My split screen sequence doesn't export
Can anyone tell me why when I have created a split screen, when I export it, only one half exports and the other is black?

How to reposition split screen clip keeping complex keyframing?
New to PP and trying to learn best practices for split screen sequences.
Lets say the screen is split into 3 vertical panels each with its own video of a person, the panels created by cropping. Each person has been meticulously position/scale/cropping-keyframed to center their faces in the middle of the vertical panel, rather than bouncing around the frame like in the original clips.
How do I reposition this center panel to the left side with one fell swoop, keeping all the keyframes so the face is still centered in the panel?

I have a spelling app that is stuck on the screen - it doesn't have any way to close it out, and when I split the screen and go to "Finder" to remove it, it says that it can't, because the program is still open. Please help.

Custom Sequence Settings for Split Screen
Hello all,
FCP 6. I am doing a split screen where I am combining two 720x480 videos side by side. I did the whole project by scaling down both videos to match whatever the sequence settings were. How can I create a custom canvas/ sequence size to avoid scaling down the frames and cutting on the image quality?
I created a custom sequence setting doubling the width to 1440 and keeping height at 480.
Can I copy and paste the clips from the old sequence without the scaled down quality to the new sequence? How can I do that?
If I open a new sequence is the new setting going to be in effect?
Any other suggestions on how to deal with custom size frame/ split screen?

Thank you for help! Does make sense. I did all like you suggested. After removing 'basic motion' and pasting into new sequence, the clips appeared big default size instead of small. I re-applied motion attribute like you said, but isn't it scaling down again since I am sizing from big to small (50%) again?
It looks good on the screen but I am not sure about actual resolution of the clip. In clip-item properties-format I read frame size but I am not sure if this info is about the source file or the clip.
I would like to get around this issue without scaling down (keeping the scale in motion tab at 100%).
The way I tried to deal with the scaling and res before I got your answer, was after I changed the 'global' settings for the custom 1440x480 sequence, and after creating a new sequence, I went to sequence settings again (from top menu) and set to custom (1440x480) (with just global settings the pasted clips looked like before). After copying and pasting with removed attributes-distort, all was in the original right/left order normal size and resolution.
The way I tried seems to meet my need (as pasting attributes-motion to all again would be complicated as the design of the project does not stick to the clearly left/right pattern but fluctuates back and forth at times and there is too many short clips).
The only problem I have now is with the RENDER.
After I rendered what I did to your suggested solution and mine (two sequences), the whole project shows in low res. I checked the render settings in Sequence-Render Control, and both resolution and frame rate are set to 100% so I dont know what I do wrong.
Any suggestions??

Why can't I use split screen with this app. Defienitly a step backwards from the old app. Also with the new app, it continues to tell me to get a new skype, even after I've removed the old version and installed the new one. Please fix. I like the old version better.

Split screen causes artifacting in images - what is the solution?
After creating a four image split screen (two frames on top, two frames on the bottom), the images in each box suffer from extreme artifacting. By that I mean the images breaks down. For example, grass that in the original images is clearly and cleanly visible, suddenly becomes very "noisy" once I have added it to the split screen.
I have gone through several attempted solutions, but have all failed to solve the problem.
The degradation is most noticable when I export to a Mpeg2 and burn to a DVD, but I have eliminated the possibility that it is breaking down in the Mpeg2 conversion. Instead, it seems to be happening within Final Cut Pro.
Can anyone offer suggestions that might help?Patrick. Thanks very much for jumping in.
For clarification, the images in the split screens are not photos. They are films. Four films in four boxes playing on the screen at the same time. Therefore, correct me if I'm wrong, your Photoshop advice doesn't work here. Also, I do not have Motion.
I took a look at the suggestion in your final paragraph. I have Final Cut Pro HD 4.5, but nevertheless went through your suggested workflow. Ctrl-clicked on the sequence - selected settings - clicked on the Video Processing tab. I don't have a sampling setting as you indicate per se, but I did try changing the only apparently appropriate setting in FCP 4.5, which was to change from Render in 8-bit YUV to Render all YUV material in High Precision YUV. This took twice as long to render the sequence, but unfortunately had no positive effect.
So, I am still in the position of having 4 great looking videos sequences, that I am trying to combine into one 4-squared split screen, but when I do so each of the four sequences deteriorates substantially.
Do you have any other suggestions? I would be grateful for your experience.

