My SuperDrive reads and writes these formats. Is this right?

OK, another SuperDrive thread, I'm sorry! After some experimentation last night, I came up with this list of what my drive does.
Read Verbatim 4x DVD-RW movie - All OK (didn't see it first time though)
Erase Verbatim 4x DVD-RW - Toast & DU says Incompatible Format! Erased it in my external instead.
Write Verbatim 4x DVD-RW - Drive spits it out. So no erase or write, just read.
Read Imation 4x DVD+RW - Doesn't recognise there's a disk in there
Erase Imation 4x DVD+RW - No (see above)
Write Imation 4x DVD+RW - No (see above)
Write Imation 8x DVD-R - OK
Write Verbatim 16x DVD+R - Failed in Toast
So I can read DVD-RW, DVD-R, and write to DVD-R. That's it!
Mr drive is this according to System Profiler:
PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D:
Firmware Revision: A612
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
Cache: 2000 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW
Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media: No
So it doesn't do what it should do. Any clues? Can I upgrade the firmware? Or when I sell the iMac do I just include a list of what the drive is capable of?
iMac G4 Mac OS X (10.4.6) 1.25ghz, 17" USB2

David, rather than expieriment your Provile from your Pioneer tells it all except a couple of very important things.
The Media quality, in other words
The problem is multi-dimensional.
First check in your particular profiler on EXACTLY what type(FORMAT) of DISK's your burner will burn.
Next please do not just randomly go out and buy a spool of 30 50 or 100 disc's because they are on sale.
There is a HUGE difference in the type format disc's you buy
There is also a HUGE difference in the BRAND you choose, some are junk.
There is also a HUGE Difference in the SPEED of the media you choose.
If any one or a combination of any of the 3 mentioned above can cause burn error's or no burn at all or spit the disk out.
So it is a good idea to do a little homework on your Optical Drive and see just exactly what it is capable of and what it will use for media.
(ONE LAST NOTE)
Many of the Media Manufactures are becomming aware that many of the Apple Burners are having trouble with there Media. Maxell has just come out with a brand new one that is. Maxell 16X DVD-R.
The key is read the packaging. this new media tells you that it will burn at any speed from 1X through 16X, and it works very well on the older Optical Drives. I also opt to use the individual that include the cases there seems to be much better quality, not like that of the spools.
Remember Apples Drives to date are much pickier than those used in the PC community.
Cheers Don

If all you're trying to do is move the files from the Windows external to the Mac external, you can simply connect them both to the Mac and drag the files from the Windows drive to the Mac drive. If you want to move the files back and forth between them, you'll need to establish the format of the Windows external. Macs can read and write to FAT32 and exFAT (which can handle files larger than 4GB) formatted drives but can only read NTFS formatted drives without additional software. With the Windows drive connected, you can check its format with Disk Utility.

• How to read and write the data like this(is JSON?)?

i have some data like below(is json?),how to write them into
the database?
i user coldfusion 7.

Thank you very much!

You need to parse it and then insert the records into your
database.
Take a look at
CFJSON it is a JSON
serialiser and de-serialiser.
Once you have converted it to native CF datatypes you can
loop through it and insert it into your database.

I am not sure why you get that error. One thing you can do is a SMC reset then try to format it again. However that being said I'm not fan of WD external HD's primarily because we see a lot of troubles with them on Macs. Their internal HD's are fine so that narrows it down to their enclosures. If the problem persists I'd return the drive and buy one of the following:
OWC (www.macsales.com) Mercury Elite Pro series
Lacie Quadra d2 series
G-Tech G series
SMC RESET

• Turn on the computer.
• Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

• How can i format an external drive so as to read and write from both windows and mac side

i recently bought a macbook pro and used bootcamp so as to be able to run win7 and mac. I now wish to have an external drive so as to backup and tranfer files between the two os's. Specifically to read and write form either windows or mac. How can I do this?

Format it as FAT.

• HT2963 I have a 1 TG external drive that is formatted to Windows NTFS and is read only, how do i get it to read and write on my Mac OS X 10.6.3?

