My story of HDCP-troubles ATV3, still unsolved!

I had my ATV3 working just fine, streaming national TV directly from my Ipad with airplay, and even streaming movies from my Imac, with the app Air Video that let me start & stop everything with my Ipad. I was lucky and finally I found a topclass solution, and I don't need to burn dvd:s anymore. I reached my goal. Yippie!
Without changing my setup at all, suddenly after 5 month it just stopped working, and probably I get to see the first 3-6 seconds of the movie, then it freeze. Trying to play again, and the error-messege "The contain need to be supported by HDCP" appear on the screen. (My TV support HDCP)
Hello!?!?! It worked just fine for 5 months as it was. I really tried everything to solve the problem. Expensive highspeed cables, changning the inputs, updated my router, tv and everything else. Reset the system a thousand times. But NO! Just the 3-6 seconds of streaming and then it stops, telling me about the HDCP, that my supports. It wont work even with my ATV3 connected by networkcable to my router (I prefer cables).
If I connect my Ipad directly to my TV through an HDMI-adapter, exactly the same files works just fineto play. But Hey... What's the function about having an ATV, if you cant stream content to it?? It seems like this problem is escalating around our globe, and no-one, even Apple, seems to understand what is wrong... :-(
Listen to this then: Finally I was able to borrow a another ATV3 from a friend, with the same firmware. And guess what. It was working again! Gosh... It is something wrong with the hardware in my unit I thought, and I returned it to the store, with a long letter describing the problem.
After 1 month, I received a new unit from Apple, and I was really nervous hooking it up in my home.
1, 2, 3 , 4, 5, 6.... Freeze! Again! Even with the new unit! Start to get really tired about this and that it seems that there's no solution. Hey. It worked here for 5 months. Frankly. Nobody knows, so I send it back now, once again... :-(
Still... My friends ATV3-unit with the same firmware working just fine here in my setup.
You out there. The first one that come up with a solution to this "Twillight Zone Story" get some reward of some kind! ;-)
APPLE. What is wrong here ???

Thanx Rudegar. I posted my story to Apple at the same time. We'll see.
The strange stuff is that is that I'd come to the conclusion that some of their units have some major trouble with the handshaking of the HDCP-Protocoll. My first unit that was working fine for 5 Months on my big major Samsung TV, suddenly stopped, as I described here above. But it actually was working fine when I hooked it up on a cheap 20" LG Screen.
Do not forget that at the same time, my friends unit (with the same firmware) was working just fine on my big Major Samsung. And the fact that the same file and movies plays just fine, if i hook it upp with cablel direct to my TV. ATV is isolated as the bad guy.
Crazy & Strange... We''ll see when I get it back here again. I'll try your tip regarding to restore the firmware connected to my Imac.
Maybe, I now get the chance to include a brand new 72" TV in the familybudget.... ;-)

  • Aperture 3 embedded color profile bug still unsolved (worked in Ap 2)

RE: Aperture 3.x cannot display images with certain color profiles embedded. This bug was reported
on March 11, but is still unsolved and basically makes Aperture 3 unusable for my large collection
of scanned slides which have a special color profile embedded. Viewer and sometimes Browser turns
    either black or go haywire.
    What is it about:
When you scan slides with a scanner, you can generate a special color profile so that the image
looks good and you can then embed this profile in the scanned tiff and jpeg images. Most pro applications honor the embedded profile and display the image correctly. In our case, we
generated a special profile named Nikon-LS5000 (it was tested for correctness!):
    1) It worked fine in Aperture 2.x
    2) It never worked in Aperture 3.x
    3) It does not depend on the Operating System (i.e, the bug manifests itself in 10.6.2, 10.6.3 and now in 10.6.4)
    4) It is no question of a special Mac Model (the bug shows on iMacs, ibook profs, and iMacs 2010)
    5) It is irrelevant whether you start Aperture 3 in 32-bit or 64-bit mode
    6) It shows with jpegs or tiffs, no matter
    7) Preview.app or Photoshop CS4 display the images correctly!
    8) If one changes the embedded profile via PS CS4 to sRGB or ProPhoto, Aperture 3 works (but the
image then has radically different colors - so no solution!)
    9) The conclusion is that something affecting the processing of (some?) embedded color profiles has radically changed from Aperture 2 to Aperture 3.
I put a few jpegs with embedded color profiles and screenshots of how Aperture 3 behaves on the Picasa web:
    http://picasaweb.google.com/114939413495021552399/TestapertureBilder#
you are invited to download the jpeg- images and retry in your ownAperture 3 Library.
Maybe together we can find out what causes this bug which is very annoying for any
    serious photographer.

