enclosures of heat generating computer components with fans that do not run fast enough at most times to cool off the interior or exterior, will and does slow roast computer components to premature failure.
I do not know how frequent component failure is in the MacBook line up. So I can't attest to those.
I do not participate in those forums.
This is why at some point in computer history, Super Conputers were liquid cooled. PowerMac G5 systems were liquid cooled because they ran too hot!
I have taken my own precautions to keep my iMacs' heat down as much as possible.
I don't  have the money to keep buying a new Mac every 3-5 years when some catastrophic failure happens.
I had to purchase my iMacs used as I couldn't afford the cost of a new iMac with the specs I needed.
My idea, your idea and Apple's idea of acceptable operating temps we can argue all day long.
I feel, personally, that the operating temps are too high and exacerbate operational issues.
I Have been participating in these particular iMac forums for just over a year and have seen plenty of posts of iMac component failures due to both heat and dust, dirt issues from within the iMac.
There can be no other reason for all of these failures. The SuperDrive is, usually, the first to go bad.
It's probably due more to its vertical mounting, but the excessive interior heat isn't helping it.
Next to fail is the GPU. The last to fail, but the most expensive to fix, the Logic Board.
I Have seen plenty of posts in my last year here of all of these failures in iMac less than 5 years old and ,perhaps, a little older. 2008 model iMacs seem to have their issues, too!
Apple is focusing too much on design and aesthetics, rather than longevity of their products, I feel now.
A Mac isn't going to last 7- 10 years anymore.
I don't have stats and numbers. Just common sense.
This is my story and I am sticking to it. For what it's worth.

  • How do I get my sound to work again?

My sound cut out on me. Everything was working really slowly and I had to restart a couple times and now everything is working at normal speed, yet my sound still doesn't work. Nothing will play out of the speakers or headphones, and when I press any of the sound keys a circle with a slash in it shows up and I haven't been able to figure out what exactly caused and it how to fix it.

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. Run Software Update and make sure you have a fully up-to-date installation of OS X.
    3. If you've installed an application called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and restart. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    4. If you've installed a software equalizer called "Boom" or anything similar, update or delete it and restart.
    5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
    6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select the Output tab. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them. Move the Volume sliders all the way to the right.
    7. If a red light is coming from the audio-out port, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Restart and test.
    9. If you have a MacBook Air, turn off Bluetooth and restart.
    10. Start up in safe mode. Don't log in; just restart as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    11. Reset the NVRAM.
    12. Reset the SMC.
    13. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.
    14. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • Sound not working with Firefox

I have firefox installed (Shiretoko) and installed the flash plugin and java plugin. Flash seems to work but without any sound. I am positive that it was working at first. I'm not sure exactly when it stopped working but I think it was when i installed the gstreamer plugins then switched to xine. I switched back to gstreamer but it is still not working. I really dont know where to go with this one. Sound works for everything else.

I just got this problem as well. Sound has worked fine for me for ages, never had a problem with it. I run alsa only and of course this means that you can only play from one source at once, the only two being mplayer and Firefox. Recently Firefox's audio stopped working. Flash, inbuilt player, and mplayer plugin. I have never needed to blacklist the OSS modules before. I would really like Firefox sound back, any tips would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT: Speaker test doesn't work either, and it appears all things ALSA are broken (aplay is broken as well). Mplayer now claims it's playing to OSS. How in the world did alsa get borked? Is there a way to reset it?
EDIT: Thanks to finding the source of the problem I was able to fix it. It looks like the volume levels were really corrupted or something; following the wiki advice for first run levels fixed it for me.

  • Sound not working under Lion. No output device. Need fix!

    Hi there,
after installing Lion 10.7 I never managed to get my sound working. Under System Preferences -> Sound I got no sound devices installed. Same happens when I open Audio-Midi-Setup. Everything is greyed out, can't even add something. Audio-Midi-Setup also will CRASH when trying to configure anything.
I tried already everything as suggested in forums:
    - Repaired Disk Permissions
    - Rebootet several times
    - Reset PRAM
    - Reinstalled OSX Lion again again and again
    - Updated to 10.7.2 (all the same crap)
    - Deleted some plists and stuff as suggested by users
    - Ran Apple Hardware Test from my second SL Applications Disk
I've spent hours and nothing seems to work with this crappy OS. Apple, we really need a fix for this!
    Lion = Windows Vista!

