My Super Drive suddenly stopped ejecting a CD - stuck

My Super Drove which has been working for 3 months and hundreds of CDs suddenly stopped reading a "home-made" audio CD after it was inserted and will not eject.  You can feel the mechanism cycling.  How do you get a stuck cd out?

Restart the computer and hold the trackpad down until the CD is ejected.
Best.

  • Optical drive suddenly stopped reading

I was in the middle of ripping a series of CDs in iTunes when the drive suddenly stopped reading the CDs' contents - I have tried several CDs, including re-trying ones I had already ripped. It does not get beyond track list. Do I need a new drive or can I solve it? I have also tried using a CD cleaning disc. 3 years old iMac with Mavericks installed, no previous problems. It still reads disc title and content list and loads / ejects correctly.

Reset the NVRAM/PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.

  • My Western Digital external hard drive suddenly stopped showing up on my Macbook Pro and disappeared from Disk Utility. It works on a PC.

My Western Digital external hard drive suddenly stopped showing up on my macbook pro and it disappeared from disk utility. I have tried making invisible files visible but nothing has worked and my hard drive shows up on a PC but not my Mac anymore.

What is the manufacturer of the external and how old is it? Does it have its own AC power supply or is it USB bus powered?

This is a very common problem.  Some are beacuse of the quality of media, some are because of the speed the media is burnt, some are because the drive gets dirty just where DVDs are concerned, and some are because of computer age.  The last problem is common if the machine gets more than 4 years old, the PRAM battery needs replacing, and all sorts of settings start malfunctioning, until lastly the system clock no longer works and it might not boot.  The others, see my FAQ*:

  • Drive suddenly stopped working

Hi there, can anyone help/advice on this issue. My Lacie external firewire drive suddenly stopped working, the green light on the power pack had died so i replaced the powerpack thinking this was the problem. Still nothing. Te HD does not show up on the desktop or disk utility. The drive does not seem to power up audibly like before, although the blue light comes on. I have tried it on several other newer more powerful macs in the office and still no joy. Ideas? thanks

hi there, thanks for getting back in touch. Yes I guess it could have just died The power brick is rated the same yes, same input power and output, also tested on another brick which belongs to another drive exactly the same. I dont think there is any warranty, it is about 5years old. Not tried the USB, I will give it a try though. Not sure what the drive configuation is inside the case, but may try and remove them and put them in another case, see if I can get any data off. Thanks

  • Late 2009 Mac Mini odd Super Drive Loading and Ejecting Noise

I have had no problems with my Mac Mini until now. Just today I inserted a disk into the super drive and it made a different noise to usual as it took the disk. Also, when I ejected it, it made different noise to what it usually makes. The drive still reads and writes fine it is just the loading and ejecting noise I am worried about.
    Help would me much appreciated
    cp1996

Sounds like you should be expecting the drive to fail more or less any time now. If the thing is still under warranty, take it in and try to get it replaced. There is a category for abnormal noise when selecting the failure type, so you should have a decent chance. But only if it's under warranty.

  • My flash drive suddenly stopped working.

I was transferring files from a Geek Squad 16GB flash drive when I got a error saying a file couldn't be read, then another error saying the drive had been improperly ejected, and the drive disappeared and then remounted. I moved a few more files, and I got the same error saying a file couldn't be read, then the same one saying the drive was improperly ejected, and the drive vanished.
Now the drive no longer shows up in Disk Utility, but it does show up on a System Report. It does not show up on my other computers—either my Mac Mini or a Windows 7 laptop.
However, if I leave the drive in the port, my Air will periodically try to re-mount it. The light on the drive will flash, and an error comes up that the drive is unreadable, and I am given the option to Initiate, Ignore, or Eject. If I go into Disk Utility before I make a selection, the drive is visible, but not selectable.
I have tried all three options with no success. I have restarted, rebooted, and rest the PRAM.
    Nothing works.
I need the files off of the drive, so what should be my next step?

I would try all USB ports and if no change, on another Mac.  If no success, the USB drive is corrupted.
    Ciao.

  • Booting my imac from an external firewire drive suddenly stopped working. Disk still mounts but it will not boot the machine!

I took my MacBook Pro in for repairs and erased the drive for safety AFTER having copied the entire contents to an external firewire 800 drive using SuperDuper!
The copy process made the disk bootable and I was able to boot up my iMac and run it just as if I were working on my MacBook Pro. After a couple of times working this way, the iMac stopped booting from my drive.
The drive shows up when starting up by pressing the option key but then, after a long time, the iMac shows a circle/slash symbol as if it can't find the system files.
If I restart without pressing the option key, the disk mounts on the desktop and I can use it as an external drive just fine!  I tried selecting it in System Preferences as the startup disk, but the same thing happens, blank grey screen with the circle/slash.
Since this happened with a Seagat drive - a brand that has failed me in the past many times - I thought it was a disk problem. I had backed up my MacBook pro contents to another Toshiba drive, and booted from there perfectly well for a couple of times...
Until the same thing happened! Thank God I didn't trash the Seagate although it makes very faint clicking noises that will keep me far away from using it again anyway... but that's another story!
iMac runs 10.5.8, the boot disk (and my MacBook) runs on 10.6.8 if that makes any difference... And now I'm scared that when I copy back to my MacBook Pro it might not boot up at all!!!
    What gives???