I I have a 1 TG external drive that is formatted to Windows NTFS and is read only, how do i get it to read and write on my Mac OS X 10.6.3?

Install software such as Paragon NTFS, or reformat it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32. Mac OS X 10.6.5 and newer can also read and write exFAT partitions.

• Is SuperDrive able to read and write DVD DL?

I remember when I first bought my MacBook, it says it comes with SuperDrive, doesn't it able to read and write DVD DL? But, when I go to System Profiler >> Disk Burning, I don't see DVD DL-Write, but I only see CD-Write and DVD-Write. Does it mean my SuperDrive is not able to write DVD DL?

Look at the text to the right of DVD-Write to determine what types of disks the computer can burn. If the cache is listed as 0KB, restart the computer with the Option, Command, P, and R keys held down, release the keys at the second startup chime, and check again.

• Can I save to memory sticks for read and write access?

I use M.S. Office for Mac to do my admin. I would be very grateful if anyone can help with my queries.
I want to save work to media that allows me read and write access. Saving to discs (of any type) does not allow any editing.
1. If I save to a memory stick will I be able to save and update my work when I want to?
Also;
2. Would a memory stick have to be formatted with to be suitable for Mac?
3.If the memory stick can be used for the purpose, I want to encrypt it; how would I do this please?
4. Would encrypting place a limit on the capacity of the memory stick that can be used, e.g. I have a choice, including 8Gb and 16Gb.
5. I have heard that passwords can be created by Mac; what is the method for doing this please?
Many thanks for in advance.

There is terminology here I am unfamiliar with. I feel I have embarked upon a complex path.
I do not know what HFS+ is.
HFS+ is the Mac OS X file system. Hierarchical File System Plus (Plus as it used to be HFS, but then they improved it and said +)
By default a USB flash drive generally comes formatted with FAT (from the Microsoft MS-DOS days, but is a universal format - it might come with FAT32 or exFAT as well - still from Microsoft). Mac OS X can read/write these, HOWEVER, its FileVault whole disk encryption is only designed to work with HFS+, which is why I mentioned it.
Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility can be used to reformat a disk, USB Flash drive, etc... NOTE: reformatting does erase everything on a disk, so keep that in mind.
What is the difference between File Vault and .dmg in disk utilities?
FileVault is whole disk encryption. Everything on the disk is encrypted. and you need to enter the password just to mount the device.
A .dmg file is a regular file that happens to contain a file system inside of it. When you double click on the .dmg file, Mac OS X will mount the file system inside as if it was a disk. If the .dmg file is encrypted, then you will be prompted for the password before Mac OS X will mount it. A .dmg is just a container for a file system. Inside that contain is a full file system with files and directories just like any other file system.
You can create read only .dmg files, you can create read/write, you can create sparse (you declare the maximum side, but the initial size of the .dmg is small and will grow to the maximum size as you add things to the .dmg, you can create encrypted .dmg.
Since a .dmg is just a file with no special attributes on the outside, it can be copied around. You can copy it over the network, you can store it in the cloud, you can put it on a USB Flash drive, you can put it on an external disk, etc...
If the device you put it can be mounted by Mac OS X, then you can double-click on the .dmg and it will mount the file system inside the .dmg and you will be able to access the files in the .dmg
This even includes USB Flash drives that use the FAT format family. But you existing external disks can be used for that as well.
If I used an external hard drive for the purpose I have in mind, would the disk .dmg utility allow me to access folders and files for editing or should I approach the task in a different way? I would still wish to encrypt.
As I said above, the .dmg is a full file system where you can store files and folders inside a .dmg container file. And you can encrypt the .dmg so it is secure.

• I have an external hard drive, from Iomega. However, I cannot copy or save any file to it. On my PC it says that is possible to read and write in it, but in my Mac, it says I can only read. can somebody help me?