I have put the test material on another server - you can download a
zipped folder (Aperture3profilebug.zip) of all test images AND the color profile from
    https://depot.uni-konstanz.de/get/txau69
with any browser. (The problem was that the Picasa Software seems to strip the color profiles from
the test images, so I had to put them on another server. It will remain there until July 1).
    Regards and thanks for helping

i get too many ASC emails ... tried Frank Caggiano's solution ... even have all my email preferences set to NO .... but problem still unsolved....any suggestion? by the way, how do i unlist myself from ASC?

You cannot unlist yourself from the ASC. Only a host can do that and there has to be a very good reason for doing so, like a privacy concern or issue, something like that. If you do not want to participate in the community, just quit posting.
Did you also check the box at the top of the post that you participated in and check Stop Email Notifications? It is in the Actions Box in the upper right corner of each page on the website. You have to go back to the post that you were in and select that as well.
Do you see the Actions Box in the upper right corner of this screenshot?

  • Dvd burned won't play.. tried many methods of trouble shooting still nothin

I'm trying to burn some of my video work for an application for grad school. It is HD, but I exported to an mov. file threw it in dvd studio pro and when I build it's fine, and simulate it it works, when I burn it it work on my mac, but it won't play on anything else?? Not my xbox or dvd player? The menu is set correctly with buttons working/linking fine. When I open the "dvd" on my mac it has the video_ts folder in it. I burned two different kinds on a doual layer 8.5 gb - r and a 4 gb + r and still nothing? I have no idea whats wrong can anyone suggest any other trouble shooting/solving methods? thanks, I'm working against deadline for grad school so time is important.

You burned an HD DVD. This is a nearly defunct format that will only play on a Mac or Toshiba's discontinued HD DVD player.
You will need to start over.
Delete any folders that DVDSP may have created. They are of no use to you.
The material must be encoded as DVD (not HD DVD) m2v and ac3
When you start your project again in DVDSP, make sure you use a DVD (not HD DVD) template.
You will need to recreate all your buttons, links etc from scratch. There is no way to port an HD DVD project into a DVD project.
    Good luck,

  • 'Other' mystery still unsolved.

The problem of large, disturbing and obtrusive 'other' storage is still (unnacceptably) unsolved.
After following many suggestions, links, hints etc I am STILL left with an excess of 200GBs of 'other' storage amd no answers, as are many other users.
Is it possible that as an Apple community we are unable to solve this, or Apple itself? We are all proud of our Macs, but having to try justify this is impossible and not necassary at all. if you google this problem you find endless questions and numerous answers none of which seem to hit the nail on the head.
Omnidisk Sweeper, Disk Inventory X, etc, none have solved this. Mail is clean, Time Machine is off, I could go on but you get the point.
As a community, can we finally put this to sleep?
I urge all of the more advanced users to try and assist all of us with this problem, short of reformatting, what can be done?
As is perhaps obvious the issue causes overheating, performance issues amongst many other unpleasantries.
Here are some screen shots to illustrate the problem, the latter being taken just 5 days later showing how 'other' has grown.
    I thank you in advance.

I cannot detect what is taking up this space, no visual representation or logical calculation seems to be working, I do not have that much 'data' in any form on my Mac.
I once fixed a relative's problem by deleting Mail.app backups which filled up an entire hard drive, but that seems not to be the case here yet my computer does heat up and slow down until I delete something, which shows that the 'other' capacity is having a negative system impact, or that is is being calculated as real storage...

  • Crippled software or malfunctioning hardware...ipod mystery still unsolved

My last post was removed so here is the recap:
I have a 15gb "older" ipod that since the latest round of software updates no longer mounts or is recognized by my mac (or anyone elses for that matter). In trying to determine whether the problem is hardware or software, I switched the connection cable from my firewire one to the newer usb cable. To my surprise, it worked! I then tried several other firewire cables from my friends (thinking perhaps I had a bad cable) and not a single one worked.
However, there was one odd problem that I noticed while using the usb cable to back up my data so I could do a full restore and hopefully get the ipod working with my firewire cable again. The odd thing was that while the usb would mount my ipod, it would NOT deliver power to the unit. That meant that somehow the ipod was mounting but it was NOT getting power over the usb bus.
    This really confuses me.
I have already determined that I need a new ipod battery which is about $15...but outside of that, what is going on here? Also, when I tried to do a restore from the latest ipod updater it specifically said that my ipod required a firewire connection to the restore and NOT the usb. Luckily, I had the older updaters and was able to restore the ipod. I then checked it with Disk Utility and did repairs, permissions, etc.
However, after all this, my ipod still ONLY mounts via the usb cable. There is no data on it and I tried other machines than my own with the firewire cable to no success. The ipod refuses to mount, it only recharges itself...so I know the cable is not damaged.
So if anyone has any ideas about what is going on here I would love to hear them...
Either Apple has crippled the older ipods with their newest updates in favor of the usb spec versus firewire OR my ipod and its cable/dock are doing some VERY strange things.
My ipod is "old" but has never failed me once in all the time I have had it. I am a tech so I have plenty of background on what common problems and fixes are for ipods...however this time I am just plain stumped! It seems like it is hardware but then it does not add up, why does it only work with a new ipod usb cable? Again I tried with several other friends firewire cables and they did not work either...
Does my 15gb ipod think its newer than it actually is??? What could cause this behavior??
please share your thoughts and I hope this topic does not get locked or my post removed.

