RE: Mail
I inherited an iMac, OS X 10.6.8. The Mail system is corrupted. I cannot close blank mail formats that opened to be written and sent. I just get an unpleasant noise when I try to close these. Also, I don't know what the outgoing mail link should be.
Please help!

ITunes.exe - System error / corrupt file
I purchased an iPod nano about a month ago. Since then about every week my entire iPod content is erased while i transfer music to iTunes. All of a sudden it disconnects and says "iTunes.exe - System error / Corrupt file". Each time this happens I need to restore my iPod, which does not help either. I have the latest iTunes version and I downloaded the iPod updater, however none of them make a difference in the situation. I would really like to know whether this can be solved or I need to return the device to the store.

Etc/system file corrupted how to recover it?
etc/system file corrupted how to recover it?
with boot -a you can only specify new /etc/system during boot , e.g. /dev/null
but if you want to recover it , you can do it from live kernel ( if you didn't reboot after /etc/system was corrupted )
with
echo ::system|mdb -k
or from previous crash dump simmilar way
cd /var/crash/`uname -n`
cho ::system|mdb unix.[x] vmcore.[y] -
Systeme Preference Corruption for All Users!
In one of my user account, I can't get the scroll bars to show!!!
I want in preference-general and select ''Always'' under Show Scroll Bars, but I can't see them in Safari, Mail...
When I close Preference, my ''Always'' selection is gone and it return to '' Automatically based on input device''
Also, issue with Screen Saver. I can select any Apple default screen saver. My iMac always play my iPhoto Library.
I'm suspecting Systeme Preference Corruption in all my users.
In previous post, Frank recommended to boot from recovery disk, go to terminal, rset paasword window and slect ''Reset Home Folder Permissions and ACLs''
This is what I did, exept, it was running after 24 hrs of waiting and I decide to quit. It did the same with all users...
Do you have a solution to this issue?
NOTE: Lions was reinstalled and HD erase. Repair Disk Permission done, Safe boot done.
What do I got left?Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy – do not type – the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Next, boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select ▹ Restart from the menu bar. -
System.plist corrupted! What to do?
My system.plst corrupted! What should I do? Now all the applications won't work. I misplaced my Leopard disk. Now I start this discussion from other computer. Please help.
No installer disc and you don't back up the computer files? That's living dangerously.
What system is the other computer running?
If you could find the contents you could probably just make a copy with TextEdit since it is just a text file. Don't look at me, I run Tiger. -

T400: System Update = Corrupt windows system files
I have tried to make a fresh Windows 7 installation, but after installing updates via Lenovo System Update the system gets corrupt.
I replaced the hard drive on an T400 and loaded a image that I had on to the drive.
After a installing a few updates and program I noticed strange system beaver. So I did a system file check and it came back that files was corrupt and cold not be repaired.
So I did a new fresh Windows install. But it to became corrupt after just running Windows Update and Lenovo System Update.
So I ran some hard drive and memory diagnostic without find and problems.
Then I did a new Windows 7 install again. After I installed all recommended updates from Windows Update I did a system file check, all OK. The I installed Lenovo System Update and all its recommended updates and did a new system file check, Windows system files corrupt.
Any one exercising similar problem or have any Ideas what Lenovo update is destroying the system?

Are you sure you have a sound/healthy installation media?
I have Win7 Ultimate in three T400, a T400s, (plus three T500, two W500 and two X200s, just to name the Thinkpads of the same generation). Never had a problem with Lenovo System Update.
But in my case I first install PowerManagement only, then run Windows Update until Windows is fully updated and as a final step I run Lenovo System update. Worked as a charm so far...