You need to reinstall Snow Leopard onto the external drive:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • DVD drives suddenly stopped mounting discs

I am sure this has been asked and answered, however I can't find a completely similar question.
When I came to upgrade my os to 10.6 yesterday, the drives both, fiddled around a then ejected the disc. Thinking it was a problem with the media, I tried loads of different dvd's, exactly the same. The drives open and close ok and I can see them in "about this Mac" also tech tools reports no problems!
I have zapped the pram. I seldom use these drives.
Any further suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

My dual disk drive fails to read some of my backup DVDs, which is a irritating. I have used a DVD cleaner, by the way. They were burnt on the machine originally and have been read in the past by both drives. I fitted 2 drives for just this sort of eventuality – and to do 2 backups at the same time, so I don't believe it is drive failure. I can restart the machine and occasionally they will read, but often not. I reduced the speed of burn from x16 down to x12 to see if it made a difference, but that is fairly inconcusive. The disks are stored 2-up in individual crystal cases, so scratching from sleeves shouldn't be a problem.
The disks fortunately CAN be read on my wife's old iMac, so I can network the data across.
Interestingly, some of the DVDs used are unbranded (plain white for printing), but some are 'Imation' brand. I would note that 'Tesco' (supermarket brand) DVD+R disks appear to be satisfactory at recalling data, for the time being.
The conclusion I draw is that it is down to the quality of the disks that are used. Don't necessarily go for bargain spindles of unbranded disks for valuable backups, although I cannot definitely say that branded ('Imation' in my case) disks will guarantee your backup security.
Judging by the lack of input on this message board on this subject, this may not be a widespread problem, but I would be interested to know if there is a definitive fix out there or if anyone can comment.

  • Dvd drive suddenly stopped reading disks is there a usb dvd rom that can be used temporarily

my dvd stopped working I then bought the targus external usb dvd player and then it didnt work either does anyone know if there is a temporary fix

The drive very probably needs to be replaced. You have tried everything else possible, but one thing. Try to boot from the drive using your system recovery disks. If the drive can boot the hardware is not bad and it is a Windows problem. It is not a registry error or the drive would not show up in My Computer. If it is a Windows problem it is an odd one.

  • Lacie D2 External CD Drive Suddenly stopped!

    Hi people.
I have a problem with my Firewire burner. I've been using it since the day i bought my Mac, as i wanted a burner that burnt at more than 24x. It's been set as my default burner, and i use it regularly for backups, CD burning etc.
However, one day after about a week of not using it, i went to use it. I used iTunes to create a playlist and clicked 'Burn' (set to Audio CD). It spent a good 45 mins initialising. I let it quit, re-started the Mac and tried again. Same again. I put a burned disc into the drive, and it just spun the disc at low speed without reading it-same for an OS install disc too-nothing's mounting. I popped onto the Lacie Website and whilst submitting a support question, it asked me if the device showed in System profile. I opened the app and had a look. I'm not sure if this shows it's connected or not, but this came up under Firewire: (Images are hosted on my Photobucket account)
    System Profile: Firewire:
    http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v520/DanThe440Man/Random%20Stuff/?action=view& current=Firewire.jpg
Under 'Disc Burning', i was presented with this:
    System Profile: Disc Burning:
    http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v520/DanThe440Man/Random%20Stuff/?action=view& current=DiscBurning.jpg
These shots are with the drive still connected. This shot is taken the next day, drive still connected, and shows the Firewire connection again:
    System Profile: Firewire:
    http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v520/DanThe440Man/Random%20Stuff/?action=view& current=Firewire1.jpg
As you can see, it's now showing nothing at all. I've tried the drive on my brothers eMac and it's the same. I've tried different firewire cables, checked connections etc. It's mains powered so power shouldn't be a problem. The only thing thats different on my Mac from the last time it worked is the iTunes 7.6 update from the previous (i keep all my software up-to-date). But surely the update shouldn't affect it working across the board? If there was an issue, should it not affect iTunes only?
The unit is powering up, and is working (in the sense the tray opens, lights are on etc)-it's just stopped mounting and reading CD's. It's also stopped showing up as an option under Preferences > Advanced > Burning in iTunes too, and Toast 8T can't find it either.
Any help appreciated-i can't afford to go out and buy a new drive!
    Dan

disconnect all you external devices when resetting ibook power manager, that means firewire and usb cables also.

  • I just brought my MacPro in for service and they replaced my hard drive. However, now my disc drive has suddenly stopped working! Is there anything I can do to fix this without having to take it back in for service, again!?

The nearest service center is 2 hours from my house and my computer isn't under warranty anymore, so I need alternative options. I'm just frustrated that my disc drive was totally fine until AFTER I took it in for service. I just paid a lot of money for a new hard drive from the apple store and now my disc drive has suddenly stopped working correctly. I tried with multiple CD's and DVD's...loading a disc, but my computer would just make a weird loading noise and then eject the discs. Now it has started fighting taking the disc, so I have stopped trying. Is there anyway to fix this problem without taking it in for service again and paying another boat load of money?
Thanks in advance for your help!

    ShelbyMackenzieLynne,
when you say that your disc drive is damaged, do you mean your MacBook Pro’s hard disk drive, or do you mean its SuperDrive (the CD/DVD drive)?
When you’d updated your MacBook Pro to Mavericks, did the installation succeed, and subsequently freeze up? Or did it freeze up during the Mavericks installation?
Which version of OS X was installed on your MacBook Pro before you’d installed Mavericks?
Are you currently able to boot into the Mavericks recovery partition? To see if you can do so, hold down a Command key and the R key while starting up your MacBook Pro.