Well! What a very very odd thing indeed!
First question--were you able to use your FireWire cable to restore your iPod or did you have to use the USB connection?
Second--Have you tried connecting your iPod (using the FireWire cable) to another computer?
The issues you're describing lead me to believe your computer's FireWire ports may need to be reset. Your answers will help determine if I'm correct.
Sounds to me like your iPod is a 3rd generation (touch wheel, 4 buttons above the wheel). This iPod isn't capable of receiving a charge over USB (definitely an inconvenience for Windows users!).
Hope I've helped shed a bit of light on things

  • My story so far, TROUBLES

    Hi!
I know there are a lot of complaints about the MBP in this forum, and unfurtunatly this will add to it somewhat, but most of all i am disapointed with the service of Apple's Techincal Support.
So i have a MBP 1.83 gHZ week 12. It has always been unbarably warm, it has the whine, and it has a whining noise through external speakers when connected to a S-video through DVI.
I called Apple Support the first time and i was told that my only options was to take the computer to an Apple service center, so i took it in, had to take the bus for one hour. When i got there the guy was friendly and took the computer in for repair, he could not promise me that the whine would go away but it would become less apparent, said it would become 3db quieter. When i got the computer back it think that the case was uneven in places and the whine was still there, it still had excessive heat and the whining noise through the speakers where still present when connected to a S-Video through a DVI. (there is nothing wrong with the TV or the Speakers as they worked perfectly fine with my PowerBook G4)
I then decided to call apple again a couples of week later, and i was instructed to go to my nearest service center (1 hour by bus away) i told them this was not convinient and i was told that the only thing i could do was to buy an Apple Care Protection Plan, then the computer would be picked up and delivired again. So i decided to do nothing.
Then a week ago the right fan started to make a ratteling sound, quite loud when spinning slowly and fading away as the fan spins up and then becomming louder as the fan reaches higher speeds. I again called apple care and explained two problems Whining noise through external speakers and the rattiling sound. I was told that as i could not hear a whine through the speakers of the MPB there was something wrong with the speakers and they could not do anything. He then put me on hold and told me that there was an investigation into the high pitch sound from the right hand side, i told him it was a low pitch rattiling sound, he then went away and said it would go for investigation and i would here from apple when they figured it out. I then asked as i am leaving the country for 4 months that if, they figured it out, i would be able to get my computer fixed abroad, i was told no, it was a limited warranty and could only get it fixed in the UK. And yet again.. if you purchase an Apple Care Protection Plan it would become world wide. I yet again thanked politely and hung up. Went to read my warranty and it says 1 year World Wide warranty ?!?!
As for the rattiling sound, i would think change the fan, there must apparently be something wrong with it. But perhaps not? Should i expect to hear from them again?
And is one expected to buy an extended protection plan for a unit that has never worked?
    Any toughts?
Finally playing WoW on the machine for hours = very sweaty palms !!

Good, but, they could have done more.
... but I still kept on getting beachballs every now and then. I decided to >reinstall as I had nothing to lose. The problem was still there, but it was >very infrequent, then it just stopped altogether.
This is good news since you decided to move on to Sno.
Then came Snow Leopard...I got my Snow Leopard copy on launch day and did an upgrade as I didn't want >to do a clean install. ... Problems back, even worse ....
Unfortunate. Did you make any preparation for moving to Sno such as making a bootable clone on you Leo install on an external drive?
For now, I would try [resetting your SMC|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411]. Then, not everything or nothing probably will be fixed. You, then, in all likelihood will need to [reset your PRAM and NVRAM|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US].
Right now, at this point, I just feel like giving up the Mac switchover and >moving back to Windows.
There is no reason to take such drastic action yet. You'd be better off to work with Sno and install some Version of Windows on your machine using Boot Camp.

