My SSD won't boot on my HP Pavilion g6

Hi,
I'm having quite an embarrassing problem and I would be grateful if someone could help me. I have an laptop and I would like to replace the original HDD with an SSD, but the computer cannot read or format the drive. Here the steps I performed :
Inserted the SSD an another computer to install Windows 7 from it's installation disk -SUCCESS
Tested the SSD on several different computers - SUCCESS - the OS boots on the SSD, no problem
Inserted the good-to-go SSD in my laptop this time around : blue screen and the pc reboots.
When I execute the diagnostics tools, the window clearly promps me that the target disk to repair is "D: with Windows 7" - so I believe the computer dectects everything properly, but can't communicate with the SSD normally.
My guess is that the computer can't properly communicate with the SSD / can't handle SATA 6Gb or something like that, so I tried tweaking some settings in the BIOS, but didn't find any option for the disks...
I updated my computer, but didn't find any update for the BIOS. And my AMD SATA controller is up to date. Computer ref. will be added to this post.
Thanks for your help,
David
SPECS :
Pavillion g6 Notebook PC
Proc : AMD A8-3520M APU with Radeon HD graphics 1.60 GHz
Gfx : AMD Radeon HD 6620G
RAM : 6,00 Gb
OS : Win7 64 bits
HDD : Western Digital 750 Gb to be replaced with Samsung SSD 840 PRO Series 256 Gb

Why did you install Windows 7 on another computer? I actually suspect that what you are seeing is an incompatibility between the storage controller driver from the computer on which you installed Windows 7 and the g6, or a security issue with a Windows 8 designed machine. If the G6 came with Windows 8 you need to turn off secure boot and turn on legacy boot in the BIOS to run Windows 7.

  • Powermac G5 - ocz Agility 4 ssd won't boot

G5 Power mac - ssd storage upgrade - ssd drive won't boot when blessed.
    1. Installed 2 new drives into old G5. Upper slot - 2TB sata hdd, Lower slot - 256GB ssd OCZ Agility 4.
    2. Formatted both drives as Mac OS extended (Journalled).
    3. 2TB drive partitioned into a 'Data' partition. (~90%) + a 'Backup Boot' partition (~10%)
    4. Installed 10.5 onto the ssd.(Named 'System 10.5')
    5. Restarted system as part of install.
    6. System booted back to installed disc.
    7. Went into 'Startup disc'. Selected ssd with 10.5.
    8. Restarted system. System still boots to install disc.
    7. Installed 10.5 onto 'Backup Boot' partition on 2TB drive.
    8. System restarts OK.
    9. From 2TB hard drive system. set ssd to startup disc.
    10. System restarts to 2TB hdd.
    11. Restart system, hold down option, ssd appears. select as boot disc.
    12. System boots to ssd, and the welcome animation starts to complete the install.
    13. Download the 10.5.8 combo update and install.
    14. System doesn't reboot to ssd, but 2tb hdd.
Aware the booting requires a system folder (drive) to be 'blessed', I started poking around the web to verify if the ssd was set for the startup.
Running the command : 'bless -info' returned the following:
    finderinfo[0]:    215 => Blessed System Folder is /Volumes/System 10.5/System/Library/CoreServices
    finderinfo[1]: 239774 => Blessed System File is /Volumes/System 10.5/System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi
    finderinfo[2]:      0 => Open-folder linked list empty
    finderinfo[3]:      0 => No OS 9 + X blessed 9 folder
    finderinfo[4]:      0 => Unused field unset
    finderinfo[5]:    215 => OS X blessed folder is /Volumes/System 10.5/System/Library/CoreServices
    64-bit VSDB volume id:  0x9FC3EB20743384E4
So the system was 'blessed'. Tried the 'option key' method at startup but still not getting the ssd to appear as a valid boot option.
Looked on the OCZ website which has a Mac OS boot utility for flashing the firmware on the ssd drive BUT the drive is already on the current firmware : 1.5.2
Running out of ideas, short of re-formatting and re-installing the system onto the ssd.
    Any ideas of other fixes?
    (Feedback really appreciated).
Screengrabs of sata drive profiles attached. (hopefully)
    Thanks in advance.
Ps. Ssd drive appears on desktop reads / writes / etc when booting into the hdd.

