My system drives locked up -- "custom" access can't be reset

My system crashed and it took be a day and a half to get it working again: Lion wouldn't reinstall from the DVD, from the internet or from the Lion USB stick I made.  Finally I pulled out all the drives and put in only a Lion drive I had set aside as a safety. This worked.
My main system drive and the Time Machine drive display a little lock icon and when I open Info, their permissions are all listed as "custom."  Worse, when I try to change them, I can't.
All my data is on those drives and Lion won't even let me open them to transfer files.
How do I change the permissions?

I've been wrestling for three days with being locked out of all drives except one. I've tried everything on the planet including variations on the following, with no success. I was stunned when these two simple commands, cut and pasted into terminal, worked. I repeat this from the archives since it took me ages to find it among all the other posts that were efforts to help. Frame this, bronze it, put it on the wall, worship at its feet. I'm not sure I'll ever be able to relax using my Macs again. V.K., you're a god. How about visit a bolt on Cupertino.

run the following terminal commands (copy and paste, please)
sudo chflags 0 /volumes/*
sudo chmod a+rx /volumes/*
you'll have to enter your admin password (which you won't see). that's normal. this should unlock your drives.

  • Locked project - custom access??

hello all..my daughter just completed an entire idvd project on our laptop. when she went to burn, the laptop did not have enough memory to multiplex. she then went and put the project on a flash drive and went to the mac pro to burn. when she went to open the project in idvd, idvd says this project is locked and can not access it. i opened the info box on the project (on laptop) and the project is not locked but has custom access with no way to change it. what is going on??? any help would be appreciated.....

How did she 'put the project on a flash drive'?
An iDVD project is not self-contained. iDVD can be thought of as a container that holds references/aliases to the media used within it, but it does not actually move the media to its files. When you burn the iDVD project to a DVD disk, or create a disk image file, iDVD locates the media needed on your drive and pulls its information in just for the burn process.
If you move just the iDVD project onto another drive, iDVD will be unable to locate the files and will not work properly. In fact, iDVD will not work on your laptop if you move, rename, delete or change any of the media files used to create the project.
The only way to move an iDVD project is to burn an archive DVD disk of the project. This data DVD can be opened on another Mac and the media will be there also so that iDVD can locate it for burning a disk. However, if the original iDVD project is still on the laptop and you can somehow get more space on your laptop, you can save the project as a disk image file, and move it for burning.
Do a 'Save as Disk Image' from the iDVD project to create a disk image file. The process will look the same as the burn process, with encoding, and will take just as long. But, the end result will be a disk image file, not a burned DVD disk. The disk image file IS self-contained, and is usually smaller than the original iDVD project. The disk image file CAN be moved to another computer/drive, because it has all the needed media files encoded within it.
You can use Disk Utility or Toast to burn a DVD disk from the disk image.

You can achive with GP's, However this also can be also achived from editing the Registry key's...
What you can do is Just export the Registry by doing this
    http://tipsandhakcs.blogspot.com/2008/04/how-to-hide-computer-drives-in-windows.html artical.
and then you can create a batch file to add this registry key on target systems. You can follow this artical for how to use
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310516
    a sample batch exaple
    regedit.exe /s <var>path of .reg file</var>

Unfortunately that key is blocked if attached to a domain.  Group POlicy takes ownership and set the user account to read only.
IN a workgroup tis will wok as long as teh machine has never been joined to a domain.  When unjoining the policy key does not get reset.

My Mac Book Pro had a split drive with Windows Microsoft Access on it and it was removed when Mavericks installed.  I need this so how can I go back to the old system?

Restore from the backup you had prior to installing Mavericks.
However, the upgrade should not have altered your partition scheme. Did your erase and format the drive prior to upgrading?

  • Hi. My iMac hard drive is running Mavericks.  I have an old version of Quark Xpress (3.32) which won't run in Mavericks.  Can I partition my hard drive and run an older system on one partition, so I can access my Quark?  Is that possible?

Hi. My iMac hard drive is running Mavericks.  I have an old version of Quark Xpress (3.32) which won't run in Mavericks.  Can I partition my hard drive and run an older system on one partition, so I can access my Quark?  Is that possible?

