My system CPU goes to 80%

My system CPU goes to 80% and then it gets really slow. and then i have to switch all the applications off and wait for a minute till it goes back down again.
I have a Mac Mini i5 chip from late 2012, 4gb ram and 500gb storage.

Hello,
Open Activity Monitor, Show:>All Processes, sort on CPU%, see if anything using too much CPU% when this happens & which App(s) or Processes are using it.
Also...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed. Or an errant process eating up RAM.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • MacBook Pro System CPU Spikes When Unplugged

Upgraded to Mavericks a few days ago and, whenever I unplug my MacBook Pro 13" (Early 2011 - 2.3GHz Intel Core i5 - 16GB RAM 1333MHz) and run just on the battery, my system CPU usage goes through the roof which results in my Mac running/responding very slowly and buggy.
However, looking at the iStat widget on my dashboard, it's reporting that my CPU isn't running hot nor does my MacBook Pro feel hot at all. It's also showing that I still have 10GB of RAM free.
As expected, once my magsafe is reattached to my laptop and plugged back in, the system CPU returns to a normal level. In Activity Monitor, it shows kernel_task as being the culprit.
I queried the log as suggested by Linc and TextEdit had something for me:
    Dec 10 15:51:31 My-MBP kernel[0] <Debug>: Process Setup Assistant [307] disabling system-wide I/O Throttling
Anyone have any idea what this could be? Seems like it should be a simple software config but I just don't know.
Additionally, I also ran EtreCheck. These are the results when it's running unplugged:

Does anyone have any ideas on why this is happening or are experiencing anything similar? I can't for the life of me figure out if it's a Mavericks issue or if it's a hardware issue.  Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks!

You're not going to believe this but I just now found a working solution!!!
Thanks to the talents of a man named, Rhys Oxenhams, and his flawless tutorial, eveything's running normally now!
BEFORE READING ON...make sure you backup all of you data!  I take no responsibility for anything bad that happens to your machine.  I'm providing this information because it worked for me. There's no guarantee it will work on your system.  TAKE ALL NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS BEFORE READING ON and BACKUP YOUR DATA IMMEDIATELY.
Here's what you need to do:
    1. In the Finder menu bar, click on Go and select Computer. 2. In the window that comes up, double-click your computer's HD. For me, it's Macintosh HD. 3. From there, click on System > Library > Extensions. 4. Now look for a file called IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext. 5. Right-click on IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext and choose Show Package Contents. 6. In that new window that comes up, click on Contents > Plugins and locate ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin.kext. 7. Just like in step 5, right-click on ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin.kext and choose Show Package Contents. 8. Just like in step 6, in that new window that comes up, click on Contents > Resources and locate your Model Identifer.
         • In case you don't know what your Model ID is, click on the  in the top left of the screen and choose About This Mac     • In the window that comes up, click on More Info...     • In the next window that comes up, click on System Report     • In the very first screen, towards the top, locate the entry Model Identifier          - Write this info down on a piece of paper. You will need it. In my case, I wrote down MacBookPro8,1 9. Back in the Resources folder, locate the .plist file that has your model identifier. In my case, it was MacBookPro8,1.plist 10. You're not going to delete that file but instead move it to a differnt folder inside your home folder--doesn't matter which folder, just put it somewhere inside your home folder. 11. Restart your machine and you are good to go!
Let me know how it turns out for you.  REMINDER: Backup your data before doing this!

  • FireFox CPU goes to 100% by backgroundshift

    Sorry for my bad english..
Running a simple scrollroutine my cpu use is low :

    Hello,
if you have your note for a year or more and did not take it for an internal heatsink clean and essentials parts, yet.
One possible problem here is: Heatsink blocked with dust (CPU goes to 100% state svchost takes all resources)
90% of the high temperatures problems, unexpected shutdowns, 100%CPU all the time without running background processes, very hot keyboard area, freezing programs, are caused by the heatsink blocked with dust.
The normal temperature for the processor is between 55C and 79C. For the motherboard is around 55C~60C. When the heatsink is blocked those temperatures can reach 99C (processor) and around 80C (motherboard). Measure in Celsius degrees.
You can check it out how "hot" your Qosmio is.
Download the Everest ultimate 2006 edition V 3.50.761, look for it with Google search.
Run it and see the temperatures for CPU, Processor and motherboard on your Qosmio:
    See:
    http://www.rabayjr.com/vista/qosmioeverest.jpg
Run the System stability test (find it under tools menu) for 10 minutes aprox.
Watch the temperatures at taskar. If it reachs more than 92C for the processor on stress mode, its time to clean the heatsink and all essential parts of your Qosmio. Attempt to the processor fan RPM, too, if they run fast and noisy, you really must perform a clean.
But it depends on the ambient environment, for a 30C summer day the processor temperature almost get the 90C. this is normal in stress mode. And the fans run without noise. Slow RPM mode.
All measured in Celsius degrees, for Farenheith please convert it.