good morning all
What if in system datafile some blocks are corrupted in scenerio as below(db in noarchive mode but backup available-point in time recovery not important, data loss tolerated but want faster approach without shutting down db prefrably)
oracle 10g release 2
1)have cold backup /rman of few days old before corruption
2)can i use bmr of rman or export system from this server import on anoter server and export and import back on this server
3)or can i restore backup/rman of this db on other server, export system and import this on server where
system.dbf is corrupted
4)OR should i restore whole rman backup and replace whole db(point in time recovery not important here)
which approach is best
thanksfor the following points :
1)have cold backup /rman of few days old before corruptionyou have to remove the existing C/R/D files and restore those files from the last backup and start the database.
2)can i use bmr of rman or export system from this server import on anoter server and export and import back on this serverTaking export is possible but not sure whether there would be any problem while taking any export and also during the import as well.
3)or can i restore backup/rman of this db on other server, export system and import this on server where system.dbf is corrupted Its same as your second point but you are just doing it remotely
4)OR should i restore whole rman backup and replace whole db(point in time recovery not important here) which approach is bestThis point is right because the database is not in archivelog mode...
Cheers! -
SYSTEM TS Corruption - Zero Blocks
One of our production instances use operating system level COPY as backup method. When we tried to implement rman backups, we came to know there are some zero blocks in system tablespace. after doing a DBV on the datafile noted by rman, we found there are 12 corrupt/zero pages in system03.dbf.
We cannot go to a backup and roll forward, because we dont know since when this system03 is corrupt. The only option that comes to mind is a full export and rebuild of the database. This is an oracle applications db and pretty critical. The size is around 300GB. We cant afford that much downtime on production.
Any ideas ? so far we didnt have any reported issues due to this corruption. The corrupted object in SYS.IDL_UB1$.

Edited by: Lakshmi Pavuluri on Dec 11, 2008 11:30 AMI think Oracle support is playing it safe. With damaged system tablespace without backup, that's logical conclusion.
Did you try run hcheck.sql to get a report?
"hcheck.sql" script to check for known problems in Oracle8i,Oracle9i, Oracle10g and Oracle 11g

Do some DML on table SYS.IDL_UB1$ see you get any error.

ORA-00704: bootstrap process failure and SYSTEM datafile corrupt
We have an Oracle 10g Express database that is getting the following error on startup.
ORA-00704: bootstrap process failure
It is also showing that the SYSTEM datafile is corrupt. And unfortunately the backups are gone. Is there any way to recover from this without a backup? Maybe some hidden undocumented parameter???
We do have some full database exports from a couple weeks ago so it is not a complete loss but would really like a full recover.Windows XP
We have tried allowresetlogs_corruption and allowread_only_corruption and no luck so far.

SYSTEM Tablespace corrupt blocks !!!!!!!!!
Hi,
Oracle version 10gR2 - 10.2.0.1.0
The database which i am running in 10g is having few corrupt data blocks in system data files. I have no backup of full database and neither the database is in archive log mode. I know the situation of my development database has very less chance of getting to open mode.
I have checked in metalink in for any hidden parameters, But my funny questions do u think there is any hidden parameter to get out of this issue. please suggest any metalink doc or any parameter to overcome this issue :-)
Thanks
Edited by: user11981262 on Dec 15, 2011 8:41 AMI don't know any helping secret parameter for you. As I see this your data is lost.