How to do a locked split-screen between two different video tracks
I'm creating two time-lapse videos and then I'm planning to to play them side-by-side in one sequence.
The way I was planning to do this was to scoot one video track over using the "center" tool in the motion panel, and then crop it on its right-hand edge to reveal the other video track beneath.
The problem with doing this however is that, as the camera gets bumped or moved slightly as the months go on, and I then have to cut and reposition the "center" location for the clip, I have to then adjust the amount of crop on that video clip since I've moved its position. This means the center split-screen location keeps changing as I move the video around.
Is there a way where I can just lock the split screen smack in the middle of the frame as I tinker with each side of the frame (video track) independently? I tried adding a split-screen transition in the very beginning to the top track, but I can't make cuts on a transition to then adjust the motion attributes.
Any ideas on how to simplify this process would really be appreciated. Originally, I thought there was no easier way to do this, but I was so blown away by all the answers to my motion effects question today (and all the things I never knew about FCP) that I thought it wouldn't hurt to see if someone out there had one more ace up their sleeve. If not, I'll assume this is one of those things that can't be simplified anymore than what I'm doing.

ChrisThough David's Motion Tracking suggestion would eliminate alot of later finagling, you could try something similar to Reink's, without using Photoshop.
Try this...
1. In a seperate timeline, drop a Matte/Color Solid into the new timeline (using dropdown at bottom right of Viewer window).
2. Dbl-click the color solid, click on Controls tab and set Parameters as H/0, S/0, B/100. Then click the Motion tab/Crop Right-50.
3. Click the Viewer's Video tab and go to Export/QTConversion/Still Image (png) and name it something like WhiteMatte_CropR50.
4. Import that into your project.
5. Now with your two timelapse clips on V1 and V2 with in/out points at head/tails and both tracks highlighted...'Nest' the sequence...Main Menu/Sequence/Nest Item(s).
6. Next, with the nested sequence active (single clip will look light purple)...option-double click on it and and drop an Image Mask Filter on it, then drag the WhiteMatte.png clip into the 'image well' (little box that has a question mark in it). Keep the channel on Luminance.
7. Now, if you dbl-click the nest, it will open it's host sequence, that you can do your 'Motion Tab/Centering' on, without affecting the 50% split down the middle.
May seem like alot of work, but it's not really.

Split screen becoming unstable? (iMovie 11)
Hello. I am having a problem with a split screen movie that I don't understand. I have two film clips of me drumming that were recorded on two camcorders simultaneously. I have imported them into iMovie 11, and used the split screen function to create a movie with both camera angles showing. I have muted the audio files on the camcorder foootage, and imported an MP3 file of the drum track recorded using Logic Express. I managed to get all three of these synched together and it worked wonderfully well.
I then decided to add an additional film clip, and some titles, before the split screen movie. At first this seemed to work fine also. However, when I played the whole project back, I found that about 75% of the way through the split screen section, one of the split screen clips suddenly jumped and then seemed to repeat itself - so of course the split movie no longer was synched.
What is happening here? I noticed that as I gradually 'undid' things, I found a point where the split screen movie was 'fixed again'. It seems as if inserting a clip and audio before the split screen section is what caused the problem. Have I violated some fundemental law of making split screen movies ('Thou shalt not insert a clip in front of it?'). Visually, the inserted clip appeared to be entirely seperated from the split clip, and I could not see why it would be interfering with the split clip.
Many thanks.I think it's a good thing you attempted to troubleshoot it, and got it working again. I'm thinking the problem is with iMovie being able to playback everything in the Preview window.
What I've seen from reading a lot of posts on this Discussion Group is iMovie can get overwhelmed with 'Effects' types of material add to the timeline. Not to say it can't handle them, but sometimes maybe certain combos really make it work harder than others. So this almost always shows up as an inability to do a live preview of the Project Timeline, but can sometimes be fixed by working backward to the point where the preview starts working again. There is no iMovie documentation or even third party books written that really lay out what is the upper limit of what you can do on the iMovie Timeline. So the only other thing to do is operate under the assumption that iMovie is working extra hard to play one of your bits of media while doing everything else on the timeline. So here's a file format, and frame dimensions best practice guideline to double-check.
1. For video, you can pre-convert clips to the Apple Intermedia Codec and the Large frame size (960x540) iMovie uses internally to playback and allow you to edit accurately down to the frame level (1/30th of a second). One conversion program often recommended for this is MPEG Streamclip which can convert to .mov formatted internally as Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC)
2. For audio, you can pre-convert sound to AIFF 16bit @ 48kHz, which is easier for iMovie to playback than a highly compress format, say like MP3 (which is adding to the workload of iMovie as it tries to do a live preview). You can convert in Logic or any other audio program you like. Side benefit to 16bit @ 48kHz is that's often the sound sample rate of the embedded audio in video shot on most consumer brand camcorders on the market. It will make it easier to match sync when sampe rates of sound clips = sample rate of video sound
3. Lastly one thing that might help workaround the limit of iMovie's Live Preview playback is to export that well synced up split screen/audio combo to a new video clip. Just go to Share Menu > Export Movie... (choose Large Size) and save it to the desktop. Re-import that finished clip, and drag it into a new Project, start adding all the clips you want in front of that clip and it won't go out of sync as it's a monolithic video clip now with the video/audio locked to one another. -