  • Trouble Encoding Still Video Images

    Hi All,
Newbie Premier user struggling to finish  first video. Here's my problem, and hopefully someone out there has encountered it before:
I have finally finished creating  a very basic, short (~ 2 min.) video (4:3 interlaced; SD DV-NTSC, ) clip containing several interspersed  title frames and a single JPEG image serving as my establishing shot.  For some reason, the high resolution JPEG image appears jagged and blurry once imported into Premier Pro CS4. After several hours of meddling around I have discovered an interesting phenomenon whereby increasing the magnification percentage from 'Fit' to '100%' in either the Source OR Program monitors restores the image quality. However, when this is done the video quality appears severly interlaced. Can someone shed some light on this issue because I am about to pull my hair out. Thanks.

    Hi Jim,
Thank you very much for taking the time to read and reply to my question.
I have rendered out to a .mov file using the DV-NTSC authoring codec and the quality of the video still image is very jagged and blurry. My export settings are as follows:
         Container: Quicktime .mov
         Codec:      DV-NTSC
         Qualty:      100%
Scan:        Progressive ( Video looks great...image degrades) ; Interlaced (Odd/Upper) field (Image looks great...interlace artifacts predominate)
                                                              ||                                                                                     ||
                                                              V                                                                                    V
         ASR:                                            0.9091                                                                             1.0 (sq.)
Since my first post I have imported the video into Sorenson Squeeze 5 and compressed using the On2 VP6 Pro codec with Flash 8+ HQ presets. The file size has been reduced ten fold and the video quality has held up well. I have also noticed and improvement in the clarity of the title slides, but the image issue persists. Any thoughts on what is going on here.
    Thanks,
    DANNY

  • Trouble Pulling Stills From Video

Hi everyone, I am new to these forums and I have been using iMovie 09 for about a year with almost no problems. I am encountering one now though and I was wondering if anyone could help me.
I have a project made up of stills that I have pulled from video clips. I have done this many times just by adding a still frame to the video and then choosing the reveal in finder option from the right click menu. This has always worked for me and I have been able to move/ copy/ paste theses files from the finder.
However, now I have about 70 pictures in the one project I made and when i do reveal in finder, not all of them are there. There are certain pictures that I can not see in the finder but I can in my imovie project. I was wondering why this is or how I can export these still pictures so that i can use them to say post to facebook or something. If it makes a difference I have deleted the original video clip from imovie but there are plenty of pictures in there that i have done the same for and they still reveal in the finder. If anyone could help me get these still frames to a file outside of IMovie it would greatly appreciated.
    Thank You!

    Hi there DBuck,
There are a couple of methods for making screenshots from your operating system. There is an article about how you can take a screenshots of any application, including a screenshot of a user-defined area, and that article can be found right here:

  • Sony reader PRS-350 - Problems still unsolved?

iMac does not recognize Sony PRS-350 Reader when USB connected. This problem was first described in 2009. In the Reader Library software, Error is displayed where it should be Reader. Moving downloaded books is impossible. Could it be true that Sony still has done nothing to repair this? Any advice is welcome, thanks!

The way you describe your problem tells me that it may be because of the
digital rights assigned to the ebook.  Publishers and resellers have the
ability to restrict downloads to your PC.
With ADE in Library mode, put your cursor on the title of the ebook.  A
small arrow will appear.  Put your cursor on that arrow, and a drop-down
menu will appear.  In the middle, you'll see the digital permissions
embedded in the ebook, and I'd bet that the one about copying says
'no'....  If this is the case, you can go back to the source and complain.
They might - or might not - be able/willing to do anything about it.
    Hope this helps!

  • Syncing Trouble - "Digital Still Camera"

For months now I've not been able to sync the pictures from my iphone back to my computer. Whenever I plugged it into the USB port I got a dialogue asking to install the "Digital Still Camera" and never being able to find a driver. Looking on the web lots of people seem to report this problem and seem to isolate it to a driver called usbaapl.sys, however I have discovered this is not the rogue driver.
If you are getting the "Digital Still Camera" problem then you are missing a driver from the /Windows/System32 directory called ptpusb.sys, which has a sister file called ptpusd.sys.
In my case the ptpusB.sys file was missing but either or both could be missing from your computer. Simply copy them from a machine that syncs correctly to your /windows/system32 folder and plug in your iphone. All should work again!
    Posted for information.