    THANKS BDAqua FIXED !!
I hadn't installed the ssd into the top slot due to not being able to easily fit the apple rounded hd screws into the mounting tray - hence just letting it sit in the lower position. By working out the holes of the OCZ tray with some other hd screws, I was able to fit the apple hd screws then slot into the top (upper) position & the 2tb drive in the lower position.
Now all working as expected. Thanks again.
    Matt.

  • SSD won't boot after using Win 7 recovery discs

Hi, I bought a Samsung SSD 850 EVO 1TB for my HP Pavilion dv7-4012eg which had a 1TB hard drive (same size).
I took off the original hard drive and attached the SSD on the primary slot, leaving the original hard drive unattached until I configure everything with the new one not to confuse things.
I had burned the 6 recovery DVDs from my HP and had used them before on the original hard drive without any problems.
So I did the procure I am used to, and after the 6 DVDs the recovery said the laptop was going to restart to install and configure the OS. But when I restart it says there's no bootable device, that I should insert one.
I inserted the DVDs again and went through the whole process again just in case, but still got the same no bootable device message.
I installed Ubuntu and it was very successful, and I can boot Ubuntu fine. When I try to boot the Windows partition now it starts something but says something like that the installation was not finished.
I also have my Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OA HP license readable under my laptop, so I tried to download the Win7 from the Microsoft Software Recovery but it says to contact HP because the Windows was pre-installed on my laptop.
What can I do? Any ideas why I got the no bootable device error after going through the 6 recovery DVDs?
    Cheers.

I understand that you are replacing the hard drive in your Pavilion dv7-4012e with a SSD.  You were able to do the recovery but when it went to reboot you got the error no bootable device found.
Did you change the boot order in the bios back to the HDD first?
You could also try restoring the defaults in the bios so that it will scan for hardware and find the new hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • 128GB SSD won't boot after Windows Update

Hi. I performed a Windows Update on my PC a few days ago. All seemed to go well, but when I turned on my PC the next morning, it would not boot. I got an error telling me that the devide was inaccessible. I've tried using Windows Startup Repair, Chkdsk, TestDisk, nothing seems to work on the drive. Apparently the second NTFS boot sector is unwriteable?? This seems to be the root of the problem. Is there any way to fix this, preferably without reformatting?
I've reinstalled Windows on my old HDD partition and can actually still access the data on the SSD. I just can't boot up Windows from the SSD.
If the only solution is to reformat the SSD, how would I know that the drive itself is not defective? Was this problem caused by the Windows Update or do I have a bad drive? After I re-tune my Windows settings and reinstall my programs, I'm planning on cloning it to the SSD, but I don't want to go through all the trouble if the SSD is just going to fail on me again.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
    (I'm running Windows 7 Professional x64.)

attach the ssd to a working computer and run a bench program on it to see if it working properly.  If the read/writes are close to what is advertised, it is working.
Also, I'd suggest doing a full wipe of the drive before attempting to use it as your primary drive.

  • SSD won't Boot!

So i just recently got a new SSD to put in my Optical Drive. So now i have the old HD Drive and the new SSD. I want to boot from the SSD and put all my apps and stuff on there. I have already done this. I used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone everything from the old HD to the SSD except for the videos, songs and files that i dont want. So my SSD should have everything on it necessary to boot from. But when i tried to boot to it using the recovery option when starting up the computer, It did not show the SSD as something i could boot to. The computer does recognize the SSD in the disk utilities though. I also have the SSD formatted correctly as what i was told. It is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Is there anything that i am doing wrong? Or could the SSD just not be able to be formatted with my macbookpro since it is not an apple SSD? here is the SSD that i have:   http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=77394 89&tab=7&SRCCODE=WEBLET101SATSFY&cm_mmc=Email-_-WebletMain-_-WEBLET101SATSFY-_-S atisfy&utm_source=EML&utm_medium=main&utm_campaign=WEBLET101SATSFY
    Thanks for the Help!