SALV in Split Screen - not refreshing
I have a Report based program with Selection Screen
Upon entering valid Inputs program calls screen 100.
On Screen 100, I placed following elements
Docking Container
Splitter Container with 2 rows with Docking container as Parent
Placed a Toolbar object on the Top container of the split. Toolbar has 2 buttons BSID & BSAD
If user clicks BSID, then I have to show a SALV report in Lower Split
If user clicks BSAD, then I have to show a bit different data SALV report in same Lower Split
I tried several methods to refresh the data in SALV( I used 1 SALV)
Data is not refreshing in the second split...
I see that Lower Split container has children attribute set.. I tried to free() the lower container, but it deletes cmplete container itself, what can I do to refresh the data without completely redoing all the container stuff?
Also Children attribute in Split container is Read-only, how can I change this one ?

Hello everyone!
I have had the problem twice that after working on a sequence for a while it leaves out about ten seconds at the end when I export. The same sequence would have exported fine earlier on. I dont have any In and Out points, although I have tried this as well without success. I have used text on top of the image, and the audio files have been edited in Soundtrack Pro, but thats all the "fancy stuff" i have done. I have checked for blank spaces in between clips and dont have any.
Please help I have to submit something on Saturday and am feeling very unhappy ;-(
Very thankful for helpYUP! That's the problem. FCP doesn't work well with H.264. The biggest issues are sync issues, something you might not see until you export. The problem is that FCP SEEMS LIKE it'll work with that footage fine, it gives no warning. Apple fixed this with FCX, making it ask if you want to "optimize" the footage...meaning convert it to ProRes. FCP 7 and lower...didn't do that. Thus it lead you down a bad path.
If you have H.264 footage, you need to convert it to ProREs before you start editing. Yes, the file sizes will increase dramatically, but that's what you need to do in order to work properly. Working with highly compressed footage like H.264 is difficult, takes a lot of resources. Adobe does this by having you load lots of RAM and use a graphics card that enables a special acceleration engine. FCP 7 does not have this, so you need to convert.
The quick solution here is to go to the SEQUENCE menu and choose SETTINGS. In the COMPRESSOR menu there, click on H.264 and scroll up to Apple ProRes 422. Click OK. Render the sequence (this will render it as ProRes)...and then export. -
How to show subscreen in split screen

Basically i want to show one tree control in left pane and all relevent subscreens in right pane.
But, I am not able to create subscreen area in right pane.
How i can create sub screen area and/or subscreens in split screen control.

I also faced the same kind of problem previously. Actually there is no container which can contain normal dynpro screens / subscreens / ui elements.
However you can still implement the same kind of scenario.
As you said you want to have splitted area - left area should have tree control and right area should have subscreen.
What you can do is make use of docking container (class CL_GUI_DOCKING_CONTAINER) like -
1. Create your normal dynpro screen with a subscreen area as you wanted.
2. In a PBO module write code for creating tree control in docking container, like -