I have been having the same problem of not being able to access the digital camera on the Iphone for several months as well. In windows the driver would not be installed and could not be found anywhere. I reinstalled itunes, reapplied XP SP3, and called apple technical support to no avail. Everything worked fine on other computers. I finally corrected this issue by copying several files from a working computer to my main computer. the files are:
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\usbscan.sys
    c:\windows\system32\ptpusb.dll
    c:\windows\system32\ptpusd.dll
    c:\windows\inf\ptpusb.inf
I then registered the ptpusb.dll file opening a command prompt and navigating to the c:\windows\system32 directory. The command I used to register the file was:
    regsrv32 ptpusb.dll
I then right clicked on the ptpusb.inf file and clicked Install. I am not positive that you have to register the dll with windows since you are installing it, but that is what I did and it worked so I included it. That is pretty much it. I plugged the phone into a different USB slot and in windows found the correct driver and installed the phone. You might have to go into device manager and uninstall the current driver for windows to recognize the phone as a camera and for god sakes if you have a passcode on your phone unlock the phone. Now if I could only figure out what caused these files to disappear in the first place. I hope this helps someone.

  • Video issues on MBP still unsolved

I am making reference to this post of mine.
Still an unanswered question, the issue is very real in spite one OSX update and several iTunes releases.
I managed somehow to solve the problem with video files and video-stream playing in Safari simply by cleaning up cache and virtual memory but not with iTunes. Can't believe it's affecting only me.
So, in simple words, the same file when playing with QuickTime looks ok, when using iTunes it's unwatchable. The video engine should be the same so what could be the problem?
Sounds like fragmented files or vm but then again, why in iTunes or Safari and not in QuickTime?
    Please help
    /P

    Hi BSteely,
of course I have Perian installed however, the local files within reference are h.264 encoded (mostly with handbrake).
This is a real mystery as the same file renders properly when sent over airplay to my TV set.
The feeling is that for some reason, from time to time, the graphic card cannot cope with the loads of rendering some files. Looks like hardware acceleration isn't working properly.
Please note that this issue disappeared from Safari with just a cache clean-up.
    Really strange.
I have found several posts of users with similar issues but most of them are unanswered.
I would be inclined to classify this as a hardware issue but using QT everything works just fine.
You can compare the different quality by yourself checking here.
    Any ideas?

  • A-B driver problem, still unsolved

This problem got marked as solved, but is not. Any NI techs familar with this driver and/or A-B KF2?
I am having a problem with the Allen Bradley driver. The help file says it "enables serial comm via a KE, KF or KF2 module". I am using a KF2 device. I can verify everything with RSLinx, see my program, RS Who shows everything, but when I try lookout I always get the error "STS error 10 reading xxx illegal command or format". Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
Other details: DF1, half duplex, 19200 N81. It seems like it wants to momentarily read device data in Lookout before I get the above error message.

Below is some pasted text from the serial log file. I am trying to communicate with a SLC 5/04 through a KF-2, half duplex. I get the same results when trying a DataLink DL3500 (which os supposed to be the equivalant to the KF-2). RS Linx works fine through both devices, Lookout does not. Notice the funky characters inserted in the lines between the "[   ]" data.

  • Ancient MySQL problem, still unsolved

For the longest time, I've had a strange problem with MySQL. Basically, after a certain amount of time--it could be a few days, or a couple weeks--its CPU usage will go from around 20% to 80%, with exactly the same load.
If I shutdown MySQL and restart it, CPU load is back to normal. What could this be?
    ...Rene

With some great help from the MySQL mailing list, I believe I've identified the problem, which is fundamental to Mac OS X's BSD UNIX layer: DNS lookups are not thread-safe in the version of BSD (5?) used by Mac OS X. The workaround is to add skip-name-resolve to my.cnf, and ensure that MySQL's GRANT tables use IPs instead of host names. Here's some resources on the topic, in case anyone else runs into this:

They hired foreigners who probably use translator to communicate with their clients in Poland and they are pretty much useless.I had problem with pay pal payment this month, they charged me money, but I got the same message as everyone saying that there was a problem with my payment and that I should update my payment info, which I did and then got charged AGAIN. Those ladies from "customer support" downgraded my account to free, even though the payment was taken from my account (TWICE) and I presented them with transaction number or whatever. I just wish Spotify would take their clients EVERYWHERE equally seriously and actually hire people that can solve problems.I just don't know who else I could message, as I'm done talking to the Polish customer support service because they are clearly unable to solve my problem and expect me to sign up for the premium account ONCE AGAIN (they actually said that) and pay again, I guess? And I'm not doing that. Omg, I haven't been this annoyed with a customer service in a long time lol.