    Hi ancelau,
QuarkXPress 3 is a Classic Mac OS application, so you need a version of OS X that still supports Classic. I believe 10.4 was the last one.
So if you have an iMac that boots with 10.4, then yes that is possible. I doubt though that newer Macs boot with OS X 10.4.
So why don't you upgrade QuarkXPress 3 to a newer version? I am not just asking that because I want you to spend money with us.
Typically using software that was released almost 20 years ago is just feasible when you keep an environment that was current at the time of release or a few years after, so an older Mac with a operating system present at that time. 20 years in IT is a lot.
So my opinion is that on a new Mac with a brand new operating system you need to use something a bit more current.
How about QuarkXPress 9 (released 3 years ago) or QuarkXPress 10? You are better off with v9, as QuarkXPress 10 only opens v7 and higher (whereas QuarkXPress 9 opens v3.1 and higher).
Or - I am even happy to make an exception - upgrade to 9 and we give you 10 for free? Let me know please.
    Thanks

  • "Custom Access" permissions are locking me out of my own computer!

"Custom Access" permissions are locking me out of my own computer!
I have a Mac Book Pro which I can no longer access, due, I believe, to a problem with disk and file permissions. When I attempt to open up the volume, which I am able to put in FireWire target mode and mount on the desktop of a nearby iMac G5, I get an error message saying: "The folder 'MacBook Pro' could not be opened because you do not have sufficient access privileges."
When I select the 'MacBook Pro' volume and run the Get Info command, I learn that the system, admin, and everyone else groups now have "custom access." I suppose that this newly acquired "custom access" is the reason that the volume icon now appears on the desktop with a lock at its lower left corner! Unfortunately, that lock is keeping me out, so I need help in finding the key back in!
How all this came about overnight is a mystery wrapped in a enigma similar to my getting pneumonia last summer. Coming down with both diseases would require telling long stories that would only have as their common objective the desire to be cured. I might have gotten the pneumonia at my college reunion; my laptop computer might have caught a cold last night when I ran TechTool Pro and optimized my volume prior to installing its eDrive today. Or, my laptop computer may have choked when I tried to add Disk Warrior to the TechTool Pro eDrive and inadvertently issued some command that resulted in my normal permission settings getting changed and rendering everything on the computer completely inaccessible to me. Who knows for sure? Right now, the cause doesn't matter: finding the solution does.
I used TechTool Pro to run a series of tests before (and after) I got locked out of my own computer and the volume passed all the tests for volume integrity and file integrity. TechTool also rebuilt the directory, defragged all the files, and optimized the hard drive into one, large, well-organized segment of files --that I unfortunately can no longer access!
*What I think I need now are some very explicit, error-free, Terminal (UNIX) instructions telling me how to change the permissions on an external FireWire volume called "MacBook Pro" containing Leopard Mac OS X 10.5.7 from its current custom access privileges back to my settings before my poor computer caught this disabling cold.*
I do have a SuperDuper clone of this MacBook Pro computer on an external FireWire, which I could probably use to relieve me of my pain. But, if at all possible, I would like to call upon that option only as a last resort for two reasons:
    (1) I am not entirely comfortable that the clone is completely reliable at this moment. My last cloning operation last night (before this corrupted permissions problem occurred) did not complete itself, leaving the cloned volume in an unknown, or unstable, state. (2) I would like to use this problem as an opportunity to grow and learn more about the Terminal and UNIX commands.
I have read the relevant sections in David Pogue's missing manual on Mac OS X Leopard, so I am familiar (in theory) with the concepts he explained regarding ownership, file permissions, the root, Terminal, the CHMOD command, and the SUDO command. It's just that, considering the awesome power of the SuperUser Do command, I'm not all that confident yet that I could write the command(s) that could affect the state of my entire computer hard drive. So, *I'm asking for guidance from a UNIX guru to guide my hand this first time out.*
I know about the idea of safe booting up as a single user, but since I do have my laptop computer mounted on the desktop of my iMac as a Firewire volume, I would prefer to use Terminal on the iMac to fix the permissions on that mounted volume, called "MacBook Pro".
*Experts only, please*. Theories about what might have caused this problem would be nice, but what I really need is explicit command line code to cure this one. Since other people may occasionally encounter this problem of being locked out of their own computer, it would be fine with me if some knowledgeable guru wants to use this as a springboard to write a detailed tutorial on the topic along the way to the solution. Thanks.