That is ridiculous. The SSDs that website sells are no different then any other sold by anyone else.
It's because the SSD is in the optical by or the OP hasn't done the clone properly. Not cloneing the whole drive might make it Non Bootable. In any event the SSD should be in the main drive bay and the slower rotating drive in the optical bay.

  • Portege R30 won't boot from SSD after upgrade to SSD and HDD under CSM mode

    Hi
I upgraded my Portege R30-ASMBN22 to SSD (Crucial M550) and replace the optical drive by the original HDD with caddy.
In order to install Windows 7, I change the BIOS to CSM mode. But now the system won't boot automatically from the SSD. It only boot from HDD which is in the ODD spot.
I could press F12 while turning on my laptop, and bring up the boot manual. Here I can see my SSD and I can boot from it correctly. However, if I don't press F12 when it starts. It will always try to boot from HDD.
In the boot order in the BIOS, I only see HDD/SSD, USB Memory, ODD .... It doesn't give me the option to choose between SSD and HDD. Is there any other way to change the boot order among HDD and SSD?
    Thanks,
    Louis

    Hi,
I did the same operation to my Portege R30-A-17C, and have the same problem, is there any way to boot without pushing F12 every time.

  • Early 2008 mac pro won't boot from hdd when ssd is installed

I have Mountain Lion 10.8.3 installed on my 1TB HDD in my early 2008 mac pro.  That is the only OS install on my mac.  I have an OWC SSD formatted but left as an empty drive that I am trying to use but when it's installed my mac hangs on the blank gray screen.
My mac cold boots fine and runs fine when the SSD is *not* installed.  When I shut down and put the SSD into a drive bay the mac does seem to boot ok the first time, but when the computer is off for a while it will not boot.  It just hangs on the blank gray screen (no apple logo).    As soon as I pull out the SSD, the computer boots fine and runs fine again.  I am not trying to boot off the SSD, I am booting off the HDD.  The correct drive (1tb hdd) is selected in startup disk.
OWC has been helping me and I have tested 3 SSD's.  So it does not appear to be a problem with their drive.
The mac will boot into safe mode with the SSD installed.  It will boot if I choose the boot drive with the option key at startup.
    Mountain Lion was clean installed.
Could it be some sort of library pref or cache issue?
Any recommendations on what to try?

A HT does not find a lot of errors.
It doesn't look for bad sectors or directory or file problems.
Clone your SSD now that you have a clean OS and has the Apple updates on it. Before you make changes.
Install TRIM Enabler 2.2+ on it and any boot volume, to enable TRIM and so that Disk Utility's Repair Disk will trim cells. Mountain Lion Recovery won't  which is a shame, so...
Clone and keep bootable backup clone of your system to use for maintenance.
A really bad directory on a system drive will cause interference from booting.
SSDs really need extra care, and even with TRIM, to be repaired from time to time and couple times a year, to do an erase and restore from a current image.
Of course Mac OS system even iwth apps is small and doesn't need to have any data or media and fits on 120GB usually just fine and still have a good enough amount free so TRIM and Garbage Collection can work properly and not get low on free pages. But 20GB free should be the minimum free, and better to have more, at least whatever total amount is written out in a month.

  • Mountain Lion won't boot after restart (SSD problem?)

Hey, I just installed ML on my OCZ Octane SSD, everything went ok, finally the setup assistant requested reboot which is what I did. However, it got stuck while rebooting and now I can only see flashing question mark icon and ML won't boot at all. The only thing I can do is to boot up in safe mode. I guess that the problem is my SSD (indilinx controller) which ML can't handle (it ran on Lion just fine). Does anyone have the same experience? Any clue how to resolve this? Thank you.

