I have Lion installed on my mac. My desktop and screensaver, in system preferences will not load. I have to Force close it, after it's been open. I know that I
can change my desktop pic, by clicking "change my desktop, but I would like to understand what made it freeze up like that. All I get is that thing that looks like a piece of candy. From there, it does nothing. The rest of the system preferences work fine. It's like its caught in a loop of some kind. I would appreciate any help that I can get. Thanks.Since you are still under the Apple warranty, please give Apple tech support a call (before your 90 day phone support expires, if you did not buy the APP yet...) If the problem is more than just a simple software glitch, they will be able to fix it right away for you...

System preferences will not load
Hello, I am new to all of this and my expert is traveling. I read through this forum and saw some others had problems with system preferences. My problem is that I can not get system preferences to load when I click on it. I have tried the icon in the dock, the item in the blue Apple menu and even in the applications folder. When I click on any of these, nothing happens. This problem just started. I have not loaded any new software or updates in quite some time. Any ideas about how I can solve this problem? I am using a Powerbook G4 with Mac OS 10.4.9. Thank you!
"/Applications/System Preferences.app/Contents/MacOS/System Preferences: launch failed with error code -2857 (cfragCFragRsrcErr) for application /Applications/System Preferences.app/Contents/MacOS/System Preferences\n"
Wow, that's bizarre. "cfragCFragRsrcErr" means that the 'cfrg' resource could not be loaded, but that makes no sense whatsoever. Well, it makes sense in that System Preferences.app isn't a Code Fragment Manager application, but a native Mach-O executable. (Applications in OS 9 and prior used the "Code Fragment Manager" executable format, which involved a single file executable that had both a resource fork and a data fork. See this image for an example. In the resource fork would be the 'cfrg' resource which would define the various sections of executable code found in the data fork of the executable.)
Apple hasn't created any CFM applications in years; as you could see, I had to dig up Microsoft Word to find an example of that format. Instead, in OS X, most applications aren't single "flat" files, but are bundles or packages, which appear as a single file, but are a folder which contains the many individual files that make up the app.
It's a mystery to me why you'd be getting that kind of an error on an application that's not CFM. It would help if you ran the two commands I gave earlier and post the output you get. you can copy and paste one line at a time into the Terminal application and hit return.
<pre>
ls -la "/Applications/System Preferences.app/Contents/MacOS/System Preferences"
file "/Applications/System Preferences.app/Contents/MacOS/System Preferences"</pre>
The first command is attempting to get information about the executable file, the second command attempts to look at the internal contents of the file and see if it matches a known recognized type of file. I get the following:
MacBookPro:~ mdouma46$ ls -la "/Applications/System Preferences.app/Contents/MacOS/System Preferences"
-rwxrwxr-x 1 root wheel 250884 Apr 25 04:05 /Applications/System Preferences.app/Contents/MacOS/System Preferences
MacBookPro:~ mdouma46$ file "/Applications/System Preferences.app/Contents/MacOS/System Preferences"

/Applications/System Preferences.app/Contents/MacOS/System Preferences (for architecture i386): Mach-O executable i386

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

System Preferences will not open 10.10
After having some amusing issues with 10.10.1, one issue being that System Prefs wouldn't open, I decided to restore the system back to 10.10. Though I can't say yet that this has fixed all my problems, one glaring issue persists: System Preferences will not open. The icon in the dock will bounce for a good minute and "System Preferences" will show up in the upper menu bar, but the actual panel will never load up and the icon (upon right clicking on it) will eventually say "app not responding."
All in all:
I can access System Prefs in safe mode. I have attempted to remove systempreferences.plist. Nothing seems to show up in the console when attempting to boot System Prefs up (besides an excessively long hang report). I have repaired disk permissions. I have no idea when this started. iMac dual core Mac OS X (10.4.7)
iMac dual core Mac OS X (10.4.7)Tried that, did 'repair disk permissions and it said all was ok. But when I pressed the 'Verify permissions' button it came out with an error message. Said that there was an error upon exiting, said the hard drive was damaged. Do you think that is connected to 'system preferences' not opening. As I said the 'system now has a 'circle with a slash' symbolon top of it.

My system preferences will not open!
i have a Mac Mini and 10.6.8 and my system preferences will not open how do i solve this?
What happens when you try?
Try booting to Safe Mode
OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
After your try, open the Console app in the Utilities folder and at the time you tried look for log entry errors associated with the opening System Preferences and post them here. -

Odd bug: "keyboard and mouse" within "system preferences" will not open!!
After having to Archive and Re-Install yesterday and installing "X11", I have an odd problem:
- apple+i leads to crashing and restart of "Finder"
- when investigating this I found the "keyboard and mouse" registry in "system preferences" will not open.
Any ideas what could be wrong?
Is there any other remedy short of another Archive and Re-Install?
In the system library I have "Keyboard.prefPane" version 3.13. Clicking on it opens a blank "system preferences" page entitled "keyboard and mouse".
Your help would be greatly appreciated!
PowerBook G4 1.25 GHz Mac OS X (10.4.9)Reinstallation solved the problem.