    Hi,
not sure if this helps, but you can try. I installed Lion today and found myself in a Czech localization of Mac OS. (I had Czech set as my preferred language, but Czech localization was not available before Lion, so this was new for me.) Since I found the localized folder names extremely confusing, I decided to switch to English. However, after a reboot the sound stopped working and I experienced exactly the same problems as you're describing. Out of desperation I tried switching the localization back to Czech and voila, the sound is working again. Let's hope this gets fixed soon.

  • I updated my ipad and the sound stopped working.

I updated my ipad to IOS 8.1.and the sound stopped working. My sidebar buttons say soundeffects or soundeffects mute when I press them. On my control panel there is no sound bar. As you can see in this screenshot it is not showing a sound bar to adjust volume. HELP?!

Update: Last night, I cleaned my headphone port & docking port. Reset Network Settings & General Reset all settings & reset ipad. Didn't work immediately & had some setbacks. I decided to wait to do the restore factory default for the next day, this morning. I decided to test the sound before proceeding. My sound is working correctly now & didn't need to resort to the restore factory default. All of the above worked but perhaps needed over night to really dry the rubbing alcohol used to clean the ports.?
sound is working. Thanks so much for your help Diavonex!

I have a dell computer with windows vista. I have a new iphone and wanted to sync it with computer. • HP Pavillion g7 Notebook PC Sound Not Working

I've gone through the troubleshooting steps listed on this page of the forums: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03257712&tmp_task=solveCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lc...
Still no sound. I really don't know what to do. The product number of my laptop is C3Q78UA#ABA
    Please help!

    HI AislinnSiofra,
    Welcome to the HP forum!
Thank you for your post, I will do my utmost to assist you.
I understand that you have no sound and you have tried the troubleshooting steps in the HP document. First we need to determine if it is the speakers, the port or the card.
If you connect head phones, do you have sound? If you connect external speakers, do you have sound?
You can try rollling back the driver to the Windows 8.
Press Windows key +c to open charms
    Select Settinggs
Type in Device manager and select from the dropdown list.
Click on sound, video and game controller to expand the list
Right click on audio and select roll back driver, If this works you will need to change your auto updates to ask before installing,( so it does not reinstall the other driver again on a restart), or turn it off.
I would suggest you run the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI to check the hardware. Please let me know the results.

  • I took my Pavilion dv6000 apart and now the sound isnt working

    So here is the situation...
My fan has been making noise so I wanted to clean out all the dust from inside my Pavilion dv6000. (But that isn't what i need help with right now.) So after I took it all apart and put it back together, I had this problem with turning the computer on. I think it had to do with this little ribbon cable that wasn't going in the spot where it had to be (it was connected to the power button chip.) I finally got that ribbon where it was suppose to be, and tried to turn it on. It still didnt start. The battery light would go on when it was plugged in, but nothing happened when I pushed the power button. I finally decided to give up and clean the finger prints off of it so I could bring it to my IT teacher tomorrow. While cleaning it, it all of a sudden turned on. I dont know what happened. It just turned on by itself. I mean, I could have pushed something while cleaning it, or maybe something was loose and tightened while i was cleaning it. But anyway, I finally got it to turn on. Now while doing homework, I notice the sound isnt working. I really dont want to take it apart if i dont have to becuase this is the last week of school and I need these practice tests that I put on my computer. I was wondering if there is anything I can do to possibly fix my audio without taking it apart. I was thinking if i check for the latest driver maybe that would help, but i have the latest driver and the sound still doesnt work. So does anyone know how I can fix this without taking it apart? If not does anyone know how I can fix it if i do take it apart? (for example, things to check to make sure they are connected or tightened?)
Thanks for your time and help, I really appreciate it.

  • My sound is working fine its just on garageband!! help me!!

I was on my Mac Book air the other day and the sound was working just fine. Then I turned it off for the rest of the day and that evening I turned it back on and went onto garage band and the sound had just stopped working. I checked if youtube videos and music was working ok and they were. Please help me I am not really sure what has happened.

It's possible that the orientation is locked in landscape (horizontal) mode. You wouldn't notice that on the home screen as it only displays in portrait (vertical mode) but would see it when you open messages. Open Control Center (on the home screen swipe up with one finger from below the bottom of the screen); orientation lock is at the far right of the top row -- looks like a lock with circular arrow around it. The same icon will display on the menu bard when orientation is locked.