I've confirmed with OCZ that there is a firmware issue with Mountain Lion and they are working on a fix as of July 31, 2012.
No word from them yet, other than the official statement.
I too had an issue with my Octane booting once after install, then never booting again. Had to to a TM restore, back on Lion till this is resolved. Kind of frustrating, but there must have been a low level system change that affected things.

  • Portege R30 won't boot from SSD after upgrade to SSD and HDD

    Hi
I upgraded my Portege R30-A to add a second SSD (Crucial M550) replacing the optical drive with the new SSD with caddy.
But now the system won't boot automatically from the original SSD.
I could press F12 while turning on my laptop, and bring up the boot manual. Here I can see my original SSD and I can boot from it correctly.
In the boot order in the BIOS, I only see HDD/SSD, USB Memory, ODD .... It doesn't give me the option to choose between SSDs.
Anyway when I boot in this way I get blue screens after a while in win7.
I have tried to instal a HDD as the second disc instead os SSD and the resut is the same.
Is there anything I can do to solve this, now I have to use the second disc as an external USB disc.
    Thanks,

I have experienced the same problem. (I don't know why my previous reply got deleted.)
The problem all relates to the CSM mode of Toshiba BIOS.
The solution is adding a boot partition (FAT32) on the drive that is in the original ODD spot.
Use a Windows 8 Installer (on a USB drive) to build a boot sector on that partition and direct it to the SSD where Windows 7 is installed. Then after you have done all of this, switch back to UEFI mode.
The system should be able to boot Windows 7 properly from the SSD in UEFI mode.

  • New Mac Pro - won't boot up with SSD drives attached

I have a new Mac Pro. It came with the stock 1TB HD. I installed two OWC SSD drives in the two optical drive bays. I booted up and the MacPro saw the two new drives. I set up the two new drives into a RAID0 setup with Disk Utility which worked fine. Then I cloned the 'Macintosh HD' drive so that I could use the two new SSDs as my boot drive.
When I removed the stock 1TB drive the machine will not boot up. I am stuck on the gray startup screen and it never even makes it to the Apple logo.
Even worse, when I reconnect the stock 1TB drive the machine will still not boot up if either or both of the SSD drives are connected. When I remove the SSD drives the machine boots fine.
Very weird - must be some weird RAID stuff going on.
    Any ideas?
    David

    Hi dschamis
Just out of interest, what application did you use to clone from your HDD to the OWC SSD?
I had the same problem, but I was using only one SSD, when I cloned from a VelociRaptor 300GB HDD to an OCZ Agility EX SSD in December 2009.
The SSD "bricked", and when I contacted OCZ they told me that they did not recommend cloning from a HDD to a SSD. In fact they definitely advised against doing so.
I had used SuperDuper to clone from the HDD to the SSD.
When I received the replacement SSD ( OCZ sent me their top of their range Vertex EX), I didn't take any chances, and I did a clean install of the Mac OS and all my applications.
Everything was 100% OK, and I have not had a single problem with the SSD since then, but I never clone to it or from it. I just use Time Machine to back up to a WD My Book SE II 2T external drive, but I do have the original 640GB Apple (WD) HDD as a backup/emergency system boot drive in an external enclosure.
I have just ordered, and received, an OWC MercuryExtreme Pro RE SSD, which I will be using as my system boot drive solely for my photography related applications, and I will use the Vertex EX for the remainder of my applications.
However, I am not even going to risk using SuperDuper to clone the OS or any of the applications from the Vertex EX to the OWC SSD, although OCZ said it was OK to clone from SSD to SSD, and I will do a clean install of the Mac OS and the photography related applications on the Mercury Extreme Pro RE SSD.
Hope all goes well when you receive your replacement SSD.
If in doubt do a clean install of the Mac OS!
    Regards,
    Bill