TS4097 iCloud system preferences will not quit
The system preference will automatically open. Then it asks for my password for icloud. non of the buttons (support, sign out, and ok) do not respond.
Post a screen shot of the message that says it needs repairing.

System preferences will not open
I have the macbook pro 13. the previous owner did something that is preventing me to open the system prefrences in the upper left or the dock station. The system prefrences screen will pop up in the middle of my screen and then dissapear. Sometimes there is a blue bubble on under the dock system prefrences icon but like I said it pops up and then dissappears or shuts down on its own. the screen turns off as fast as it opens. I have googled, and reserached and tried a few things but none are working.. I can't get into any of the prefrences to change things like the date and time or get into passwords to change the last owners name and personal information to change it all over to my name, etc.. Crappier part is I am in Afghan and this laptop does not have a disk to it for me to ust re-format it or re-install. I currently have version 10.7.2.
Did he delete something, or lock up this section.. This is me being a first time apple owner,, so any help would be great.. I have even held the control key down, clicked the dock icon and tried to select a specific section and same problem occurs,, pos up then shuts off. If I select a specific folder while holding the control button,, it will go to that selection and I can see for a split second I am in the folder but then it shuts down again.Sorry to hear you're having trouble with your first Mac!
Have you tried restarting?
If so, and the problem persists, then do this:
Go to the Finder and open a new window. On the left side, click on "Applications" and go down to "Utilities" and open "Disk utility". Click on your harddrive and then "Repair Permissions" (give it a few minutes to complete), then restart. See if System Preferences will open. If not, then do the following:
In a Finder window, click on your User name on the left (under the section labeled "Places"). Then click on "Library" then "Preferences" and then find the file called "com.apple.systempreferences.plist" and delete it. Empty the trash and try again to launch System Preferences. Hope that works! Please post back whether it does or not so others can help if the problem is not solved. -
My system preferences will not open, what is wrong?
can some one please give me a hand... I can not open my system prefence from and of the 3 way it can be opened. Is there any place on line that I could possibly reinstall the OS so that it can be functional?
Thanks for your response, and sorry it did not make sence... I wanted to know why my system prefence will not open. I click on it and absoltuley nothing happens. I try to back door it by right clicking to try and change my back ground picture, but that gives me a sound you would hear when the CPU or program won't let you do somthing. Maybe someone else has had the same problem and was able to fix it. I hope that clears it up.

Mouse Preference will not load
Here's a weird one.
My Mouse slowed down so I opened System Preferences and clicked on 'Mouse' preferences and I get this message-
Preferences Error
Could not load Mouse
Switched Mouse in USB ports but still the same, Mouse still works but moves slow. Is there a Preferences pref file I can trash or a Mouse pref file? Any idea's?
Thanks (10.2.8 on Pismo)I came across this discussion page today which seems to offer some useful suggestions

System Preferences - Network Not Loading
Hi,
I've a OS X 10.6.2 for a week now, and my Network Preference Pane wouldn't load all of a sudden. The last time I changeed it was the other day where I removed some wireless networks.
When I load the network pref pane, it just says "Loading Network..."
I created another user to check if it's just my user account, but it has the same problem too. So I would think it's a system-wide setting that went wrong.
My console log has the following whenever I try to open the pref pane:
11/24/09 11:05:52 AM System Preferences[1586] * Assertion failure in -[NSMenuItem initWithTitle:action:keyEquivalent:], /SourceCache/AppKit/AppKit-1038.25/Menus.subproj/NSMenuItem.m:270
11/24/09 11:05:52 AM System Preferences[1586] Invalid parameter not satisfying: aString != nil
Must be a setting in the plist, I just don't know which one, and how do I get that plist back without a time machine backup.
Please help, I've been all around the web and the discussions and can't find a solution to this one.
Thanks.I have had exactly the same problem with the network not loading in system preferences. I am using a macbook pro running OSX 10.6.2. As an alternative to the suggestions made here I have tried running repair disk permissions several times and each time it brought up the same thing: Permissions differ on "usr/share/derby", should be drwxr-xr-x , they are lrwxr-xr-x ." It then apparently repairs the problem but it produces the same message each time: "Repaired usr/share/derby". I realise this might have nothing to do with the network problem.
In my case the problem seemed to happen when I logged on first thing thing this morning and Time Capsule was unable to connect to the internet. It requested a network password but then restarted before I put in the necessary password. The wireless network is operating I just can't bring up the network in preferences and I don't like the sound of the various solutions that have been tried because I'm not sure what data or settings I will lose. Any other suggestions would be most welcome.