  • 2011 Mac Mini, 10.8.3, SSD - System CPU at constant 10%, frequent 0.5 sec cursor freezes

Hi.  I have a Mid-2011 Mac Mini with 8GB of RAM. I have an SSD installed in it as the primary drive, along with another internal 2TB drive and an external USB 2TB drive for media. This machine is mostly used as a media server and player.  It's been running Mountain Lion since I bought it (refurb) last year.  I upgraded to 10.8.3 as soon as that came out, and was running for a while without any problems. This evening, though, I started to notice some problems.
The main issue is that the CPU (well, one core) seems to be constantly under load. Under Activity Monitor I'm watching the system load (but not user load) hover between about 8% and 12%, all of the time.  But looking at the program list, I don't see anything taking up more than about 2% of CPU, and that is taken up by Activity Monitor itself.
The annoying way that this manifests itself in the UI is that if I'm just randomly moving the cursor around in a circle, I can watch it periodically hang and freeze for about half of a second every 3-4 seconds or so. Meanwhile, everything else on the system also seems to freeze up for about half a second at the same time, which makes watching Netflix extremely irritating. (With Netflix the sound plays as normal, but the video freezes briefly every few seconds - I verified this in both Firefox and Chrome so I doubt it's a browser thing.)
I've already tried some troubleshooting steps myself. (None of this has worked yet.)
I saw a lot of messages in console about "mdworker deny mach-lookup com.apple.ls.boxd", which googling around for led me to this page; per the instructions there I booted into safe mode, waited a bit and rebooted, and now I don't see those messages any more. (I didn't mess with the sandbox.sb file, about which, really? Apple implemented this in Scheme or something?)  Just to be on the safe side, though, I disabled Spotlight indexing with sudo mdutil -a -i off.
I opened Disk Util and ran a verify on all three disks, no errors.  I found one or two permissions that needed repairing on the startup SSD and repaired them.  The problem persisted.  I also cleared out my caches with Maintenance while I was at it.
As a side note, even when I rebooted in safe mode, I was still seeing the same behavior (periodic half-second mouse freezes, system CPU averaging a constant 10% or so in Activity Monitor).
I also spent some time reading this other thread which looked like it had some very useful advice (unlike that poster, though, my Spotlight processes aren't crashing).  So I went ahead and followed Linc Davis's first set of instructions in that thread.  Here's what I've got for steps 1 and 2.
    1. Activity monitor
Highest-CPU process is Activity Monitor at about 1-2% CPU
    CPU: User 1%, system ~10%, idle ~90%
System memory: Page outs 0, swap used 0 bytes
Disk activity: Reads in/sec 0, Writes out/sec 0 (these infrequently spike up to about 40 or 50 max)
    2. System log
I put up a gist for this here.  It's my last 50 messages or so, probably some are coming from the most recent reboot.  I can see the "IOHIDSystem cursor update overdue. Resending" messages which I presume are linked to my cursor freezes, but nothing else looks obviously suspicious to me.  The stuff about "menucracker" is down to MenuMeters; I uninstalled it and rebooted at one point just to check, but it didn't seem to make a difference so I reinstalled it.
As far as kexts go, the only one I had that wasn't Apple was SoundFlower. I actually need that one, I use it to stream files from Plex, but I went ahead and uninstalled it anyways, and it didn't make a difference.  My launchd lists start up sickbeard, sabnzbd, and plex, but I've manually quit all of those and the problem persists, so I highly douby any of them are to blame.
Any advice greatly appreciated.  Is there a better way that I can see what exactly is causing the high system CPU load, like can I list processes by number of kernel calls or something?  I did try top and ps but I didn't see anything obviously different from Activity Monitor in their output.

Nope, I don't have a "/Users/charon/Library/Mobile Documents" directory, let alone anything underneath it. Is that like an iCloud thing or something?  I tend to avoid the Apple-supplied services when I can (I don't use iTunes either unless I can help it).
As an update, as of about two days later this problem seems to have solved itself. Possibly sleeping and waking did something to it (though that seems unlikely given how many times I rebooted), or else there was just some long-*** kernel process that finally worked itself out.  But my system CPU is back down to normal and the cursor freezes are gone.
    ??? it is a mystery! ???

Now is not. configuration hasn't been changed.
Any one knows how I can find out what is interrupting or stopping the system from going to sleep?

  • Cannot keep Server up and running. Shutdown requested by OVM. The system is going down for system halt NOW!

I have OVS 3.x.x and OVM 3.x.x running on the same physical server.  I had some issues trying to configure storage via OVM and  I issued a shutdown (I think) from the OVM Web Interface.  Now I am unable to keep the server up and running.  Everytime I turn on the server, after Oracle VM Manager starts, it shuts down the server automatically within a minute or two after startup.
I am able  to login to the server via Putty and stop ovmm service manually.  When Oracle VM Manager service is stopped, (SERVICE OVMM STOP) the server does not shutdown automatically.  However as soon as I restart the OVMM service, it shuts down the server with message...
Shutdown requested by OVM. The system is going down for system halt NOW!
How do I find out what is causing OVM to issue the shutdown command and edit and fix via command line?

Since your server was continually rebooting, do you remember if you issued a shutdown or reboot from OVM web interface?  Mine was just shutting down.  Have you tried to use the Oracle Virtual Manage Web Interface to either reboot or shutdown the server after your upgrade to 3.2.4?  FYI I do not have support.  This is my sandbox.

I compiled my own kernel and it seems that setting processor_type_and_featured->processor_family:core_2 was necessary instead of default Arch's processor_type_and_featured->processor_family'pentium-pro.

remaining 16 users out of the 100 hit a 120 second delay before there request returns processing the test and completes. During this 120 sec delay I see the aps CPU go idles until the 120 sec time expires.
What is causing this 120 sec delay?

    Hello Vaibhav,
sorry I have no answer to your question. I want to know what tool you are using to do the stress test. We go live in one week with our EP for CRM and I really want to know if the performance is enough for 120 Users.
    Regards
    Gregor

  • Cpu goes to 100%

I can open itunes. I can not click on anything on the page without my cpu going to 100% and freezing my computer. If I type in an artist in the search I can sometimes look and purchase music. If I go to another artist my cpu goes to 100% and freezes. The only way to unfreeze it is to go to Windows Task Manager and end task on itunes.