  • X220 Won't boot Samsung 830 SSD

    I have a Lenovo X220 laptop with a 320GB Hitachi hard drive,
and it works just fine. But I decided I needed more speed,
so I bought a Samsung 830 SSD for it. I cloned the entire
X220 hard drive to the SSD (using a USB external case and
HDClone4), and everything looks fine on the SSD (when viewed
with Partition Wizard on another machine while the SSD is still
in the USB enclosure). But the SSD will not boot in the X220!
It starts, and in fact it gets as far as saying "Starting Windows",
and then moving the four color dots (of Windows 7) around a
little bit, and then it momentarily flashes the dreaded
white-on-blue screen (so fast you cannot tell what it says),
and then it enters the recovery-menu screen. Bummer!
I called Lenovo tech support and they essentially told me to
GET LOST because they "don't support" me installing an SSD
(even though the X220 User's Guide shows exactly that).
I've used HDClone4 several times in the past (to clone hard
drives for my stable of Lenovo T60 laptops), and it seems to
always work just fine. So why is this not working for my X220
and Samsung 830? Note that, while I don't expect Lenovo to
certify compatibility with every flea-bit SSD on the market,
this Samsung 830 is highly regarded by many well-respected
reviewers (Tom's Hardware, my favorite, in particular).
Has anyone here heard this song before? Is there something
peculiar about the X220 and/or the Samsung 830? I'd sure
    appreciate any helpful advice. Thanks.

  • Lenovo G560 - Issue with won't boot and black screen after HDD upgrade

Lenovo G560 - Issue with won't boot and black screen after HDD upgrade.
What happen: My laptop was working fine, no blue screen issue, no funny business at all. I bought a new SSD Intel 120 GB and thought it would be a good idea to replace the HDD. I shutdown and disconnected the power adapter, waited a couple of minutes and removed the battery. I opened up the back case and replaced the HDD. And put all the screws back and put the battery back in.
Problem: The very first time I turned the power on, nothing happens besides a black screen. I pressed the dvd drive it works and opens up and closes. I waited for about 30 mins and still has blac screen. When I mean black screen, no bios menu, no logo, just a black screen with the fan sound on.
    I have tried these:
    1. Unplugged everything - battery, adapter, and pressed the power on button for about 60 seconds, nothing, the laptop turns on with the LED display on for both on and battery LED's. But nothing but black screen, no sound of windows loading just the fan and black screen.
    2. I tried putting back my old 2.5" and nothing but black screen.
    Thoughts and suggestions?

  • Mac Pro 2008 won't boot from install disc - black screen

    Hello,
I recently purchased a new hard drive to replace the original that came with my Mac Pro 2008.  I was able to format the new drive using Disk Utility. I am now at the point where I need to install OS X onto the new drive, but the computer refuses to boot from the disc. The disc is recognized by the computer (I can access the disc and am able to use the BootCamp applications, etc.) but I just get a black screen when trying to boot directly from the disc. The computer boots fine otherwise.
    I have tried the following:
I have tried using both the gray install disc that came with the computer and the Snow Leopard Install DVD disc.
I have tried booting using the "C" key and the "option" key but still receive a black screen following the chime (I've held these down for several minutes).
I have tried restarting from either install disc using the Bootcamp Assistant.
I have tried running the installation software to get it to restart from the disc.
I have tried a combination of the drives, i.e. trying to boot from the discs with just the new drive installed, just the original drive installed, and with both in bay1 and 2.
Everything results in the computer starting up, hearing the chime, and then nothing..just black screen. I have the original drive partitioned with BootCamp with OSX Snow Leopard and Windows 7 installed (I don't know that that matters).
I am at a loss as to what to try next. It doesn't seem like the superdrive because it is recognizing the disc, it just won't boot from it.
Any help is appreciated, thank you.