    {I read that article you sent me to, Baltwo, but it does not seem appropriate, because the disk is not invisible. It's locked! I also went through all the discussions on flag changing you directed to me to look up, and I tried to apply something from there to my situation. But that's not working for me yet either. The topics there seem to be close enough to be relevant to my case, but none are exactly on the mark, and so far they deliver no cigar. Maybe I missed the one thread you had in mind from among the twenty I looked through: I can't be sure. You point it out, if you have one in mind. Anyway, in the absence of anyone providing me with specific Unix code or suggestions about my particular situation, I plunged ahead on my own, and I attempted to write some Unix code that might fix my problem. So far, I've had no success. This posting intersperses my comments along with the lines of Unix code which were displayed on my MacBook Pro during my recent attempts to tinker under the hood. My remarks are contained inside of curly brackets like { and } while the results of my Unix experimenting in Single User Mode on the laptop are presented without curly brackets. These were initially notes to myself, so I'm creating a post around my Unix dabbling to see if it triggers any feedback, corrections, and guidance for moving ahead. I'm stuck right now.}

    {...and then several lines of replies fill up the screen, ending in that same loop regarding no such file or directory found, in regards to mDNSResponder. I had tried the {chmod 775 > solution recommended by a user at a web site I Googled to deal with the mDNSResponder problem he had. The chmod 775 / command worked for him, he reported, but it does not succeed for me. The mDNSResponderline continues to repeat itself ad infinitum, so I must force the Mac to turn off by holding down the power button for several seconds. Upon restart in Single User mode, I observe that, as before, "Root device is mounted read-only," so this time I try to amend permissions at the root level with...}

{If I understand what I've just learned about Unix, this tells the Mac to give me permission to do anything, but to give all others permission only to read and execute. sudo: can't open /private/etc/sudoers: Permission denied
    :/ root# sendmail: warning: valid_hostname: empty hostname
sendmail: fatal: unable to use my own hostname
{So, to summarize, I have a MacBook Pro which I am apparently locked out of and cannot change. The hard disk is not invisible: it will appear as an external drive when placed in Target Mode and connected via a Firewire cable to an iMac. I tried to use Terminal on that iMac to change permissions on the MacBook Pro, but permission was denied.
{So, I have tried to make changes on the MacBook Pro directly. I learned that it will neither start-up under normal circumstances nor via Safe Boot mode. It will, however, start-up under Single User mode. Based on my bleary-eyed crash course in Unix throughout all of last night and early this morning, I did gain some additional understanding about UNIX from some [free online books|http://www.scribd.com/doc/12747795/Made-Easy-Unix-for-Beginners] and articles, especially from a thorough and lucidly written article at Indiana University called [In Unix, how do I change the permissions for a file?|http://kb.iu.edu/data/data/abdb.html]
{Also, I followed the links to the Apple discussions on user flags, and I cherry picked the most appropriate solutions suggested there to see if they will apply to my situation. However, none quite fit. None have thus far succeeded. I think I now know how to formulate the syntax of Unix commands in regards to modifying permissions, and I'm willing to plow ahead and try things out. But I'm only a rank beginner in this Unix realm, so maybe I'm doing something wrong in that department.
    {It just boggles my mind that someone can inadvertently be locked out of their computer without a way back in, so all I'm asking for is some trouble-shooting guidance to find the key back in. Anyone got it? Is this a problem that can be cured by writing some Unix commands to the system? Or, does the solution lie elsewhere?}

  • I transferred files from a NAS server to the Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server and now some of the files have Custom Access and can't  be opened by some users.  How do I fix this?

We're setting up our Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server, and in the process transferred files that had been stored and accessed from our Blackarmor NAS server over to the Mac.  These files were all created on PC's and are Office Excel files, WordPerfect files or PDF's.  When you look at the files on the Mac from the Mac and bring up Get Info for the affected file, it says that the file has Custom Access.  The files that work properly don't have that configuration.  I can access and open the files on some computers, but some users can't open the files from their computer even though they can see it.  We're all using PC's and they get the Error:  Access Denied-Contact your administrator--or something similar.  I've seen on the web similar issues and it may have something to do with ACL permissions.  I don't know enough about Mac OS to understand this, but what is baffling is that they can be opened from some PC's but not others, and all of the Users have the same accessibility to the files.  Thanks for a solution!!