  • Sound not working in my hp-2000-2d29DX notebook pc

My sound stopped working all of a sudden. When it happened I was using the sound recorder. When I tried to play one of the sounds back it said something was wrong. I then tried to watch a youtube video, but there was no sound.  After that, I tried to play music on spotify, but an error message from spotify said 'there is something wrong with my sound card.'
I found an article on steps to take to restore your sound. I tried a few things. I checked my device manger, and checked the audio driver, and it said it was 'up to date'. Also, when I did the audio troubleshoot it said it couldn't detect any problems. I tried to test the speakers as well, but an error message saying 'failed to play test tone'.  I'm not sure what to do now.
I got this laptop in December, and  updated to windows 8.1 operating system three weeks ago. That is the only big change I have made. My product number is: E0K79UA
I really need the sound back soon as soon as possible. My math class is based mostly online, and I have to watch a video of teacher for the lesson. What should I do to fix it? Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Hi,
    Try the following.
Download the Realtek HD Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
    http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp64001-64500/sp64443.exe
When done, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the Realtek device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
Next, download and reinstall the Chipset driver on the following link.
    Chipset Driver - Windows 8.1
When the reinstallation has completed, shutdown the notebook by holding down the Left Shift key as you click on Shutdown to temporarily prevent a hybrid boot, then unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter.
Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f5 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.
Let Windows fully load - it will automatically load an audio driver, but just let this complete.  Then open your Downloads folder, right click on the Realtek HD Audio installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select Playback Devices.  Left click 'Speakers and Headphones' once to highlight it and then click the Set Default button - check if you now have audio.

  • Sound not working on Youtube video embedded in webpage used in web clip.

I created a web clip and installed it using ipcu. On the web page I've created that I'm using for the web clip, there is an embedded Youtube video. The sound for the video is not working. Why is the sound not working? It works in safari if go to Youtube.
    IOS version 6.1
    Model: MD511LL/A

My computer also recently downloaded soundflower? I didn't approve of this change
I'm not sure what that means, but if Soundflower really is installed, uninstall it according to the developer's instructions. Back up all data before making any changes. Reboot and test.

  • Flash sound not working - everything else is

I'd like to start out by mentioning that I realize there has probably been posts about this in the past, I know I've googled one. But the information didn't help, so I thought I'd start a thread about in hope that someone may be able to help.
This is off a new instilation of Arch Linux 64 bit, and as the Subject says I can't get sound from any flash video, etc from a webpage. Everything else works, amarok, videos off the drive, games, etc. I've tried reinstalling flash through pacman, didn't work. I tried installing flashsupport through pacman, didn't work. I tried the beta drivers of flash, didn't work.
Now, what I tried last night did work, so it seemed. I blacklisted oss, rebooted. I had then working flash, and I could play music from amarok at the same time. That was all I was able to test at that time. Only thing that I found odd was when I did that, I had lost the little tune that plays when you enter and exit KDE. It also notified me that one of my Audio devices had stopped working. Now, this morning, I logged in. Same no little tune, same notification from KDE that a device isn't working, actually two times it notified me. I then tried amarok. No sound. I tried flash, no sound. I went into the system settings, fooled around with the devices. The device that works was at the top of the list where it should be. I tested the sound, it worked there. I closed out of it, was trying sound again, nothing.  I went back to the multimedia in system settings, now the sound won't work when I hit test. I look in the Kinfocenter under my sound, and my sound driver is ALSA like it should be, but under sections like MIDI device, and Mixers, it's coplaining about them not being enabled in config. Which I know before I blacklisted OSS, they where.
So, I did the only thing I could think of, and un-blacklist OSS, reboot. I come back in, and it's still complaining about a sound device not working, no intro sound. I go back to system setting -> multimedia, make sure my preferred device is at the top, test the sound. Ok working. I test amarok, working. Video, working. I log off, and back in. I got the intro sound, there was no notification that a sound device isn't working. Checked kinfocenter, everything seems to be there, my mixer is back and configured, etc. Everything is back to normal, except sound in flash. So I'm right back where I started, minus my confusion as to why when I un-blacklisted, and rebooted it was still giving me issues at first.
I've also read up about dmix, but it says that with ALSA 1.0.9rc2 and higher, it doesn't need to be enabled, since it already is automatically. Considering I have ALSA 1.0.21, I don't think that's the issue.
So, does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can try, or do to fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Just wanted to thankyou for the link. From using the fuser -v /dev/snd/* /dev/dsp* command, I was able to do a couple days of research, the command told me flash was trying to use /dev/dsp, so I had to reinstall the alsa-oss package, that seemed to fix it for a while. But the next day it was back, I blacklisted oss again, and then the key here that I think really may have fixed it is that apparently under my modconfig file I had to make it load my soundcard first, it wasn't even in there. ALSA was trying to use my onboard soundcard, and my pci sound card. Alsamixer was using my onboard, but most everything else was using my normal card. I'm thinking that when flash was playing, it somehow decided to use my onboard instead. That's my thoughts anyways.