Clone should be a must  and easy to do and learn (learn by doing! 2)
6800 would 'qualify' as 5x70 series flashed etc and same rule: 10.6.5
In the past there was 10.4.6, 10.5.6, but not 10.6.6 - even though strong need for such a DVD.
    10.6.8 DVD would  be excellent
Lion or ML - buy, download, make an installer flash card would be what I would do at this point.
Then keep both - dual boot as you learn and test and see what ML does and waht you had that required Rosetta to support PowerPC. See www.roaringapps.com about that.
With Carbon Coyp Cloner - was share, now commercial, great utility been around since 10.2.2 at least - this time 2003. 10 yrs.
You can clone the system folders, you can even selectively choose. You can skip copy of most of your home account and do that separately to another drive if  you want.
Clone Windows with Paragon or WinClone and use Windows 7 or 8 DVD to do a system repair (automatic) or to edit the BCD file. It can and should - and all you do is boot Windows 7 DVD w/ only the one drive present and go at it. Piece of cake. But yes, Windows gets fussy if you change or remove or move. BCD to the rescue. A proper program for cloning like Paragon's "Clone OS" meant for going from disk drives to SSDs, knows that and how to do it.
Back to how to clone etc:
    Clone
Disk utility has RESTORE which will also clone your system but not the Lion Recovery partition. Oddly  Apple did not 'endorse' making bootable clone of the system which works too but most choose Carbon Copy Cloner - it works more consistently; it allows for smart update of the backup volume. Both can backup to a sparse disk image if desired.

The DVD is dependent on your hardware. And your hardware changed. The drivers for the 5780 and 6xxx are bundled in the OS and lacking. Minimum build thing.
Put the new drive anywhere you want. Does not matter. Can move it later. Can be drive bay 0-3 or a Firewire external or under the DVD drive.
When you clone pull the old drive and boot from the newly cloned.
After that keep a backup clone around all the time. Takes less than 10 minutes to do a smart update to copy just the changes to keep it current. So you have working copy of the system. I keep Clone "A" that I keep "as was" the system as of last month or whatever (like 10.7.4 before upgrade to 7.5).

Hi all, two days ago I was using my PC as normally and Windows needed to restart because of an update from Windows Update. It restarted and won't be able to boot again. I get a 04 debug code (Power on South Bridge Initialization) and I've tried clearing CMOS, without SSD/HDD... and there is no way.
I'm reading something about an Intel drivers update that can modify the firmware, do you know anything about it?
    Board: MSI X99S XPOWER
    Bios: Version 1.4
    VGA:   MATRIX GTX 780Ti
    PSU:   Enermax Platimax 850W
    Intel Core i7 5820K
    MEM: G.Skill 32GB in 4 sticks (8 GB each) @2400 MHz XMP
    HDD: OCZ Vertex 450 256GB
    COOLER: Akasa Venom Vodoo
    OC: 4 GHz 1.15v
    OS: Windows 8.1 x64
    Thanks

Windows is not corrupted, I've tried that SSD on another computer without problems and in my computer without HDD/SSD and won't boot anyway.
If I'm able to boot with the secondary BIOS, I'll recover the first one by the following steps:
    Quote
    BIOS recovery with AFUDOS command
When BIOS updating fails or causes the computer non-bootable, you can recover the
failed BIOS by the steps below.
    Preparation:
    1. Prepare a bootable USB flash drive.
    2. Download the latest BIOS file from the MSI official website at www.msi.com, and
    then decompress the file.
    3. Copy the AFUDE238.exe and the BIOS file to the bootable USB flash drive
    BIOS recovery steps:
    1. Power off the computer.
    2. Set the Multi-BIOS switch to the functional BIOS ROM.
    3. Insert the bootable USB flash drive you have made to the USB port.
    4. Boot the computer into the bootable USB flash drive.
    5. Set the Multi-BIOS switch to the failed BIOS ROM.
    6. Execute the below command to flash the BIOS:
    For example: AFUDE238 EXXXXIMS.XXX
    7. Restart the computer after the BIOS flashing is complete.
    Important
Do not use the Multi-BIOS switch when system is booting up.
But I have a doubt with the "Important" note because I need to change from safe BIOS to failed BIOS with the PC booted, right? So I'll use the Multi-BIOS switch with the system up...
    Thanks a lot