I have an external hard drive, from Iomega. that I can open and see my files. However, I cannot copy or save any file to it. On my PC I have it says that is possible to read and write in it, but in my Mac, it says I can only read. can somebody help me?
Also, Im a photographer, so I like to name a lot of files at the same time (used to do in on PC and it was very usefull.) cannot find out how to do it on my Mac. Really appretiate if some one can give me a solution! Thanx

Your drive is formatted with the NTFS file system. OS X can read but not write to the NTFS file system. There are third party drivers available that claim to add the ability to OS X to write to an NTFS partition. I have not tried them and don't know if they work.
The only file system that OS X and Windows can both write to natively is the FAT32 file system.

• Need help to read and write using UTF-16LE

Hello,
I am in need of yr help.
In my application i am using UTF-16LE to export and import the data when i am doing immediate.
And sometimes i need to do the import in an scheduled formate..i.e the export and imort will happend in the specified time.
But in my application when i am doing scheduled import, they used the URL class to build the URL for that file and copy the data to one temp file to do the event later.
The importing file is in UTF-16LE formate and i need to write the code for that encoding formate.
The problem is when i am doing scheduled import i need to copy the data of the file into one temp place and they doing the import.
When copying the data from one file to the temp i cant use the UTF-16LE encoding into the URL .And if i get the path from the URl and creating the reader and writer its giving the FileNotFound exception.
Here is the excisting code,
protected void copyFile(String rootURL, String fileName) {
URL url = null;
try {
url = new URL(rootURL);
} catch(java.net.MalformedURLException ex) {
if(url != null) {
BufferedWriter out = null;
BufferedReader in = null;
try {
out = new BufferedWriter(new FileWriter(fileName));
in = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(url.openStream()));
String line;
do {
line = in.readLine();
if(line != null) {
out.write(line, 0, line.length());
out.newLine();
} while(line != null);
in.close();
out.close();
} catch(Exception ex) {
Here String rootURL is the real file name from where i have to get the data and its UTF-16LE formate.And String fileName is the tem filename and it logical one.
I think i tried to describe the problem.
Plz anyone help me.
Thanks in advance.

Hello,
thanks for yr reply...
I did the as per yr words using StreamWriter but the problem is i need a temp file name to create writer to write into that.
but its an logical one and its not in real so if i create Streamwriten in that its through FileNotFound exception.
The only problem is the existing code build using URL and i can change all the lines and its very difficult because its vast amount of data.
Is anyother way to solve this issue?
Once again thanks..

• How do I set an external HD permission to read AND write?

I received an iMac for Christmas and need a little help. I have a 2TB external HD that contains .shn and .flac files of GD concerts (and other music). I managed to find Cog that will play them...but what I want to do is download them and move them upon completion to the external HD. I can not do this because the HD is read only. I can move stuff to a SD card because it is read and write. I assume when I change the permission I will be able to move the folder of a show to the HD as well. Surely this is simple... Thank You and sorry for the dumb question!

Your external hard drive is likely NTFS formatted for use with a PC.
OSX can read but cannot write to NTFS formatted volumes. You can install software that allows writing to a NTFS drive, as Niel has suggested, or you can reformat your external drive using Disk Utility for use with your Mac.
If you decide to reformat your drive for Mac use, copy your data off to another drive before you proceed.

• How do I read and write to text files on a remote computer's hard drive

I would like to read and write data to a text file on a remote computer. This is easily accomplished using one of the file functions such as "write characters to file.vi". If I am already connected to the remote computer, all I need to do is specify the path to the particular file and it will work fine.
My problem is that I want to connect to the remote computer programatically within LabVIEW (I do not want to have to use the computer's OS to establish the connection. Is there a function that I can use to do this?