Oh, on the losing Internet, try this...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
PS. Your English is quite good & completely understandable.

This can be done easily with ethernet.
    Please follow the instructions strictly.
To make it easier I want you to do this overnight so you can turn off all your current connection to the internet.
Just go to the airport fan in to the top right and turn airport off.
Get ethernet cable and connect the laptop to the TC lan port.. ie <-> ones.
Press and hold the reset on the TC for about 10sec. until the front led flashes rapidly.
Open the airport utility.. go to manual setup and change the wireless to off. (so other people around you cannot join your network of one).
Ignore all the errors.. they won't stop the backup working.
Go to the TM and reselect the backup target disk as the TC.
It should start after 2min and run through to completion.
That is it.. for a backup of many GB it might take a few hours.. so make sure the laptop has power plugged in and the sleep is off.. (on early ones I think this is needed but I am a late arrival to the scene).. sleep doesn't affect later OS.

  • Can not assign custom access level with a user login

    Hi,
I am using Business objects XiR3. When I am loging in with a user having full control access and then I select a folder added a principal from user sercurity and when I am trying to add custom access level it gave me error
An error occurred at the server during security batch commit: Request 0 of type 38 failed with server error : You do not have sufficient rights to make the requested security changes.
it allow me to give access to standard access levels. also when I tried to assign custom access level with administrator user, it assigns custom access level to a principal without error.
Can any body tell me what I am doing wrong?
    Thanks in advance,
    Rajendra

    Hi Rajendra,
You have to make sure that the user group has the right 'Use access level for security assignment' assigned as granted on the access level you created. You can find this right under System / Access Level. That should do the trick!
    Hope this helps...

  • Suddenly unable to apply custom icon to system drive?

I've loved using custom drive icons for years, and have routinely changed them to suit my moods. Today, no matter what I try, I cannot change it, and in fact the attempts to apply a new icon have removed my old one, and I now have the standard system icon. I've tried both as the user and as Administator. I've repaired perms.
    What's going on?

Hi Mike, while I didn't think of it at the time I wrote the above, I now wonder if the Custom icon attribute bit got reset to No, and by using GetInfo and paste changed it back to yes. If you have Developer Tools installed you can test this theory with the GetFileInfo command:
    -bash:~francine$ GetFileInfo /Volumes/OXey/
    directory: "/Volumes/OXey/"
    attributes: avbstClinmed
    created: 08/05/2006 20:08:50
    modified: 03/08/2007 00:11:16
As I recall, the volume OXey was the one that was having trouble, although now the attribute is set correctly (the upper case C means the item has a custom icon). Recently there have been a rash of cases of drives having the visibility attribute spontaneously changed from v to V, so I guess the custom bit could spontaneously change also. Again, if you have Developer tools installed you can try resetting the bit:
    SetFile -a C /Volumes/OXey/
I just went the other way with my drive OXey, turned the bit off, relaunched the Finder and sure enough the custom icon disappeared, even though the .VolumeIcon.icns file was still there. When I turned the bit back on with the above command and relaunched Finder its custom icon reappeared.
If you don't have Developer Tools installed you can download them here:
    http://homepage.mac.com/francines/.Public/setgetfile.zip
Unzip and either put the two commands where you want them in you PATH, or just drag each command in turn into the Terminal to use it.

  • During ram preview ae cc wildly accessing system drive

After effects cc builds a ram preview of a 1920x1080 file without problem, the cache is on a secondary HD drive or SSD with plenty of speed and free space and there are 16 GB of RAM - but when the ram preview starts to play, sooner than 15 seconds it will become stilted and the system drive will start crackling like crazy. The activity of the system drive is so intense that the mac becomes sluggish and irresponsive.
An interesting aspect is that if it will keep playing as stilted as it is, after 2-3 cycles of the same ram preview range, the playback will become more fluid.
This happens - unbelievable- on a mac pro with 16 GB of RAM and latest Lion OS. All the files are on different drives than the system, and the cache was  hard drives or  ssd - all high speed, all internal drives.
And the latest surprise - assuming that maybe the system drive got too fragmented, I changed it for a brand new hd with all the programs transfered on the new drive from a time machine backup.
Same insane activity of the system drive at the less than 15 sec mark of ram preview playback.
Anyone encountered this wild accessing of the system drive by after effects cc during ram preview?