Dreamweaver CS5 crashes in split screen and other cases
EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING!!
It's affecting my productivity.
I'm running SP2 to Enterprise Vista
CS5 will open just fine. It will open a plain HTML file just fine. but then when I go to split screen and click on the design window I find that it hasn't completely painted the whole of the code into the design portion... in other words it has painted like half the page... and now that I've clicked on the design portion it will crash. The same will happen in reverse... if I'm already on the design window and click over to source it will crash.
I have checked my code thinking maybe there is something drastically wrong with the code that is confusing DW, but isn't that what DW is for?? to be able to edit code that doesn't work right as well as build pages and sites? I shouldn't have to go and check code in another editor. Regardless, the problem remained. (In the words of the great pessimist, Charlie Brown, "Good grief!")
Any ideas?! BTW, I had CS5 installed before and just had to recently re-image my HD. It worked fine before with the same information as above... the only difference being that my previous CS5 was an upgrade from CS4. My new install is a direct install into CS5.Jocke27 wrote:

There are cache files and other system files that are created every time a user account is created. Sometimes these are corrupted in the OS and it really has no bearing on the specific application but it can lead to erratic behavior. Creating a new user recreates all these system files and thus it's almost like starting fresh. It's one step shy of re-installation of an OS. So because changing the user fixed the issue, then we have eliminated the fact that the application is causing the error and we know the OS is causing the error.

I wouldn't recommend it. This can lead to more problems with the OS down the road with other applications and depending on where the corruption lies it can lead to issues with OS upgrades or even installing new software. The files that are typically most critical to users are stored in the Applications folder or the Documents/Sites/Pictures folders. You can easily drag them over to a new user account. If you have email being backed up for a product like Thunderbird you can also bring over many of the Library items as well. -
Quicktime Pro - Split Screen Question??
The help section says that you can edit a video to have a "split screen" - meaning that I can import a video into an existing video, and have them playing side by side (or one on top of the other). I have been able to do a picture in picture (however not playing at the same time) - but can't seem to find the correct instructions!
I am trying to show two athletes running the same 40-yard dash - comparing them either side by side, or with one video on top of the other - at the same time.
Any help will be GREATLY appreciated! (iMovie cannot do this!)

Organize the video clips and/or stills that you want to superimpose on to your main video clip, by having these in separate, individual iMovie projects (no matter how small). It helps if these are in the exact length/time you want later.
Now start with the clip in your iMovie project on to which you want to superimpose one of more smaller video clips or stills. Lets call it Main Clip. Export this (share) to Quicktime Pro in DV (full quality). make sure it has the same aspect as before (Quicktime tends to default to 4:3. If you want 16:9, read on).
In Quicktime, with this project open, select File ~ Open File. Select the iMovie file (in your movies folder) of the first clip/still you want superimposed. This will open in its own QT window. Select Edit ~ copy. If it is a movie clip then select all ~ copy (or you will only get one frame!). Switch back to the Main Clip window, and click in the scroll bar where you want the extra clip/still to appear. Choose Edit ~ Add to Movie.
You can repeat this as many times as you like, if you want to build a 'Video Wall', i.e. have several superimposed clips/stills on the same Main Clip.
Do not worry that the new clip overlaps or covers up the Main Clip, at this stage.
Choose Window ~ Show Movie Properties. The Properties Dialogue appears.
You will see a list of video (and audio) tracks. Track one will be the Main Clip, track 2 your new added (superimposed) clip. Click track 2, then click visual settings. From the Scaled Size pop-op menu, choose percent. Then type 50 into the first box. If Preserve Aspect Ratio is turned on you won't need to type 50 into the second box. You have made the pasted footage appear at one quarter its original size. The inset is now hugging the top-left corner of the Main Clip. If you want, you can type numbers into the Offset Boxes to shove it away from that corner (there are 72 pixels to the inch).
If your original Main Clip was required in 16:9, unclick (de-select) Preserve Aspect Ratio, and type in the relevant numbers in the two boxes, in Video Track 1.
PAL (for Europe):
Standard DV (4:3) 788 x 576
DV Widescreen (16:9) 1050 x 576
NTSC (for the USA):
Standard DV (4:3) 720 x 528
DV Widescreen (16:9) 874 x 480
This will not affect video track 2, but if that is also wanted in 16:9 repeat for that track.
You can superimpose, 3, 4, or more such 'overlaps' on the same clip, and spend a happy afternoon tapping away for each track in the Offset Boxes until you have got them all in the right place! You can even overlap them, if you can remember (or note down - hire a secretary to take notes) which track you want on top etc.
Save the completed QT file. Import the completed file into a new iMovie project. Import this into the original iMovie project, substituting the old clip you copied to QT as Main Clip for the new fancy clip you have made.