Yariv,
You should really start a new thread with a new question like this, so that more people see it. Some people look primarily at threads that have no responses yet. Also, don't post the exact same question in multiple places. Or, if you must cross-post to some other forum, make sure to mention it in your question text.
I'm happy to be a brick in your Western Wall, but I'm not sure what the main objective is here. Is the main problem really getting access to the "X bytes received in Y seconds at Z bytes/sec" string? Or is it accomplishing the file transfer? And what OS and LabVIEW version are you running?
I think your problem is that you the LabVIEW System Exec command does not allow for the degree of interactivity that you need if you want to issue a sequence of commands to a command-line executable. However, under Windows XP (and, presumably, other Windows versions, though I can't check), you can tell the FTP executable to use commands from a textfile script by using the -s switch, and you can override the prompts during multiple file transfers with the -i switch:
ftp -i -s:FILEPATH SERVERNAME
If you issue a command in this format to System Exec, and make sure to create a file at FILEPATH with your command sequence (one per line), then you should at least accomplish the FTP actions. This won't give you the transfer details in the standard output, unfortunately. However, if you just want a general sense of how much was transferred and how quickly it happened, you can code that in LabVIEW by getting the resulting file sizes and using Tick Count before and after the System Exec call to see how long the transfer took.
Hope that helps,
John

• Modbus Ethernet read and write to a Eurotherm 6180XIO Modbus server using LV8.2 shared variables

I am having EXTREME difficulty trying to establish communications with a Modbus device using LV8.2 shared variables. The device is a Eurotherm 6180XIO Datalogger configured as a Modbus master. The PC and a cFP-1804 are slaves. All IP addresses are set correctly. This approach using shared variables would seem simple, but I can't find any examples or proper guidance on how to get it working. I am trying to avoid having to mess around with TCP/IP, OPC, or any other old-fashioned method.
I have read many threads on related topics but none directly apply to this situation. I have created a library containing a Modbus I/O server and shared variables bound to read and write holding registers. I have followed all recommended tips for creating such variables but I can neither read or write data. All data types are U16 due to Modbus protocol limitations. I have also applied the LV x10 factor in the most significant digit in the register offset (6 digits instead of 5).
I have a cFP-1804 on the same network which reads into the datalogger OK. The registers I use are 31000 (for CH0 on module 0, 31002 for CH1, etc) and the data can be read as FLOAT32. I have updated the firmwate on the 1804 to the latest level. I cannot even get shared variables to read SGL values. Using registers 301001 for CH0 and 301002 for CH1 I can only read U16 values, and not a 2-word SGL.
Third party Modbus simulation software is able to write to and read from registers very easily, but not LabVIEW.
Some questions are:
- do I use a Modbus master or slave as an I/O server in the library as a target for binding the shared variables?
- is there some other wierd translation in register offsets between LabVIEW and traditional Modbus?
- is this actually possible using shared variables or am I wasting my time?

Sending the whole 60-character string using a string or array would be the most efficient. I have tried both methods, and these only cause the datalogger to flag a message log but no text is displayed.
For a string variable, I have used the following binding "My Computer\Modbus Test.lvlib\ModbusServer6180\442305", where ModbusServer6180 is a Modbus I/O server configured with the logger IP address, and 42304 is the register offset at the start of the text block in the logger. I need to write to 30 consecutive registers starting with this one. I am not using buffering and have not enabled single writer.
Can anyone confirm whether this method should work in 8.2?
Does the string need a special termination character?

Sure you can read and write at the same time. But normally you would be reading from one place and writing to another place.
I rather regret avoiding the OP's earlier post asking how to combine two classes. I looked at the two classes posted and realized the best thing to do was actually to break them into more classes. But I also realized it was going to be a big job explaining why and how, and I just don't have the patience for that sort of thing.
So now we have a Big Ball Of Tar™ and I feel partly responsible.

• External hard drive to be read and write for MAC & PC

All,
I recently bought a Mac Book Pro and have always used a PC until now, which i used an external hard drive to use to copy files to. My mac does not let me write to this hard drive.
What do i have to do to be able to read and write to this hard drive on my MAC & PC?

your drive is formatted NTFS. OS X can only read but not write to NTFS drives. you can reformat it FAT which is writable from both OS X and windows. (this will wipe the drive of course). However, FAT is an inferior format with a number of limitations. another option is to install macfuse and NTFS-3g on your mac
http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/
It will let you write to NTFS formatted drives.