System file corruption-alternatives to erase&install?
To make a long story short(er) I restored from (SuperDuper) backup after the HD failed and Apple gave me a new one. Then problems occurred with the system being slow (hesitating a lot) and having trouble connecting via wireless and finally not connecting at all, and then the machine ended up in "limbo" (according to the Mac Genius.) Now I've been told to erase and install, but I'm reluctant... There's a years worth of tweaks, updates, and installs on my MacBook! (After all, that's why I was so fervent about backing up...) And Boot Camp too.*)
Evidently "some" corrupt system files made their way into my backup before the old drive failed. (There was no warning; one day it was just gone.)
My question is, is there a way to figure out/diagnose which system files are corrupt and to replace only those? Or, alternatively, is there a way to "erase and install" only the system? Please forgive my "lack of Mac," I come from many years with Windows.
*)I'm assuming I can use Winclone to restore Windows (if I really have to erase the drive) once I repartition using Boot Camp. Um, all I have to do is remember how big I made that partition...I suggest that you start with an Archive and Install (checking the box to preserve settings). The last time I did this was in an upgrade from 10.2 to 10.3 on our little iMac G3, and after it finished, everything was just exactly the same as it had been under 10.2, except for one thing: those little pictures were gone by the users' names on the login screen (it was trivial to reconnect those pictures with the names). So I would try that, and see if your issues are fixed. If they are not, then there is another step you can take, which is to delete your preference files that are associated with the problem (i.e. wireless, airport). and if these things are not effective, then I would proceed with the full erase and install. I haven't done the Archive and Install with Tiger but I don't think it gives you a lot of options about what setting to save ... I think it's either all or none.
By the way, before doing any of these things, you should make at least one complete backup or clone of your entire disk.
Also, before doing Archive & Install or Erase & Install, create a new user and login as that user to see if the problem goes away. If it does, then there is not much point in doing a new system installation because the problem would have been pinpointed to your local user files/preferences, not the system-wide software.
I am not surprised that the Apple Genius suggested Erase/Install versus Archive/Install. The Erase/Install is guaranteed to fix any software issue, so the Genius won't need to deal with you in a follow up anymore. They have people lined up and want to just get you on your way, even though it might cause you a lot of work to recover all your settings and installed software (that's your time, not his). The Archive/Install is also highly likely to fix almost all software problems, but if it's something corrupted in your user settings, then it might not, in which case you'll be back and he'll have to deal with you. So he's suggesting killing a fly on a window with a sledgehammer, when maybe a flyswatter would work just as well (and cause less collateral damage to your house). I understand the motivations of a busy Apple Genius, but from your point of view, it would be better to try the other things before finally going to the erase and install.
Remember to do that backup before trying any of these things.
In general Macs do not need to have system software reinstalled. In fact I have never had to do it as a repair/diagnostic step on any of my machines using Mac OS X (except that one Archive and Install I did, but that was on a healthy system to go from 10.2 to 10.3). -
Not sure what happened, but the OS X system colorpicker seems to have become corrupted. I can't get select red. Whenever I try to choose red from the color picker, the color selected is orange.
Please see this screenshot to see what I'm talking about - http://www.hallnet.com/temp/RedProblem.jpeg.
The screenshot shows the ColorJack web site in Safari with a color wheel with red (R:255, G:0. B:0) selected, Textedit with the system color picker and red selected, but orange in the color picker box, and the DigitalColor Meter showing that the color in the system color picker box is actually orange and not a result of aberrant monitor behavior.
I've tried logging in as a different user, but I still get the same problem.
I've tested a few applications to se if the effect on color is universal. Most display the problem as soon as I try to pick a color, but PhotoShop CS3 does display true red.
This problem started happening after using an application called Art Text.
I'm running Leopard 10.5.1 on an Intel Mac mini.
Any ideas?Hi Honolulu,
I'm not sure I fully understand your post. Are you saying that you also cannot get red (255:0:0) on your Leopard and Tiger machines? And that that is OK?
FYI, I just tried this test on my MBP: Open TextEdit; Type in some text and then select it; apple-T to bring up the Font window; select Maraschino from the color picker Crayola crayons tab; open DigitalColor Meter and mouse over the text in TextEdit to see what the color really is. On my MBP, Maraschino is R:252, G:12, B:13. It's not pure red but it looks a lot redder than on my Mac mini, where the same test gives R:222, G:42, B:0 which is orange.
Also, surely it doesn't matter what you do with color correction. That is only affecting how the color is presented on the monitor. The base color red should still be 255:0:0 in DigitalColor Meter, even if it looks orange on the monitor. -
/etc/system got corrupted
Dear All,
if on a running server /etc/system file got corrupted, then what will happen...means the server will continue running or it will come down to OK prompt.....Check if your OS volumes are mirrored ( # df -k ) if root ( / ) is /dev/md/dsk/d0 then you will need to add the metaroot entry back.
Mine looks like this, you can re-create it by re-running mataroot