Good Points - you are partly right and my settings are attached here at the end.
I fiddled with them for a while (and even now they are too much in favor of AE) because it looked like they were not changing much from that weird behavior.  The fact is that I tried most values - from max to minimum for background processes -nothing changed much except the speed of the rendering. The stumbling and the wild accessing of the main drive continued no matter what after the 14 seconds mark of all HD renderings.
Seeing than no one can help here either, yesterday I tried changing everything else in the Preferences to see what makes any difference in AE CC 12.1 and get over with this behavior.
And 2 unexpected settings really made a difference for me:
1-the QuickTime Video Preview, unchecked, ended the inescapable stumbling at the 14 s mark. I don't know how, but it made a crucial difference.
2- at the Memory page I checked the Reduce Cache size when system is low on memory. It prevented the RAM preview from using all the ram and leave the mac processes starving and turning the machine sluggish.
The Ram preview now happens in an interesting fashion (I have Memory Cleaner, a benign app, really useful to show how much RAm you really have at a given moment on a Mac). The green line above the timeline now expands until RAM decreases to low numbers like ~500MB RAM left. The Preview processing then waits a matter of seconds until the numbers increase again beyond 1.5 GB and then continues to extend the line - and so on until it reaches the end of the work area. There is no crackling anymore (accessing system HD).
I am using only SSDs and auxiliary HD drives (for output and source files) and all Ram previews now are completely quiet.
So, I have found my solution so far. But there still is a question the AE designers might want to think:
If they know that AE will unload the RAM onto the system HD, why don't they insert an option in the Prefs to allow this unloading to happen onto any secondary drive - choosen by the user.
A secondary drive unload at least will not interfere with the system processes - turning the mac sluggish and add insult to injury.
My numbers below could look tight now, but the previews are really fast and I quit all secondary processes  on my mac when AE is working.

  • Requirement is to run CMD.EXE under the Local System Account. So that we can map a network drive to be used by a windows service, which will be created by command: - net use z: \\servername\sharedfolder /persistent:yes

    Environment:
    OS:  Windows 7 32/64 bit, Windows 2008 Server 64
    bit/ Windows 2012 Server 64 bit
    Priority:
    - Critical
    Requirement: - Since
the Windows Service is running under the Local System Account, we would like to emulate this same behaviour.
Basically, we would like to run CMD.EXE under the Local System Account. So that we can map a network drive to be used by a service using following
    command
    net use z: \\servername\sharedfolder /persistent:yes.
    Already Attempt:
We tried to launch the CMD.exe using the DOS Task Scheduler AT command.  Here’s a sample command:
    AT 10:36 /interactive cmd.exe
But I received a warning that “due
to security enhancements, this task will run at the time excepted but not interactively.”
It turns out that this approach will work for XP, 2000 and Server 2003 but due to session isolation
Interactive services no longer work on Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and above.
      2.  We
tried to create a secondary Windows Service via the Service Control (sc.exe) which merely launches CMD.exe.
    <Drive>:\sc create RunCMDAsLSA binpath= "cmd" type=own type=interact <Drive>:\sc
    start RunCMDAsLSA
In this case the service fails to start and results it the following error message:
FAILED 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.
      3. One
suggestion, we found to launch CMD.exe via a Scheduled Task, but
it is not giving any option to launch CMD.exe in interactive mode; so that I can map network drive using net command.
      4. I read an article, which
demonstrates the use of PSTools from SysInternals. I launched the command line and executed following command
    psexec -i -s cmd.exe
PSTools worked fine, but It seems that in scope of Sysinternals Software License
Terms. You may not "use the software for commercial software hosting services."
Application will deploy on client, which will be like commercial,
so we are not able to use PSTools.
Kindly assist us for achieving the requirement. We have tried all the ways, but nothing is working for us. Kindly suggest.
    I will be really thankful.

    Hi Sir,
Nothing worked from above for us. You can see our remarks on posted query.
That’s why, we posted on forum.
And there will not be any vulnerability, because, if we will use "net
    use ..."
    in network domain; definitely,
we will provide username and password of mapped drive system.
And, that system, itself is given by client; so that, there must not be any vulnerability; they are ready to provide user name and password.
We need a way; by which we can complete the requirement. Kindly assist.
